Beacon artist depicts Earth under siege Zac Skinner walks the talk. Concerned about environmental degradation, he takes his young sons to remove trash along the banks of the Hudson River and donates a portion of his art sales to the nonprofit Earthjustice. No surprise then, that his symbolic paintings are saturated with stark reminders that the Earth is under siege. In two of them, oil pipelines guide the eye. In "Pop-up Farm with Vortex," a maelstrom threatens a ziggurat. "I'm going for post-industrial landscape," Skinner says. "They can be dark, but I intend them to be a hopeful dark." Skinner, 43, is one of three artists featured in a group show, Home is Where the Heart Is, on display at the Garrison Art Center through March 9. He will also participate in an artist talk with Amy Cheng, Erik Schoonebeck and Greg Slick at the art center at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 22). A practicing Buddhist whose work reflects his travels in Asia, Skinner enjoys camping and many of his pictures depict structures in the wilderness, like a pyramid, temple, monastery or wooden meditation hut. "For the smaller ones, I like to feature a prominent entryway to make them more inviting and inhabitable," he says. "They provide a sense of hope and a safe space as shelter from the storm." Hailing from the Syracuse area, Skinner earned an MFA from The School at the Art Institute of Chicago. Since moving to Beacon in 2014, he's used the area as a launch pad to show works in Texas, California and Korea. In addition to exhibiting in group shows at Kube Art Center and the former Theo Ganz Studio, he has mounted solo shows at the BAU Gallery and the now-closed Matteawan Gallery, all in Beacon, as well as the Garrison Art Center. A solo show at No. 3 Reading Room in Beacon led to a limited-edition book, Atlas Trap, published by Traffic Street Press. Owner Paulette Myers-Rich paired Skinner's relief prints of endangered species with poetry by Greg Delanty in a 40-copy print run. As a painter, Skinner works with many media, including tempera, egg-based paints used widely until the Renaissance. Some of the bleaker works are created with special charcoal, like "Cliff Shelter No. 1 with Storm Clouds," on view at Garrison Art Center. "Abandoned Hut by Dried Steam Bed" "Atmosphere Bubble and Ruins in a Dead Landscape" "Cliff Dwellers with Aloe Vera Garden" "Cliff Shelter No. 1 with Storm Clouds" "Pop-up Farm with Vortex" "Survival Camp with Water Collector, Kale and Oil Pipeline" His approach also hops around. "The alchemist in me likes to experiment with materials and depictions," he says. "I don't have a style, really, I just keep inventing my way through the images." Some pieces feature charred landscapes, barren trees and lots of stumps. Clouds are often ominous. The ones gathering in "Abandoned Hut by Dried Stream Edge" (on view in Garrison) and "Survival Camp with Water Collectors, Kale and Oil Pipeline," evoke Van Gogh's swirling brush style. The large dabs that make up the majestic purple mountains in "Atmosphere Bubble and Ruins in a Dead Landscape," which hangs in his studio at Kube, also channel the Dutch master. The painting's pillars could represent Stonehenge or the detritus of an abandoned highway overpass. "The goal with the overt message is to prevent indifference over time," he says. "I am compelled to represent myself, and my convictions, to inspire inner strength." The Garrison Art Center, at 23 Garrison's Landing, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Monday.

As Trump exploits hurricane victims for political gain, Jen breaks down how his lies have wreaked havoc on the communities and institutions that make America strong. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas joins Jen to discuss Trump's dangerous rhetoric falsehoods, which force the rest of country to pick up the pieces rather than join in a common cause. Next, Congressman Dan Goldman joins to address why Republican leaders like Speaker Mike Johnson still choose to reject reality and refuse to acknowledge that Trump lost the 2020 election. Jen also addresses Vice President Harris's recent media blitz, geared toward new media platforms over legacy outlets. Sarah Matthews, Jerusalem Demsas and Jonathan Martin discuss Harris's strategy, as well her appearance on 60 Minutes. Rather than focusing on the stupid Democrat convention, conservatives should be strategizing about what looks to be an impending election loss. They must figure out how to make a big play to change this election while also building an insurance policy in red states. I continue our discussion from last week on how new data is reinforcing what we've seen in recent elections, with Republicans getting slaughtered in critical suburbs. This will not only lead to a Harris victory but leave us in a vulnerable position in Congress and numerous state legislatures. Towards the end, I discuss the big GOP shift on abortion and how it exemplifies an old adage of mine: Republicans will vigorously fight only when the ball is not in play but then lie in a state of coma when the Super Bowl is actually being played. On this episode of Inside Business we look at the €725 million funding plan the Government has agreed to provide to RTÉ over the next three years. Laura Slattery of The Irish Times sat down with RTÉ chief Kevin Bakhurst last week and not surprisingly he was “really pleased” with the settlement. Laura joined host Ciarán Hancock in studio to explain how the settlement provides RTÉ with financial stability over the next three years. Also on the podcast this week, Revolut recently announced its intention to offer mortgages in the Irish market. But there has also been a growing number of complaints about the digital bank from customers who have had their accounts scammed and have run into a brick wall with Revolut in terms of getting the issue resolved. Brendan Burgess is a consumer advocate and runs the website Askaboutmoney.com, we began by asking him for his view on whether Revolut offering home loans would shake up an Irish mortgage market dominated by AIB and Bank of Ireland.Produced by John Casey with JJ Vernon on sound. This week on a Lively Experiment, rising opposition to a constitutional convention. He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.' And so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,' and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” Luke 12:54-56Do we recognize times and seasons? Are we prepared as events around us take place that have the potential to shake this world? And do we see the rapid nature in which things are changing...an acceleration that seems to only be growing by the day? In Christ we are called to preach the Gospel. It never changes no matter what this world brings. Additionally, we must seek the Lord to ask what He would want to do in and through us and that we would be ready, even in seasons of great change. From now until the end of 2024 and even beyond, I feel much is going to happen. Are we ready and are we willing to be used by the Lord "for such a time as this?"
In this lively episode, the hosts dive into a heated discussion about the impending weather and the impact it might have on their daily lives. Tune in for a mix of weather talk, sports analysis, and a dash of entertainment news.
Alan McKnight, chief investment officer at Regions Asset Management, sees storm clouds on the horizon for the market and the economy, but his outlook remains benign, suggesting that a well-diversified portfolio will withstand heightened volatility for the remainder over the year. He says we have experienced a muted, rolling downturn and doesn't see a full-blown recession happening. By comparison, Avi Gilburt, founder of the Elliott Wave Trader, entered the year calling for the market to reach record highs no later than the second quarter — which it has — but then to turn into the start of a full-blown bear market that will last years and bring the Standard & Poor's 500 down by well over 50 percent. Gilburt says that the market remains on track for that. In the middle of that kind of disagreement, it's hard for investors to know what to do, and Andy Reed, head of investor behavior research at Vanguard, discusses research into certain biases that are leading most investors to make mistakes that result in diminished gains and missed opportunities.

In episode one we heard about the unexpected windfall that the cycling industry saw at the start of the pandemic and how many needed to react. Of course that didn't last forever, and in this episode I've titled ‘the storm clouds' we talk about the early signs that this new demand was coming to an abrupt halt, and the types of behaviour that was happening and the causes of that behaviour that led to the catastrophe that the industry would later see.
Live from STUDIO G- in the heart of America- I'm STEVE GRUBER- saying the things you wish you could -every day- Fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom and defending this great nation— This is THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW! Here are 3 big things you need to know right now— Number One— Hunter Biden is once again trying to get special treatment for a felony gun possession charge—and is trying to get a plea deal that was thrown out previously re-instated—good luck with that little man— Number Two— Newt Gingrich and ordinary Americans everywhere are staunchly opposed to the reckless and dangerous bipartisan bill—that sells out the border with almost nothing in return— Number Three— While our border is being overrun and the economy is in not in great shape—the storm clouds of war are becoming a lot more concerning in the middle east— Some say the POWDER KEG is more dangerous now than at any time since the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973—and with war already waging in the Gaza strip and the United States hitting back against persistent terrorist attacks in the region—it appears that weakness in the White House could lead us into yet another avoidable war—this time with Iran— It is funny in a sad way—that every single Republican candidate for President since I can remember—was roasted by the likes of the New York Times and Washington Post as being war mongers that will certainly get America into World War 3— They said it about Richard Nixon—they called Ronald Reagan—Ronald Ray-Gun and mocked the missile defense system that was created back then as Star Wars—Yeah Both George H-W and George W. would certainly get us into a global conflict— BUT nobody was more dangerous with the nuclear football than Donald Trump they screamed—he would be the one that would bring about global annihilation—and yet—President Trump got America into the least amount of global conflict during his first term in office—he negotiated the Abraham Agreements for which he has again been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, of course the globalists will never give him that honor—though he deserves it— And once again the narrative has turned—and this morning we stand on the precipice of a global conflict—and it could start in more than one place— Vladimir Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons if he is pushed into a corner by NATO countries as he continues to grind down the resistance from his invasion into Ukraine—and by the way Russia is still winning and will continue to grind that nation into submission—no matter how much money Lindsey Graham, or Chris Murphy and the rest of the war mongers keep pushing for more money for that country—which I remind you again is neither an ally or a Democracy in any sense of the word at this point— The other flash point that is being looked at closely as we begin the day—is of course Iran—that has been ramping up attacks on the United States and our allies ever since the Hamas terrorist attacks triggered the first war in Israel since 1973— And this is really strange—because Joe Biden, you know the one that Democrats keep bragging is such an expert about world affairs and foreign policy—he had some very important thoughts about Iran, and the possibility of us getting into a war with Tehran—and he made those comments back when he was running for President— Yeah, Donald Trump would get us into a war with Iran—yeah that is what he said—and that is why Robert Gates the Secretary of Defense under Barack Obama—said Joe Biden was wrong on pretty much every position he took on such things for more than 40 years— It seems his track record did not improve with his declining mental abilities—And I want you to hear it again— And as you know—the push for war is strong on Capital Hill—and as much as I despise the Iranian Ayatollah and the regime in Tehran—I would proceed with a lot more caution than some that are calling for an immediate and totally overwhelming attack—some you wouldn't expect to hear from even— I am not sure why someone felt compelled to pull out Mike Pence—BUT there he is—and the war mongers in the military industrial complex are cheering his comments for sure—and believe me—he was not alone— But where is Joe Biden on this? Well, it seems he has not been told yet what his opinion is supposed to be— For those that have actually worn the uniform and fought in the wars of the last 25 years—they are a bit more cautious—BUT it still feels like a war with Iran is becoming inevitable—and sadly unavoidable— I want you to think about that—when you remember the pallet loads of cash delivered in the middle of the night by Barack Obama—and the billions of dollars just recently unfrozen by the Biden Administration— I mean, it would have to cross your mind—that just like an open border is the official US policy—that war with Iran is looking like the official US policy—and will be acted upon sooner rather than later— I hope we can avoid war—BUT I also understand that if Iran is not knocked into next month with a powerful hit—this kind of antagonistic arrogance will continue—and it will cost American lives— A war also makes me wonder—who has come across our open border for the last 3 years—where are they hiding—and what do we need to focus on to make sure possible terrorists that have walked into America in recent years—can be taken out quickly if need be—

Rusty Vanneman, chief investment officer at Orion, says that while the economy has done better than experts forecasts and predictions of a soft- or no-landing scenario are well-reasoned, the leading indicators -- which take a long time to impact the economy -- show that storm clouds remain in place, at least enough so that investors should be cautious. He talks about diversifying into this market to account for those risks. Also on the show, Bryan Armour of Morningstar discusses the firm's latest U.S. fund fees study, which shows that Americans are saving billions by continuing to adhere to cost-conscious strategies, forensic accountant Tracy Coenen discusses in 'Find Me The Money' how couples can and should commingle finances and money-management styles when first connecting to avoid trouble later, and Scott Bennett of Invest With Rules puts his rules to work in the Money Life Market Call.
