For episode 40 we welcome American artist and photographer Shannon Taggart and her documentary work with the spiritualist community culminating in the magnificent photo book SÉANCE. Her project evolved into an eighteen-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of ‘ectoplasm'—the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. We discuss what inspired Shannon's journey as well as some of the strange experiences she had and how it changed her. With SÉANCE, Taggart offers haunting images exploring Spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe: 150 of her original photographs, many of which have never been published, as well as rare historical photographs. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters (1984) and fourth-generation Spiritualist, and illustrated essays from curator Andreas Fischer and artist Tony Oursler, SÉANCE examines Spiritualism's relationship with human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. There were a few problems with the audio so apologies if its a bit up and down in places. Photographer Shannon Taggart became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received―Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest spiritualist community.  Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the spiritualist trade. Instead, spiritualism’s mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of “ectoplasm”― the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. Shannon is drawn to what she calls “psychological spaces.” She describes these as “invisible realities, like an interior experience you can’t really see,” and relishes the challenge of making visuals to describe them. Taggart says she values photography’s ability to open up new worlds, and she hopes readers of her new book will be transported while they explore the strange realm within it. Her book is titled, Séance, and Taggart offers a series of haunting photographs exploring spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation spiritualist, and illustrated essays from Andreas Fischer and Tony Oursler, Séance examines spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity and its connections with technology, and concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how spiritualism can move forward in the 21st century.  Stay connected @bridgetmarquardt, @ghost_magnet_podcast www.shannontaggart.com Ghost Magnet Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/Ghost-Magnet-with-Bridget-Marquardt-2480154975336666/ Bridget Marquardt Bridget Marquardt is best known to television audiences and pop-culture connoisseurs as the sweet and brainy star of E! David Bowie is, heter den. Tony Oursler signum är just förvridna ansikten. Kjolen förekommer även bland grovarbetande män i Sverige.

With John Wilson Dame Liz Forgan is the outgoing Chair of Arts Council England. Last night in her final speech in the role, she said that culture was a deep necessity for human beings, and appealed to politicians not to cut the arts budget. Dame Liz will be in the Front Row studio for a live interview. Actor Brian Cox reveals what it was like working in his hometown of Dundee for the first time in the television adaptation of the Radio 4 comedy series Bob Servant. And the star of Manhunter explains why, whenever he meets Anthony Hopkins, they never discuss Hannibal Lecter, a role they both played to great acclaim on the big screen. Vikings have a reputation as marauders and invaders. A new exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh aims to show who they really were and how they lived a thousand years ago. Author Janice Galloway has been to the exhibition. David Bowie's new single Where are We Now? caused a sensation when it was released online last Tuesday. The song was accompanied by a video by New York based video artist Tony Oursler, containing his signature image of faces projected onto stuffed dolls. He reflects on the experience of working with the elusive star and how Oursler's wife came to co-star in the video. Produced by Penny Murphy.

David Cameron, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and David Attenborough are among 135 people each reading a chapter a day of Herman Melville's epic novel Moby Dick, on a website curated by writer and whale enthusiast Philip Hoare. He talks about choosing an appropriate reading for the Prime Minister, and pairing chapters with works by artists such as Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Tony Oursler - director of the video for David Bowie's new single - who created today's image of a whale's eye. To mark the 150th birthday of the London Underground tomorrow, John and author Iain Sinclair go down the escalators to discuss the Tube's contribution to our culture, from the graphic-design, murals and architecture at the stations themselves, to the ways the Tube has cropped up in art, books and films - from Henry Moore's wartime drawings to American werewolves chasing hapless commuters. Utopia is a new TV thriller which focuses on a mysterious graphic novel and the sinister events that befall a group of people when they get hold of an original manuscript of it.
