Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin' Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we begin by discussing Jeff McNeil's contract extension. We then discuss allegations of abuse against Khalil Lee by his ex-girlfriend. Lee was recently designated for assignment and the Mets picked up Sam Coonrod off waivers, who has some issues of his own. We also talk about Carlos Beltrán joining the Mets' front office and Steve Cohen taking the other MLB owners to task in his interview with Jeff Passan of ESPN. Speaking of other MLB owners, we begin our baseball segment this week with a hearty chuckle at Rockies owner Dick Monfort's latest comments. We also talk about this piece from Daniel Epstein of Baseball Prospectus about regional sports networks going bankrupt and how Sinclair's stock buybacks negatively impact the fan experience. We also remind folks who are potentially concerned by the number of Mets playing in the World Baseball Classic of previous research done at The Ringer that reveals that there is not much evidence to support the idea that the World Baseball Classic leads to more injuries. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what's making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. In this episode, The Mentors Radio Host Tom Loarie talks with Daniel K. Epstein, author of the inspiring book and project Portraits in Faith and a world-renown behavioral marketing expert. Epstein was among the elite at Proctor & Gamble where he served as a distinguished Harley Proctor Marketer, an honor awarded to very few. On the outside and to his colleagues and friends, Epstein seemed to have the world at his feet, but inside he was unhappy. Very unhappy. For him, life had become a zero sum game in which he was constantly driven by a fear of not having enough. Ever the ultimate practical professional, he spent much of his life trying "fit into a mold" made by others. If he was told "No, you can't," he made it his mission to prove "Yes, I can," and he would succeed. Epstein seemed to have a gift for seeing life through another person's point of view, a useful perception in top-level marketing, but he did not appreciate the depth of his gift. For him, it was just a practical marketing expertise. He also exhibited clear behaviors of a leader, but his focus was self-serving, having more, driven by fear. Then, Daniel Epstein hit a turning point—a radical turning point. Actually, the SHTF. Pretty badly. He didn't want to be who he was, He didn't know how to change. His world turned upside down. But at the same time, in his struggles, he began to discover what life and living was really about. He learned the hard way what it meant to lead. He eventually transformed into fully living a life of gratitude and service, and he beautifully captured what he learned in his book, Portraits in Faith. This is not a book about religion. It is, rather, a documenting of the spiritual experience as it manifests itself in individual's lives, the radical transformation of mindset, understanding and appreciation of what they never saw before. The book Portraits in Faith weaves together individual vignettes and stunning portrait photographs. In the words of one of Epstein's mentors along his journey, famed film story-teller Ken Burns, "I was--we were (as several folks in the office crowded 'round) -- completely blown away by its power and dignity, its implicit compassion and yet unblinking eye. What a wonderful project and I only wish I hadn't been on the road for the last three and a half months because I would have been able to see this amazing project sooner." SHOW NOTES: DANIEL K. There is more that unites us than what separates us. This is something that most researchers who take time to listen to people from different cultures, religions, and backgrounds end up concluding. To bring more unity and understanding, we need materials that expose us to other people's beliefs and concerns.Today, I'm joined by Daniel Epstein, a marketing and innovation consultant. Previously, Daniel was a Harley Procter Marketing Director at Procter & Gamble, where he was employed for 21 years. He is the author of the new book, Portraits of Faith. A book documenting the role of spiritual experience inside and outside of formal religion, expected and unexpected, told in people's own words and brought to life with video and photography. In this episode, he'll share with us how a past experience inspired him to make big life changes. He'll also share with us some of the lessons he learnt while interviewing people about their faith. Additionally, he'll share with us what his greatest fear is and where he sees himself in the near future.Tune in to episode 37 of The Brand Therapist and hear more about Daniel's branding and photography journey. Ken Banks is the Head of Social Purpose at the digital identity startup Yoti. The Yoti app was on mobile technology in Africa. Built with security and privacy as a priority, ensuring a safer way for people to prove who they are, both online and off. The company believes in using tech for good, and is a certified B Corp. Ken is an award-winning founder, technologist, anthropologist, and author committed to supporting positive social and environmental change around the world. Before joining Yoti he worked for more than two decades in global conservation and development, with a particular focus Ken has had the honor of working with eminent leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, taken part in expeditions for National Geographic, and joined delegations to Africa with British Prime Minister David Cameron. In this episode we discuss: What an encrypted ID is, and why it's useful The importance of simplicity in creating a user experience The intersection of technology and social impact Key Takeaways: I appreciate learning about how Yoti has been built. A company focused on identity protection, built on the principles of security and privacy, that can't even access information on their users. Building their platform that way is leading by example, with the best interest of the customer front and center as opposed to the best interest of the company. The world is full of great ideas. What's far less common are people who act on those ideas. In the book Big Magic, author Liz Gilbert writes that ideas are life-forms existing alongside all other life on Earth, They wish to become manifest, which they can only achieve through collaboration with a human partner. So ideas visit us, wave for attention, wake us in the middle of the night, and distract us during the day. Finally, in a moment of quiet, the idea will ask “Do you want to work with me?” Most people say no, and the idea moves on to find someone else that is willing to bring the idea to life. But for those who say yes, “you officially entered into a contract with inspiration, and you must try to see it through, all the way to its impossible-to-predict outcome.” I was reminded of this theory as Ken shared his story of creating Frontline SMS. He had an idea. He said yes. Then he spent a few weeks working on a kitchen table to code the idea into life. Because he said yes. Because he acted, Ken created a technology that benefited tens of millions of people across 190 countries. Ask yourself, what idea is trying to get your attention? And are you brave enough to say yes? Ken's journey is a beautiful example of what can happen if you're brave enough to follow the path of curiosity into the unknown. Maybe curiosity is our sixth sense, excitedly leaving breadcrumbs to lead us down the life path each one of us was meant to walk. From Ken's humble upbringing, he went on to travel the African continent, use technology to impact lives, surviving a pirate attack and close encounters with lions along the way. Ken shares his unlikely journey in his book, The Pursuit of Purpose: Part Memoir, Part Study - A Book About Finding Your Way in the World. If you're interested in learning more about where the path of curiosity led Ken, I encourage you to read it. Katie Tyson Higdon is a co-founder of Hive Brands, the first online marketplace dedicated to helping people shop their values. Hive Brands sells household goods, groceries, and beauty products that are high quality, good for people, and good for the planet. Katie is an innovative and strategic marketer with a deep passion for mission-driven brands. She spent 11 years working at start-ups (Casper, Shine), small-to-IPO stage businesses (Freshpet), and agencies (VaynerMedia, Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann). In this episode we discuss: Why Hive Brands created the Hive Five, their internal vetting system, instead of using a third-party certification One metric we should all pay more attention to 3 lessons for companies just starting their ESG journey Key Takeaways: When it comes to building a personal community, people talk a lot about “finding their people”. This means finding people with aligned values and interests, and ideally, people who care enough to help you become the best version of yourself. What I find interesting about Hive Brands, is that they have become a connection point (or a hive). Their existence and growth demonstrate the magic that happens when you connect people and companies through a shared purpose and aligned values. The Hive Brands stakeholder approach struck me as a best-in-class example. The way they interact with their stakeholders appears to have an integrated collaborative advantage, in which they are continuously improving their processes and Hive Five criteria in partnership with the brands they sell, and with the consumers they sell to. Each stakeholder is committed to making the system better. The importance of transparency as we try to create better ways of doing things. Perfect isn't possible, but progress is necessary. Transparency not only builds trust, but it can also accelerate change. For example, by transparently sharing hurdles—like packaging issues—you bring visibility to a problem waiting to be solved. This visibility can act as an invitation to another company that might be able to innovate a better solution for the entire system. The Lead With We podcast is produced by Goal 17 Media. Daniel Epstein Named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders, Daniel's life has been shaped by a fundamental belief that entrepreneurship is the answer to nearly all the issues we face today. This unfettered belief in entrepreneurs led Daniel to found and become CEO of Unreasonable. Unreasonable is dedicated to supporting growth-equity entrepreneurs positioned to bend history in the right direction. Part investment firm, part media house, and most importantly a global community, Unreasonable partners with multinational institutions and revered brands to align them with impactful growth-stage entrepreneurs. Today Unreasonable actively supports over 310 entrepreneurs who have raised more than $8.9B in financing, generated over $7.1B in revenue, and impacting the lives of more than 800M individuals across 180+ countries. Daniel's mission through Unreasonable is to evolve capitalism specifically how the world's largest companies and iconic brands can partner with disruptive entrepreneurs to profitably solve seemingly intractable social and environmental problems. Daniel Epstein is one of the most impactful leaders of our generation. He is the Founder and CEO of Unreasonable Group, a company that takes a unique approach to accelerating the scaling of growth-stage companies solving the world's biggest problems. Unreasonable Group does a lot of things, as Daniel says, “It's hard to describe exactly what Unreasonable Group is. It's a company. A portfolio of initiatives. A rallying cry. An investment firm. A family. But to try to fully define it would mean to put it in a box, potentially jeopardizing its multifaceted uniqueness.” Today, their community of 324 Unreasonable Fellows is positively impacting over 1.4 billion individuals in more than 180 countries, and they have raised 8.9b in financing and generated $7.9 in revenue. Unreasonable Group believes that community is everything. Standing by that belief, the Unreasonable Fellows have lifetime support from their fellow peers, and a community of top-notch mentors ranging from Nobel Laureates to renowned executives and policymakers. In this episode we discuss: How Unreasonable Group is re-purposing capitalism (the most powerful tool of our age) The importance of mentorship and peer support at any stage in a CEO's journey What business and a hammer have in common (you might be surprised!) The important life lesson we can all learn from a little-known parable Key Takeaways: I loved Daniel's logical approach, rooted in his philosophy background, to business. “What do all entrepreneurs have in common? All entrepreneurs design solutions to problem sets. I can choose the nature of the problem sets I want to solve. Therefore, I'm only going to work on problem sets worthy of my life's work.” Take a moment to consider, is your organization working on problem sets that are worthy of your life's work? Never underestimate the magnetic power of making a difference. I am blown away by the caliber of mentors Unreasonable Group has, from Nobel Laureates to renowned executives and policymakers. It was refreshing to hear Daniel explain how they got these top-notch, unpaid mentors onboard. Unreasonable Group humbly offered them a chance to use their expertise where it's needed, with a chance to contribute to world-changing enterprises. That offer is compelling. It's not transactional. It taps into our deeply wired intrinsic motivation to contribute to something bigger than ourselves. There is power and freedom in shifting thinking from harnessing a competitive advantage, to nurturing a collaborative advantage in business. The very definition of a competitive advantage builds off a scarcity mindset. There isn't enough to go around, so hone your niche as well as possible while you fortify the walls of your castle in order to take an increasing slice of the limited pie. This mindset is insular, creating a divide of “us” and “them”, and a winner-takes-all world. But a collaborative advantage creates a cooperative world full of abundant possibilities. Your business can still be an expert in something, but you are liberated to lift your gaze to see how your expertise can be combined with another expert, and another, to create a collaborative impact that would never be possible from a single entity. You start building an “us” world, where you're playing on the same team, each position working together like a championship basketball team. Instead of being rooted in scarcity and fear, you're rooted in collaboration and possibility. How do we repurpose capitalism to create an inclusive and regenerative future? In this episode Amisha talks with Daniel Epstein, the founder and CEO of Unreasonable Group, an organisation dedicated to supporting an international Fellowship of 310 growth-stage entrepreneurs who are profitably solving global issues. The Unreasonable Collective offers a diverse community of individuals the ability to invest into ventures operating at the intersection of impact and advanced technologies. Daniel was named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders. He has been awarded Inc. Magazine's “30 under 30 entrepreneurs”, and Forbes identified him as one of the “top 30 most impactful entrepreneurs.” He received the prestigious “Entrepreneur of the World” award along with Richard Branson & the President of Liberia at the Global Entrepreneurship Forum. Beyond his capacities at Unreasonable, Daniel is a frequent keynote speaker, moderator, thought-leader, and advisor. Daniel shares his ideas on ‘repurposing capitalism'. He believes that leveraging it as a powerful tool can create a better future; one that prioritises regeneration, equability and inclusion with family, health and wellness, and spirituality at the heart of our communities. He shares some of the awe-inspiring businesses supported by Unreasonable Group offering promising and profitable solutions for creating this better future by addressing some of our biggest global issues whilst creating positive impact for planet and people. Together they recognise entrepreneurship as an embodied experience that is guided by intuition; our ‘faster' intelligence. It is often romanticised leading to burn out for a lack of access to long term support by high value mentors, community and financial backers. We learn that valuing our time as our most high value commodity, creating rituals, solid support systems and putting wellness first lay the foundations for growing meaningful businesses that will sustain our futures. Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706, to Abiah Folger and Josiah Franklin. Although Franklin began his life as the youngest son of a youngest son, he traveled through many parts of what is now the northeastern United States and the Province of Quebec and lived in four different cities in three different countries: Boston, Philadelphia, London, and Passy, France. In honor of Benjamin Franklin's 316th birthday, Márcia Balisciano, the Founding Director of the Benjamin Franklin House museum in London, joins us to explore Benjamin Franklin's life in London using details from the largest artifact Franklin left behind: his rented rooms at 36 Craven Street. In this bonus episode, I speak with Daniel Epstein, founder of Unreasonable on his long journey of building his impact portfolio of companies and supporting over 200 entrepreneurs who have raised more than $4B in financing, generated over $3B in revenue, and are impacting the lives of more than 400M individuals across 180+ countries.Daniel has been named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders, Daniel's life has been shaped by a fundamental belief that entrepreneurship is the answer to nearly all the issues we face today. By the time he received his undergraduate degree in philosophy, he'd already started three companies. In addition to being on FORTUNE's "the World's 50 Greatest Leaders" list alongside the likes of Bill Gates & Tim Cook, Daniel was awarded Inc. Magazine's “30 under 30 entrepreneur”, and Forbes identified him as one of the “top 30 most impactful entrepreneurs.” He also received the prestigious “Entrepreneur of the World” award along with Richard Branson & the President of Liberia at the Global Entrepreneurship Forum.Daniel's unfettered belief in entrepreneurs led to him founding and being the CEO of Unreasonable. Today Unreasonable actively supports over 200 entrepreneurs who have raised more than $4B in financing, generated over $3B in revenue, and are impacting the lives of more than 400M individuals across 180+ countries.Daniel speaks frequently on topics ranging from how multinationals and governments can better work with disruptive technologies, to working with public companies on how to create a worldclass and entrepreneurial culture across their employees, to the future of capitalism and our ability to profitably solve the most pressing challenges of this century. Daniel has given keynotes across more than 30 countries, has spoken at the White House, the UN General Assembly, in front of audiences larger than ten thousand, as part of annual corporate events and in closed door sessions with Fortune 50 executives and their boards of directors. He personally advises CEO's of multinationals on how to become more entrepreneurial and works with multi-billion dollar family offices on creating a new type of financial legacy with their investments — producing above market rate returns while combatting societal & environmental challenges.Check out:ImpactInvestor.io - Discover impact investors from around the world.Podcast Made with TransistorPodcast cover design Made with CanvaBuild amazing web platforms with Webflow
Serial CEO and entrepreneur Jeff Hoffman has had his hands in a number of different ventures, including Priceline, a Grammy-winning jazz album, an Emmy Award-winning television show and a best-selling book. On this episode of the Reboot Chronicles, I spoke with Jeff about 1871, the travel industry, helping entrepreneurs, the current financial craze of SPACs and crowdfunding and how to successfully scale your business. Inspired by 1871 As the chairman of the Global Entrepreneurship network, Jeff's focus is to create ecosystems for entrepreneurs in any geography and ecosystems, allowing for a breadth of experiences and backgrounds. Jeff was inspired early on by our Chicago-based incubator 1871, ranked the top global business incubator, with over $1 billion of funding associated with the member companies since inception. We have various corporate and entrepreneurial programs, with hundreds of startups and DEI initiatives for women, Hispanics, African-Americans, Veterans and Neighborhood Accelerators. Jeff and the Global Entrepreneurship team are also focusing on initiatives for female entrepreneurs and minorities, ensuring that they have the resources to succeed and grow their companies. The Art of Scaling Jeff and I have been deeply involved in scaling businesses, which led to an interesting conversation about how every startup is different. It's not enough to provide generic advice to an entrepreneur—you need to assess the business, people and market to give advice situationally. While some might need examples of how to pitch investors, others might require direct funding and scaling help. As scalers, we exist to create the experiences and space that early stage, growth stage and corporate innovators need while they build extraordinary businesses. Unreasonable Expectations Working with one of his mentees, Daniel Epstein, Jeff's involved in the Unreasonable Group, which was named after the George Bernard Shaw quote that reasonable people adapt to the world around them, while unreasonable people expect to adapt to them. The idea behind the group is that entrepreneurs are the people most likely to solve the world's biggest problems, so they focus on social entrepreneurship. To play into the idea of being “unreasonable,” the team spent over 100 days on a research ship, dedicating different boat decks to various initiatives. For example, the fifth deck was an incubator, where mentors would meet with entrepreneurs and help them grow their start-ups—sounds like the area I'd hang out in! Mentors would join the ship as they circumnavigated the globe, creating a collective of investors that companies could tap into for all aspects of their growth strategy. While this might not have been your traditional cruise ship, participants enjoyed themselves, and over $4.5 billion was raised though this and the other Unreasonable initiatives so far. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message

On this episode of Kickin' It With Keeler, Ricky begins the show by talking about the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament and looking ahead to Saturday's Final Four matchups. Who does he think will win between Houston-Baylor and UCLA-Gonzaga and advance to Monday's National Title game. Plus, he talks about Roy Williams retiring from UNC, the numerous coaching changes in college basketball, and reacts to the transfer portal being very active this year. Ricky is joined by Sam Connon from The Daily Bruin, UCLA's student newspaper, to talk about the Bruins' run to the Final Four, Mick Cronin as a coach, and whether or not they have a chance to beat Gonzaga and pull off a historic upset. Then, Ricky talks about what stood out to him on Opening Day in baseball, the MLB All-Star Game no longer being in Atlanta, and gives his predictions for this season. He is joined later by Daniel Epstein, the co-director of the IBWAA, to give Opening Day takeaways and talk about the storylines to follow this year. Finally, Ricky discusses the 17-game schedule in the NFL, he goes around the NBA to talk about why people are upset at the Nets signing Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge, and gives 3 golfers to watch at The Masters coming up this week. This episode of the Extra Mile Podcast is possibly the most unreasonable one I've ever recorded. Today my guest and I take a walk in Central Park through rolling thunder and a torrential downpour. But who better to do it with than the Founder and CEO of The Unreasonable Group, Daniel Epstein. The Unreasonable Group is a multi-media company, a private global network, and an investment firm that was created out of the desire to have the greatest impact possible on the world's toughest challenges. From the onset, they have believed that entrepreneurs building rapidly scalable businesses are the best bet for solving these challenges. To this end, the mission has always been to partner with and support world-class entrepreneurs positioned to bend history in the right direction. Daniel himself has achieved many of his own “unreasonable” dreams including being named one of Forbes' Top Impact Entrepreneurs (of any age) and The White House Impact Award's Top 100 Entrepreneurs in the US under age 30. But his passion for finding the world's most promising and impactful entrepreneurs is what truly stands out. Daniel and The Unreasonable Group has made possible some of the most mind-blowing, “unreasonable” solutions to solving what he calls “BFP's”, or Big F*ing Problems. Examples include a company that is literally making food out of the air, and drones that plant thousands of trees a day. The work these companies are doing is unbelievable. You won't want to miss hearing all about it. I'm so grateful to Daniel for taking some time to share his story with us. (And for having such a great attitude about walking in the pouring rain!) And, of course, a huge thank you to our sponsors at Aftershokz who encourage us to redefine our possible and achieve our own “unreasonable” goals. For discounts and more information, please visit www.charitymiles.org/aftershokz. Learn more about Daniel and The Unreasonable Group. #EveryMileMatters
It wasn’t always fireworks on the fourth. John Adams predicted Americans would celebrate the Second of July, the day Congress voted in favor of independence, "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other." He got the date wrong, but he was right about the festivities in commemoration of Independence Day. And yet July Fourth events have changed a great deal since 1776. How do our fireworks displays, barbecues, parades, and sporting events compare to the first and earliest celebrations of independence? How and why do we celebrate the United States and its independence as we do? Three historical experts take us through the early American origins of Fourth of July celebration. Create New Futures | How Leaders Produce Breakthroughs and Transform the World through Conversation
Daniel Epstein is a marketing and innovation consultant from Toronto, Canada. He worked for Procter & Gamble for 21 years where he was awarded the Harley Procter Marketers designation in 2007; the highest designation for marketing excellence. He led P&G’s future of marketing and brand building and was responsible for the commercial leadership of some of the most iconic brands at P&G. As he traveled the world for P&G, he developed a project named, Portraits in Faith, where he interviewed and photographed 450 people of faith in 27 different countries. In this conversation, I explore with Daniel how brain science is shaping the future of marketing, his insights about his time at P&G, and the journey he believes we are all on. Why the most effective marketing combines rational conscious messages with nonconscious cues? How do you increase the odds that consumers will purchase from you again? How is the brain wired to prioritize and delegate certain tasks? How Daniel made a course correction and found what he was meant to be doing? You are always better off in an organization where you feel there is a good fit Allow your special gift to come to the foreground "There is no more important job for us as leaders than to put people in the right jobs" The human process is not think--feel--do but rather do--feel--think Your habits and repeated actions are more predictive of your choices than attitudes and intentions We can heal ourselves by helping others heal. You want to heal every part of yourself, you want to retrieve all of who you are, and in so doing you won't be able but to help heal others FULL SHOW NOTES: http://www.avivconsulting.com/cnf13
