With the midterm elections less than 80 days away, Democrats appear confident that historical trends and current polling will deliver control of Congress. But several factors could complicate that outcome, including the course of the Iran war, Republican redistricting, Donald Trump's campaign war chest, recent primary results, and questions about the reliability of polling. The growing influence of Democratic Socialists within the Democratic Party could also reshape the race as voters get a closer look at their positions on policing, immigration, energy, foreign policy, women's sports, the Supreme Court, the Electoral College, and other major issues. Despite expectations of Republican losses, control of both the House and Senate remains up for grabs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Iran is facing an increasingly severe economic and military squeeze as sanctions, financial isolation, trade restrictions, and attacks on its military infrastructure cut the country off from the global economy. The strategy resembles an economic “Anaconda Plan,” gradually depriving Iran of oil revenue, foreign currency, industrial parts, weapons, fuel, and access to international markets while negotiations and military action continue. Iran is betting that it can withstand the pressure long enough for the approaching U.S. midterm elections to constrain the Trump administration, but the country is losing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic output and revenue each day while its military capabilities continue to deteriorate. The Strait of Hormuz may also become less valuable as Gulf states expand pipelines and alternative export routes through the Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, and potentially the Mediterranean. As Iran's economy weakens, its military shrinks, and alternative oil routes reduce its leverage over global shipping, time may increasingly favor the United States rather than Tehran. The proposed movement shares much of its agenda with the Trump administration but breaks sharply over foreign policy, the Iran war, Israel, and American involvement overseas. Personal disputes with Trump, growing divisions within MAGA, criticism of AIPAC and Israel, and controversial rhetoric surrounding Jewish influence have also become part of the emerging fracture. A third-party challenge could ultimately act as a spoiler in 2028, dividing the MAGA coalition and hurting the Republican candidate attempting to succeed Donald Trump. It's Monday, August 10th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Sudanese armed executed pastor and 6 others extrajudicially A pastor in Sudan's Nuba Mountains was executed extrajudicially, along with six other people, after members of an armed faction arrested him at his church residence in the town of Heban, reports The Christian Post. The Rev. Adil Jangoul, of the Sudanese Episcopal Church, was detained on July 23 inside the church compound in Heban's Erie neighborhood, where he lived, reports Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Members of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement-North, an armed group in the region, seized his money and arrested him without incident. However, his body was later found on a road alongside those of six other people, all from the Otoro ethnic group, most of whom are Christian. All seven had been killed in extrajudicial executions. Christian Solidarity Worldwide President Mervyn Thomas said he was deeply troubled by the rising bloodshed, some of it apparently ethnically motivated. He called the killings especially perplexing because the Nuba Mountains had long been a place of peaceful co-existence, even through Sudan's dictatorship and the civil war. Send a polite, 3-sentence note to the Sudanese Ambassador to America, Mohamed Idris, asking that their government do more to protect the Sudanese Christians. Send it to: 2210 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008 or email: consular@sudanembassy.org. James 4:17 says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do, and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” Senate Confirms Todd Blanche as Attorney General President Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche, was confirmed in a late night vote in the Senate after a handful of fellow Republicans reconsidered their opposition, reports The Epoch Times. Blanche was confirmed in a 50–49 vote in the early hours of August 8th, with Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voting in opposition. The deciding vote was cast by GOP Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who announced on Friday that he believed Blanche was the best option that Trump would put forward. GOP Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky did not vote because he is still recuperating from an illness. Fauci subpoenaed by 3 GOP AGs for profiting from COVID guidance Following two disastrous U.S. Senate hearings in as many weeks and publication of his personal diary, Dr. Anthony Fauci has now been subpoenaed by three Republican state attorneys general seeking to determine whether he personally profited from guidance he issued during the COVID-19 pandemic, reports LifeSiteNews.com. While President Joe Biden gave the COVID kahuna a blanket pardon stretching from 2014 to the final day of his presidency, that pardon protects Fauci only from federal prosecution, leaving him exposed to potential legal actions from the states.  Last Wednesday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that his state has teamed up with West Virginia and Louisiana to investigate “awards, professional opportunities, financial incentives, grants, and COVID-19 guidance that impacted Florida businesses and consumers.” Uthmeier said that Fauci's diaries “detail substantial awards” connected to the Sunshine State, including a $900,000 Dan David Foundation prize. The Florida Attorney General also cited other troubling ways Fauci may have personally profited from his handling of COVID, such as “offers of named professorships and book deals, board positions, private foundation partnerships, and other professional and financial opportunities concurrent with his federal role and public recommendations impacting Florida.”  The once self-proclaimed “most famous scientist in the world” who obtained secular sainthood status during the pandemic has faced a sudden reversal of fortune this summer. In the words of Victor Davis Hanson, “The Fauci files reveal not just a sociopathic narcissist but also a pathological schizophrenic.” And Fox News host Laura Ingraham alleged that during his time as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, Fauci was “a liar, a megalomaniac, a phony, and a total narcissist all rolled into one.” Senator Fetterman takes issue with anti-Israel Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Appearing on CNN, Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, one of the few Democrats who supports Israel, took issue with Abdul El-Sayed, the newly selected Muslim Democratic nominee to the U.S. Senate from Michigan. Listen. FETTERMAN: “I can't come together with someone if you are willing to embrace people that that loves Hamas or that thinks America deserved 9/11. I think that's reasonable. I think that's the reasonable view. That's not a big tent situation. There are things that are unacceptable to have these views as a Democrat, I think.” Inspiring CEO gives company to charity after working 58 years And finally, Grady-White Boats market their 18 to 45-foot-long vessels as the “finest boats ever crafted” which is quite the statement. For 58 years, Eddie Smith Jr., Grady-White's ex-CEO, worked 80-100 hour workweeks to salvage the near-bankrupt boat builder and turn it into a 9-figure revenue generator that will now power philanthropy in perpetuity, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. That's because Smith turned down multiple offers around half a billion dollars in order to pass controlling stakes in Grady-White Boats to a “purpose trust” that will operate it according to his values and convert its bottom line into community service, conservation, and other philanthropic causes. Profiled by Fortune Magazine, Smith said he was inspired by entrepreneurs like Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, who also turned the brand into a financial engine for conservation. He said, “I just think that those of us that are fortunate enough to be in a position to help others…It's really a gift to me to be able to do what I do.” Born to a father who was orphaned at age 10 during the Great Depression, Smith Jr. grew up near the poverty line. The first break was when his father worked enough odd jobs to start a mail order business. The son, who remembers eating SPAM 3 times a week, then lied about his age to get a job on a paper route, before becoming the first in his family to graduate from college at the University of North Carolina in 1965. Finding Grady-White Boats in a near-bankrupt state, Smith Jr., who described himself as having an “entrepreneurial itch” to prove himself, borrowed some money and took over the business, forsaking golf, his favorite pastime, for over 30 years. Today, revenues average over $100 million per year. When he was given an award known as the Order of the Tar Heel, the highest honor in North Carolina by the state's Labor Commissioner, Eddie Smith was characteristically humble. Listen. SMITH: “Any honor that I am fortunate enough to receive, I receive on behalf of all these wonderful people. You're looking out right there at some of the best craftsmen and most dedicated workers, not only in North Carolina, but I would say in the world. Any accolades that come my way come my way because of them and what they've accomplished here at Grady White.” 1 Peter 5:6 says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, August 10th, in the year of our Lord 2026. The policy has sparked criticism over its burden on longtime homeowners, retirees, and families whose homes have appreciated in value despite modest incomes. Victor Davis Hanson: Trump must set up an Iranian government-in-exile

The Times of Israel Daily Briefing

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2026 50:52

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Lazar Focus. Each Friday, join host diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman for a deep dive into what's behind the news that spins the globe. This week, we want to take a broad look at the direction of US foreign policy. How does domestic politics affect America's ability to wage war? Is a moderate bump in gas prices enough to keep US President Donald Trump from achieving his goals against Iran? What changes after the midterms? We also want to examine the nose-dive in support for Israel among Democrats, and the rise in antisemitism on the right wing of the Republican Party. Prof. Victor Davis Hanson is one of the most prolific and well-known American historians. Trained as a classicist, he has written extensively on ancient and modern warfare. He also has unique insights into the currents driving US politics. Hanson said that midterm elections often warp foreign policy. The incumbent party almost always loses, and with the Republicans holding a thin lead in the House of Representatives, they are in serious danger of losing the House. If that happens, said Hanson, Trump will face two years of impeachment hearings. In addition, said Hanson, Americans are willing to support military action, but run out of patience quickly. "They don't mind the violence," he said. "They don't mind, to be frank, how many people you kill. They don't want to lose any Americans, but they want it short, and out of the Middle East especially." Hanson pointed out that Democratic Socialists have only won a few elections in deep blue states thus far, and they are not the inevitable future of the Democratic Party. Both parties have had fringe outliers that damage their chances, only to have course corrections in subsequent cycles. What is unique about the Democratic Socialists phenomenon, he says, is that it is combined with an Islamist element: "What unites them is they hate Western civilization. They hate capitalism, even though they do quite well by it. They hate Israel. And I'll be candid. I think they hate Jews as well." He argued that on the right, the Republican Party and broader conservative movement are pushing back on their antisemitic fringe. Vance, said Hanson, is "brilliant." He sees that Marco Rubio's star is rising and is trying to find a way to position himself as the party's frontrunner. Vance's way to do so, said Hanson, is to appeal to the disaffected working-class whites he grew up around. On Iran, Hanson stressed that the people leading the regime are fanatics. What the US should do is create a transitional government in exile in a nearby Arab country and send frozen regime funds to that body. "Sow the seeds of dissension and let it work like that," Hanson urged. "But I don't think we need to talk to them anymore. It's completely futile." Overall, he said Israel is in a strong position diplomatically and militarily, while Iran is weaker than many realize. Russia and China are also slipping economically and demographically, while the US is squeezing them out of places like South America. Hanson argued that prioritizing the Palestinian cause is a "Western elite fetish in Europe and the United States." Finally, with one of the world's leading classics scholars on the show, how could we not discuss Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey? Hanson called it "a spectacularly produced film, special effects, and he encouraged people to take an interest in Homer. But "it's really not Homer's Odyssey. I would call it a diverse, equitable and inclusive Odyssey, a DEI Odyssey." Lazar Focus can be found on all podcast platforms. The strategy is simple: reshape the systems that influence how people think, vote, and view the world. Jesse Kelly examines why communism remains a threat to the foundations of American life. Across Latin America, governments are becoming more aligned with the United States while Chinese influence continues to recede. Europe is dramatically increasing defense spending, strengthening its borders, and rethinking energy policies after years of dependence and underinvestment. Russia is weaker economically and militarily, Iran has suffered devastating losses to its military and nuclear infrastructure, and China faces growing economic and strategic challenges as its global ambitions encounter new obstacles. Many of these changes stem from Donald Trump's willingness to abandon traditional diplomacy in favor of an unpredictable negotiating style that pressured both allies and adversaries. NATO members are committing more resources to their own defense, America's strategic position has strengthened across multiple regions, and longtime rivals face greater economic and military pressure than they did just a few years ago. Whether history ultimately judges Trump's approach favorably remains to be seen, but the global balance of power has shifted in ways that increasingly favor the United States. Radical Islam and the socialist left have formed an unlikely political alliance despite their profound ideological differences. Both movements share a deep hostility toward Western civilization, capitalism, Israel, and liberal democracy, creating a coalition driven by common enemies rather than common beliefs. The history and core principles of Islam, Marxism, socialism, and communism reveal where these ideologies fundamentally conflict and where they increasingly overlap. Their opposing views on religion, government, individual rights, and society are contrasted alongside the shared political goals that have brought them together in modern Western politics. Anthony Fauci's private diary presents a starkly different account of the COVID pandemic from the one given to the American public. The records reveal his awareness that the lab-leak theory was credible, his private agreement with arguments against school closures, and his fixation on media attention, awards, money, and personal influence. Fauci publicly portrayed himself as the embodiment of science while dismissing opposing experts and exercising enormous power over federal research funding. His private admissions, public contradictions, involvement with gain-of-function research, and support from the media turned his pursuit of authority and fame into a modern Greek tragedy—one that severely damaged his legacy and public trust in American institutions. Victor Davis Hanson: What Critics Get Wrong About Homer's ‘Odyssey'

Homer's Odyssey was not written as a straightforward account of the Bronze Age. It emerged from centuries of oral storytelling that preserved faint memories of Mycenaean civilization, absorbed the customs of the Greek Dark Ages, and incorporated warfare, agriculture, politics, and language from Homer's own time. The collapse that followed the Trojan War transformed ruined palaces, forgotten tombs, and distant rulers into stories of Cyclopes, demigods, and legendary heroes. That complicated history also challenges criticism of Christopher Nolan's adaptation, since Homer's poem itself blends multiple eras rather than presenting a historically exact picture of ancient Greece. Harry Enten is flabbergasted that new polling shows a majority of Americans don't trust what democrats are saying about the war in Iran and question the left's narrative about the entire conflict. Trust in the democrat party is at an all-time low as their corresponding news networks fail to cover the Anthony Fauci diary story dropped by Senator Rand Paul. RFK Jr drops bombshell news about Fauci's adverse reaction to the jab that he kept from the public. Victor Davis Hanson is not one for tirades but the stream-of-consciousness scathing the conservative thought leader gave Fauci is worth all of us hearing.
