We've all heard politicians talk about helping people, but what happens when someone actually means it? Dr. Michael Jeyakumar isn't your typical politician. He's not slick, not hungry for power, and definitely not here to sell you a dream. In fact, he stepped away from the noise because he couldn't stand how broken the system is.. and how comfortable we've all become living in it. In this episode, we talk about the messiness of politics in Malaysia. The lies we tell ourselves about progress. The strange obsession our leaders have with looking rich while the country crumbles quietly in the background. But it's not all doom. We also talk about hope; real, gritty, imperfect hope. The kind that lives in ordinary people doing quiet things. This one's not for people who love the status quo. It's for the ones who know something's off, and are ready to think about what comes next.   Chapters 00:00 - Intro 02:50 - Understanding Socialism in Malaysia 05:58 - The Evolution of Socialist Ideals 09:03 - Cuba and Venezuela: Case Studies in Socialism 12:12 - China's Unique Model of Socialism 14:54 - Vietnam's Approach to Economic Development 18:00 - The Threat of Socialism to Capitalism 21:00 - Corruption and the Human Condition in Politics 25:33 - Corruption and Wealth in Politics 28:39 - The Duality of Politicians 30:07 - Public Sentiment and Political Shifts 35:35 - Polarization and Voting Trends 40:49 - Principles of Life and Society 45:11 - Hope for the Future   --- Dr. Michael Jeyakumar URL: https://partisosialis.org/member/dr-michael-jeyakumar-devaraj/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/partisosialis/ --- Follow Chuang here:  URL: http://www.domore.my/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hsu-chuang-khoo-ab199343/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/khoo.chuang/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/khoohsuchuang/ --- Follow DoMore here:  WEBSITE: https://www.domore.my/ YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/DoMoreTakeChargeofYourLife ITUNES: https://apple.co/2lQ47mS GOOGLE PLAY: https://bit.ly/3b1l8iO SPOTIFY: https://tinyurl.com/y6zufvcp PODBEAN: https://domoreasia.podbean.com/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/domore.asia/

A May Day 2024 Special [May 1st, 2024]

Global Capitalism: Live Economic Update

Play Episode Listen Later May 3, 2024 58:50

Today we offer a very special Global Capitalism special in honor of “May Day” Today's May Day Special, a collaborative effort with long-time contributor Charles Fabian, opens with the major causes for why May Day 2024 is so special. These include the fact that the great crash of global capitalism in 2008-2009 shook the world in ways that include shocking a declining US labor movement back to life and growth. We saw that in 2011 when the Occupy Wall Street movement shook the US and beyond again. Then the "Fight for $15" swept across low-wage America as it still does. Then a socialist named Bernie Sanders rose to prominence and changed how millions of Americans viewed the economy and could see the need to vote for a direct challenge to capitalism. Nor did the pandemic slow down the growth of an anti-capitalist left that shows up these days as a 70% approval rating for unions in the Gallup poll and for hugely successful unionization drives in low-wage areas like Amazon and Starbucks, in auto plants in the US south, in militant new union leaderships elected in the Teamsters and the UAW. May Day - the international celebration of the working class - has much to cheer for in 2024. And the international context is special too. The US-led, formerly dominant G7 no longer presides over world capitalism unchallenged. The BRICS - China and its allies - are a new alternative leadership of the world economy with a much more ambiguous relationship to capitalism. May Day 2024 welcomes nothing less than a new world economy and one far more favorable to working-class struggles than we have seen in years. It's Part Four this week, and things are really heating up. We're bridging the gap between the “critique” years and the “praxis” years with a deep dive into the late 1800s. Mikhail Bakunin and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon make grand entrances into our narrative and bring some intrigue along with them. Part Four covers the pivotal year of 1870, the splinter between the anarchist and Democratic socialist wings of the party, and speaks to the variables present on the European continent at this critical juncture. The episode culminates with the Paris Commune of 1871 and lays the groundwork for Part Five where we'll cover the rise of the Bolsheviks and the American labor movement. Are we having fun yet? We have the third installment in our socialism series, where we resume our journey beginning in 1825 and the collapse of Robert Owen's New Harmony experiment. This next chapter introduces the work of John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx and touches on Mikhail Bakunin and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, both of whom we'll explore more fully in Part Four. Not gonna lie, this series may never end. But this is a critical piece of the puzzle that we're calling the “Critique Period,” lasting from 1825 to around 1870. This era is punctuated by widespread revolts in 1848 that inform some of the new thinking around capitalism and the plight of the working class—all leading into the explosion of socialist philosophy that hits the mainstream consciousness following the events of 1870 (again, for Part Four). Socialist visions of communal shared domestic labor and child rearing have existed in the past and exist in the present. In 1917 following the Russian Revolution the government changed the rules and created a domestic revolution. At the turn of the century in the United States over 200 large and established socialist communes existed. Domestic revolution was then considered a valuable means of revolutionary change.   Capitalism Hits Home with Dr. Harriet Fraad (CHH) is a @democracyatwrk production. Believe it or not, we're still not up to Karl Marx because we're mired in the turn of the 19th Century. Part Two reveals the progenitors of socialist theory toward the end of the Enlightenment era. Charles Fourier, Henri de Saint-Simon and Robert Owen lay the groundwork coming out of the American and French revolutions by imagining new societies and mechanisms of power. In their writings we begin to see the roots of Marxian philosophy and draw upon concepts and experiments that would influence Marx and others during the second industrial revolution. This week on UNFTR we have the first in the series on socialism. After our “ISMs” refresher last week, we dip our toes into the communal water and begin the process of unpacking an economic and ideological philosophy that inspires rage on the right, hope on the left and (mostly) fear in the middle. The episode starts off with listener feedback from a call we put out on social media and YouTube. We asked listeners to explain socialism in a couple of sentences and the responses were amazing. The episode continues with examples of how socialism is portrayed in the mainstream media, some basic misconceptions and UNFTR style level-setting on key terms and definitions. I try to explain why to the best of my ability, as I have before, but I feel every time that I learn something new I am able to add to this conversation. I hope this is educational, or understandable at the very least. If you have any questions, critiques, or want to reach out to me for any other reason you can email me or reach out on social media. Richard D. Wolff is Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts, Amherst where he taught economics from 1973 to 2008. He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, New York City. Earlier he taught economics at Yale University (1967-1969) and at the City College of the City University of New York (1969-1973). In 1994, he was a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Paris (France), I (Sorbonne). Wolff was also a regular lecturer at the Brecht Forum in New York City. Professor Wolff's weekly show, Economic Update with Richard D. Wolff, is syndicated on over 70 radio stations nationwide and available for broadcast on Free Speech TV. Professor Wolff enjoys french cuisine and lives in New York City with his wife, Dr. Harriet Fraad. They have two adult children. Over the last twenty-five years, in collaboration with his colleague, Stephen Resnick, he has developed a new approach to political economy. While it retains and systematically elaborates the Marxist notion of class as surplus labor, it rejects the economic determinism typical of most schools of economics and usually associated with Marxism as well. This new approach appears in several books co-authored by Resnick and Wolff and numerous articles by them separately and together. Common to all of Professor Wolff's work are two central components. The first is the introduction of class, in its elaborated surplus labor definition, as a new "entry point" of social analysis. The second is the concept of overdetermination as the logic of an analytic project that is consistently non-determinist. Want to sneak into Dr. Wolff's economics class? Few words in the American political lexicon are as freighted with fear as socialism. It can conjure thoughts of diabolical Communism, the horrors of Stalin and Mao, and the Iron Curtain. In some quarters socialism is un-American because of its perceived threat to overturn capitalism and erode freedom. But attitudes are changing, especially among younger Americans who are embracing less narrow definitions of socialism. It is time for a better understanding of a word that has meant different things to different people throughout history.
