What goes around comes around. The toxins we build into products come back to poison us sooner or later. It's the circular economy at work. So imagine if we could design systems to remove those toxins in the first place, or at least capture them and return them to the process. Building a cradle-to-cradle economy is a mammoth task, and it's the mission of Louise Nash, the CEO of Circularity, a consultancy that helps companies build circular systems. She's also the founder of X-Labs, a workshop series that kickstarts the journey for companies as big as Lion Breweries and as tiny as EV Maritime.

Itt jön a képbe a Bedrock Farm. Könnyen azonosulni tudtak a projekt célkitűzésével: az alapítók ígérete szerint az év minden egyes napján, 0-24 tudnak kontrollált környezetben, változatlan minőségben termeszteni növényeket, ráadásul 95%-os víz megtakarítással. A projektben megtestesült mindaz, amit a két befektető keresett: agritech megoldásra épülő, előremutató, fenntartható rendszer, hosszú távon megtérülő üzleti tervvel. On today’s show we discuss Human Factors--both in the traditional sense and in cyber security specifically--with Margaret Cunningham. Margaret has a PhD in Applied Experimental Psychology. She's a member of Forcepoint's X-Labs as the behavioral scientist subject matter expert. X-Labs develops scalable human-centric, security solutions. In this episode of What That Means, Camille has Margaret Cunningham of Forcepoint on to talk about the intersection of Human Factors and Cybersecurity. They cover a lot of ground, like: The intent of human factors practitioners Where the fields of human factors and cybersecurity intersect The questions guiding human factors practitioners Why people break the rules How human factors can be used to improve training How you measure a person And more. Have a listen. Here are some key take-aways: Human factors practitioners focus on the evaluation and design of everything, with the intent to optimize human performance. Human factors can be broken down into different areas of interest like physical environments, cognitive function, systemic issues, etc. Factors like culture, language, and geography can impact design. The link between the two fields of cybersecurity and human factors is relatively new. Human factors practitioners are now able to use behavioral analytics to highlight anomalous past behaviors with much more specificity. We learn how to break the rules from other people, so behavioral analytics tends to uncover clusters of bad actors. Some interesting quotes from today’s episode: “We have to know the limits of people, whether it’s a cognitive or a physical limit doesn’t matter.” “People are amazing, but we’re not really good at everything. So what can we understand about what we’re designing to improve human performance in areas where we’re weak, while also capitalizing on what we’re good at?” “We really are starting to use behavioral analytics in a much more sophisticated way, where we’re building an understanding of people’s past rule-breaking or their past exploration that doesn’t really fit with their peers.” “A lot of times, we learn how to break rules from other people. We learn what the implicit rules are versus the explicit rules from our managers or supervisors or our peers. And in that case, we can start seeing that there are clusters or groups of bad apples. And that can be very meaningful in terms of understanding organizational exposure.” “I think that people who truly understand how to build metrics that can capture human behavior are going to be making great strides in this industry.”

Our world is changing. With increases in human population and wealth, we have reached record levels of production and consumption. As a result, this has placed significant pressure on our natural systems and biodiversity. We are seeing the effects that the take, make, waste approach of the current linear economy has. New design methods and radical changes to the way we do business are needed to solve this. In this episode, Oliver McDermott talks to Louise Nash from Circularity about the Circular Economy, Xlabs, and what it takes to change the world.

What do James Bond and Lipitor have in common? Why do traffic jams appear out of nowhere on highways? What can we learn about human nature and world history from a glass of water? On April 9th 2019 XLabs hosted a private evening with Safi Bahcall. Today we are happy to bring you behind closed doors to the fascinating Q&A from that event. Physicist and biotech entrepreneur Safi Bahcall, author of Loonshots, discusses with XLabs CEO Dr. Radhika Dirks a surprising new way of thinking about the mysteries of group behavior that challenges everything we thought we knew about radical breakthroughs. Bahcall shows why groups will suddenly change from embracing wild new ideas to rigidly rejecting them, just as flowing water will suddenly change into brittle ice. Mountains of print have been written about culture. Learn the small shifts in structure that control this transition, the same way that temperature controls the change from water to ice.
Our guests this week have a challenge for all accounting and finance professionals: start thinking in terms of moonshots. Now, you might be asking yourself, what in the world is a moonshot? It’s a huge, seemingly insurmountable quest that is ultimately inspirational and game-changing in nature. It’s something that, when achieved, changes the boundary between possible and impossible – just like the USA’s attempt to land Apollo 11 on the moon almost exactly 50 years ago. Sherif Hallaba and Travis Dirks are the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, respectively, for an organization named XLabs. They describe themselves as a company that builds moonshot companies for the future, powered by artificial intelligence, unconventional computing, and neurotechnology. And if that sounds a little “out there” for our little podcast... well, it is, but they make a pretty strong argument that adopting a moonshot mindset will have some very tangible benefits for accounting and finance pros. This is an Overheard@X short with Dr. Radhika Dirks, CEO of XLabs. It’s a brief dive into the deep roots of AI. David Hilbert in 1900 gave an address in Paris to the International Congress of Mathematicians that inspired much of the world we live in today. We believe that understanding the roots of the concepts others take for granted allows us to see new routes to technology. Jump on board an intellectual roller coaster as David Hilbert, Hermann Minkowski, Kurt Godel, Alan Turing, Mathematics, Quantum Computing and AI all come together in just over 12 minutes!
Mental Model Arbitrage(MMA) is an important fuel for Moonshots here at XLabs. By building in one field with assembled structures from elsewhere we are able to make fantastic leaps. At it's heart, MMA is about getting very good at making analogies, then using those analogies to transfer knowledge and know how from one place to another. Douglas R. Hofstadter, author of Godel Esher Bach argues that "analogies are the fuel and fire of thinking". We could not agree more. In fact we have been practicing this skill intentionally for nearly a decade now and encourage you to do it as well. It is truly a mental super power.

Think about artificial intelligence building your website for you. While that is something we don't have right now, our guest, Oliver Christie is taking to the forefront to make it possible in the very near future. In fact, they're trying that on their own website. Oliver Christie is a co-founder and CEO of XLABS. He leads an international team that builds enterprise software using artificial intelligence (AI). That's just the tip of the iceberg. In this interview, you'll also learn: Oliver's passion for numbers and how he uses it to solve real world problems How he started XLABS Their new discovery on how they compress data down by as much as 99.92% How his wife keeps his balance between people and profit His future plan for XLABS and how they will change the world And a whole lot more, so be sure to listen and subscribe...
