J-Sei Home Closes After 30 Years, Leaving Bay Area Japanese Seniors in Need The 1960s and 70s were a pivotal time for community activism – with the civil rights and anti-war movements, the Black Panther Party, and student protests that established ethnic studies programs on college campuses. That activism led to a decades-old critical lifeline for Japanese American elders: culturally sensitive senior care homes. But in recent years, these kinds of homes have been closing down. As KQED's Cecilia Lei reports, the closures highlight how the Japanese American community is at a crossroads.    LA's El Compa Negro Plays Regional Mexican Music, Straight Outta Compton Compton is known for being the heart of West Coast rap – from Dr. Dre to Kendrick Lamar.  But Compton has changed a lot. According to census data, 70% of the city's residents identify as Latino or Hispanic. This shift can be seen and heard in an artist from Compton named Rhyan Lavelle Lowery, aka “El Compa Negro.” He's a Black musician who sings regional Mexican music. Reporter Aisha Wallace-Palomares takes us on a trip to meet him.  Transgender Community Builds Bonds at This SF Self-Defense Class Many transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive people are feeling vulnerable because of anti-trans policies from the Trump administration. There are a lot of efforts to fight for trans rights on the legal front, but there's also momentum to make sure trans and nonbinary people can defend themselves from threats of physical violence. Back in 2017, three black trans women founded the Compton's Transgender Cultural District in San Francisco - now more commonly known as The Transgender District. Its original name pulls upon the history of the first documented uprising of transgender and queer people in the country, the Compton's Cafeteria Riots of 1966. Of course, the history of trans people in the Bay Area - in particular in San Francisco - runs deep, so much so that in 2021, advocates within the Transgender District got the month of August to be recognized as Transgender History Month in the city and county of San Francisco. Then California took that a step further last year, when the state assembly voted in favor of making Transgender History Month a statewide designation. The first full state recognized Transgender History Month is the August we are in right now. The legacy of trans people is what Andrea Horne is focused on and she's this week's guest on In Depth. Horne is a former actress, model, jazz singer - and she's been a fixture in the trans community of San Francisco for over 40 years, working to support the black and brown transgender women in the Tenderloin. Horne is also a keeper of stories, of the histories of trans women of color that might otherwise be lost. Now, she's turning her research into a book titled, "How Black Trans Women Changed the World."

Oneika Raymond walks Castro Street with filmmaker and drag performer Joshua Grannell (he/him) on their way to opening night of Frameline, the largest and longest running queer film festival in the world. The Castro is a historic San Francisco neighborhood which first became known as a hub for the Gay Civil Rights Movement of the 1970s. Oneika meets up with Joshua, or Peaches Christ, outside Queer A.F., a queer arts space dedicated to keeping LGBTQ+ artists in the Bay Area. It's also the site of  Castro Camera, the former headquarters of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. Joshua takes Oneika on a tour down memory lane as they stroll Castro Street's Rainbow Honor Walk, pointing out notable figures like disco singer Sylvester along the way. He reflects on how the neighborhood has changed since he moved to the enclave as an aspiring filmmaker in 1996, and points out one institution that continues to be a gathering place for the queer community: the famed Castro Theatre. Oneika and Joshua continue their conversation at Orphan Andy's, a rainbow-themed greasy spoon that has been serving up late night eats since 1977. There, she learns more of the lesser-told history behind the city's queer neighborhoods, like the newly designated Transgender District in the Tenderloin. Joshua also shares how he got his start as a drag queen, and why the Castro was the perfect neighborhood for him to foster that self-expression and launch his drag show, Midnight Mass. Of course, there are countless drag performances to choose from across the city, be it brunch at El Toro, cabaret at the Oasis, or seasonal shows at W San Francisco. They'll wrap up the day by heading to the red carpet at Castro Theatre for Frameline and witness that cinematic magic come to life in the audience

Born and raised in California, Angel is first generation-Guatemalan. Being young, gay, and a person of color, he had to overcome his fear of being rejected or not being good enough if he chose to embrace all parts of himself, good and bad, and it sure didn't help when he became a born-again Christian in 2016. Since then, he has reclaimed his identity, and has worked hard to accept that God loves him the way he is, and that it takes faith to overcome any obstacles— faith that he found in the recovery community. Along with faith, he discovered his alter ego, Linda Summers, who has helped him share his painful and most beautiful experiences in drag with the San Francisco community as a form of healing.* the interview refers to a performance piece you can watch by clicking this, Linda Summers - Violeta conversation about Drag & Spirituality with hostess a queer chaplain, B0NNi33 Vi0L3T (AKA Duane Quintana) sponsored by GLIDE & Glide Pride TeamPlease make donations to The Transgender DistrictProject OverviewThe GLIDE Pride Team & GLIDE Memorial Church in presenting the legendary B0NNi33 Vi0L3T in the second installment of her series of talk show style interviews and culminating “Sunday Third Celebration.” Featuring different San Francisco Bay Area drag artists “Drag and Spirituality” starting on July 19th , 2020 and culminated on August 16th , 2020. My spirituality stems from my Jewish upbringing and principles I've learned about in recovery.I found it interesting to speak about spirituality especially as a liberal queer Jew in recovery. It's refreshing to see that the concept of God and powers beyond are not exclusive to the likes of the Grahams, GOP, and Hobby Lobby. There is a lot I've learned that needs to be unlearned." - Menorah Manischevitz* the interview refers to a performance piece you can watch by clicking this, Menorah Manischevitz - I am Nothinga conversation about Drag & Spirituality with hostess a queer chaplain, B0NNi33 Vi0L3T (AKA Duane Quintana) sponsored by GLIDE & Glide Pride TeamPlease make donations to The Transgender DistrictProject OverviewThe GLIDE Pride Team & GLIDE Memorial Church in presenting the legendary B0NNi33 Vi0L3T in the second installment of her series of talk show style interviews and culminating “Sunday Third Celebration.” Featuring different San Francisco Bay Area drag artists “Drag and Spirituality” starting on July 19th , 2020 and culminated on August 16th , 2020. Asta Mao was birthed three years ago after their previous alter ego, Qrystal Reyna, sacrificed herself to the fire of creation. Asta Mao is a performance drag artist, focusing her performances in identity politics and social justice. She's also done stupid stuff in drag involving Nutella and a giant dildo. Asta's path to spirituality was found in the rooms of recovery. Her other alter ego, James, extends this spirituality by becoming a Glide member and has sung in the internationally renowned Glide Ensemble.  * the interview refers to a film and a performance piece you can watch by clicking the following links.
