As a proud mother, Dorothy was all ready to share very specific stories of when she thought June "should listen to her mother," including her junior high musical instrument selection, Orange Bowl Queen/King Orange Bowl Game in Miami, taking a job at the "nascent" CNN news network and not marrying her first husband. "Greetings From Paradise" began as a screen play and it turned into a gift from June to Coral Gables. It is a one act, 80 minute play written by June Thomson Morris, making it's debut at Miracle Theater on Miracle Mile. The roaring 20's happened big time in Coral Gables and the Miami area. At that time, the Prohibition was not taken seriously at all. June says "the booze was pouring in with miles of unprotected coastlines between Bermuda and Cuba." 1925 the great Florida Land Boom -no more income tax nor inheritance tax so everyone from up north, who had money, flocked to the Miami area.In September of 1926, a hurricane leveled Miami and left a path of destructionJune's Grandmother, Lucy, was there and she experienced the loss of all that had been created and developed because of this one horrific storm. Dorothy as a proud mother, explains that by writing this play, June has done something that no one else has ever done. It's the first time that anyone's written a historically accurate telling of the story of Miami.Coral Gables is also dedicating a park in Dorothy's honor. It's going to be the first theme park in Coral Gables and named "Dorothy." Dorothy was raised in Peekskill, New York where in the 1800's, L. Frank Baum, the author of the Wizard of Oz, attended the Peekskill Military Academy for two years. When L. Frank Baum was looking for his new school, a gentleman told him to "follow the yellow brink road" and you'll find the academy. On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their investigation into the photos and screenshots found on Stephen Smith's phone, learning more about what the Hampton, S.C., teen's life was like leading up to his mysterious death in July 2015. Mandy and Liz revisit two interviews with South Carolina Highway Patrol that — with new context — shed more light on his very last night and on what evidence SLED might have to help them retrace Stephen's steps. Plus, listeners will finally get to hear Stephen's own voice from a video Mandy and Liz found on his iPad... Also on the show, Luna Shark is taking on a new case! This May, Michael Colucci will stand trial — again — for the 2015 murder of his wife, Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci. Michael — a wealthy, prominent and well-connected Charleston-area man — insists that his wife killed herself with a garden hose. His attorney Andy Savage (yes, that one) even suggests that she might have tripped and fallen into the hose and hanged herself. SLED Agent David Owen — remember him from Alex Murdaugh's trial? — and the Attorney General say Michael strangled Sara to death in a fit of anger. This case features a lot of familiar themes and players from the Murdaugh trial, including the twists and turns that seem to have come right off the pages of a novel... On Tuesday, we published one of our Top Five Favorite episodes of Cup of Justice! We interviewed Emmy Award Winning Journalist and TV Host Tamron Hall. Tamron was on the TODAY Show in Mandy's early days of journalism and she deeply admired how she handled stories. Does the name Ernie Fields ring a bell? Joining Tavis at the top of this hour is Emmy Award-winning broadcast news journalist Carmen Fields to share the fascinating narrative behind her new book, "Going Back to T-Town: The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band." (June 2023) In a compelling exploration, Carmen sheds light on her father, Ernie Fields, an often-overlooked luminary in the jazz world. While not a household name, Ernie Fields played a vital role in the history of jazz as the leader of a territory band, akin to contemporaries such as Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie - all of whom were his friends. Her book unpacks Ernie's journey through the early jazz era to the 1960s, highlighting the challenges and triumphs he faced while navigating the racial segregation of the Jim Crow era, ultimately unveiling a captivating yet unsung chapter in music history.

In this episode with Na Eng, we discuss: - How being born in the killing fields in Cambodia shaped her entire identity. - How the generosity of strangers helped her beat the odds. - What inspired her to be a journalist, and how her background as a refugee helps her to share stories of people dealing with incredibly challenging circumstances. - Why the model minority myth became one of the dominant narratives around accomplishments, and what we can learn from it. - How you can use storytelling to share a person's humanity and change the world. - Why there's a shaming of families on public assistance, and how we can reframe the narrative to see that public assistance is given not just to individuals who are struggling, but major corporations and others. - How she won an Emmy for sharing how regressive state taxes benefit the rich and make the poor even more vulnerable. - How generational trauma can lead to genetic alterations, and what we can do to heal them. - Why it's important to give your younger self more hugs, empathy, and love. Welcome to season 3, episode 4 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. It is with great excitement that I announce this week's fast-fashion-fighting, powerhouse of a young changemaker Tiyasha Sarkar. Tiyasha is a high school junior in who is actively positively disrupting the status quo in order to expose the negative effects of the fast fashion industry. She is involved in a program at school that is focused on taking action against fast fashion by hosting highly successful thrift fairs and engaging in outreach with a worker's rights organization, Labor Behind the Label.Tiyasha Sarkar aims to inform people on the effects of their choices by revealing the deeper impacts behind seemingly simple concepts such as shopping at clothing stores around the mall. She defines fast fashion as “the creation of low quality products in an imitation of high fashion products”, explaining that it is “built on exploitation of the environment, mental health, and labor rights”. Throughout the interview she calls out popular brands such as Zara for their role as the spitting image of a fast-fashion corporation. By outlining the true cost of our decisions regarding clothing, Tiyasha is able to arm the public with the knowledge and motivation to practice more conscious clothing consumption.Tiyasha draws attention to several crucial issues surrounding the fast fashion industry such as its impact on mental health, specifically that of women, as it perpetuates the idea of a “perfect body”. This act of creating a box for all people to fit into excludes the majority of the population and contributes to unrealistic beauty standards. She brings light to the situation by suggesting increased diversity among the industry, specifically mannequins of different sizes and advertisement of groups such as the LGBTQ+ community. She then explains the environmental effects of fast fashion by commenting on our overconsumption and overproduction as well as the presence of microplastics in our waterways, following up with jaw-dropping statistics to back her claims. Tiyasha also directly addresses one of the most horrific aspects of the fast fashion industry which is the lack of labor rights among garment workers. She firmly declares, “clothes cannot be based on the exploitation of children”, a statement that we as consumers must not take lightly.Tiyasha advises us not only to stay informed on the happenings of the fast fashion industry on a large scale but to take matters into our own hands through practicing mindful consumption, upcycling, and mending our clothes before buying new. To get involved with the movement directly, follow her Instagram @soleburyteach2serve and stay tuned and stay tuned for the next thrift fair coming up between the months of May and June. Listen in to hear a lesson that Tiyasha has learned that she wants to share with both young and seasoned changemakers. Do you have a story to share? With Diane Macedo, Emmy Award-Winning Journalist on ABC News Do you typically have trouble falling asleep or wake up in the middle of the night and lie awake for hours? Getting a good night's sleep can be a major challenge for some people. If left untreated, it can possibly lead to long-term health risks such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or a weakened immune system. A variety of things can disrupt our sleep or keep us awake at night. Stress is a big factor, but also things like too much light or noise or what we eat and drink can interfere with our ability to sleep. Conditions such as sleep apnea or acid reflux can also affect the quality of our sleep. My guest today, Diane Macedo, is an Emmy award-winning journalist. In addition to being the daytime anchor on ABC News, Diane frequently appears on Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight. Diane's job as a reporter can lead to erratic hours, and her sleep is frequently disrupted by her work schedule. When Diane developed chronic insomnia and was told that in order to get more sleep she might have to quit her dream job, she was determined to find another way to treat it and put her investigative skills to work. In her research, Diane learned that chronic insomnia is incredibly common; affecting as many as 30‒60% of adults. A lot of people assume once a bad sleeper, always a bad sleeper. Contrary to popular belief, insomnia and other sleep disorders may be learned behaviors that are treatable. Thankfully, Diane found ways to treat her own sleep issues that didn't rely on sleeping pills or quitting her job. Her book, The Sleep Fix, includes solutions for people with sleep issues and disorders to get a better night's sleep. She shares some of those tips with us today. What You'll Hear on This Episode: How did Diane's work schedule disrupt her sleep? How our biology affects our circadian rhythm. How much sleep do we need? Do we need more sleep as we get older? What kinds of overnight jobs did Diane have? How does insomnia differ from sleep deprivation? When do we get the best quality sleep? How can we adjust temperature and light to get better sleep? Can melatonin and other sleeping pills be helpful? What is it like working on Good Morning America? The goal and the message of Diane's book The Sleep Fix. Quotes: “When we try to force ourselves to sleep at a time that our body is not ready to, we can create something called conditioned arousal.” — Diane “If you spend enough time awake and worried in bed, your brain will start to associate bed with the place that you are supposed to be awake and worried.” — Diane “It is part of our biology; when our circadian rhythm starts to send us wake signals and when it then starts to send us sleep signals at night.” — Diane Today's Takeaway: Sleep deprivation and insomnia are at an all-time high these days with an estimated 30‒60% of the population suffering from insomnia. If you frequently find yourself feeling tired or out of sorts during the day, even if you went to bed early the night before, then you may be suffering from sleep deprivation. If you're struggling with insomnia, sleep apnea, or any other sleep disorders, then you want to read Diane's book The Sleep Fix. Also, be sure to see your doctor! In trying to understand the cause of her own inability to sleep, Diane wrote a comprehensive book that explains why we can't sleep and details the relationship between the various causes behind insomnia and other sleep disturbances. Best of all, the book gives concrete step-by-step solutions on how to diagnose a variety of sleep issues and how to correct them. There are so many reasons why we can't sleep and Diane's book provides helpful suggestions for each of them. It's important that if your problems persist you seek medical advice. Remember that every single day is a gift, and having a healthy mind and body means getting enough sleep. So why not give yourself the gift of a better night's sleep by doing all that you can to create an optimum sleep environment and routine for you. Emmy Award-Winning Journalist, Kennedy Dendy, was born and raised in Dallas, Texas with big dreams for her bright future. At an early age she was naturally drawn to the field of news media, often mimicking the show hosts she watched on television. Still driven by her passion for sharing stories, Kennedy graduated from Baylor University with a journalism major/film and digital media minor in December of 2019. After graduating she left her hometown and comfort zone to move to the East Coast to work as a weekend Morning Anchor/Producer and a news reporter for KEZI 9 News in Eugene, Oregon.Kennedy has always held close Proverbs 3:5-6, a verse from the Bible about trusting and submitting your plans to the Lord, but she never would have guessed that in this new season her faith would be refined by fire, quite literally. In this conversation with Kennedy she shares about her experience with KEZI 9 News in Eugene in the middle of the 2021 Oregon fires, winning a beautiful, but quite heavy, Emmy Award, and what is happening in the new season of her life in her new anchor position with Action News Jax (CBS47 & FOX30) in Jacksonville, Florida.Kennedy's trust in having God handle all of her decision making is a major encouragement to me and I pray it is for you too!Official show notes available atwww.kohliebrowning.comMusic, "Where the Light Dances" by Yamareewww.instagram.com/yamareeofficial/"Wrong" by Dan Henig"Jindupe" by Lauren Dunski
