They finally told an original story, maman -- or they started to before they were "inspired" by an episode of The Next Generation and did that instead. Alright, fine. Put on your best private detective hat and prepare to get into character as we talk step into the Holodeck and prepare ourselves for inevitable disappointment. In ‘The Practical Joker,' the Enterprise computer gets wacky while Bones, Sulu and Uhura fail to enjoy a primitive Holodeck. In ‘My Way,' Odo uses AI to make girls like him and we get a lot of song and dance numbers (and the best IDW comics pitch) as we meet Vic Fontaine while in Strange New Worlds' Space Adventure Hour, La'an gets to beta-test the Holodeck and nearly kills everyone on the Enterprise doing so. Typical. Bloody Typical.Miles is a Jerk! SHOW NOTES: The Practical Joker (07:50) My Way (28:49) Space Adventure Hour (55:03) TALKING POINTS: The Knives, Doctor Who, the Southern Reach series (and the only film where Miles nearly wet himself in the cinema) Brighton Wok the Legend of Ganja Boxing, TAS actually pulling off some Shacting, Unfortunate stains, a noncanonical reason for Chekov's absence from TAS, Romulan pranks are usually pretty deadly, Hamboning, Odo secretly being a gossipy bitch, Miles and Charlie talk relationship advice, Tom Jones in Star Trek, we come up with the PERFECT IDW Comic pitch, Miles hates when 50s SF TV and Cinema is immediatly shown to be crap, The Last Frontier feels too mean spirited to be affectionate, the cast getting to play, Uhura and Scotty is a great contrast to Uhura at the start of Strange New Worlds, the L'an and Spock pairing seems weird and the show is obsessed with making us know Spock ***ks, Vulcan Walk of Shame, Charlie has tried to Riker a chair (Update: Charlie can still Riker a chair) PEDANT'S CORNER: Top of the Pops and Old Grey Whistle Test are BBC Music shows, there was some BS about flags in the British News hence the strange tangent about flags. Neighbors and Home and Away are two long running Australian soap operas that were incredibly popular in the UK back in the day.

Korby finds Gamble at a doorway to the Vezda prison and the Enterprise goes to rescue him. This is a trap to lure out M'Benga, as he and Gamble need to be together to open the doorway. The crew learn that the unique combination of DNA inside Batel matches the biology of the Beholder statue that guards the prison. To open the doorway without M'Benga and Gamble, the crew devise a plan to simultaneously fire on it from the Enterprise and the Farragut; Spock performs a mind meld with James Kirk so the two can perfectly sync their actions. Pike and Batel enter the prison and confront Gamble, who destroys the Beholder and frees the other Vezda. Using her emerging power, Batel creates an illusion in which she and Pike live a full and happy life together. She then traps all the Vezda in the prison and becomes the Beholder. Pike struggles to move on without Batel as the Enterprise sets out to explore uncharted planets.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!Welcome to Trekcast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast! “Terrarium” While investigating a peculiar area of uncharted space—a region legendary for strange phenomena—the Enterprise finds it impossible to get proper reading from probes due to highly volatile gravimetric waves. Ortegas flies the shuttle Archimedes into the turmoil to gather data firsthand. But when a wormhole suddenly opens up and sends the shuttle tumbling into a moon orbiting a gas giant, Ortegas must fight to survive. She has to find shelter, food, and water, but there's one obstacle she wasn't counting on: the Gorn. With the clock ticking before the moon passes through the planet's thermosphere, the two enemies find common ground. When the Enterprise finally arrives to rescue them, it is revealed that the whole situation was just a test staged by the Metrons. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our journey through Strange New Worlds with “Terrarium.” We discuss the connection to the Original Series classic "Arena," character development for Ortegas, Uhura's stint as a scientist, the Metrons, and more. [Strange New Worlds review starts at 24:56] Anthony and Laurie start with the news, talking about Skydance’s plans for the future and Zachary Quinto’s hope they will include a final Kelvin movie. They cover some of this week’s Star Trek Day announcements (Star Trek Lego! A preschool show!), and preview the Khan audio series. Tony talks about the Strange New Worlds screening & panel at the LA Screenings event in LA on Star Trek Day, and Laurie recaps the Trek to New Jersey convention. Then it’s time to review Strange New Worlds season 3 finale, “New Life and New Civilizations.” They talk about Pike and Batel, Spirk, the Vezda, magic vs. sci-fi, and more, and play the full audio from Tony’s interview with showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, whereupon Laurie goes on a Gorn rant and Tony suggests she focus on celebrating that the end of their storyline has come.

Strange New Worlds “Four-and-a-Half Vulcans”, is an episode that missed the mark despite its intriguing premise. This review dives into the crew's transformation into Vulcans and the ensuing chaos, highlighting standout performances like Melanie Scrofano's Captain Batel amidst the lackluster plot and character inconsistencies. Discover why the episode's attempt at humor and dramatic tension fell flat, and whether its Trekkie nods truly saved it from being excised from the catalog. #StrangeNewWorlds #StarTrek #FourAndAHalfVulcans

Ortegas quickly discovers that a female Gorn pilot is also stranded, but the Gorn saves and protects Ortegas from the moon's dangers. Initially wary due to her traumatic experiences with the Gorn, Ortegas befriends the pilot and discovers that they are not so dissimilar—the two work together to find a way off the moon. At the same time, the Enterprise must soon rendezvous with the Constellation,[c] so Uhura lies about some data to get Pike to take the ship through the wormhole in search of Ortegas. Ortegas and the Gorn ignite the moon's atmosphere, signaling the Enterprise, but La'An kills the Gorn, mistaking her for an enemy. A Metron appears to Ortegas, explaining that they had brought the two together to see if peace between humans and Gorn was possible. Because of La'An's violent reaction, the Metron erases Ortegas' memories of their meeting, planning to study the situation further in the future.[d] Back on the ship, Ortegas mourns her new friend.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!Welcome to Trekcast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast! In its third season Strange New Worlds has gone a long way towards living up to the first word in its title. From its inception, the pre-Kirk (somewhat) Enterprise series promised to avoid the long drawn out arcs that bogged down its predecessor Star Trek: Discovery. No one anticipated the bizarre, random, series of non sequiturs we've been served up this season. While there have been some funny bits, and a few noteworthy bits, most of the seven episodes to date have left viewers scratching their heads. This week, Barry, Brian, Dave and Tod break down the season so far and ask, can the series be saved? Opinions vary, mostly About "Four and a Half Vulcans." There's also a round of What's in the Box and the usual random topics. Thanks for listening!
[Strange New Worlds review starts at 17:06] Anthony and Laurie start this week’s podcast with the news, looking for the meaning behind a new Trek promo on Paramount+, digging into new details on Noah Hawley’s shelved Star Trek movie, and getting tidbits on Starfleet Academy. They go through more of the panels from STLV to get insights into Deep Space Nine, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds, then take a look at SNW on the Nielsen streaming charts. Then it’s time to review Strange New Worlds episode 308, “Terrarium,” which they both liked, although they disagree about a few choices. They play Tony’s interview with Melissa Navia (Ortegas), then wrap up the podcast with a Trek-themed political parody post and a book Laurie wrote a chapter for.

To help our seniors synthesize the many ideas, events, and texts they've surveyed across high school—and to help them better understand their own cultural moment—Heights teachers have developed a senior core class titled “History of Western Thought.” In this episode, Upper School Head Michael Moynihan and long-time teacher Austin Hatch discuss the course and its guide-text: Carl Trueman's Strange New World (2022). HOWT covers essential texts from Plato's Republic to Pope Benedict XVI's “Regensburg Address.”. Its goal is not only to prepare students for college work but to prepare them to meaningfully engage with the culture they will inherit, understanding its origins and its underlying assumptions.
