The whole process of working with the Enneagram to grow and transform is based on observing what's really happening to us. Self-observation and self-reflection sometimes sound simple, but as a psychotherapist, Beatrice Chestnut knows from working with clients that it doesn't come naturally to us. People are often very surprised at what they find when they intentionally try to observe something in themselves.  The Enneagram helps point out patterns in our personality that we can intentionally observe. Once we make our unconscious patterns conscious, it's almost like our personality loses its reason for being. Because the personality is a self-defensive structure, shining a light onto our unconscious patterns makes it easier to eventually work on letting them go. Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes provide practical ideas about what to do for each of the nine Enneagram types to notice our personality patterns and how to make them more conscious.    Like learning about the Enneagram? Every Enneagram type has a head center. While types Five, Six, and Seven overuse this center, the Body and Heart types underuse it.  In this episode, Uranio Paes explains that the majority of people use the most basic part of the lower Head Center too often and during inappropriate times. It is the mechanical part of the brain that is used to memorize information without critical thinking or reasoning. In this mode, people are vulnerable to confirmation bias because anything that challenges the current way of thinking is avoided. Uranio describes the phases of developing the Head Center and how it can test our understanding of the world around us.  Also, this episode's Top Five is light-hearted. It is the top five most interesting things that Uranio Paes noticed about Beatrice Chestnut. Enneagram 2.0 with Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes

We are not our personalities. However, when we are unaware of our lower selves, it's easy to identify with our personalities. In this episode, Uranio Paes goes through each of the nine types to give examples of how to fool the personality so that we can be free from its hold on us.  Each of the nine Enneagram types has an over-developed Center of Intelligence. Uranio talks about The Fourth Way, an approach to self-development created by George Gurdjieff.  Gurdjieff was the pioneer who brought the Enneagram to the West. He taught that the first way is the way of the body, the second is the way of the heart, and the third is the way of the mind. The Fourth Way is mixing these three Centers of Intelligence so our personality doesn't control how we react and we can be a more complete human beyond the confines of our personality.  Check out our podcast episodes on Levels of Awareness: The Enneagram Levels of Awareness Part 1 of 2 https://youtu.be/5FfW5Duma6w The Enneagram Levels of Awareness Part 2 of 2 https://youtu.be/Ox54PKEhrt4 Join a community of Enneagram enthusiasts and participate in live monthly webinars and Q&As with Bea and Uranio. In this week's episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes talk about the Enneagram Types and Subtypes of world leaders of today and of the past— from Zelenskyy to Obama, from Ghandi to the Royal Family. Coming from a place of humility, they share that this is an informal conversation where they discuss opinions that are based on experience and research and are not absolute facts. Some leaders connect with emotions and are charming while others are angry and unable to apologize. Having conversations about what a famous leader's Enneagram type and Subtype could be is one of the ways we learn about what those types are all about. It's not about being right, it's about marshaling evidence and having fun while developing an understanding of the nuances of different Subtypes. As leaders, any type with a low level of awareness in a position of power can act out in negative ways, which is why Bea and Uranio work so hard to raise consciousness. In this week's episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes, discuss the launch of their new adaptive Enneagram typing test, Chestnut Paes Sullivan Enneagram Compass. They discuss why Enneagram tests could be a good thing, how they can help people, and also what to keep in mind in terms of the downsides of taking an Enneagram test. After spending years on this assessment with their partner Fergus Sullivan, who has experience in using psychometrics, they understood that the big stumbling block is that test questions tend to focus on blind spots, typically the unconscious side of personalities. Therefore, they felt the test needs to ask specific questions leading not just to the Type, but to the Subtype, to provide more accurate results. Bea and Uranio created beautiful, customized 20-page reports, diving deep into strengths, challenges, and even growth paths for each Subtype. The report also contains a comparison to your second-highest-ranking type, for the minority of test-takers who feel that the first type doesn't accurately describe their personality. It's designed mainly for professionals to use in business, but it can be taken for personal use, as well. In this week's episode, Uranio Paes interviews Beatrice Chestnut about one of her favorite topics—Dante's Divine Comedy and its connections to the Enneagram. Bea studied English Literature in undergrad and has always been fascinated with analyzing literature and looking for themes within stories. She decided to read Dante's Divine Comedy looking for not only the types and the passions but different elements about the Enneagram, especially as a path of spiritual transformation. In this 700 year old masterpiece that is still very relevant today, there are three sections, Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise, which map out different states of awareness and the process to achieve higher states of being. This summer, Beatrice Chestnut returns to Florence, Italy to conduct a workshop to help students discover the intersections of Dante's work with the Enneagram system through lectures, music, art, dialogue, meditation, and bodywork. Students will explore Florence's ancient streets through daily excursions, piazzas, restaurants, food, and wine. Friction and differences are breeding grounds for real conflicts, especially for couples. Because of one's environment, upbringing, situation, and other factors, we develop different personalities which can all contribute to our reactive patterns and biases. Personality is such a complex psychological concept but what if we can bring understanding to what's going on? See where these perspectives are coming from? That would be a real game-changer! Beatrice Chestnut, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist coach and business consultant based in San Francisco, and Uranio Paes, MBA is a world-renowned Enneagram teacher and business consultant. They are the founders of Chestnut Paes Enneagram Academy and the hosts of the Enneagram 2.0 Podcast. They are also the authors of the forthcoming book, The Enneagram Guide to Waking Up: Find Your Path, Face Your Shadow, Discover Your True Self. In their work around the world, Beatrice and Urano focus on using the Enneagram as a tool for personal and professional transformation. In this episode, they briefly talk about the nine personality types in the Enneagram, the habitual patterns around these types, and essentially how this can be a powerful tool in improving relationships. Today we speak with Shay and Amanda, along with our very own Chad. We all know how special Fours are, and how much they fear being anything but ordinary. But it's not every day we get to hear the perspectives from two self-preservation subtypes and one relational (one-to-one) subtype at the same time. We discuss what it's like being a heart type as our center of intelligence, how the subtypes really opened up our self-understanding, and the concept of envy. Fours are constantly feeling what they're missing both consciously and unconsciously. Fours highly value authenticity. They are also image focused, but not in a self-absorbed way as some may think. The lens is turned in on themselves a great deal. They have superpowers with empathy, but sometimes when they turn the introjection upon themselves, they can become moody or melancholic, even angry, as they take on the feelings and impressions from others. We discuss all this and much more on this week's Enneagram Four episode. Time Stamps: 1:54--Shay Bocks introduces herself 4:05--Amanda introduces herself 7:36--Chad discusses how he knew pretty much right away that he was a Four, but it was discovering the subtype that really helped 11:00--Amanda talks about how it is as a heart type being married to a body type 17:20--Amanda agrees with Shay about the image focus of the fours and how it manifests 22:50--Amanda picks up on what Chad said about the way he had become angry among his peers when he wasn't being recognized for his value and contribution. She discusses how you just want to feel like there's a place for you in the world. 27:10--Shay helps us understand the concept of introjection by beginning with the more commonly understood idea of projection 36:18--The masochism comes in for the Fours when they take on the emotions of everyone else and with no clear outlet 45:47--Chad discusses a growth path that he is currently on 46:46--Shay starts with her growth path and Amanda follows (they encourage everyone to check out the CPEnneagram with Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes) 49:10--Shay talks about her meditation of a burning bush The Big Self Leadership Accelerator is open! Each of us believes something so deeply that our reality is completely distorted by that belief. The nine Enneagram types each have a core fixation—a lens through which we view the world. And around that fixation, we build a series of ideas that keep us stuck. Claudio Naranjo, a pioneer of the Enneagram system of personality, provocatively called these the "crazy ideas" that each type holds. So what are yours? In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes discuss the "crazy" ideas that we all need to overcome to develop fully and get out of our own way. They use Naranjo's language to provide continuity and context to this work. They would like to make clear that they are in no way referring to any symptoms or manifestations of mental illness, but rather, a battle that all of us have regardless of mental health. Whether you are a professional trying to use the Enneagram in coaching or therapy, or just can't seem to land on the right Enneagram type, you know that typing is not easy. The Enneagram system of personality and the nine types hold enormous complexity. Given the Enneagram's recent increase in popularity and the influx of new "experts" in the field, mistyping may even be a growing phenomenon. Unfortunately, the consequences can be dire. Types can have completely different growth paths and if we get our type wrong, we may be doing the wrong work for our personal development. If you are a professional, the consequences and ethical implications are even more significant. In this episode, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes draw on their decades of experience conducting typing interviews and reveal what we often get wrong about typing and how we can do better. Ask good questions, and then actually listen to the answers.4. Be really aware of your own biases. Beatrice discloses her hilarious self-preservation four bias.3. Ask good questions and know what questions don't help you. For example, don't ask people 'how loyal are you' to get at 6ness. Everyone says they're loyal!2. Combine humility with experience. Do a lot of practice. 1. Know the Subtypes. Otherwise, you'll miss the social 7, or the self-preservation 3, etc.Uranio's top 5:5. Practice being present and receptive and train yourself to get rid of confirmation bias.4. Don't ask rubbish questions. (I've paraphrased).3. Embrace the Enneagram's complexity. Also, remember that some interviewees might not trust you. 2. Humility.1. Study hard - like Rez - and do lots of typing interviews.
