Lucy Gossage has been around on the long distance triathlon scene for a long time, and she's instantly recognisable with her blue Erdinger kit and infectious smile. If you don't know Lucy, she has 14 Ironman victories to her name including IMUK, IM Wales, IM Lanzarote and Patagonman (basically all the toughest ones). In 2019 she stepped back from IM racing to focus more on her work as an Oncologist in Nottingham. You'll get a sense of how Lucy likes to challenge herself with that race resume, and today's conversation is all about another of those challenges. And they don't really come much bigger than The Winter Spine Challenge - 268 miles on the Pennine Way in the depths of winter.   It's a non-stop event requiring participants to be self sufficient. The temperature barely gets above 0ºC, with knee deep snow and blizzards at times, and as if that's not enough the sleep deprivation can literally be a nightmare. We chat about:   Weekly power strength yoga - "I just knew that I had to get as strong as I could"   The benefits of commuting to work and keeping it fun Walking poles in ultra racing - "As soon as I got them, I was like, oh my god, these are a game changer." Sleep walking - "The most terrifying discombobulating experience I've ever had." Shoe selection - "I went with Hoka Speedgoats, which many say is crazy for that terrain. But they were so comfortable." Sleep deprivation and cognitive function - "I could see the red lines on my Garmin where I'd gone off the course and I was like bloody hell I am actually sleepwalking."   To find out more about Lucy please use these channels: Twitter @lucygoss Insta @lucygossage     Link to topics we covered in the show NHS Blog posts Lucy and I talked for quite a bit at the start about the NHS and she mentioned some blog posts she had written. From a devastating bike crash to a triumphant win at Patagonman, Laura Siddall, known to many as Sid, is a prime example of determination and resilience. Transitioning from the corporate grind in Australia, she embraced the rigorous demands of professional triathlon—a sport she leaped into at age 29 and quickly dominated at the amateur level before moving into the professional ranks.   Sid shares the challenges she faced early in her professional career, including securing sponsorships and adapting to the intense competitive environment. She delves into her experience with injuries, particularly a serious bike crash in Brazil that resulted in a brain bleed. She describes the intense recovery process, emphasizing the mental challenges that accompanied her physical recovery: the unexpected emotional toll and the difficulty of regaining her pre-accident form.   Despite the setbacks, Sid managed to return to competition, participating in the Ironman World Championship in Kona and later winning the Patagonman—an event known for its extreme conditions, ranging from a frigid swim to a grueling, self-supported run. She emphasizes the crucial role of rest and recovery in her career, especially post-accident, highlighting how the Lever Movement system was pivotal during her injury rehabilitation. It has since become a key component of her training for enhancing performance and refining technique.   Sid's story is a reminder of how professional athletes go through complexities of recovery and competition, highlighting the realities of professional sports and the mental and physical strength required to succeed in the long run.   Quotes “There's this huge transition from an amateur to professional. And you kind of get caught up initially into like, ‘I've got to get results. I've got to get sponsors. How am I going to survive?' Well, actually, just put your head down. Adjust to the training, adjust to that kind of a new life, and the results hopefully will come and then you can get your name out and then you can start approaching for sponsorship and support.” (10:47 | Laura Siddall) “When I turned professional, I had no plan of what I would achieve. I just wanted to think, ‘Okay, if I give it my full 100% attention, how good can I be for myself?' And I would say it's definitely been up and down. Life sport is, you know, the highs are high, the lows are lows. It's also what makes the highs sweeter, so to speak, when you've kind of got those lows. It's all relative. It's sports. It's not a critical industry of the world, so to speak. We're very lucky to get to do or to choose to follow our passion. (12:17 | Laura Siddall)  “People ask me now, ‘Are you fully recovered? Are you back?' Like, ‘Yeah, I'm back training and racing,' but I don't think you ever return to who you were before a big accident. You can still be good, but it's just a different person, different way.” (15:16 | Laura Siddall)  “I don't particularly enjoy running on the treadmill, but having a lever system just makes it a whole different experience.” (47:31 | Laura Siddall)   Links Connect with Laura Siddal: https://www.instagram.com/lmsid/ https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/  https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Jason and Greg chat to Gavin Booker, who recently took on and conquered Patagonman. The race is not for beginners. It's  a grueling triathlon that takes place in one of the most breathtaking natural settings in the world. Starting in the Aysen Fjord, athletes must swim 3.8 kilometers, cycle 180 kilometers along the famous Carretera Austral, and then run 42.2 kilometers through canyons, next to lakes and waterfalls to General Carrera Lake. Along the way, participants may encounter a variety of wildlife, including sea otters, sea lions, whales, dolphins, foxes, and even pumas. Turns out Gavin also has an interesting back story, which leads to another inspiring story.  Support the showClick here to subscribe to our newsletter and automatically get our latest podcasts, blogs, offers etc into your inbox.Support the showClick here to subscribe to our newsletter and automatically get our latest podcasts, blogs, offers etc into your inbox.

Correu maratonas e estreou no triathlon. This week, Coach Troy shares his experience with Patagonman.Patagonman is an Iron distance race. Water temp was between 6-9 Celsius. You need to jump off a boat that is 3-6 meters high.  Once you hit the water, it will shock you because it was cold. But once adrenaline kicks in, your body can amazingly adjust.Traveling to the Southern part of Chile was a challenge. After arriving from the US then you have another 6 hour flight to get to the race venue. The most challenging was the fact that the race starts in Chataboco which is an hour away. In the morning of the race, you have to be in the ferry to jump off.  You have to have everything prepared for all your transition sets before 4 AM. That means you need to get into transition at about 3 AM, at the very latest. That also means that sleep was a challenge.  To be part of these chats live join the tri club at https://www.teamsiriustriclub.com/team-sirius-tri-club/Get yourself a "Team Believe" shirt, tank or hoody and be part of Siri's greatest challenge.

Lucy Gossage finished last in a cross country race when she was 13 or 14. And while she didn’t realise it at the time, she now recognises that a fear of failure held her back from participating in any competitive sport until she was talked into doing her 1st triathlon at the age of 26. Fast forward a few years, she’s now an oncology doctor and former professional triathlete who won 13 x Ironman Championships throughout her career. Lucy has now returned to working as an oncology doctor part-time while using her available time to chase new experiences outside her comfort zone (like her recent race at Patagonman) while using her platform to drive exercise-related initiatives for cancer patients and thrivers. In this conversation, we discuss the fear of failure, how suffering is a choice for athletes and the Imposter Complex. In 2016, Ashley found out that the prosecutors would not be pursuing the case against her rapist. 3 days later, she received an email from an organization that she loves & supports to join them at the NYC Triathlon. Being in desperate need of something to live for, she applied immediately. She showed up on race day overwhelmed & regretting her decision to sign-up. But, she used all the anger, confusion, embarrassment, shame, & frustration from her abuse to not only get through it but also finish 3rd in her AG & qualify for Nationals. Given the deep desperation, she felt otherwise, it was huge for her to be able to feel any strong positive emotion. She felt that she was getting better. In just her second year, she went onto complete Escape from Alcatraz, US Nationals, her first 70.3, & even her first full IM distance at Patagonman. She says that Triathlon didn't just save her, it ensured the bond that allowed her abuser to control her was broken once & for all. It's now been 2yrs since she found out her abuser would not be prosecuted, & she is alive, happy, thriving, & moving forward one step at a time. - Show Notes: https://www.humansoftriathlon.com/hotpodcast-ashley - H.o.
