The decisions you make that first year could potentially lock you into a plan that you could embrace or regret for the rest of your life. There may also be annual decisions you may need to continue to make, as well. Our guest, Tina Johnson, an Elder Benefit Specialist & State Health Insurance Counselor from the Aging and Disability Resource Center in La Crosse County Wisconsin walks us through the Part A, Part B, Part C and Part D elements of Medicare. We'll discuss original Medicare and Advantage programs, along with a visit about Medicare Supplement policies and more. Stay tune. Your health depends on it.

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, we see disproportionate numbers of Black people becoming infected and dying from the disease. Leaders in the environmental justice community know this disparity all too well, and in June the National Black Environmental Justice Network was relaunched to help communities of color address the inequities that place them in harm’s way. Tina Johnson, director of NBEJN, joins us to talk about those disparities and how the network is fighting for environmental justice. Tina Johnson begins by defining climate justice, which is used in the frame of global warming and ethical and political issues; whereas environmental justice is a term coined by black and brown folks to address environmental racism. Tina contextualizes this (in)justice as occurring not just in the natural environment, but also where we play, eat, work and worship. The intersection between the two types of justice emerges in the fact that we simply cannot have climate justice without environmental justice. Some of the biggest contributors to these injustices include toxic waste facilities, coal fire plants, high-risk chemical plants, oil refineries, and highways. Unfortunately, these plants and highways are all often built in communities that need to be uplifted rather than polluted. Tina also speaks about climate refugees and the importance of relocation projects to create just transitions. Tina closes by reminding listeners that there is no part of climate change that the everyday person can escape, from food extinction to air pollution, and beyond. Juan Declet-Barreto, Ph.D. explains the history of the Union of Concerned Scientists and their incredible roll in assuring science is used to make sound policy decisions. Juan highlights the great need for policy to not only lessen the impact of emission pollution on vulnerable populations but also to track the impacts. Juan is an expert in mapping the vulnerabilities in populations. He maps climate change, extreme heat, and flooding. Juan notes that people of color, low income, and immigrant families are most impacted by climate-related extreme weather, as they live in non-temperature regulated spaces, work in the elements, and do not have access to key resources. In regard to the health impacts of climate change, Juan examines the disparities that have been magnified through the COVID pandemic. He warns, if we return to a pre-COVID state, we will return the vast inequities. Instead, there is a call for change and climate justice. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/healthy-radio/support

The global response to the coronavirus had some unexpected positive outcomes for the environment. Not long after people began sheltering-in-place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, a number of environmental issues that had previously been chalked up to a simple byproduct of human life began clearing up - everything from improved air quality to wildlife reclaiming spaces. So, if removing humans and their creations from the equation means the planet thrives, is that something we can learn from and apply to whatever "new normal" we create once the pandemic is under control? Maria Algarra has organized volunteer cleanups of community spaces in Miami Beach, Florida through her group, Clean This Beach Up (instagram.com/cleanthisbeachup), to cut down on the massive amount of PPE that's now being discarded - things like gloves, masks and other cleaning supplies that are wreaking havoc on animal populations. Leslie Sturges has worked as a bat rehabilitator for 20 years, and campaigns to save them from a disease called White Nose Syndrome (savelucythebat.org). Now, she's helping by keeping bats safe from contracting COVID-19 from humans and ensuring they continue to play their essential role in the ecosystem. Tina Johnson is the director of the National Black Environmental Justice Network (nbejn.com), and is focused on how the coronavirus has disproportionately impacted communities of color, along with a host of other factors influenced by environmental racism. She's dedicated to ensuring a fair, just and equitable environment for the human population moving forward as well. Humanity changing its habits to save the planet may be easier said than done, but with helpers like Maria, Leslie and Tina, we can be hopeful for a future where we are no longer a detriment to our environment.
