The Outsiders (1983), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), and Say Anything (1989). This week, Janet, John (and Pen) take a look at three films that explore the lives of teenagers and angst in the 80s with very different tones and intentions. Whether the story explores a teen in the perfect urban home with mom, dad, and kid sister, a real loner with a dream, or only finding solace with a gang of other misfit kids, everyone wants to connect. "Could You Describe The Ruckus, Slackers?”Emilio Estevez. Anthony Michael Hall. Andrew McCarthy. Judd Nelson. Molly Ringwald. Ally Sheedy. Rob Lowe. Demi Moore. You know them - you love them - they are the Brat Pack! Starting with 1983's The Outsiders, these 6 young actors were cast side by side in many of the movies our generation hold dear. For nearly 10 years, they were considered the “go to” actors for projects across all genres of film. While their movie careers may have tapered off in the 90's, many have found success behind the camera or have continued their acting careers on television. I have to be honest though, some of these movies - I have never even heard of much less seen! I mean, who has seen Blue City?!I also give some thoughts on the demise of MTV News. For a few years in the 90's, Tabatha Soren and Kurt Loder were our news anchors, becoming an important voice in media during the 1992 presidential campaign, and breaking "hard" news like the death of Kurt Cobain.
S.E. Hinton's classic book The Outsiders has influenced an entire generation of young people, and has inspired artists to create various adaptations. The most well-known of these is Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film starring Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, and Diane Lane. In this episode, producer Fred Roos recounts the story of how Coppola's intense and unique casting process allowed him to discover the perfect cast.
Whatever, Slackers, whatever...according to the inter webs, and even some Gen Xers, we can be distilled down to the word "whatever". Using a good old Google search, I checked out some websites that claimed to have the definitive list of what characteristics, traits, and cultural markers make up Gen X. Some of these lists are just cliches that don't exactly line up with my own experiences growing up. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely things here that I can't really dispute...I'm just not sure that our generation is that easily classified and frankly, we are a pretty diverse group. What do you consider to be defining characteristics of Gen X?And...have you hit that subscribe button yet?The video version of the podcast is available at https://youtu.be/5l9r1wXern4

Staying gold is hard enough for the average person, but for the crime-entwined characters of Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 “The Outsiders,” it seems near impossible. Featuring a cast of young hotties, the movie was a springboard into total movie stardom for many. Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, and Tom Cruise are just some of the notable “Greasers” featured in this beloved, based-on-a-book drama. Now, decades later, do the gang-related hijinks hit as hard? Why is Rob Lowe in a bath towel so memorable? And, would we date “Dallas” in this day and age? The Old Roommates get their “jollies” and give the classic a rewatch. Listen to this. The Outsiders is a 1983 American coming-of-age drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, an adaptation of the 1967 novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton. The film was released on March 25, 1983. Jo Ellen Misakian, a librarian at Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno, California, and her students were responsible for inspiring Coppola to make the film.[2] The film is noted for its cast of up-and-coming stars, including C. Thomas Howell (who garnered a Young Artist Award), Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane. The film helped spark the Brat Pack genre of the 1980s. Both Lane and Dillon went on to appear in Coppola's related film Rumble Fish; Dillon and Estevez also starred in Tex (1982). Emilio Estevez went on to write and star in That Was Then... This Is Now (1985), the only S. E. Hinton film adaptation not to star Matt Dillon. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, most notably the performances, particularly Macchio being singled out for praise, and performed well at the box office, grossing $33.7 million on a $10.0 million budget. And as always, we close the show with recommendations: S.E. Hinton has a host of recommendations 'Lost City of Z' by David Grann (and the recent movie adaptation starring Robert Pattinson and Charlie Hunan, as well), 'The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women Across The Ancient World' by Andrienne Mayor, and 'The Dry' by Jane Harper. She also recommends rereading Jane Austen. "I reread her novels every year, and I always find some new trick she has pulled. Aliza recommends journalist Lauren Duca's Teen Vogue column 'Thigh-high Politics.' You can check out her latest story here. "She goes through big things from the week in a way that I personally find funny and engaging. It helps narrow what people should be paying attention to." Peter recommends rewatching the anime 'Trigun.' "It's really wonderful. It starts off silly but it gets really deep, in its own. I love the characters and I love the environment and I love the story it wants to tell. MJ recommends listening to 'Nancy,' WNYC's new LGBTQ podcast. "It is so damn good ... It's a really, really great, empathetic, moving podcast."

Spoony superenthusiast Emily-ann Herrington thought that appearing as a guest on the show would be a good for a lark. how wrong she was. But with an onslaught of japes aimed at everything from her country of origin to her pop culture preferences raining down upon her, she serves it right back with wit and gusto. Also, she's the earliest late guest the show has ever had, so bonus points for that. Other topics include the end of film, life on the potato picking line, Winnipeg's surprisingly high murder rate, and the never-ending nomenclature war between soda and pop. Music by Kelly's Heels, Jensen Bell, and 7 Deadly 5.
