POPULARITY
For Episode 13 of Pop Apocalypse, we welcome Shannon Taggart, an American photographer, writer, researcher, and curator known for exploring how photography can navigate boundaries between the seen and unseen. Her book, Séance (Fulger Press, 2019), offers hundreds of photographs documenting contemporary Spiritualism across the U.S. and Britain. We discuss what sparked Shannon's interests in Spiritualism, the intersecting histories of photography and Spiritualism, ectoplasm, what inspires people to become mediums, and the techniques she developed for photographing the invisible.
Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
A magazine feel to the show today as I talk with three guests. The discovery of Ernest Stone's archive reveals a once-hidden visual chronicle of New York from the 1960s to the 1980s, capturing its transformation, counterculture, and politics, cementing his legacy as a multifaceted artist, a legacy that may not have been uncovered without the dedication of his niece Melissa Berman, who is working to Ernie's last wishes to share his archive, preserving a vital piece of New York's visual history. Extra Miler Lynn Fraser talks about winning the UK's coveted Amateur Photographer of the Year award, and Rick Davy shares his visually documented look at creative individuals who live and work by the Cornish coast. Also on the show, following last week's episode featuring the Séance photographer Shannon Taggart, Per Birkhaug shares a strange ghostly encounter from a hotel room, and Bob Demers, AKA Bob of the Desert, has his own inexplicable stories. Plus, a look ahead to three special episodes and an assignment reminder; you've got just one more week to take part in our February photo challenge. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. WHY: A Sketchbook of Life is available here.
Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present a return appearance from Shannon Taggart. She first became aware of Spiritualism as a teenager, when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photographer, she began taking pictures where that message was received, Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest Spiritualist community—proceeding to other such communities as England's Arthur Findlay College. Taggart expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the Spiritualist trade. Instead, Spiritualism's mysterious processes, earnest practitioners, and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an eighteen-year journey that has taken her around the world. In this interview, she also discusses the 11th Annual Symposium at Lilly Dale, NY, set for July 23, 2025 through July 26, 2025. Events include: Spoon Bending Party, with Shannon Taggart and guests, The Paranormal Object, with Jack Hunter, The Cinematic Séance: A History of Spiritualism and Film, with Murray Leeder, The Mystery of Gef the Talking Mongoose (really), with Christopher Josiffe, Richard Shaver: A Personal Mythology of Secret Caves and Ancient Rocks, with Doug Skinner, and much more. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
My guest today is Shannon Taggart, a photographer and author renowned for her exploration of modern Spiritualism, a belief system centred on communicating with the deceased. Her fascination began as a teenager when a medium revealed details about her cousin's grandfather's death, sparking a two-decade journey documenting Spiritualist communities worldwide. Her acclaimed monograph, SÉANCE, delves into these practices and was named one of TIME Magazine's 'Best Photobooks of 2019'. From the mailbag and also on the show, Bob of the Desert uncovers some curious coincidences at 5,000 feet, Craig Wilson captures the beauty of the Lake District, Niels de Kemp reflects on how ageing shapes mastery of photography, and Gavin Perry talks about colour blindness as a photographer. Plus David Wright reminds us of this month's photo assignment. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. WHY: A Sketchbook of Life is available here.
I speak with photographer Shannon Taggart about the history of the Spiritualist movement and it's connections to Lily Dale, NY and also about her forthcoming photography book “Séance: Spiritualist Ritual and the Search for Ectoplasm” which she has been working on for almost 20 years and which documents her encounters with Spiritualists and physical mediums both in Lily Dale and around the world. Comics, like cinema, is an eminently modern medium. And as with cinema, looking closely at it can swiftly acquaint us with the profound weirdness of modernity. Do that in the context of a discussion on Charles Burns' comic masterpiece Black Hole, and you're guaranteed a memorable Weird Studies episode. Black Hole was serialized over ten years beginning in 1995, and first released as a single volume by Pantheon Books in 2005. Like all masterpieces, it shines both inside and out: it tells a captivating story, a "weirding" of the teenage romance genre, while also revealing something of the inner workings of comics as such. In this episode, Phil and JF explore the singular wonders of a medium that, thanks to artists like Burns, has rightfully ascended from the trash stratum (https://www.weirdstudies.com/20) to the coveted empyrean of artistic respectability—without losing its edge. BIG NEWS: • If you're planning to be in Bloomington, Indiana on October 9th, 2024, click here (https://cinema.indiana.edu/upcoming-films/screening/2024-fall-wednesday-october-9-700pm) to purchase tickets to IU Cinema's screening of John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, featuring a live Weird Studies recording with JF and Phil. • Go to Weirdosphere (http://www.weirdosphere.org) to sign up for Matt Cardin's upcoming course, MC101: Writing at the Wellspring, starting on 22 October 2024. • Visit https://www.shannontaggart.com/events and follow the links to learn more about Shannon's (online) Fall Symposium at the Last Tuesday Society. Daphne du Maurier was a prolific English writer of novels, plays, and short stories resonant with what she termed "a sense of unreality." In this episode, JF and Phil discuss her great short story "Don't Look Now," which Nicholas Roeg famously adapted to the screen in 1973 in a film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. Recorded live at Shannon Taggart's Lily Dale Symposium on July 25th, 2024, the discussion takes a number of turns, exploring the ghost as an "image of itself," the phenomenon of "deathishness," the experience of derealization, the human capacity to break time, and grief as a rift in time. In this computerized age, we tend to see memory as a purely cerebral faculty. To memorize is to store information away in the brain in such a way as to make it retrievable at a later time. But the old expression "knowing by heart" calls us to a stranger, more embodied and mysterious take on memory. In this episode, Phil and JF endeavour to recite two poems they've learned by heart, as a preamble to a discussion on poetry, form, and the magic of memory. Shannon Taggart is an American photographer and artist known for her work exploring themes of spirituality, mysticism, and the supernatural. She is particularly recognized for her book Séance which documents the practice of Spiritualism, a religious movement that believes in the possibility of communication with the spirits of the dead. Although she originally began as an artist with no interest in the paranormal, Taggart's fascination with Spiritualism began in 2001 when she started photographing in Lily Dale, New York, a town known for its psychic community. Topics covered include the intertwined histories of photography and Spiritualism, the Burned-Over District of New York, the connection between the explosion of American New Religions and the creation of the Erie canal, the power of synchronicity, photographing Loch Ness, hoaxing and fraud as invocation practices, an exploding cabinet, and much more. On the last week of July, 2023, Phil and JF were delighted to speak at Shannon Taggart's Science of Things Spiritual Symposium in Lily Dale, the nerve centre of the Spiritualist movement. As speakers, your hosts were part of an inspiring lineup of scholars, artists, and researchers committed to exploring the borderlands of art, science, religion, and the paranormal. They also had the honour of launching the symposium with a live recording held on the evening of the July 27th. The topic was Frederic W. H. Myers' autobiographical essay, "Fragments of Inner Life," first published in full in 1961, some sixty years after the author's death. Myers was one of the original members of the Society for Psychical Research in England. A poet and classicist, he remained committed to the scientific promise of paranormal investigation until the end of his life. His book Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death, also published posthumously, argues that psychical studies have confirmed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that death is just the beginning. In this talk, JF and Phil discuss Myers' relevance to 21st-century thinking on the Weird. In The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light, the cultural historian William Irwin Thompson predicted the rise of a new form of knowledge building, a direly needed alternative to the Wissenshaft of standard science and scholarship. He called it Wissenskunst, "the play of knowledge in a world of serious data processors." Wissenskunst is pretty much what JF and Phil have been aspiring to do on Weird Studies since 2018, but in this episode they are joined by a master of the craft, the computational sociologist and physicist Jacob G. Foster of UCLA. Jacob is the co-founder of the Diverse Intelligence Summer Institute (DISI (https://disi.org)), a gathering of scholars, scientists, and students that takes place each year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. It was there that this conversation was recorded. The topic was the Possible, that dream-blurred vanishing point where art, philosophy, and science converge as imaginative and creative practices. My guest for this episode is photojournalist Shannon Taggart, who joined me to talk about her 2019 photobook - 'Séance'. This project was the culmination of two decades of research into the history, rituals, practices and exponents of Spiritualism, a religious movement which emerged in the mid 19th Century in update New York in the USA and is now established across the globe. Shannon's interest in the subject stems from an experience as a child attending a service at a spiritualist church in Lily Dale - which is perhaps the town most emblematic of the movement in the United States. For the book, she expected to spend one summer figuring out the tricks of the Spiritualist trade but instead the mysterious processes, earnest practitioners, and neglected photographic history became an inspiration which would see her travel to the United Kingdom and Europe in order to see the project to its conclusion. 'Séance' features 150 of her original images, complimented by historical photographs, a commentary on her experiences, and a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, who himself is a fourth-generation Spiritualist. It concludes with a debate over ectoplasm and how Spiritualism can move forward in the twenty-first century. In the interview, we begin by discussing Shannon's initial experience at a spiritualist service and from there talk more about Lily Dale, and how the idea for the 'Séance' project came about. From there our conversation explores the relationship between photography and spiritualism, the practices and methodology that are used, and the mysterious, controversial substance that is ectoplasm. Further information about Shannon and her work can be be found at https://www.shannontaggart.com/. If you would like to support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere you can make a donation via Ko-fi. Gene and guest cohost Tim Swartz present award-winning photojournalist Shannon Taggart. Her book is: “SÉANCE: Spiritualist Ritual and the Search for Ectoplasm.” Taggart says that she first became aware of Spiritualism as a teenager, after her cousin received a message from a medium who revealed a startling detail about her grandfather's death that proved to be true. The book presents hundreds of original photographs, as well as historical imagery that attempts to capture spirits on film. Spiritualism's photographic past contains some of the most bizarre, absurd and uniquely unsettling images in the history of photography. Ms. Taggart's photographs have been exhibited and featured internationally, including within the publications TIME, New York Times Magazine, Discover, and Newsweek. Her work has been recognized by Nikon, Magnum Photos and the Inge Morath Foundation, American Photography, the International Photography Awards, and the Alexia Foundation for World Peace.
This week we sit down with award winning photographer Shannon Taggart, author of the monograph SÉANCE. We'll dive into Spiritualism and explore the practices that date back to the Fox Sisters. We'll get into spoon bending, the validity of orbs and the ever-controversial capture of ectoplasm. At the center of it all is the community of Lily Dale, a spiritualism hub in upstate New York. Join us as we navigate the fascinating world of Spiritualism and the devoted community behind it. Happy Haunting!
Shannon Taggart's book Seance is a landmark in art photography and the history of psychical research. Taggart spent years photographing practitioners of spiritualism in the U.S. and Europe in an effort to capture the mysteries of mediumship, ectoplasm, and spirit photography. In this episode, she joins JF and Phil for a conversation on the often-misunderstood tradition of spiritualism, the investigation of the paranormal, and the real magic of photography. If the technological medium is the message, then perhaps the spiritual medium is the messenger. Modern skeptics pride themselves on being immune to unreason. They present themselves as defenders of rationality, civilization, and good sense against what Freud famously called the "black mud-tide of occultism." But what if skepticism was more implicated in the phenomena it aims to banish than it might appear to be? What if no one could debunk anything without getting some of that black mud on their hands? In this episode, Phil and JF discuss the weird complicity of the skeptic and the believer in the light of George P. Hansen's masterpiece of meta-parapsychology, The Trickster and the Paranormal. For episode 40 we welcome American artist and photographer Shannon Taggart and her documentary work with the spiritualist community culminating in the magnificent photo book SÉANCE. Her project evolved into an eighteen-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of ‘ectoplasm'—the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. We discuss what inspired Shannon's journey as well as some of the strange experiences she had and how it changed her. With SÉANCE, Taggart offers haunting images exploring Spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe: 150 of her original photographs, many of which have never been published, as well as rare historical photographs. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters (1984) and fourth-generation Spiritualist, and illustrated essays from curator Andreas Fischer and artist Tony Oursler, SÉANCE examines Spiritualism's relationship with human celebrity, its connections to art, science, and technology, and its intrinsic bond with the medium of photography. There were a few problems with the audio so apologies if its a bit up and down in places. This week I am talking to Susan Barnes PHD about her book 'Unfolding Physical Mediumship: Historical, Philosophical, and Personal Perspectives'. Dr. Susan B. Barnes, CSNU is a communication professor, medium, and spirit artist. She is a certificate holder from the Spiritualist National Union (SNU) and tutors mediumship classes on SNUi, She has been trained in mediumship at the Arthur Findlay College and The International Spiritualist Federation.. Her work has been featured in the Psychic News, Psychic Observer and several television programs. In addition she is the curator of the Spirit Art Gallery in Cassadaga, New York. She has authored eight books including: Visual Communication: From Cave Art to Second Life, Branding as Communication, and Spiritualist Basics. Susan holds spirit art classes and teaches automatic drawing. She begins her medium readings by having the person being read choose a wax card with a design on it. During the reading, the image of the face of a loved one appears in the wax. Susan identifies the relationship to the person being read of the individual whose image appears in the wax and then proceeds with her medium reading. The faces in the cards change. They become stronger and sometimes disappear after being identified. The card is given to the person to keep. For years, Susan has been practicing Spiritualism and natural law. She sat in physical circles and tutored developing physical/trance mediums. She has designed a personal home for physical seances in Lily Dale, New York. She sits with spirit photographer Shannon Taggart to capture physical phenomena on film. Susan has transfiguration and table tipping photos of herself and other mediums.” Unfolding Physical Mediumship: Historical, Philosophical, and Personal Perspectives Spiritual awareness is happening all around us. We are living at a spiritual turning point. As individuals, we are learning how to tune into the spiritual voices of our loved ones and guides. The media has a fixation with mediums, death, and altered consciousness. Throughout these changes, physical mediumship is now becoming more prevalent in contemporary culture. In Unfolding Physical Mediumship, author Susan B. Barnes offers a basic understanding of physical mediumship, its phenomena, and its practices. She provides an overview of the subject with some practical guidelines on how you can experience physical mediumship yourself, also exploring the philosophy, religion, and science of Spiritualism, which is essential for developing physical mediumship with a spiritual connection. Unfolding Physical Mediumship can help you understand the philosophy, religion, and science behind physical mediumship as well as show you how both mediumship and Spiritualism can play a central role in your daily life. https://www.amazon.com/Unfolding-Physical-Mediumship-Philosophical-Perspectives-ebook/dp/B07HJDWDGV/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?dchild=1&keywords=Unfolding+Physical+Mediumship%3A+Historical%2C+P&qid=1592775045&sr=8-1-fkmr0 http://www.spiritartgallery.net/ https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/the-past-lives-podcast https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

Photographer Shannon Taggart became aware of spiritualism as a teenager when her cousin received a message from a medium that revealed details about her grandfather's death. In 2001, while working as a photojournalist, she began photographing where that message was received―Lily Dale, New York, home to the world's largest spiritualist community. Instead, spiritualism’s mysterious processes, earnest practitioners and neglected photographic history became an inspiration. Her project evolved into an 18-year journey that has taken her around the world in search of “ectoplasm”― the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material. Shannon is drawn to what she calls “psychological spaces.” She describes these as “invisible realities, like an interior experience you can’t really see,” and relishes the challenge of making visuals to describe them. Taggart says she values photography’s ability to open up new worlds, and she hopes readers of her new book will be transported while they explore the strange realm within it. Her book is titled, Séance, and Taggart offers a series of haunting photographs exploring spiritualist practices in the US, England and Europe. Supported with a commentary on her experiences, a foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation spiritualist, and illustrated essays from Andreas Fischer and Tony Oursler, Séance examines spiritualism’s relationship with human celebrity and its connections with technology, and concludes with the debate over ectoplasm and how spiritualism can move forward in the 21st century. Aired Wednesday, 21 February 2018, 3:00 PM ETSÉANCE: Spiritualist Ritual and the Search for Ectoplasm – Part Documentary, Part Ghost Story with Shannon TaggartJoin us this “WISDOM WEDNESDAY” at 12pm PST / 1PM MT / 2pm CST/ 3pm EST on INSPIRED LIVING RADIO as we welcome special guest Shannon Taggart to discuss her book SÉANCE: Spiritualist Ritual and the Search for Ectoplasm – Part Documentary, Part Ghost Story.OM TIMES CALL IN LINE: 1-202-570-7057INSPIRED LIVING RADIO: http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/inspired-living/Photographs by Shannon Taggart. Foreword by Dan Aykroyd, creator of Ghostbusters and fourth-generation Spiritualist. 16 years in the making, part documentary, part ghost story, SÉANCE blurs the boundary between anthropology and art with an unprecedented look at the religion of Spiritualism.Spiritualism is an American-born religion that believes we can communicate with spirits of the dead. I first became aware of Spiritualism as a teenager, after my cousin received a message from a medium who revealed a startling detail about my grandfather’s death that proved to be true. In 2001, I began photographing in the town where my grandfather’s message was received: Lily Dale, New York, home to the world’s largest Spiritualist community. I soon expanded the project and traveled to séance rooms around the world in a quest to find and photograph ‘ectoplasm’ – the elusive substance that is said to be both spiritual and material.SÉANCE will present original photographs, as well as historical imagery that attempts to capture spirits on film. Spiritualism’s photographic past contains some of the most bizarre, absurd and uniquely unsettling images in the history of photography. Shannon is one of the very few in our time. As a photographer and critically sympathetic researcher, Shannon demonstrates the most rare of traits: ability to think beyond given categories and never, ever to sacrifice intellectual integrity for drama or hasty conclusions. Shannon would be a stellar researcher in any field; but in this one, so fraught with pitfalls and blind alleys, she is a worldwide resource.
The story of Shannon's 16 year quest to photograph ectoplasm, the elusive substance that is part material and part spiritual. Additionally, she will describe her trails and tribulations in attempting to publish her book on the subject.

In this episode, photographer Shannon Taggart joined us to discuss her epic project on Spiritualism, her fascination with mystery and the occult, intentionally making mistakes in photography, a few brilliant photobooks and we end with perhaps the most fascinating theory about Michael Jackson that you'll ever hear. Shannon is an old friend of co-produce/audio engineer Tom Starkweather, and the spouse of season 2.29 guest Ralph Smith. When I dug into her Spiritualism project I was mesmerized and knew we were in store for a great conversation. I believe when she completes this project and publishes the book, it'll be a classic. For the photobook segment, we discussed The Morbid Anatomy Anthology, Casa Susanna, The Perfect Medium: Photography and the Occult, and Midnight by Arlene Gottfried. Thanks, once again to Brett A. Davis for joining us for the conversation and making some memorable photographs.
