No one is an island. We all depend on each other in critical, often tangled ways. And when I say "we" and "each other" I don't just mean humans. Yes, we humans rely on other humans. But we also rely on bees, yeasts, dogs, bacteria, and countless other creatures big and small. These interspecies dependencies—or mutualisms, as biologists call them—have deflected and inflected our history. And there's no doubt they will also inflect our future.  My guest today is Dr. Rob Dunn. Rob is Professor of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University, where he studies the creatures and ecologies all around us—in our homes, in our foods, in our belly buttons. He's the author of eight books, including, most recently, The Call of the Honeyguide: What Science Tells Us about How to Live Well with the Rest of Life. This book is the focus of our conversation today. Rob and I talk about the idea of mutualism—in which two or more species benefit each other—and how human life is sustained by mutualisms all the way down. We consider how the benefits of mutualism are measured—whether in terms of biological fitness, or longevity, or pleasure. We talk about the best-documented cases of humans collaborating with other species to find honey or hunt fish. We consider how our liaisons with yeasts have shaped human history—and how we might even say that yeasts domesticated us. We linger on our relationships with dogs and cats and the benefits we get from them, some obvious and some less so. Finally, we talk about what it would mean to more fully embrace our mutualisms, what it would mean to create what Rob calls "a less lonely future." Along the way, Rob and I talk about cheese, worms, and maggots; bread, beer, and honey; face mites and armpits; parasites, inquilines, and commensals; what sauerkraut does to our immune systems; honeyguides and dolphins, leopards and house cats; morbid curiosity; and how dogs might give us a kind of access to our subconscious.  This is a fun one folks. Domenico Scandella, mer känd som Menocchio (1532-1599), var mjölnare i byn Montereale i Friulien, nordöstra Italien. Genom samtal och läsning av icke auktoriserade biblar, koranen och fantasifulla reseskildringar hade han utvecklat en egenartad syn på världen och Gud – idéer han mer än gärna delade med sin omgivning.I Menocchios skapelseberättelse hade världen uppstått ur en ostmassa där maskarna blev änglar. I motreformationens Italien fanns inget utrymme för fritänkare som Menocchio, som var mycket kritisk till kyrkan och dess prelater. Trots varningar från familj och vänner kunde han inte låta bli att utförligt redogöra för sina uppfattningar inför inkvisitorn samt knappt kunde tro att Menecchio tänkt ut allting själv.I detta avsnitt av podden Historia Nu samtalar programledaren Urban Lindstedt med författaren, historikern och dokumentärfilmaren Maja Hagerman om Menocchios världsbild i det sena 1500-talets Italien.Genom inkvisitionens rättegångsprotokoll kunde den italienske historikern Carlo Ginzburg komma nära Menocchios tankevärld i sin banbrytande bok Osten och maskarna (1976), som nyligen utkommit i ny svensk översättning. Boken visar hur folklig kultur, tryckt kunskap och religiös kontroll kolliderade i det tidigmoderna Europa – och hur en enskild individ kunde tänka självständigt, men också riskera livet för det.Menocchio utmärkte sig genom sin vilja att öppet resonera om religion, skapelsen och samhällets ordning. Han diskuterade gärna med grannar, präster och främlingar och blev känd som en person med avvikande och provocerande idéer. Det var inte ett enskilt uttalande som väckte inkvisitionens intresse, utan hans ihärdiga spridande av sina tankar.Kärnan i Menocchios världsbild var en radikalt okonventionell skapelseberättelse. Han beskrev hur världen uppstått ur ett slags urkaos, likt mjölk som blir till ost, ur vilken maskar spontant framträder. Dessa maskar identifierade han med änglarna – och i vissa versioner även med Gud själv. Hos Menocchio var Gud inte en allsmäktig och avlägsen skapare, utan en del av naturens utveckling.Hans gudsbild var starkt naturalistisk och antihierarkisk. Han förnekade jungfrufödseln, ifrågasatte Kristi gudomlighet och avvisade kyrkans sakrament, helgonkult och prästerskapets särställning. För honom var religion främst en moralisk fråga: att leva rättfärdigt, inte förtrycka de fattiga och behandla andra med rättvisa.Han förespråkade också religiös tolerans. Menocchio menade att olika folk trodde på Gud på olika sätt och att ingen religion hade monopol på sanningen – en farlig tanke i motreformationens Italien, där trosenhet betraktades som grundläggande för samhällsordningen.Menocchio tillhörde inte samhällets allra fattigaste, utan var en relativt självständig hantverkare och småbrukare. Han kunde läsa och skriva, hade innehaft lokala förtroendeuppdrag och deltog aktivt i byns sociala liv.Ginzburg visar att Menocchios idévärld inte kan reduceras till enkel folktro eller direkt påverkan från enskilda böcker. Dr. Tomas Vincente is a scholar of ancient religion, magic and esotericism. His past work explores the emergence of Christian monotheism and the resulting decline of the chthonic cults of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. He is dedicated to recovering the integrity of this archaic spirituality of blood and fire, which has been demonised by the Abrahamic religions for two millennia. In the show we discuss his work The Faceless God. The book has a triple focus—Lovecraftian, Egyptian and Sabbatic—which may seem bizarre at first glance. Through an initiated reading of Lovecraft's fiction, relating especially to the figure of Nyarlathotep, certain hitherto unexplored connections are revealed between European witch lore and the Egyptian mysteries of Osiris and Anubis. The claim that there was a germ of truth beneath the diabolical stereotypes and accusations of European witchcraft was advanced long ago by Margaret Murray, who argued that witchcraft was an organised cult of pagan origin, which had somehow survived the processes of Christianization. Dr Vincente's argument is much more subtle, and closer in spirit to the more recent research of Carlo Ginzburg. He would not speak of an organised witch cult, but rather of diverse and analogous survivals of shamanistic practice, which carried forward certain symbolic and ritual elements of archaic and pre-Christian origin. The most novel aspect of his argument lies in the unearthing of the deep symbolic resonances between the lore of witchcraft, relating to the black man and the Goat of Mendes, and the archaic fertility cult of the ram-headed Banebdjedet, who was a totemistic representation of Osiris—or more precisely Osiris in union with Ra in his netherworld aspect. In the Plus show we get into similarities between the Dark Man and the King of the Fairies. We discuss the importance of art and artists and what they bring back from the dark womb. We get into why this experience happens? What is the point of it? La brujería fue un sistema de creencias cuyo supuesto significado procede, fundamentalmente, de las actas de los procesos de la Inquisición. Por confesiones bajo tortura, emergió el estereotipo de las brujas en los aquelarres; las reuniones nocturnas en los bosques en las que las hechiceras se unían con el demonio para propagar el mal y la oscuridad. Investigaciones actuales, como la del historiador italiano Carlo Ginzburg, sostiene otra tesis: que la brujería era en realidad una práctica mágica para catalizar la fertilización de la tierra y el éxito de las cosechas, desde un posible trasfondo chamánico.
