Even though many of us think we need an internal cattle prod in order to retain our edge, research shows that people who have a supportive inner attitude — who have their own back — are more resilient and effective. Not to mention happier. And nicer.And yet, it is easy for skeptics to be turned off by some of the language and practices of self compassion. So today we brought in a guest who puts it in plain English, and is very funny. Carla Naumberg PhD is a clinical social worker, author, and mother. "You'll never be able to do it right." "You're a shitty parent." From a time that was not only full, but fun, rewarding, and productive?  My guest this week, Christy Wright did just that - walked away from a season of immense abundance in her career, not because of difficult situations but simply because God called her out of it. She says this call was so clear she came to a point where she feared disobedience more than the uncertainty of leaving her career. She followed God into a new season of freedom and work. It's like God called Christy in for a meeting to talk about rebranding - not to change who He had created her to be, but to change her everyday look and her assignments.  We've spent our summer talking through our unique "mom brands" and in our final week of Summer of Mentorship we're hitting on something that will happen to each of us as moms at one point or many - the need to rebrand. To leave behind what worked and was right for that specific time to embrace what God is saying is right for now. Ecclesiastes reminds us there is rhythm and seasons to life and we will walk through transitions in our work and home life. Carla Naumburg wrote in her book titled How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids, “We are always practicing something even if it is not something that we want to get better at.” What a powerful reality to bring us to a place of noticing our daily habits. Sometimes we are practicing things that we were modeled and we are unaware that we do them. Sometimes we are well aware of practicing a bad habit but we just don't stop because the reality is that we humans can be morons. Other times we have intentionally cultivated daily habits that help us practice what we actually want to get better at. My encouragement for us this week is to think about what we are practicing. May we always remember that we have a choice in what we are getting better at. There is abundant grace for the journey. None of us get it right all the time, but the more we practice what is good, the better we get at it. You are not alone!

From the “sorry if you were offended” statements from celebrities' press agents to the “mistakes were made” verbal obstacle course taken by politicians to the mealy-mouthed, stumbling excuses and non-apologies from the many men implicated in the #MeToo movement, the art of apologizing seems to have been lost. But we can find it again! Each year, Judaism gives us an opportunity for self-reflection and accountability. In fact, in the lead-up to Yom Kippur, Jews have the responsibility of apologizing to anyone we may have wronged in the past year. Apologizing won't get any easier, but it can become more heartfelt.
