Ein Fest der Vielfalt, der Begegnung, der Demokratie. Demokratie war das beherrschende Thema: Zum einen, weil am Freitag das Urteil des Verfassungsgerichts bekannt wurde, nach dem die ganze AfD gesichert als rechtsextrem gelten kann und zum anderen weil Donald Trump natürlich die Podien beherrschte. In der Abschlusspredigt kam auch Vicepresdident J.D. Vance zur Sprache. Und Franziskus, Gott hab ihn selig. J.D.Vance wollte die Liebe Gottes zuerst für seine Familie in Anspruch nehmen und dann für die Nation. Wenn noch etwas übrig ist, vielleicht auch noch für den Rest der Welt. Ihm widersprach Papst Franziskus noch zu Lebzeiten – denn Gottes Liebe gilt ausnahmslos und unterschiedslos allen Menschen und der ganzen Schöpfung. So sagte es auch die Predigerin des Abschlussgottesdienstes, die Theologin Prof. Dr. Hanna Reichel. „Nicht Gott gehört uns, Mr. Vance, wir gehören Gott“. Nichts und niemand kann uns trennen von der Liebe Gottes. Uns alle. Bischöfin Mariann Budde, ja, genau die, die Trump im Gottesdienst bei seiner Ernennung zum Präsidenten ins Gewissen geredet hat, erntete auf dem Kirchentag großen Applaus. Sie hatte Trump zur Barmherzigkeit aufgerufen, zur Barmherzigkeit gegenüber denen, die Jetzt Angst haben, vor dem was kommt. Dazu gehört die Queere Community, die Migranten, die Arbeitslosen ohne Krankenversicherung. Trump hatte die sogenannte Bischöfin als linksradikale Trump-Hasserin verspottet, die Rede sei dumm und scheußlich gewesen. Nicht so Franziskus und der Kirchentag, Budde wurde für ihren Mut gefeiert – mit Standing Ovations. Bundestagspräsidentin Julia Klöckner ließ sich auch blicken und verteidigte ihre Aussage, die Kirchen sollten sich weniger um Tempolimits kümmern und bei ihrer Kernkompetenz Leben und Tod bleiben. Der Kirchentag widersprach: Wir mischen uns ein, Tag für Tag und wir werden die Demokratie verteidigen. So war es ein politischer – aber auch ein spiritueller Kirchentag. Mutig. Stark. Beherzt. It can be rare to receive – or maybe more importantly to give – meaningful recognition for the important work being done all around us. In our race to the next activity, next location, next appointment, we often hurry right past the individuals providing worthy service directly in front of us. Rarely do we pause and thank the janitor for the clean bathroom, the cashier for taking the order, the driver for safe transport, or the hotel clerk for working the night shift. By contrast, through a lot of grace, a ton of help from others and a bit of luck, I stumbled into a profession where I am frequently thanked with fancy dinners, standing ovations, and long lines with hugs and handshakes. This encouragement from others adds joy to my life and a reminder that my work matters. Let me explain.

After a rough stretch in Big 12 play, the Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball team is suddenly giving fans reason for hope. With back-to-back wins over UCF and BYU, the Bearcats have put up 80+ points in consecutive games and are playing with renewed energy and confidence. The 84-66 victory over BYU was particularly impressive, considering Cincinnati lost to the same team by 30 points just two weeks ago. This time around, the Bearcats dominated from start to finish, shooting a blistering 58% from the field and 50% from three-point range. Sophomore guard Jizzle James led the way with a breakout performance, scoring 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. James has struggled with his outside shot for much of the season, but appears to be finding his rhythm at the right time. Day Day Thomas continued his strong play with 15 points, while Josh Reed added 12 points and some highlight-reel plays including a thunderous two-handed dunk that brought the Fifth Third Arena crowd to its feet. Perhaps most encouraging was the Bearcats' improved ball movement and spacing on offense. They tallied 17 assists on 34 made baskets and looked much more fluid than in recent weeks. Coach Wes Miller's decision to play smaller lineups for longer stretches seems to be paying dividends. At 4-8 in Big 12 play, Cincinnati still faces an uphill battle to make the NCAA Tournament. But with winnable games remaining against Utah, West Virginia, TCU and others, there's a path to finishing strong if they can maintain this level of play. The Bearcats will need to string together several more wins to have a realistic shot at dancing in March. But after looking dead in the water just a week ago, they've injected new life into their season and given fans reason to believe again. Up next is a crucial road game at Utah. A win there would give Cincinnati its first three-game winning streak in Big 12 play and set up a potentially season-defining stretch. The Bearcats aren't back yet, but they're showing signs of the team many expected to see when the season began.

The Morning Footy crew discuss Alex Morgan's final professional soccer match that took place over the weekend. After suddenly announcing her retirement as well as delivering the news she was pregnant with her second child, she stated that his past Sunday's match would be her last. She played just 13min and did have an attempt at goal from the PK spot, which ultimately was saved by NC Courage goalkeeper and USWNT teammate Casey Murphy. However, that did not damper any good vibes as she took her shoes off in the center circle to a standing ovation and hugs from her teammates when just before she ultimately was subbed off. Incredible scenes to match an incredible career both on and off the field.
