Wendy Williams is well versed in sparking outrage from fans with her scathing insults and put-downs, the most recent being her blasts of actress Tabitha Brown's marriage. Likening Brown's life to her's with ex-husband Kevin Hunter, she told the audience, “I was married to one of those, ‘I make the money!' and so on and so forth. ‘Go live your dreams! Open a business! Go, go, go!' See how that turned out…I predict that this marriage is going to be on real rocky ground in a moment. ‘Live your dream'…They may invest in stuff and lose the money. Today Charles talks with Professional Counselor, Divorce Mediator, motivational speaker, and the founder of Project Compassion, NFP Rachel Jackson about her take on Wendy's backhanded slight towards Tabitha and her husband Chance. Rachel has worked with countless women to help them steer clear of toxic relationships and navigate changing gender and spousal roles to maintain their marriages. How much should we tithe? What’s the Bible really say about tithing? Is tithing just an old testament thing? Should you tithe if you’re in debt? Is tithing the same thing as giving? Should you tithe on your gross, net, or does it even matter? Today Charles is going to share a little of the message that he shares with his congregation regarding tithing, which may be a little different than you’ve heard before. Hi friends and welcome back to the Balanced Pursuits Podcast. This week’s episode is with Charles Post & it’s one of our favorite episodes to date!Charles is an Ecologist. He spent nearly a decade earning his master’s degree from UC Berkeley. Charles cares a great deal about the environment, animals, food webs, and the conservation & balance of all of these. Early in his career, he realized that one of the biggest challenges he’d face was not the science itself, but finding a way to use the science to make a difference. With that in mind, Charles set upon writing stories for publications like national geographic, producing films, and building a social media presence that both educates and invites interaction.Charles believes in being consistent, admitting when you don’t know everything, and offering transparency in the sharing process. More than anything, he understands that it takes a combination of all of these to cultivate trust. Charles explains that “so often today, people want simplified stories, but science operates in context, complexity, and nuance… If we want more people to advocate for the causes we believe in, we’re going to need more people to understand them.”Wise well beyond his years.Today Charles is going to tell us all about the moments that he believes punctuate life and what he’s learned about humanity by studying animals. We’re going to ask him about his studies, his passions, and the causes he believes in. And he’ll share what he’s doing to make a difference in the world and what we can do as well.In This Episode We Discuss:Why we want to believe simplified narratives when it comes to complicated issues. The importance of understanding different perspectives and preconceived notions. How customizing stories can help change minds. Why we care more about charismatic species and the importance of those we often overlook. The daily anxieties of environmental education.Google scholar and the importance of sourcing highly cited information. How thinking of each of your purchases as a vote can help make the world a better place. How to cultivate trust. What it takes to become an authority in your field. Why people are so much more complicated than animals.Resources:Follow Charles on InstagramCheck out Charles’ work with youth through The Nature Project on Instagram or the webResearch something you’re curious about with Google Scholar

In this episode Charles breaks his silence on the passing of Kobe Bryant to send a hard, remindful message to all. We know the untimely death of Kobe, his daughter Gigi and their colleagues rocked much of the world and people are still very distraught over it. In fact, Charles also speaks about considering anti-depressants to help snap out of the fog and he knows many people who've had similar thoughts and feelings. Today Charles reminds us about what so many religious texts and spiritual paths know to be true: death is always near and that most of us aren't prepared for it and while we can never truly prepare for it, we can use this tragedy and others like it, to make some changes for our loved ones. Today Charles speaks with a good colleague, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale-based couples and sex therapist Paola Rodriguez. Paola is the owner/operator of Life Discovery Psych services. Paola focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy, couples counseling, group therapy and handles countless requests for workshops focusing on sex, intimacy and reigniting passion in relationships battered by today's expectations. A fan and avid Valentine's Day reveler, Paola believes many people and couples either become Valentine's Day scrooges due to stress, anxiety and the demands of life or have had negative experiences that create barriers to appreciating the special day of love. But that isn't her only focus. Though many people make New Year's resolutions (some good, some bad) we don't really consider making Valentine's Day resolutions for ourselves and our partners. Paola gives us a bit of insight into getting started. If you've been in a longer-term relationship but never heard of "the secret garden" this is definitely a show you don't want to miss! Today Charles talks with Sister Alia Salem, Founder and Executive Director of F.A.C.E (Facing Abuse in Community Environments) about the much needed work to highlight issues of abuse in religious environments and hold leaders accountable for immoral and predatory behaviors. In many churches, mosques and synagogues around the country, faithful practitioners look to their trusted spiritual guides for spiritual, financial, professional and moral guidance among other things. But what happens when those looking for help fall prey to leaders bent on satisfying their own personal, wordly agendas? Who holds them accountable? Where can people turn for help? Why is the problem so widespread? Just who are these victims of religious abuse and what might it look like in your own religious community? *Please support our media and advocacy outreach by making a donation on our Patreon page.* Today Charles sits down to speak with photographer, Dj, producer, mental health worker, and queer activist Jamon Kimbrough about subtle forms of racism directed at queer men of color (even how men of color perpetuate continued racism among themselves) in fashion, design and media fields. We first came across Jamon after receiving this article. Hailing from Minnesota, Jamon recently launched a website that solely features the stories of black gay men and other gay/queer people of color. The goal is to feature voices rarely heard with such openness and vulnerability. Jamon uses his platform to showcase photography, music, podcasts, fiction, and nonfiction stories as well as short films. The content is robust, uncensored, and unflinchingly tells hard truths about what it means to be black and gay, or trans, or nonbinary, or a straight man who loves trans women, which can be confusing for those who aren't up on current gender norms. He says mainstream media is still wary of showcasing Gay Black men and men of color, arguing that there is a social chain of hierarchy even among gay men, with Black men sitting at the bottom. Jamon also retells the story of coming out to his father and discusses the current state of his relationship with his dad. He is an avid and vocal supporter of queer people and works with disenfranchised young men in need of mental healthcare. He sets the record straight on the fears of straight guys and adds to our discussion of men and mental health as a queer person seeking out a therapist for himself. Let us know what you think. *Please help us reach more men and those who love them by making a financial contribution on our Patreon page.* Today Charles speaks with Ontario-based counselor Melanie Tsesler; a speaker, mindfulness meditation teacher, individual and couples counselor and the founder of Mindful Beginnings. Known for her down-to-earth, engaging and kind-hearted demeanor, Melanie specializes in relationships of all kinds. What is mindfulness? We're hearing the word a lot these days. Through practicing mindfulness -- or being able to stay in the moment without judgment -- the mind develops strength of attention and the power of focus. By loosening one's mental hold on a constructed ideal and becoming curious rather than controlling, a person actually has the chance to "wake up," or become enlightened. Simply put, mindfulness is to be aware. It's the reminder we need to come back into this present moment. Melanie says its "natural that our minds wander to either a moment that has already passed, or we focus on something yet to happen in the future. Mindfulness and relationships go hand in hand. Developing the awareness of where our relationships are, and where we would like them to be gives us the ability to move to the next step-and to heal. It's important to learn how wrong they are. Here are several myths surrounding male sexual abuse that many of us, victims and non-victims, have absorbed in our thinking: Men and boys can't be sexually used or abused, and if you have been, you're not or won't be a “real man.” If you experienced sexual arousal during abuse, you must have wanted and/or enjoyed it, and if you ever partly wanted the sexual experiences, then it was your fault. Sexual abuse is less harmful to boys and men than it is to girls and women. Most men who sexually abuse boys are gay. Boys and men who were abused by males must have attracted the abuse because they are gay or they become gay as a result. If a female used or abused a boy, he was “lucky,” and if he doesn't feel that way there's something wrong with him. The myth that boys who are sexually abused will go on to abuse others. For any man harmed by unwanted or abusive sexual experiences – and anyone who wants to support him – becoming free of these myths is necessary to overcoming the effects of the abuse, and to achieving the life he wants and deserves. Researchers have found that at least 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual abuse or assault, whether in childhood or as adults. And this is probably a low estimate since it doesn't include noncontact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. If you've had such an experience, or think you might have, you are not alone. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebarbershopgroup/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebarbershopgroup/support
Today Charles and Dave are discussing deviating from the Rails core. Dave doesn’t care for JavaScript frameworks or microservices as he believes that they add too much complexity. These things may become necessary when your project gets massive, but otherwise we shouldn’t jump to these as a first option. If you don’t need the frontend powerhouse features, you may want to see how far you can get with Rails and a minimal frontend. React may not always be the solution that you need. They discuss jQuery versus Stimulus. They both prefer jQuery over Stimulus as they find it less invasive and clunky, and it’s easier to drop things in. Dave talks about his experience with ElasticSearch and how he simplified it. They discuss using MongoDB and Mongoid. They agree that although these are not Ruby specific, they can help. Dave, however, has not found a need for them, while Charles has found that it gave him more advantages in his schema. He talks about some other advantages of MongoDB. Dave and Charles discuss the default testing library for Rails, MiniTest. Dave prefers RSpec, but he still uses Mini test because it’s included in the rails core. He has found that RSpec benefits him, while Mini Test benefits his application, so he sticks to what’s included. He believes that sticking close to the core and counting on the widely used things keeping up to speed makes maintaining on the application easier, and things are less likely to break. They turn to discussing when it is appropriate to deviate. Again, Dave believes that small applications without a massive amount of traffic don’t need to deviate, but adds that unique situations require unique solutions. It’s important to Consider if the solution will box you into an infrastructure provider or long term maintenance on something you don’t usnderstand. They agree that the goal is to introduce the least amount of technical debt as possible. Most people want more sex. Well most guys do anyway. But most men don't realize that we can't keep relying on the old 1-2 punch we used as teens and younger adults to keep hitting home runs when it comes to sexual intimacy. Today Charles talks about some things you might be open to trying IF you want to get laid more. Consider these pointers something like cliff notes. Use what works, discard what doesn't. But before you throw them all away, consider talking to your partner about what she desires and wants before you end up using a foo foo or a blow-up doll for the rest of your life. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebarbershopgroup/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebarbershopgroup/support
Episode Summary Dominik Kundel works as developer evangelist at Twilio. Dominik talks about the history of Twilio, which actually started with integrating phone calls into apps and then moved to SMS integration. Today Charles and Dominik are talking about how the SMS message approach can augment your user experience. Since many people are not familiar with implementing SMS, Dominik talks about how Twilio can help. Twilio created was a supernetwork where they work with carriers and gateways around the world to ensure that they provide reliable services. They also focus heavily on making sure that the developer experience is great. Uber and Lyft are two of the companies that use Twilio, and Dominik shares some of the interesting things that they’ve accomplished. He is particularly excited about phone number masking to support privacy. Uber and Lyft use phone number masking so that your driver doesn’t see your real number and you don’t see theirs. Instead, each of you sees a Twilio number. This use case is becoming more common. Twilio recently introduced Flex, which Dominik explains is their contact center solution. Flex is designed to keep with their philosophy of everything should be programmable and configurable, and take it on to a software shipment. This is their first time shipping software instead of just APIs. Flex is highly customizable and flexible, allows you to build React plugins that let you change anything you want. Charles asks Dominik about some of the gotchas in telephony. One major issues is spam calls, which Twilio is trying to work with some providers on a ‘verified by Twilio’ list. This list lets companies get verified, and they’re working on ways to let you know the reason why they’re calling without having to answer your phone. This can be difficult because each country has different regulations. Dominik talks about what it would take for someone who wanted to build an SMS gateway themselves. They would have to work with carriers and learn SMS protocols. It’s important to note that SMS and phone calls have different protocols Dominik talks about some of the unique use cases they’ve seen their system. Some examples are contextual communications, account verifications, and codex creation. There are other fun examples, such as a drone controlled via text message, a fake boyfriend app, and a dog that was taught to take selfies that are sent to his owner. Charles asks about ways to get started with Twilio. If you want to explore this and don’t know where to get started, try Twilio Quest, a game to teach you how to use Twilio. There is also documentation, which is good if you know exactly what you want to achieve, or if you just want to explore possibilities then download Twilio Quest. They delve into a more specific use case for Twilio to send text to subscibers of DevChatTV. Dominik talks about ways of dealing with sending notifications to people outside of the US. You can send with a US number to any country code, or you can personalize it, so that people in the UK receive it from a UK number and so on through automatic geocode matching. They talk about Twilio’s billing. Finally, they talk about security within telephony in light of recent hacks. They discuss the security of two factor authentication. Two factor authentication and security, especially in light of recent hacks. Dominik talks about the API called Authy, where you can implement different ways of doing two factor authentication, such as push notifications, time based one time password, sms, and phone calls. For most people in the world two factor authentication is very safe, unless you’re a very important person, then you’re more at risk for targeted attacks. They conclude by talking about Twilio’s acquisition of Sendgrid.
