According to data from Finder.com, the average Brit now spends 4 hours and 14 minutes using their smartphone each day. It's hardly surprising; smartphone use has grown consistently over the last 15 years, to the extent that the devices have become almost like an extension of our arms and hands. Given we tend to hold our phones out in front of us when using them, our heads bow down in quite an unnatural position to look at the screen. And doing so for extended periods can cause posture problems, which is what American chiropractor Dr Dean Fishman realised back in 2008. That was while examining a 17-year-old patient who had booked an appointment for neck pains and headaches. Fishman went on to coin the term “text neck” to describe her condition. What exactly does text neck look like? What's the difference between text neck and text neck wrinkles? What can people do to avoid bad postures and the complications that they cause? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Why is my circadian rhythm so important? Is it a bad idea to fall asleep in front of screens? We spend a lot of time hunched over creating chest tightness. We hunch over our keyboards, over e-readers, over laptops, and we hunch over our phones. All this time spent curling over our devices can create tightness in our chest and put extra strain on your back and neck. Going Pro Yoga (Formerly the Yoga Teacher Evolution Podcast)
This week's episode of Going Pro is all about… you guessed it! Text Neck. With Paul back in the studio alongside Michael, the two discuss what text neck is and how both the effects of the pandemic and the effects of our modern habits have affected the human body. Both very knowledgeable in the world of fascia, Paul shares the new habits he's seen in his students' postures in general and more specifically in their asana practices as a product of all the time we spend sitting, texting, and on our computers in modern society. Michael shares a personal story of his own relationship to his posture when he was younger, and breaks down how one can overcome the slouch many people have developed. They also discuss the nature of fascia to change and harden to the shapes it is most frequently in. Our bodies are trying to support our day to day lives so by communicating that we prioritize this “texting position,” our bodies try to shift and adapt to best support that activity. Together Paul and Michael give suggestions for how to improve text neck and release emotion that is being stored in our fascia. This includes but is not limited to a description of yoga poses that one can do in the comfort of their own home or in class to help relieve and open up the fascia that we are scrunching up in the thoracic spine. 00:00 Introduction 01:45 What Paul notices in power yoga students 02:43 Fascia and text neck 05:26 Thoracic spine and posture shifts post Covid 07:05 Storage of Emotion in the body 14:02 Talking to release emotion and free the fascia 15:27 Solutions for text neck 17:25 Yin yoga and positions to help the spine --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/goingproyoga/message

Featuring: Ram Haddas, MD Text neck is described as a repetitive stress injury or overuse syndrome in the neck. It is caused by prolonged use of mobile devices with the head bent down and not moving. According to recent research literature, smartphone users spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads dropped down. This results in “700 to 1,400 hours a year of excess stress on the cervical spine. High schoolers may be most at risk, as they could spend an additional 5,000 hours per year in this position. Recently, spine providers have noticed an increase in patients with neck and upper back pain, likely related to poor posture during prolonged smartphone use. Children and adolescents may be at a higher risk and experience shoulder and arm pain, eye strain, stress, anxiety, depression and decreased school performance. Hosts Laura and Carletta are joined by special guest Dr. Michael Carey to discuss how to keep your body active and well while you're working! Mike shares tips and tricks for stretching, posture, and keeping yourself from the dreaded Zoom fatigue! Podcast Notes: In this episode, our guest Dr. Michael Carey, chiropractor and executive director of What the Strong do to RISE, explains how working from home has affected our posture. Dr. Carey believes there are two pandemics here, COVID-19 and the "Flat Butt Syndrome" caused by the lack of movement in the last few years. Learn how to escape from Flat Butt Syndrome with some helpful tips below: Dr. Carey talks about Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS), also known as "Text-Neck". UCS is caused by poor posture (such as looking down at your phone and texting). Over time, your disks start to compress and that can lead to neck and back pain. It is important to reset your posture throughout the day, but if you have been experiencing pain, the VRC offers a Low Back Care and Pain Prevention class, every Tuesday and Thursday, to help you improve your posture in order to stay pain-free. One of Dr. Carey's favorite tools to use for stretching is a 36-inch Foam Roller. Check it out on Amazon here. Check out Dr. Carey's Foam Rolling videos on the VRC YouTube page to learn Basic Foam Rolling for the Lower Body and Basic Foam Rolling for the Upper Back. Experiencing pain but don't have a Foam Roller handy? Dr. Carey also mentions two of his favorite stretches to do without a Foam Roller: Bruegger's Stretch and Figure 4 Stretch. Learn how you can even do these stretches at your desk by checking out the videos on the VRC YouTube page! Find more information about us at VEBAResourceCenter.com

Creating an ergonomically correct workstation or desk for work or learning is important for our overall health and critical to avoiding muscle strains, forward head posture, joint pain and other issues.
Parents should pay attention to how their kids are sitting at their desk, playing on their devices and carrying their backpacks because maintaining good ergonomics is critical to healthy spine growth, good posture and body development.
