Kevin Muller is the CEO and co-founder of Passbolt, a security-first, open-source password manager, and he joined me to talk about the risks of having too much time and money, the value of getting trashed on social media and why he values in-person interactions with the team. There were a lot of interesting pieces to pick apart from this episode. First of all, Kevin talked about the importance of not commercializing too early. I think he's the only founder I've ever heard say something along those lines, but he makes a good argument. (Also, Tim Chen and I talked about the timing of commercialization last week, my takeaway is that no one feels like they commercialized at precisely the right moment). Second, we had a good discussion about how the different priorities of European versus American investors can push companies to make different decisions. The subtext that we didn't address directly is make sure you are aware that your investors priorities are going to influence how your company evolves, choose your investors with that in mind. (and check out the episode with Markus Düttmann if you want more on the EU vs US investment environment for open source startups). Lastly, password managers have been in the news, and not in a good way — and how to best react to a super embarrassing situation for a competitor is not always obvious. So we talked about how Passbolt has tried to steer the conversation about password management in light of recent high-profile hacks in the ecosystem. Highlights: Kevin introduces himself and describes his work at Passbolt (00:26) How Kevin got the idea for Passbolt and the story of how he brought his idea to life (01:07) The mistakes that Kevin and his co-founders made when launching Passbolt (05:03) What happened when Kevin and his co-founders officially launched Passbolt in 2016 (08:12) How Kevin and his co-founders decided to move from a purely open-source product to a commercialized product (09:32) Why Passbolt is a hybrid company and the value Kevin sees in having employees spend time in the office (12:41) Kevin describes why it was so important for Passbolt to be an open-source company (15:58) Why Kevin feels it's important not to commercialize an open-source product too quickly (19:07) The different priorities of European VCs versus U.S. VCs (21:58) Why honest feedback is so valuable and how Kevin and his team evaluated the feedback they got at the launch of Passbolt (24:26) Kevin's reaction to data breaches that happen to other password management solutions (27:09) The biggest challenges that Kevin and the team at Passbolt are working on currently (31:09) Kevin's advice to open-source founders (32:47) Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinmuller80/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/passbolt/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/passbolt Company: https://www.passbolt.com

Tim Chen, CEO and founder of NerdWallet, is hoping this will spark other companies to leverage the position credit unions have in local communities – many of which are in low-income and distressed areas hit hard by the pandemic – to pump much needed funding and capital directly into the hands that need it most. I recently spoke with Tim via LinkedIn Live to get a bit more insight into why doing this now is important to NerdWallet, how the employees of the company were a driving forced behind the idea, how working with credit unions is a better fit for this effort than partnering with the big banks, and how helping underserved communities is also benefiting NerdWallet as well.

Today, we’re in conversation with Tim Chen, the founder and CEO of NerdWallet.com, who started the personal finance website out of a personal experience and need. Tim got laid off in the 2008 recession from a job on Wall Street. In that time frame, his sister came to him for some quick financial advice. She wanted to find the best credit card. His parents, around the same time, were seeking his advice for buying a mutual fund. His online search to answer these questions proved unfruitful and frustrating.  And it was then that Tim got inspired to create a well-designed, and unbiased destination for financial advice and products. Tim started Nerdwallet with $800. Today it worth hundreds of millions of dollars and has over 300 employees. What is next for the company, for the world of personal finance products and services and what are some of Tim’s own rules when it comes to managing his own money. It started with a simple Google search to compare credit cards, but when nothing helpful turned up, an idea was born. Tim Chen is the founder and CEO of NerdWallet, a financial advice website with more than 100 million yearly users. While struggling to compare credit cards online, he got the idea for a website with all types of financial advice and products. He told Kai Ryssdal that the idea resonated with millennials because “millennials are just used to comparing things. Even college professors.”

WHOIS, the system used for querying databases of information on domain name registrations and IP addresses, has been a vital tool for journalists, security researchers and law enforcement in identifying and tracking spammers, phishers, identity thieves and other cybercriminals. However, when the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation takes effect on May 25, the service will heavily limited or possibly shut down completely in order to comply with privacy requirements. How will this impact cybersecurity? Does WHOIS raise legitimate privacy concerns?  Shane Tews, President of Logan Circle Strategies, visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and Tim Chen, CEO of DomainTools, join the show to discuss. For more, see Shane’s piece on the subject, Tim’s white papers, and TechFreedom President Berin Szóka’s blog post on ICANN’s IANA transition.

Affordable Financial Advice: Nerdwallet CEO Tim Chen

Tim Chen is the founder and CEO of NerdWallet, and he’s a classic American story. In today’s episode, he describes the remarkable journey he’s taken so far in his still-young life, which has had dramatic ups and downs -- (as he says, when one door closes, a bigger gate may open). NerdWallet, which he founded at age 26, now helps more than 100 million people every year shop for and choose financial products that meet their needs. NerdWallet is a matchmaker, guiding consumers to find the financial products that fit them best, and doing it in a way that automates large swaths of the financial advisory process in order to make advice affordable for people who don’t qualify for a personal wealth manager. Tim says, “Money is so complicated” and he talked with me about how to make it all simpler, especially for people with relatively simple financial profiles. One key is automate the process of learning about their situation and needs, without making that process intrusive or too burdensome to be practical. In our conversation, he talks about how to do this, finding the areas where people’s situations are fairly similar versus those where there’s huge variation. He talks about doing living room visits, and how surprised he’s been by the vast differences among people who look the same if you just consider top-line factors like income. He talks about how much people struggle just to know where they stand, and about being humbled by how little we know. Tim says traditional finance has been opaque, and he wants to change that. Among other things, he wants to break the “entrenched behaviors” around, as he puts it, people basically just taking what they’re given.  As a man who founded a company in his mid-20’s, Tim has ringing advice for other entrepreneurs, including that it really helps to be “delusionally optimistic” about your product. As a startup cofounder myself, I’ve often recalled another bit of advice, on how to set priorities and stay focused on what counts the most. Tim also has interesting thoughts on regulation, and had recently written an op-ed on the future of the CFPB (note that we had this conversation late last year). Finally, he shares his secrets of personal effectiveness, which I suspect you will find surprising.   More for our listeners We have great shows in the queue. They include my talk in Singapore with Michael Wiegand, who heads the Gates Foundation’s work on financial services for the poor. We’ll also talk with the CEO’s of two community banks -- Bob Rivers of Eastern Bank and Mike Butler of Radius bank. I was able to record three wonderful episodes at this year’s LendIt conference in San Francisco. One is with Jim Richards, recorded just a few days after he retired from his role as global head of Anti-Money Laundering for Wells Fargo. Plus I had an far-ranging conversation with my friend Greg Kidd of Global ID. And we’ll have an overview of new research done jointly by LendUp and Experian, on how to improve financial access through credit reporting. We also will have several members of Congress in the coming weeks, which I’m really looking forward to. This episode of Bay Area Ventures features Tim Chen, Co-Founder and CEO of www.nerdwallet.com. Tim is a former investment banker and private equity financer who was simply trying to help his sister find the best credit card. In doing so Tim discovered that it was not as simple as he first thought. Besides the obvious brand names such as Visa, Master Card and American Express, all cards vary in their annual fees, interest rates, sign-up promotions, cardmember services and whether they do or do not offer points or cash back. The list was long and the task was a real challenge. When he was through he posted his results to his friends on social media and the demand was so great that he realized there might be a business opportunity to offer similar information to the public and, not only for credit cards but, for a host of other financial services from life insurance, to travel rewards to mortgages and banking. Tim was not a tech entrepreneur but quickly learned to think like one and a soon decided to move Nerdwallet from his apartment in New York City to San Francisco. He discovered that the ecosystem and human talent of the Bay Area with their propensity for taking on something new to their deep network of like-minded startup veterans, was the ideal place to build and grow his company. In this interview Tim talks about scaling his team and about how they all share knowledge internally and challenge each other to think about solving problems for the organization and their customers. He also talks about the financial industry as a whole drawing from his participation as a member of the Consumer Advisory Board to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal agency set up after the 2008 financial melt-down to protect consumer from banking, mortgage and credit card abuse and fraud.Tim gives some great tips on managing your finances and, more importantly on being a successful entrepreneur.Recorded on February 13, 2017, on SiriusXM Channel 111, Business Radio Powered by the Wharton School.
