8 Important Green Marketing Strategies for Eco-Friendly Ecommerce Brands The environment has been playing on everyone's mind lately. Activism around climate change and a surge of sustainable products has created a new shopping landscape packed full of purpose-driven initiatives and eco-friendly ventures. People want to save the planet. It's the only one we've got, after all (until we can populate Mars or maybe the moon, but that's a long way off). Consumers are keen to buy from brands that have the same beliefs as them and that are openly showing their hand when it comes to doing better for the world, its creatures, and its communities. Green marketing is both the act of creating environmentally friendly products and marketing them in a sustainable way. Not to be confused with greenwashing, where big-name brands pretend they're doing their bit for the planet but are actually using it as a front to build favor with shoppers. Green marketing can look like a number of things in action. It can look like an eco-friendly product, sustainable packaging, recyclable materials, purpose-driven business practices, or simply marketing messages focused on Doing Good Things. At its core, it's promoting sustainable products in sustainable ways from a sustainable business foundation. Green Marketing VS Greenwashing We hinted at greenwashing above, but let's dig a little deeper into what this increasingly common phrase actually means. We've all seen it in action: big brands loudly voicing their stance on the planet and throwing money at campaigns to prove they're acting in sustainable ways. But, unlike green marketing that actually promotes an eco-friendly product in an eco-friendly way, greenwashing is when a business spends more money and resources on marketing themselves as a sustainable brand than actually being a sustainable brand. This is by no means a new thing. Throwback to the 80s, when Chevron (an oil company, no less) commissioned a series of print ads to showcase its dedication to helping the environment. In reality, the brand's infamous “The People Do” campaign ran in tandem with them actively violating the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Today, greenwashing is everywhere, from fast fashion brands like Uniqlo (whose cute fictional cat, Doraemon, wasn't quite cute enough to cover up the brand's impact on the planet), to major banks, furniture stores, food brands (we're looking at you Nestle), and everything in between. Enough about greenwashing, though. Here are some actual green marketing success stories. 5. Successful Green Marketing Examples in Action Outdoor clothing brand Patagonia prides itself on being the antithesis to fast fashion. Its Worn Wear initiative lets customers trade in their old, worn clothing to buy a new item or a pre-loved garment. The idea is that customers invest in their clothing to extend its life rather than throwing it away the moment it gets tired and holey. This isn't just a “look good” campaign. Every part of it has been created with sustainability in mind–the returned clothing is cleaned using CO2 technology to save water and energy. Everyone wants to make their home look good, and Shades of Green appreciates this–in a sustainable way. The brand's focus is on creating healthier living spaces decorated with non-toxic, eco-friendly products and providing educational content on green building products and practices. Phone cases are notoriously throwaway items. Pela noticed this and wanted to do something about it. Their products are made solely from sustainable materials as they strive for a waste-free future. As well as biodegradable iPhone and iPad cases, Pela sells eco-friendly watch straps, sunglasses, and accessories. On top of sustainable materials, the brand practices key green initiatives, like improving its manufacturing efficiencies and offsetting its carbon footprint through carbon credits. Ten Thousand Villages wanted to shine a spotlight on talented artisans from across the globe–many...

Business with Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2019 55:36

Do you realize how much power you have as a consumer? I’m serious. There’s that famous quote that I use all the time which is “You vote every single day by the way you spend your money.” and over the last couple of years, I’ve found that this is truer than ever… your beliefs drive how you purchase goods and services and companies that don’t adhere to your personal values or beliefs, more often than not, don’t get your money. And money talks. But… that doesn’t mean that you just buy a product SIMPLY because you believe in the values behind it… there’s a whole lot more to it and it’s something that my guest today has spent nearly 20 years working to study... 5:10 - The Llenay 101 Llenay’s Ferretti’s success as a fashion designer gave her a robust knowledge of international sourcing as well as access to iconic industry mentors. It also paved the way for her future in fair-trade. Fair-trade found Llenay after she met women basket weavers on a 2001 volunteer trip to Uganda with 10,000 Villages. Llenay’s skills in pattern, color, and textile helped the women reimagine their beautiful patterns for capturing market. After working as the Executive Director for 10,000 Villages, Llenay started her own organization in 2007 called Bahavana World Project. Bahavana World Project brings technical skills and services to women’s organizations in the developing world. In 2016, Llenay joined the 10,000 Villages board and is currently the acting CEO while the organization searches for a permanent CEO. 10:05 - Our Purchases Are Powerful When people have access to growth and fairly paid work, their lives can change significantly by giving them the tools to sustain themselves.  Consumers have the power to shape the market in the ways they chose to invest their dollars. This is as true in the fashion industry as it is in fair-trade, and purchasing decisions affect everyone in the global community. These days, consumers are much more aware of the impact they have on the global community with conscious and ethical participation in fair-trade purchases. Consumers who are not involved in fair-trade purchases sometimes ask: “Isn’t that job better than no job?” This idea does not apply to vulnerable communities working in unsafe conditions for unfair wages. Working for fair wages eliminates the vulnerability of being stuck in a cycle of exploitation. Control should be in the hands of both the maker and the buyer. 10,000 Villages gives interest advances and pays artists in full for products, creating a risk-free financial environment where artists don’t have to wait an unreasonable amount of time to be paid.  20:40 - The Demand For Transparency All businesses need to be transparent, and consumers should know how workers are treated and how they are paid. The April 24th, 2013 Rana Plaza Complex Disaster in Bangladesh started a global demand for transparency and for workers to be treated with dignity and respect.  A campaign was started by the Fashion Revolution organization that asked companies “Who made my clothes?” instead of “Where were my clothes made?” 10,000 Villages has used a model of transparency from day one. Having the artisan tell their stories for 70 years has built sustainability and trust with both artisans and consumers. The addition of fair-trade practices by large fashion brands like J.Crew, Athleta (Gap), Target, etc., has created more accountability in the industry: In the past, companies would simply pass off stories of artisans as checking the fair-trade box, but if it’s not well made, on trend, and functional, it’s just creates a one-time pity purchase.  Fair-trade organizations work toward proving that women are being educated, children are going to school, people’s medical needs are being fulfilled, housing is available, and college education is accessible. Transparency should reveal an equal respect in a trading relationship, and build a long-term commitment between makers and markets. 32:40 - Connecting Makers To Markets  The mission of 10,000 Villages is to link makers to markets through fair-trade, sustainable, long-term relationships. A personal connection in every step of the transaction is key.  The voice of the consumer matters; you actually can shop your values! 10,000 Villages refreshed their brand by inviting the consumer into maker stories even more.  Now the goal is to establish a value chain that communicates everything from maker to the market, encouraging the consumer to join the movement. Industries need to base their practices on consumer needs in order to keep up with a changing market. Women around the world want the same things for their children and their communities. Llenay’s inspiration moving forward is to be able to demonstrate her values not only through her career, but also as a consumer.  48:23 - Getting to Know Our Guest: Find out Llenay’s Fav TV Shows (think old school Saturday mornings), recent kitchen successes, and what’s on her reading list.  47:34 - New Question Time! Llenay answers it first: “What Does It Mean To You To Run A Business With Purpose?” “It means to have my personal values and my outward expression in the world aligned and it means that I am living my personal best life and hopefully helping others by doing that.” 5:58 A Memorable Moment [spp-tweet tweet="Safe working conditions and a fair wage is a human right and the dignity of work should embrace that, not exploit people for how they can benefit a corporation or a capitalist system." - Llenay Ferretti] Meet Your Guest: As the founder and CEO of Bhavana World Project, since 2007, Llenay has worked to bridge the gap between fair trade artisans and U.S. companies to create successful and sustainable market access through partnerships within the public and private sectors. She has consulted for East Africa Trade Hub; focusing on business development and training programs for more than 200 fair trade groups in Asia and Africa. Llenay has also been working with Ten Thousand Villages for many years, as the Executive Director, a national board member, and now, as the organization’s Acting CEO. As a global maker-to-market movement, Ten Thousand Villages connects artisans in developing countries with conscious shoppers in the U.S. offering ethically sourced gifts, home wares and fashion accessories crafted by hand. Every product generates sustainable income — and impact — for 20,000 makers in 30 countries who earn a fair, living wage in safe working conditions. Through her leadership at Ten Thousand Villages and Bhavana World Project, Llenay has more than twenty years of experience in international business development, product design, business management, and fair trade standards and certification. “I believe that by providing artisans with the tools to grow their businesses creates the driving force behind projects in developing economies. This has been the driving force behind the development of Ten Thousand Villages and Bhavana World Project. Working with each of the artisan groups that I have had the privilege to connect with has shown me that equality in development can affect both individual and collective transformation, which has direct impact on artisan processes, product outcomes, and their market sustainability.” Llenay’s educational background includes an Executive Masters of International Service from American University in Washington D.C. and certifications in USAID Economic Evaluation Basics, USAID Monitoring and Evaluation, and USAID M&E Fundamentals from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. As well as a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA. And from 2015-2017, she served on the United States Trade Representative Advisory Committee on Africa, a Presidential appointment during the Obama Administration. The Fair Trade Federation is an association that works to elevate and strengthen fair trade partners in the United States and Canada. It's a key partner in the global fair trade movement. On this edition of the podcast, we catch up with the organization's executive director, Chris Solt. Things You Don't Want To Miss: Come To The Fair Trade Federation Conference!  1:20 - I'm going to be speaking at the Fair Trade Federation Conference in Austin, Texas in March. If you live in the area, you need to come check it out. There will be all sorts of speakers, fair trade organizations showing their wares, breakout sessions, and much more. For more information, visit fairtradefederation.org. The Chris 101. 3:45 - Chris takes us all the way back to the beginning and shares the story of his upbringing in Vermont and Ohio. Chris' father was a band director, and he grew up learning to play the drums, bass, guitar, piano, and many other instruments. He was even in a band, and he just knew he'd become a musician. He chose to skip college and become a recording engineer while working in Border's in Cleveland. In 1999, Chris became a father and attended college. His degree in Social Science landed him in a Ten Thousand Villages store, and it ultimately changed his path completely. Following A Different Path.   8:04 - Chris took a job with a company called Ten Thousand Villages. It's a nonprofit that markets fair trade artisan products to alleviate poverty around the world. While there, Chris learned how commerce and retail could be leveraged to impact lives and boost local economies. Becoming The Executive Director At The Fair Trade Federation.  10:58 - A friend connected with Chris and led him down the path toward working with the Fair Trade Federation where he now serves as their executive director. How Do We Find Our Calling?  12:38 - Maybe you grew up wanting to be a teacher or a doctor, so you went to school and turned your passions into a profession. However, maybe your path hasn't been as clear. Chris shares how his life experiences in his twenties led him toward his calling later in life. What Is The Fair Trade Federation?  14:10 - The fair trade industry consists of more than coffee, tea, and chocolate. There are all sorts of businesses involved, and the Fair Trade Federation is a trade association that seeks to strengthen and promote these organizations. Their mission is to build equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and create opportunities to alleviate poverty. The Fair Trade Federation works with all sorts of wholesalers, retailers, nonprofits, and faith communities. These organizations seek to promote justice and provide opportunities for laborers all over the world to find dignity in their work while sustaining their livelihood. How The Fair Trade Federation Operates.  19:50 - The federation operates under principles of transparency and accountability for the purposes of creating opportunities, promoting fair trade, ensuring fair wages, and developing safe working conditions for laborers. They also fight for the rights of children, cultivate environmental stewardship and respect cultural identity. These seem like high standards, but the organization seeks to guarantee the products being sold by federation members haven't come at the cost of someone's health or dignity. The Fair Trade Federation wants its members to put fair trade in the very DNA of how they operate. How The Fair Trade Federation Operates.  23:50 - The Fair Trade Federation works with all sorts of marginalized communities. They want to alleviate poverty and suffering, and they want to be a resource for those trapped in modern-day slavery. A Story From Nepal.  26:16 - Chris shares the story of a trip to India and Nepal in 2008. While there he partnered alongside an organization called New Sadle which works exclusively with victims of leprosy. These victims are seen as outcasts in their villages and are even considered to be cursed. Consider Your Purchases.  27:08 - Walk through Walmart and consider a $1.99 t-shirt. While that graphic tee might be harmless to you, there's a real possibility it was put together by an indentured servant on the other side of the world. We must consider where our money is going. Chris Explains The Difference Between The Fair Trade Federation And The World Fair Trade Organization.  30:30 - In short, the Fair Trade Federation is based in the United States in Canada while the World Fair Trade Organization is worldwide. A Difficult Question.  34:49 - Can something be ethical and not be fair trade? While this is a challenging concept to consider, the answer is absolutely. The Fair Trade Federation sets a high bar for its retailers, and not every well-meaning company qualifies. The fair trade movement is a spectrum, and while the term "fair trade" can get nebulous, any movement toward becoming fair trade is to be applauded. The simple step of adding transparency to a business can change lives. Fair Trade Is A Learning Process.  41:22 - You don't change the world overnight, and you don't change your behavior overnight. It takes time to educate yourself about what it means to support fair trade and ethically made goods. It's easy to be discouraged, but take heart. The small steps you're taking really do impact lives. Chris Shares More Details About The Fair Trade Federation Conference.  45:57 - This conference runs March 26-28th in Austin Texas. It's the 25th anniversary of the federation. While it's a professional conference, it's a great opportunity to learn about the fair trade industry, and the expo portion of the conference is open to the public. Getting To Know Our Guest: 52:20 - We take a moment to get to know Chris a little bit better by quizzing him on his favorite tv shows, meals, and guilty pleasures. A Memorable Moment: "When it began to click for me, I realized there is no piece of jewelry, there is no pair of shoes, there is no t- shirt that is worth someone else's life being treated as not worthy just so I can buy that item." - Molly Stillman   To visit the Business With Purpose website, click the link: https://www.stillbeingmolly.com/2019/02/20/business-purpose-podcast-chris-solt-fair-trade-federation/

In this episode, Jerrid and Courtney discuss Benefit Corporations, also known as B Corps. To obtain a B Corp certification, organizations must adhere to a set of guiding principles that involve the betterment of people and the planet. This process may also include site visits.  Another component of becoming a B Corp deals with legal status. As is the case with other business classifications, registering as a B Corp may impact taxation rates.Although a worthy certification, many people outside of the social justice and social entrepreneurial fields may not know about B Corps. However, as consumers, having this awareness could help people make more informed decisions about which businesses to the patron. Take a coffee shop for instance. Customers may decide to choose Coffee Shop A over Coffee Shop B if they discovered that Coffee Shop A paid its employees a livable wage and operated sustainably.   B Corps are still in the business of making money—they would not be able to survive otherwise. They just earn profits in a way that gives more than they take. In doing so, this philosophy encourages organizations to have larger conversations within their internal ecosystems and with shareholders. All the same, not every social enterprise has gone the B Corp route. Reasons include not seeing the value, not being able to afford it, or simply not qualifying. In the Central Florida area, examples of B Corps include Clean the World, Downtown Credo, and Ten Thousand Villages. Some B Corps may identify themselves to consumers with a sign on the door or next to the cash register. Information of this type is becoming increasingly important to consumers as they use their money to support various causes.Teaching Change Shout-outsFor more information on topics discussed during the show, see the list below. What are B Corps?Clean the WorldDowntown CredoTen Thousand Villages
