Why do kids freak out, and how can adults guide them through it without just saying, "Stop it?” Dr. Carla Naumburg, clinical social worker and author of How to Stop Losing Your Shit with Your Kids, joins Gabe Howard to unpack the science of emotional outbursts. Learn the surprising reasons behind freak-outs, how to manage them with humor (learn about acronyms FART and BuRP), and why telling kids to calm down often backfires. This episode is packed with practical advice for parents, teachers, and anyone who works with kids, helping them navigate tough moments with empathy and skill. “Let's say you are a kid and you have a parent who stays 100% perfect and calm and smiley and always gives you what you want. When you go out in the real world, you're not going to be able to deal with life at all because that's never going to be recreated, right? And so, when your parent loses their temper with you from time to time, packs you a lunch you don't like, forgets to pick you up at school and you're left there for half an hour. When your parent does X, Y, and Z that are considered less than perfect parenting, what you learn is that people aren't perfect, and that's okay. That you can handle things not going the way you want, and you'll be okay. It actually makes kids more resilient.” ~Carla Naumburg, PhD To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the episode webpage. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
Are you a shitty parent? Or do you ever think you might be? Parenting today is so hard, and there are so many models of 'perfect parenting' available on social media that we can compare ourselves against that provide 'evidence' that we're not doing it right. Things can get even more difficult when we believe in respectful parenting, because we have a model for what we know we want parenting to be like - and every time we fall short of that ideal, the voice is there: "You don't know what you're doing." "You'll never be able to do it right." "You're a shitty parent." My guest today, Carla Naumburg, is the author of the bestselling book How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids, which was conveniently released just before a global pandemic started when we suddenly all started losing our shit with our kids. Now she's back with a new book: You Are Not A Sh*tty Parent which helps us to understand: Where these stories about ourselves come from How we can stop believing these stories Ways to treat both ourselves and our children with more compassion Carla was kind enough to send an advance copy of the book to a member of my community who said that she would read a sentence in it and think: “But you don't know me; I actually AM a shitty parent!” ...and then in the next sentence it was almost like Carla had read her mind and was prepared to address the member's precise concern. So if you ever feel anxious about your ability to parent in a way that's aligned with your values and think it's all about your failures, Carla has ideas to help. Please note that some swearing is inevitable when you're talking about Carla's books but apart from that the conversation was remarkably restrained on the language front! Should we be thinking about social media as risky behavior, equal to drinking alcohol, doing drugs, unprotected sex and operating heavy machinery? Sciencedirect.com defines risky behavior as: “Risk taking is any consciously, or non-consciously controlled behavior with a perceived uncertainty about its outcome, and/or about its possible benefits or costs for the physical, economic or psycho-social well-being of oneself or others.” In other words, it's behavior that can cause harm to yourself and others. My guest Bailey Parnell is an expert in keeping our kids and us safe on social media and brings a wealth of research and information to the topic. Our kids are especially vulnerable on social media for many reasons. So where do we start? First, we need to take a look at ourselves and how we consume social media. Do we use it to numb ourselves, to compare, or is it a fun pastime? Our kids are watching us so let's make sure we take a moment to notice how, when and where we interact with it, and lead by example. It's important that from the moment our kids have access to a device, we start talking about the risks to their safety and others. As our kids get older and want to be connected on social platforms, it's important to have boundaries and talk to them about what drives social media and how powerful and damaging social currency can be. Bailey says the research shows that how we respond to what we see on social media is dependent on how good we are already feeling about ourselves. So if we are feeling low, it can make you feel lower and if you feel good, you aren't as affected. This means we need to invest in our kids' sense of self (and our own) outside of the online world. In this episode, Bailey and I talk about: How teens are wired for comparison and risk-taking behavior How girls are more frequently targeted for harassment How to talk to your kids using a harm reduction approach App suggestions for parents to help you navigate the social media world. Bailey has generously given three helpful resources to the Parent Toolbox: 1. Having "The Talk" With Your Kids... About Social Media (12 Examples and strategies) 2. 12 Strategies to Improve Social Media Use 3. Social Media Addiction Assessment Download these resources from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Bailey Parnell Bailey Parnell is the Founder & CEO of SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company, and was named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Bailey is a TEDx speaker with over 3 million views, an award-winning digital marketer, and a businesswoman with a talent for helping people develop the skills they need for success. Today your host, Katherine Jones hosts Author Carla Nauman. With today's parenting culture of unattainable expectations and incessant demands, it is no wonder so many of us suffer from Sh*tty Parent Syndrome —the perception that one is a crummy parent—leaving us feeling confused and insecure about how to raise our children. Enter Carla Naumburg, author of the bestselling How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids, who flips the script on this destructive mind-set in her new book: You Are Not a Sh*tty Parent: How to Practice Self-Compassion and Give Yourself a Break (Workman Publishing; on sale: September 27, 2022; paperback). Showing how great parenting is grounded in true self-compassion, Naumburg teaches readers a simple, evidence-based practice that reveals how to stop judging yourself and start treating yourself with acceptance and understanding. The strategies of self-compassion—connection, creativity, and kindness—are the keys to giving yourself a break and embracing your best qualities as a parent. About the Author: Carla Naumburg, PhD, LICSW, is a clinical social worker, and mother. She's the author of five non-fiction books, including her international bestseller, How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids (Workman, 2019), as well as You Are Not a Sh*tty Parent, and the forthcoming How to Stop Freaking Out, the (completely swear-free) middle-grade adaptation of How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids. Carla's writing has appeared in a variety of online and print publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Mindful Magazine, Slate.com, Psychology Today, WBUR's Cognoscenti Blog, Brain, Child, Motherwell, Parents.com, PsychCentral, and Today Moms. Carla completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Middlebury College, a master's degree in social work from Smith College, and a PhD in clinical social work from Simmons College in Boston. Carla grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Bay Area of California and she currently lives outside of Boston with her husband and two daughters. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tntbsmedia/message
Carla Naumburg, a clinical social worker, mother, and author of five non-fiction books, including her international bestseller, How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids is back to the show. Have you ever thought that you were a bad parent, doing a shitty job, failing your kids or just doubting whther you were doing it "right"? Parents feel that way. And there are real good reasons for that. We talk about that on the show. In addition, Carla shares tangible steps for how to use each to help parents reduce their anxiety, trust their instincts, move past the guilt and become a calmer, more confident parent. Which, in the end, benefits your child as much as you. Great parenting is not the same thing as perfect parenting. Great parenting starts with true self-compassion, the kind that means you don't judge yourself. Harnessing this self-compassion is the key to giving yourself a break and embracing your best qualities as a parent. There is no subject—not Trump, not abortion, not immigration, not taxes-–that is more contentious than the one we tackle today: parenting. This subject has particular urgency because my wife is pregnant! As are two of my producers. But you don't need to be pregnant to be curious about the following: What is the right way to raise kids who become good, responsible, kind adults? Can we blame our problems as adults on our parents? What about Or do parenting styles not really matter? Is it nature that determines just about everything? That–and a thousand more questions–are what we discuss on today's show. So today: a debate with three parenting experts who have radically different ideas about raising kids. Carla Naumburg wrote in her book titled How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids, “We are always practicing something even if it is not something that we want to get better at.” What a powerful reality to bring us to a place of noticing our daily habits. Sometimes we are practicing things that we were modeled and we are unaware that we do them. Sometimes we are well aware of practicing a bad habit but we just don't stop because the reality is that we humans can be morons. Other times we have intentionally cultivated daily habits that help us practice what we actually want to get better at. My encouragement for us this week is to think about what we are practicing. May we always remember that we have a choice in what we are getting better at. There is abundant grace for the journey. None of us get it right all the time, but the more we practice what is good, the better we get at it. You are not alone!
In her book, How To Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids, author Carla Naumburg drops so many practical and powerful tips for becoming a calmer parent. If you are anything like me you need these reminders. Yes, we've heard them before, but timing is everything! You are not a bad parent, and definitely not the only one who looses your sh*t with your kids. Here's to noticing before exploding, and choosing new habits one day at a time. Listen for her definition of F.A.R.T. and how noticing becomes our power play.
As Beyoncé sang in “Lemonade,” “Sorry, I ain't sorry/No, no, hell nah!” We live in the age of #SorryNotSorry. From the “sorry if you were offended” statements from celebrities' press agents to the “mistakes were made” verbal obstacle course taken by politicians to the mealy-mouthed, stumbling excuses and non-apologies from the many men implicated in the #MeToo movement, the art of apologizing seems to have been lost. But we can find it again! Each year, Judaism gives us an opportunity for self-reflection and accountability. In fact, in the lead-up to Yom Kippur, Jews have the responsibility of apologizing to anyone we may have wronged in the past year. Apologizing won't get any easier, but it can become more heartfelt. To help understand how to atone in a sincere and meaningful way, Miriam and Dan are joined in this episode by Carla Naumburg, Ph.D., a clinical social worker, speaker and author of multiple articles and books about parenting, including the forthcoming “How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids.” Tune in to hear Carla's take on Judaism's guidelines for apologizing, the Jewish process of forgiveness and her great suggestions for High Holiday resolutions to help us all make better choices in the coming year (Becky with the good hair, take note!).
