The episode starts with Flux, an 80s montage inspired track with whaling guitars, then fuses into "Take Me There" which is a dreamy vocal hit. Flux has more plays in general so it is also this weeks Gem Track but Take Me There is a close contender. Next up is "Come Alive" which messes with the listener a little by going into filter house, similar to the old sound of Daft Punk. Since both genres are inspired by the 80s and even the 70s it seems to fuse well, especially with the upbeat energy. 80s Child continues this energy with a nice filter house breakdown and 80s guitar solo. After, "Not Over" rounds out the segment with a high energy house tune with a pitched vocal hook. More guitar riffs round out this area of the set. "Woah, Yea!" comes in with a talkbox bass similar also to Daft Punk. Remember, this episode is all about Nostalgia. Jiggawatt and Future start to settle the energy down a bit with Lonely Vice and Night Drive taking over a melancholic vibe. The episode ends with BLIND's Auckland Remix from Top Gear 2, made in 2009. A true plein air painter, Emily Imeson has spent the last two years living a nomadic lifestyle travelling around Australia with her partner in their beloved Troopy 4WD.   For much of that time Emily’s studio has been the Australian outback. Whether she's using the side of the car as an easel or working flat on the ground of the Australian desert, she is engulfed by her surroundings and transfers that experience onto the canvas. A few days before COVID caused a lockdown in Australia, I visited Saint Cloche Gallery in Paddington to see Emily‘s latest solo show. Called 'Take Me There', it was a collection of works she created on her travels. They were powerful and evocative paintings.  She has exhibited in six solo shows across Australia and has had work in many more group shows and last year she was awarded the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist prize. What struck me most when I spoke with Emily, though, was her close connection with nature and the Australian environment and her understanding of the significant relationship Indigenous communities have and have had with the land. Her aim is to convey that connection to the viewer and to remind us that we were always meant to be closely connected with nature.  I'll be uploading a short video of Emily and her work to this website and the Talking with Painters YouTube channel soon. Aging Well For Life
How Autophagy Can Add Years of Great Health For Us Boomers!

Aging Well For Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2019 5:31

Hello and welcome to health bites! HEALTH BITES is a short podcast meant to provide you with some basic understanding of the often-times complex concepts that are central to the many biological processes responsible for extending our health span. Today, I want to share with you the awe and mystery of autophagy. Autophagy plays a leading role in many of the life-hacks that have a major impact on your health-span. We touched a bit on it back when I talked about zombie cells. Mechanism of cellular authophagy, illustration for Nobel Prize Award in Medicine 2016. 3D illustration showing fusion of lysosome with autophagosome containing microbes and molecules Autophagy literally means self-eating and that is exactly what happens to cells when they are in the state of autophagy. They literally consume all the junk protein by-products from everyday metabolism along with other pieces of cellular components that accumulate within the cells. Your body then breaks it down and re-uses the basic components for other cellular processes. This process is related to apoptosis, where cells commit suicide and die. In the great scheme of things autophagy is a cells 1st line of defense when it is damaged and becoming non-functional. If autophagy fails to get the cell back to functionality, then they throw in the towel and commit hari-cari, through the process of apoptosis. That's a good thing because it triggers your body to produce new cells to replace them. There are several types of autophagy. The differences are in the type of cell that the autophagy occurs and what triggers it within those cells. For those of us interested in health-span we are more interested in two forms of autophagy. One is mitophagy. This occurs when your mitochondria, the little engines of our cells, go through the process of autophagy. This results in our mitochondria becoming more efficient, much like a tune-up for your car. It enables our metabolism to run more efficiently without causing oxidative stress on our bodies. Mitophagy also causes our body to create new mitochondria so it's like throwing a new engine into that car of yours. That's a good thing. If mitophagy is diminished by age or other processes than it could lead to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's' disease and kidney disease. The other prominent anti-aging autophagy is called Xenophagy. This is how the cells of your immune system remembers threats from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Autophagy is a vital function for maintaining our health. So how do we help our bodies to increase our level of autophagy? Autophagy is typically triggered when our bodies are in stress. This can often come from external stresses such as changes in our environment such as the heat stress produced by sitting in a hot sauna or from exercise. Exercise has been shown to effectively trigger autophagy in the brain, and with the liver, pancreas, adipose tissues and muscles. This is one of the reasons why exercise is so effective at increasing health-span as well as helping to protect us against chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neuro-degenerative diseases.   Fasting also triggers autophagy in our entire body. Particularly with prolonged fasting of 3 days or more.  Dr. Valter Longo, out of USC, has found that prolonged fasting with the fasting mimicking diet, will substantially increase autophagy throughout your entire body. The beauty of the fasting mimicking diet is that it provides the health and anti-aging benefits of a traditional 5 -day water fast while it prevents the extreme hunger cravings, along with other potential health risks.   Incorporating exercise and periodic prolonged fasting into your lifestyle can have very powerful anti-aging affects on your life. The two founding members of CAEZAR, Chris Quigley and Rich Gillsdecided to take their passion for music to the next level when the pair found themselves both suffering from sports injuries that meant they would no longer be able to play rugby for their local club. It was under the lights of the rugby pitch where the two ex-players decided that they would take their previously hidden musical talents to the stage. When Zoe joined the band in 2017, the trio really found their niche. Her soft synths and sweet-as-honey backing vocals helped build on the unique crossover of pop, indie and rock elements that make up the band's special sound. CAEZAR's new single 'Take Me There'is an indie-pop ballad with a difference; featuring soaring harmonies from both Chris and Zoe in the infectious chorus, the piece is unabashedly vulnerable and simultaneously uplifting. A beautifully introspective track, the lyrics ask something that many can relate to, "Trust me I can fight / These demons inside", speaking to the struggle we all face with our inner selves. Pairing this poignant and hopeful message with CAEZAR's signature sound that combines skillfully-played live instruments and expertly produced electronic beats with strong, melodic lead vocals, the band manages to create something undeniably unique, that will certainly touch any that hear it.   On their new single release, CAEZARcomment, "A recurring theme throughout this EP is 'movement'. Whether it's excitement, remorse or anticipation - Take Me There is the final expression of this movement - the longing for escape. It's easy to become faded by the weight of day-to-day life, so we wanted to write about the inspiration and hope of striving for something better. The vocal samples and irregular dream beat provides a haunting melody which acts as the perfect crescendo for this journey and for this EP." Hail! EP:1. Waiting 2. Hold On 3. Somewhere New 4. One Sound Design turntable, a pitch controlled Sound Design dual cassette deck, and a two-channel Numark mixer. Later to move on to two Technics 1200 turntables and a Denon DJ mixer. At a young age he realized his desire to spin music for the masses. It first started when he and his friends would breakdance and listen to music via cassettes. He and his friends would come together to battle each other with moves and develop routines to perfect the art. Realizing the need to continuously change out cassettes, he quickly realized the need to blend music. Also with Freestyle music merging on the scene and rising on the airwaves, he quickly realized his passion. Collecting 12” Freestyle vinyl in the early years, he began to immerse himself behind the decks for countless hours to create mixtapes for his friends, all the while teaching himself the art of beat mixing, transitions, simple scratch, beat counting and editing. Especially it is necessary to stress such a work entitled: D33P - Stigma Moe Turk Remix and of course WD2N - Do not Need You Moe Turk Remix. For Lindsay Broughton, Country Music is home. It’s the quiet, country house, white picket fence, and the rocking chair on the porch. Not a surprising association, as she was raised with music as a constant companion throughout her childhood in Brooklin, Ontario. For all her life, no matter what changes headed her way, music has always been there for her. Initially gaining inspiration from her performing mother, as soon as Lindsay was old enough she began performing. She became well and truly bit by the bug in high school, where she learned the guitar and joined the local songwriting club. As part of a field trip, she went to Nashville, where even then her potential was noticed. Arriving back to Brooklin, encouraged by the praise received in Nashville, she was more determined than ever to hone her craft and pursue a career in music. Fast forward: Lindsay has been a regular at the famous Boots & Hearts festival, has played at many CCMA showcases as well as the CMAO Awards show, and has shared the stage with some of country’s heavy hitters such as Chad Brownlee, Emerson Drive and Gord Bamford. Now, her debut full length album entitled Take Me There has been released with thecurrent radio single of the same name written by Lindsay. The album is pulled from real life experiences, but focuses on the cycle we have all gone through at some point; love, loss, and redemption. The single challenges the listener to think back to the moments in their lives that made them the happiest. It’s a toe-tapping, gritty, up-tempo song that encourages you to roll the car window down, relax, and say “bring it on” to whatever lies ahead.
