¿Buena suerte, mala suerte, destino o milagro? We get to do the rest of the people we had for last weeks episode this week, we may do a third part to this soon. Not to give any details because these peoples stories are pretty short, so we have Tsutomu Yamaguchi, followed by Aimo Koivunen. Then we take a slight detour to the horse, Staff Sergeant Reckless, and finally we finish with the "unluckiest man in the world", Walter Summerford, though bad luck may not be a super power. Though I hope it is because I'd be unstoppable! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support
Japan and the United States ar at war. To force a Japanese resistance, the Americans choose to use atomic weapons. They drop an atom bomb named Little Boy on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, then a second bomb, Fat Man on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The temperature at the centre of the explosion that razed Hiroshima rose to 300,000°C. The number of people killed by the blast, the heat and the subsequent fire storms is difficult to determine, approximations range from 110,000 to 250,000 dead. Tsutomu Yamaguchi survived both attacks.

Yes, you read the title right, we are back in the water again! This week we discuss a tale that was first brought to our attention by a famous movie. The survivor story was the bases for Captain Quint's hatred and fear of sarks in "Jaws". I've been wanting to do this story for a long time as Jade is a HUGE fan of the movie. Then when she told the story about Tsutomu Yamaguchi, it sparked the recollection of the USS Indianapolis, so I of course had to tell that story! We also discuss why we had to take a break from recording as Jade delt with Bell's palsy and was unable to speak properly. I guess in a way Jade survived not being able to talk for a few weeks, which if you knew her might be considered a true tragedy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whatdidntkillme/support
This episode is a "little" bit late. And by a little I mean over a month. We had a few medical issues and personal celebrations (congratulations to the newlyweds) that delayed our normal productions. Now that that is all over with, we hope to bring things back to normal. Sorry about the delay for those few of you who listen and thank you for your patience. That being said, this episode includes one very lucky man, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived BOTH the nuclear bomb attacks on Japan during WWII; and a brave strong woman, Cheryl Thomas, who survived one of the nation's most notorious serial killers. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whatdidntkillme/support

Tsutomu Yamaguchi needed to catch a train that would bring him from Hiroshima to his home in Nagasaki. The date was Aug. 6, 1945, and it would change his life. Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the luckiest unlucky survivor you’ll hear about. At age 27, in 1945 Mr. Yamaguchi and his colleagues were sent from Nagasaki to Hiroshima for an extended work trip. On the day, before they were due to return the “Little Boy” nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.Mr. Yamaguchi was late for work when the bomb was dropped, and woke up to see a crown of fire and mushroom cloud soar into the skies. His skin was red, raw, burning and he had a ringing in his ears like he had never experienced before. After finding his colleagues they made their way to the station to catch an evacuation train back to Nagasaki. After the gruelling journey back, Mr. Yamaguchi showed up for work Monday morning to explain what had happened. Whilst explaining what had happened to his co-workers, there was a flash and Mr. Yamaguchi was knocked unconscious. When he finally came around, it was more carnage. Once again he woke up to a mushroom cloud and the city on fire. It was the 2nd nuclear bomb.He kept his experience hidden and unspoken about until the age of 90. He wrote a book of poetry and spent his remaining years talking about his experience. Listen in to find out the full incredible story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi.Don't forget to leave us a review! You can also visit our website at www.notmenottodaypodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/notmenottodaypodcast/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/notmenottodaypodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/NotMeNotTodayPC
I byen Nagasaki.

All of us are in the middle of trying to survive a disaster. Tsutomu Yamaguchi managed to do so twice in one week.
Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a 29-year-old engineer in Japan. On August 6, 1945, he was preparing to head back home after a three-month business trip in Hiroshima. On the way to the station, however, he realized he forgot an item at his workplace and went back to retrieve it. Upon returning to the station, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb only 3 km away from Yamaguchi. He was left with burns, ruptured eardrums, and temporary blindness from the ordeal, but he survived and was able to return to his hometown of Nagasaki Yamaguchi reported back to work three days later and was describing the experience to his supervisor. While talking to him, the American bomber Bockscar dropped another atomic bomb, this one also just three km away from Yamaguchi. Incredibly, he survived this blast as well, and is the only person officially recognized as having survived both explosions. In Deuteronomy (31:6), we are encouraged to “be strong and courageous. … [God] will not leave you or forsake you.”Our hope is that when this pandemic is over, we will all be able to look back and share our experiences of survival and isolation. The fact of the matter, however, is that we are never truly alone. God is always with us, and will never leave us or forsake us.
Drawing on the voices of atomic bomb survivors and the new science of forensic archaeology, Charles Pellegrino describes the events and the aftermath of two days in August when nuclear devices, detonated over Japan, changed life on Earth forever. To Hell and Back offers readers a stunning, “you are there” time capsule, wrapped in elegant prose. Charles scientific authority and close relationship with the A-bomb survivors make his account the most gripping and authoritative ever written. At the narrative's core are eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand—the Japanese civilians on the ground. As the first city targeted, Hiroshima is the focus of most histories. Pellegrino gives equal weight to the bombing of Nagasaki, symbolized by the thirty people who are known to have fled Hiroshima for Nagasaki—where they arrived just in time to survive the second bomb. One of them, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the only person who experienced the full effects of both cataclysms within Ground Zero. The second time, the blast effects were diverted around the stairwell behind which Yamaguchi's office conference was convened—placing him and few others in a shock cocoon that offered protection while the entire building disappeared around them. Dr. Pellegrino is the author of twelve books, including Unearthing Atlantis and Her Name, Titanic. He is a paleontologist who designs robotic space probes and relativistic rockets and is the scientist whose dinosaurs cloning recipe inspired Michael Crichton's bestselling novel Jurassic Park. In his spare time, Dr. Pellegrino writes acclaimed sf novels and mind-bending technothrillers. Jan de Bont, the director of Speed and Twister, has been signed on to direct the film version of Pellgrino's biological disaster novel Dust. The recipient of the 2000 Isaac Asimov Memorial Award for Science Writing,

Pika-don is a graphic novel created by the Stanford Graphic Novel Project 2010. Twenty students came together to tell the tale of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a man who survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. This story is a tale of courage, hope, and perseverance.
