Wedding Empires Podcast - Grow and Market Your Dream Wedding Business
Ask Jac & Ben A Question!Tired of being a "glorified hobbyist" in the wedding industry? In this eye-opening conversation with business coach Tammy Johnston, we uncover the crucial mindset shifts and practical strategies needed to transform your wedding business from struggling side-hustle to profitable enterprise.Tammy pulls no punches as she dissects the common pitfalls trapping so many talented wedding professionals. The harsh truth? Being excellent at photography, planning, or floristry isn't enough – true success requires mastering the eight fundamental pillars of business that apply across all industries. Most wedding pros are spending 85-90% of their time perfecting their craft when successful business owners allocate just 10-15% to service delivery. We dive deep into pricing strategies that account for your true costs (hint: you're probably drastically undercharging), marketing approaches that don't rely solely on social media, and system development that frees you from being a "professional plate spinner." Tammy's practical advice on maintaining client relationships long after the wedding day reveals untapped revenue potential through referrals that most pros completely miss.Perhaps most valuable is her guidance on team building – focusing not on when to hire but who to hire to complement your weaknesses rather than duplicate your strengths. Her three actionable steps provide an immediate roadmap for wedding professionals ready to elevate their business acumen and profitability.Whether you're just starting your wedding business journey or looking to break through a growth plateau, this episode delivers the straight talk and strategic insight needed to stop being a "volunteer in the wrong line" and start building the profitable business you deserve. Today's episode features the three births of Gold Coast mother, Tammy. Although her first birth, in the hospital, was a drug-free physiological birth, she details being left with hints of birth trauma from the sheer intensity of it. She took what she learned from that birth into her second, where her son made a speedy entrance earthside at home. Her final birth was the peak of her birth wisdom, after having a moment of awakening when she ultimately let go of every ounce of control and experienced the truest form of surrender. Tammy shares the plan moving forward once meconium was discovered in her leaking waters, and how one comment by a midwife at the hospital planted the seed of confidence in her to birth her future babies at home. As an empath and an entrepreneur the struggle to find balance between the creative and soulful side and the strategic money making side has always been a challenge for me. The idea of charging people money for a service I absolutely love doing wasn't easy to navigate and learn! This topic is so interesting because I know I can't be the only one who has struggled with this, right? In Tammy's words, 76% of employees work for a small business. That fact blew my mind! The media sensationalizes larger companies, but what about small business owners? What are the obstacles standing in their way of living the entrepreneurial dream and scaling? Why has it become so difficult to run a business the right way and survive? My guest today shares her thoughts and her mission on this subject! Meet Tammy Tammy Johnston is the Hold Your Hand and Kick Your Ass Business Coach. She has been working with Small Business Owners for over 20 years to help them build sustainable and successful businesses. She doesn't promise a magic bullet (because there is no such thing), but she does teach all the foundational skills you need to first survive and then thrive. She only deals in real, practical, put it to use training and advice that has been tested in battle. What is your fave quote? Kaizen. It isn't a quote, it is a philosophy. Do you know the group Bony M? Haven't heard of that group in a while, eh? Don't ya know? I made a new Canadian friend, Tammy Johnston, who quickly replied to a FB post about holiday music. Turns out Tammy loves all things Christmas but does not believe in God. And that's ok...she shared "Mary's Boy Child" with us all. She fell in love with this song when she was a child. When she got a little older, she realized it was a "religious" song but the memories and feelings attached to it made her love it still. Her mom would always turn up the radio and they'd dance!! Funny to think we were all dependent on the radio to some extent "back then". She brought up a great point though...the radio, dictating what you will hear next, offers a certain element of surprise! I had never heard this song so it is new to me this year. Check out the playlist on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube to see if you remember it too or need to add it to your playlist this holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!! Full Show Notes

I'm super excited to interview Tammy Johnson today. She's my dear guest all the way from Canada. I love to interview people from different time zones. So this has got to be a really fun interview because I love chatting with Tammy and I just have to start this interview otherwise, we're just going to go on all day. But I think today it's going to be really great podcast because I know during this current pandemic and changes in our economy, a lot of people are looking at other ways to make money or create multiple streams of income. And not surprisingly many people look at starting their own business or taking their skills and experience into bringing it in terms of making a product or service into the world. So a lot of people are thinking, can they adapt? Can they transition? So I think Tammy's story and expertise can really help a lot of small business owners or want to start people to have a think and maybe take some notes about this. Sze Wing (01:02): So I really hope this is going to be a useful interview for a lot of those people, but also it's going to be lots of fun. So a little short introduction, Tammy is a speaker educator business owner and author. She specialized in helping small business owners and solo-preneurs since 2003. And she's a small business expert on the stage in the classroom and in the media outlet for two decades. So she definitely got the experience and when she started out, she had small kids, actually babies. So for those who are moms like myself, we also going to learn from Tammy in terms of how to balance it all. I mean, balance is a kind of like a dream state, but how to do it all, like without going insane, I think. I also think this is a great opportunity too, for some existing small business owner who wants to turn things around or speed up your journey for success, or like brand new people who want to really start off on the right food.
