They will discuss the origins of TerraCycle, its partnership with Keep America Beautiful's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, the TerraCycle Global Foundation, and their aspirations for the future.
Tom Szaky runs a recycling company, but he'd rather live in a world where recycling was obsolete... Today, his company recycles everything from shampoo bottles and makeup containers to snack wrappers and cigarette butts. And through their recent Loop initiative, TerraCycle works with consumer brands to develop packaging that is actually reusable -- an even more effective waste-reduction tactic than recyclable packaging. This week on How I Built This Lab, Tom recounts his entrepreneurial journey launching a worm poop fertilizer company from his college dorm room, then transforming that company into a multimillion dollar recycling business. Also, why Tom's ultimate goal is to put himself out of business, and how our actual path to eliminating waste is radically reducing consumption. This episode was produced by J.C. INTRODUCTION Are you wondering how to couple a sustainable packaging design with a memorable user experience? With Evelio Mattos, a well-recognized structural designer, you will have a good overview of the ins and outs of packaging concept development. We navigated the conversation from very visible branding to behind the scene systems. Yes, huge ripple effects can happen through packaging in the spotlight (with big brands and the luxury industry), as well as through the tremendous impact of tertiary packaging! I liked how Evelio brought packaging design to highlight how much packaging impact happens before, during, and after the product gets to consumers! Of course, you will hear a lot of examples from Evelio's experience but from his interviewees too because Evelio Mattos is also the host of the Packaging Unboxd podcast. I encourage you to unbox even more packaging designs by following him. Katie Tyson Higdon is a co-founder of Hive Brands, the first online marketplace dedicated to helping people shop their values. Hive Brands sells household goods, groceries, and beauty products that are high quality, good for people, and good for the planet. Katie is an innovative and strategic marketer with a deep passion for mission-driven brands. She spent 11 years working at start-ups (Casper, Shine), small-to-IPO stage businesses (Freshpet), and agencies (VaynerMedia, Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann). In this episode we discuss: Why Hive Brands created the Hive Five, their internal vetting system, instead of using a third-party certification One metric we should all pay more attention to 3 lessons for companies just starting their ESG journey Key Takeaways: When it comes to building a personal community, people talk a lot about “finding their people”. This means finding people with aligned values and interests, and ideally, people who care enough to help you become the best version of yourself. What I find interesting about Hive Brands, is that they have become a connection point (or a hive). Their existence and growth demonstrate the magic that happens when you connect people and companies through a shared purpose and aligned values. The Hive Brands stakeholder approach struck me as a best-in-class example. The way they interact with their stakeholders appears to have an integrated collaborative advantage, in which they are continuously improving their processes and Hive Five criteria in partnership with the brands they sell, and with the consumers they sell to. Each stakeholder is committed to making the system better. The importance of transparency as we try to create better ways of doing things. Perfect isn't possible, but progress is necessary. Transparency not only builds trust, but it can also accelerate change. For example, by transparently sharing hurdles—like packaging issues—you bring visibility to a problem waiting to be solved. This visibility can act as an invitation to another company that might be able to innovate a better solution for the entire system. Tom Szaky '05 says everything we own eventually comes to the end of its lifespan, whether it's a shirt you've worn for years or the cup from a coffee you bought this morning. Where does it all go? How much actually gets recycled? And with evidence mounting that all this waste is damaging our world, how can we throw on the brakes? Over the 20 years since he was a Princeton undergrad, Szaky has become an entrepreneur in the recycling world with his Trenton-based company TerraCycle, and a vocal advocate urging us to do better. He's written multiple books, including Outsmart Waste, The Future of Packaging, and Make Garbage Great, and on the PAWcast he talked about whether we can get a grip on our out-of-control consumption — before the waste we produce consumes us.
“Steve Adubato is joined by a panel of business innovators to discuss what it means to be a social entrepreneur, the need for more people to work, live, and pay taxes in the city of Trenton, and how implementing hub zones can drastically improve small, local business. Panelists include:Eleanor Kubacki, Co-Founder & CEO, EFK GroupElijah […]
TerraCycle Founder & CEO Tom Szaky shares the misconceptions around recycling, how he started innovative recycling company TerraCycle, and what lead to the creation of the Loop platform. For Tom, entrepreneurship was a passion from the beginning and he was committed to creating a business that sits at the intersection of profit and purpose. In the episode, Aaron and Tom discuss the anomalies in the recycling industry, the major turning point for TerraCycle, and how the company turns non-recyclable pre-consumer and post-consumer waste into raw materials that can be used in new products. Tom Szaky, founder of TerraCycle, tells us how the Loop reusable packaging platform is bringing the convenience of prefill to high streets everywhere. TerraCycle and Loop are tackling the root causes of waste, including single use and disposable items. We hear why they chose prefill, and why reuse needs to ‘feel disposable'. Tom explains how they are helping big brands and retailers to make the business case, feel confident about moving forward, and scale up from pilots to in-store roll-outs.
Tom Szaky is founder and CEO of TerraCycle, a global leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams. TerraCycle operates in 21 countries, working with some of the world's largest brands, retailers and manufacturers. In 2019, TerraCycle launched Loop, billed as the “21st century milkman”. Loop partners with producers on a reusable packaging loop system replacing single-use waste. Loop is available in France, the UK, Canada, Japan, and is rolling out select operations throughout the 48 contiguous United States.. Tom is also the author of four books, Revolution in a Bottle (2009), Outsmart Waste (2014), Make Garbage Great (2015) and The Future of Packaging (2019). Call to action Be mindful when you're shopping. The only silver bullet in sustainability is to stop consuming, but if you need to buy something, look for the highest quality brand that will last the longest. Look for products that come in reusable containers, and if reusable isn't an option make sure that the packaging is recyclable. Remember, our dollars are votes. In this episode we discuss: Why “rolling down hill” is the path to creating change within current business models What the creation of a TV show and successful business partnerships have in common The most impactful thing each of us can do to support a sustainable world Key Takeaways: One theme that struck me in this conversation was the innovation power that can be unlocked by going back to the origin of a problem and reframing the way we look at it. For example, to understand the limitations of sustainability work, Tom went back and analyzed how and why our global waste problem started in the 1950's. The power of empathy to create change. Tom's empathetic approach to business is powerful and refreshing. He understands that the way to create scalable change fast is to work with the largest companies out there—not to work against them. I loved his comment to their sales team, that if a company's reason for signing on with TerraCycle is that “it's the right thing to do”, the salesperson hasn't dug deep enough to show why this decision is actually good for business. Aligning objectives creates sticky and lasting change. I appreciate TerraCycle identifying where the needs and gaps are to the waste problem, and creating solutions to fix those—from developing ways to recycle just about everything, to building a cross-company system for reuse packaging. TerraCycle isn't trying to replace current retailers or manufacturers, but instead, they are building backend waste solutions that support other companies. There are so many myths out there in terms of what is recyclable, what's not recyclable, what kind of material you should use, what material you shouldn't use, where you should use them, and how to use them. Today, we're sharing with you a presentation that Evelio gave at the Lithuanian Baltic NAPA Design Conference that focuses on the myths around the sustainability and recycling of packaging. Tuning in you'll discover a list of things that you can do when you're designing sustainable packaging to ensure that it is, in fact, sustainable. You'll hear the story about the launch of a new product for a luxury brand and what Evelio learned from their refusal to use packaging that was as recyclable as it claimed to be. Evelio then breaks down a list of myths and commonly held misperceptions about sustainable packaging as well as practical steps to take in the future. To find out where you can get the right information, what questions you should ask of whom, and what actionable steps you can take to create truly sustainable packaging, tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: An introduction to our host Evelio Mattos and his career in package design. A quote from Tom Szaky on what defines sustainable packaging. The story about the launch of a new luxury product and what Evelio learned from the brand's refusal to use recyclable packaging. How not asking the right questions of the right people results in inaccurate myths. Why it's so important to call the separating companies and find out what they can separate. The first myth Evelio debunks: Packaging is a keepsake. Myth two: Recycling is circular. Myth three: Plastic is good. Myth four: Plastic is bad. Myth five: Reusable packaging is the answer. Myth six: Size doesn't matter. The main takeaway from this talk: Don't trust the data that you're given by suppliers. Who you can trust: The recycling center in your region. Evelio's answer to the question ‘“What is the most sustainable packaging?” How to go about sourcing the most sustainable material for packaging. How moving products independently creates waste. Waste management isn't the most glamorous field. But Tom Szaky, the founder of TerraCycle, a company that works with other companies and governments to recycle what has been typically un-recyclable, saw opportunity in it.“There's such an opportunity to innovate around the topic of waste,” Tom says. “It has been a very uninnovative category because it is, quite literally, shitty, nasty and gross.”One of Tom's niches that he didn't see other entrepreneurs chomping at the bit to fill? Diaper recycling. When TerraCycle figured out how to recycle diapers — which make up a sizable chunk of non-biodegradable waste — a decade ago, it struggled with getting diaper companies on board. Companies knew it would be beneficial to the environment if their products were sustainable, but they often weren't willing to shell out the money to make it happen.TerraCycle turned that hesitancy into a marketing opportunity. “Everyone would prefer not to buy diapers. But while your kids are in diapers, you might choose Brand A over Brand B,” Tom says on this episode of The Empowered Challenger. “So, if Brand A is doing what it can to be sustainable and incentivizing recycling, that gives them a leg up. We framed the entire approach to diaper recycling as something that can drive market share.”TerraCycle's challenge isn't having to rise above its competitors: it's getting people to care about sustainability, and brands to realize the potential market value of embracing the environmentally conscious future. In doing so, not only is the company challenging companies to rethink their marketing strategies around sustainability, but it's changing the game of entrepreneurship entirely.Featured Challenger

Sure, healthcare and pharma does a whole lot of good in the world - but this doesn't make us exempt from taking our plastic waste seriously. So join Conor and Dodi as they talk about the 5 R's with their guests: Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO at TerraCycle; Cristina Peixoto, Head of Lab at iBET (Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnologica, Portugal) and Joëlle Cristofani from Cytiva.
In this episode, I am talking with Anthony Rossi, EVP of Business Development of TerraCycle and Loop. If you’re not familiar with TerraCycle, I’ll make it simple, they are the biggest innovators in the garbage business. TerraCycle reuses, upcycles, and recycles waste instead of landfilling it. Through their National recycling programs, TerraCycle has diverted millions of pounds of valuable resources from landfills all over the world. From diapers and cigarette buts to energy bar wrappers and contact lenses. Today, Tony and I are talking about the history of TerraCycle, about the Loop shop and also about the work of the TerraCycle Global Foundation whose mission is to help to reduce plastic pollution in emerging countries and communities. This conversation will leave you looking at trash and recycling in a whole new way. About Tony Anthony has been with TerraCycle since 2012 when he joined the TerraCycle Canada team in Toronto as a Business Development Manager. Since then, he has worked with TerraCycle and Loop partners in both the B2C and B2B space and has brought in many new international partners. As the EVP, Business Development for both TerraCycle and Loop, Anthony develops the company-wide sales strategy and manages TerraCycle Inc.’s 50+ person global sales. Anthony has 15+ years of business development experience and prior to joining TerraCycle he worked in Toronto, Dijon, Budapest, and Vienna for some of the world’s largest professional service firms and financial institutions. The idea that a brand trying to save money on packaging design is going to create a folding carton that consumers will actually use to decorate their home is ridiculous. Reusable packaging systems like Tom Szaky's Loop is different it actually gets reused. Creating packaging for CPGs that is a throwaway item and market it as reusable, is less helpful than clearly stating to the consumer how to properly recycle the packaging. Keep recycling easy, don't complicate it. It's complicated enough. Let me know what you think. The saying ‘One person's garbage is another person's treasure.' has never been more true than now. Now, imagine a world without the idea of waste? What if all ‘garbage' could actually be valuable to someone. Really...did you ever think you'd see a time when chewing gum, cigarette butts or dirty diapers might have a second chance at life? Enter TerraCycle, Loop and all their ingenious partners. In this episode, Anthony Rossi, EVP, Business Development at TerraCycle, describes the truth about our waste problem and the economic drivers that dictate what and how material is recycled or repurposed. Anthony also shares many of the myths and mistakes made by all of us that contribute to and perpetuate the problem as well as the incredibly innovative efforts made by many forward-thinking leaders around the world who are working to give waste new life. Basically, this episode presents a way to revamp how we view ‘waste' and what we see as valuable in our ‘garbage' so that we can reduce (or eliminate) what ends up in landfills. The responsibility is on industry, businesses and consumers to help with that process, and Anthony shares many tips on how, working together, we can most certainly see the extinction of waste. Recycling used to just be called "scrap metal salvage" and it was thought of as an unsavory practice. That all changed as recently as the 1970s, when it became the curb side amenity it is today and part of a multi-billion-dollar industry. Now, the question isn't can we recycle, but can we recycle everything? Innovators in the field are trying to find out. Find out more about these innovators like Carl Zimring, Tom Szaky, Martin Bourque, Jim Puckett, Peter Christensen and Veena Sahajwalla on an all-new episode of Trailblazers. It's the overview week for this month's podcast topic: Sustainable Packaging! In this week's episode, we talk about what we've learned over the past month. Starting at 49:30 you will find our 10 suggestions for helping you choose your brand's packaging. This month: - We talked about sustainable packaging as an issue and what questions we have around it - Read and gave our book review: "The Future of Packaging," by Tom Szaky, founder of Terracycle - Changemaker Chat with Greg Barber of Eco Friendly Printer Here are some things we learned: - how to choose sustainable packaging for your brand? (talk to your local MRFs to find out what's in demand to be recycled, start with a list of what you want before researching the supplier, and then demand sustainability in your supply chain) - what solutions are actually helpful and what should you avoid in your packaging right now? (bioplastic and decomposable plastics aren't real solutions right now, find infrastructures that will be able to help your customers) #environmentalpodcast #sustainablepackaging #sustainability
Let's start with the basics: do we recommend this book? That's a big YES! It's not really a book for beginners, and we certainly felt like last month's focus on recycling gave us the language and knowledge to talk about packaging issues. The Future of Packaging offers a different way to look at the issues around the packaging industry and the importance of working within the current recycling infrastructure. Packaging, recycling, and circular thinking all go hand in hand - if we want our circular system to work better, we need to put time and energy into improving our systems of production and waste management. This book offers some great, realistic solutions to the packaging waste problems our planet is experiencing. Who should read this? - Any brand that is focused on making sustainable packaging choices - Any person dedicated to sustainability efforts - Sustainable Problem Solvers - Anyone that wants to know where we came from and where we are going in the packaging industry

In today's podcast we speak to one of the most prominent leaders in the Ecopreneur space, Tom Szaky. Tom is the founder of Terracycle, a company making products from waste and coordinating recycling efforts for hard to recycle materials. More recently Tom helped coordinate one of the most ground breaking zero waste services known as Loop. Loop has received both glowing reviews as well as some push back from the eco-activist community. Find out more about Loop and how Tom feels about the criticism in this episode. In an effort to close the loop on packaging use, a number of global packaged goods companies have announced Loop, a scheme to offer products in returnable and reusable packaging. The partnership has been announced at the World Economic Forum by Tom Szaky, CEO at Terracycle, which is coordinating the program. Tom gives an inside look at how Loop will operate.
Eliminating the Idea of Waste - A conversation with Tom Szaky, CEO & Founder of TerraCycle "Why does waste even exist?" That's the question at the heart of TerraCycle's own existence. Since 2001, the company has been taking hard-to-recycle waste and turning it into raw material for use in new products. It operates in over 20 countries and engages over 60 million people. 2017 marked a period of significant growth for the relentlessly innovative company. TerraCycle had its first acquisition, placing it on the path to going public. It's leveraging the JOBS Act to crowdsource for equity. And it's partnering with major organizations such as Proctor & Gamble (P&G), Mars, Nestlé and Unilever to generate ultra-durable packaging forms that'll be owned by the manufacturer and merely loaned to the consumer. In December 2017, Bard MBA's Alistair Hall spoke with Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle, about the company's plans for growth and all the ways in which it continues to work toward eliminating the idea of waste in our world. impactreportpodcast.com
Sustainable Business Fridays: Recycling the Unrecycleable with TerraCycle Alistair Hall from Bard's MBA in Sustainability spoke with Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, to dig into this question, ‘why does garbage really exist?' What is garbage? It's a question that Szaky has been working to solve. Szaky and Terracycle start from the premise that everything can be recycled. Glass, metal, plastic are all recycled because there's a straightforward business case to do so, but how about cigarette butts, paint, diapers, and more? Terracycle's imaginative approach and drive has taken them to 20 different countries, three seasons of a hit reality TV show, “Human Resources,” and the title of “The Coolest Little Start Up in America” by Inc. Magazine (to name just one of their many accolades). The following Q&A is an edited excerpt from a Sustainable Business Fridays (SBF) podcast. SBF brings together students in Bard's MBA in Sustainability with leaders in business, sustainability and social entrepreneurship. You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Podbean.
