We're talking comic books, real books, digital reading, and how we actually consume stories in 2025. From diving deep into Marvel Unlimited to cracking open physical comics from Epic Panels, we break down what's working, what's frustrating, and why reading order matters more than people admit. The conversation jumps from the Ultimates line and Ultimate Wolverine to Invincible's Battle Beast, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell, and why some comics are just not made for casual reading. 00:00 Intro – Getting Back Into Comics (Digital vs Physical) 00:25 Buying Random Comics & Epic Panels Shoutout 01:22 Comic Commentary, Stan Lee, and Jim Lee Footage 01:38 Why The Ultimates Is So Good (And Ending Too Soon) 02:09 Retelling Comics Without Copyright Headaches 03:18 Marvel Unlimited's Strengths and Its Biggest Trade-Off 03:41 Reading House of M, Avengers Disassembled, and Full Context 04:16 How Fast We Actually Read Comics 05:00 Why Reading Order Matters (And Why It's Overwhelming) 06:15 Retcons, Timeline Chaos, and Comic Book Confusion 07:00 Comic Book FOMO vs Casual Reading 07:52 Ultimate Spider-Man #1 and Absolute Batman 09:09 Project Hail Mary Review (Avoid the Trailers) 10:35 Why the Storytelling in Project Hail Mary Works 12:18 Audiobooks, Audible, and Reading Goals for 2026 12:35 Invincible Returns: Battle Beast Explained 14:18 Power Scaling in Invincible 15:00 Ultimate Wolverine and the Best X-Men Stories Right Now 17:44 Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell (Old Man Daredevil) 20:39 Why This Daredevil Story Hits So Hard 21:16 Epic Fantasy Reading: Stormlight Archive & Brandon Sanderson 24:12 Name of the Wind and Unfinished Series Debate 25:02 Final Book Shoutouts and Wrap-Up We also get into: Why Marvel Unlimited is great… and where it falls short The Ultimates run and why it feels destined to end badly Invincible, Battle Beast, and power scaling done right Old-man superheroes, brutal endings, and earned tragedy How reading habits differ (single issues vs full arcs) Audiobooks, Audible goals, and giant fantasy commitments This is a loose, honest conversation about reading for joy, context, and obsession — not checking boxes.

On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Brian Michael Bendis. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Brian knew from an early age he wanted to make comics. His late teens and twenties were spent making his own comics, some of them published by Caliber Press, and in 1996, a lot of this work was collected together at Image. This led to working on the Spawn spin-off Sam and Twitch, and in 1998, he began releasing Powers, which would go on to garner both critical and commercial success, as well as Harvey and Eisner Awards. In 2000, Brian co-created Miles Morales when he began writing Ultimate Spider-Man. The next year, Brian began a defining run on Daredevil and co-created Jessica Jones with the start of Alias. And this is essentially just the first decade of his career! Since then, he went on to write defining runs on comics like Avengers and New Avengers, events like House of M, books like Superman and Action Comics for DC, and most recently, for the 25th anniversary of Powers, Brian and artist Michael Avon Oeming are creating a new 12-issue series at Dark Horse, and it's great! Read transcriptWelcome, web-slinging console warriors and handheld hop-scotchers! Prepare your cartridges and grab your controllers, because this week on Play Comics we're diving into the gloriously chaotic streets of New York with Spider-Man: Battle for New York, the 2005/2006 portable powerhouse that took Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's Ultimate Spider-Man universe and somehow crammed all of Manhattan's mayhem into a GBA and DS-sized punch-up bonanza. Because apparently, someone looked at one of the most beloved comic runs of the 2000s and thought, “You know what this needs? A brawler where Spidey spends most of his time frantically hammering the same three buttons while dodging increasingly ridiculous villain attacks.” Released across Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, this wasn't your typical web-slinging adventure—it was more like someone distilled all of Ultimate Spider-Man's most explosive moments into a side-scrolling arcade experience where the city itself becomes just as much of an enemy as Green Goblin ever was. With a roster of villains pulled straight from the comics and more “beat stuff up” objectives than you can shake a web at, this game proved that sometimes the best way to honor a beloved comic series is to completely reinvent what it means to be Spider-Man. This week, we're absolutely thrilled to welcome the phenomenally knowledgeable Jarrett Tyree from Has To Do With Spider-Man I Think, who brings an encyclopedic understanding of all things Arachnid and animated to help us untangle whether this game managed to capture the kinetic energy of Bendis's run or if it just left our webbing all tangled in the wrong places. Jarrett's the kind of Spider-expert who can probably explain exactly why this game makes the choices it does, while also gently reminding us that sometimes video game adaptations are more “inspired by” than “faithful to” the source material. So strap in your web-shooters, prepare for some serious button-mashing mayhem, and get ready for an episode that explores whether this dual-platform adaptation is a hidden gem of portable gaming or just another case of “well, we had to do SOMETHING with this license.” Let's see if Battle for New York is worth defending! Learn such things as: How connected to the actual comic storylines is this game, or does it just borrow character names and call it a day? Does an action-packed comic run actually translate better into a side-scrolling brawler than into an open-world adventure? Why do handheld games keep trying to squeeze console-sized epicness into screen sizes that make text completely illegible? And so much more!
