In this powerful and raw episode, Brad sits down with special guest Paul Casey, whose story of redemption will leave you inspired and fired up to take full ownership of your life. Paul spent 10 consecutive years in some of the toughest prisons in the California Department of Corrections. But instead of letting that time break him, Paul used it as fuel for transformation. Toward the tail end of his sentence, he got sober, dove into fitness and nutrition, and began helping others with their macros and training—all from behind bars. Upon release, Paul wasted no time jumping headfirst into the fitness industry—training clients at Orangetheory and leading group fitness classes. Today, he's the proud owner of The Better You, a thriving personal training business in the Bay Area offering private and group coaching. We talk about: What prison really taught him about discipline and character How fitness and sobriety became his anchor The mindset it takes to turn rock bottom into a launching pad His transition from incarceration to entrepreneurship Why daily habits and structure are non-negotiable in building a better life Paul's story is proof that your past does not define you—and that with purpose, discipline, and a vision, you can rewrite yours. In the latest episode of the Building Better Developers podcast — part of the Building Better Businesses season — Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche tackle an all-too-common challenge: how to stop chasing your tail when you're overwhelmed. When panic sets in, it's easy to feel trapped and exhausted. But by learning to recognize the signs early and taking small, strategic steps, you can break the cycle and get your progress back on track. Stop Chasing Your Tail: Recognize When You're Stuck Panic usually strikes when we realize we're no longer moving forward. Rob describes this moment as a dog chasing its tail — you suddenly become aware that you're going nowhere, which triggers frustration or fear. Common causes include: Overcommitment and unrealistic expectations Financial stress from unplanned expenses Projects running off course Emotional burnout from constant pressure Callout: “Sometimes the best first step is to simply stop and admit: this isn't working.” — Rob Broadhead Before rushing to fix everything at once, take a moment to breathe. Acknowledge where you are without judgment — it's the first step toward real progress. Reset Your Focus and Stop Chasing Your Tail Once you've caught yourself chasing your tail, the next step is resetting your focus. Michael Meloche shared a simple but powerful process: Assess the Situation: Figure out why you're stuck. Time, money, overcommitment? Identify the actual causes. Set a Realistic Goal: Pick an achievable objective. Make sure it's something you believe you can reach. Take One Step Forward: You don't need to solve everything today. Just move one inch closer to your target. Rob emphasized that panic often prompts us to make bad decisions. Instead, progress happens through small, steady steps, and each small win builds confidence. Pro Tip: If your goal feels overwhelming, break it into even smaller milestones. Take Your First Step: Stop Chasing Your Tail Today The biggest challenge once you're stuck is picking your first step. It doesn't have to be huge — it just needs to be in the right direction. Need to fix your finances? Cancel one small expense today. Overwhelmed with work? Finish one small task you've been avoiding. Stuck in a complicated client relationship? Draft an email to start the conversation. Callout: “Momentum builds when you focus on just one small, positive action at a time.” — Rob Broadhead Even slowing down your tail-chasing a little bit helps. Eventually, you'll regain control, stop spinning, and move purposefully toward your goals. Challenge of the Episode This week's challenge is simple but powerful: If you feel stuck, take just one step forward today. Pause. Breathe. Pick one action that moves you closer to your goal. You'll be amazed how much better you feel once you're driving — even if it's just one small victory. And remember, Rob and Michael invite you to reach out anytime at info@developernurd.com if you want to share your journey or need a boost of encouragement. Software updaten?

In this episode, Dr. Debi Silber explores the often overlooked consequences of being exceptionally capable, especially in the aftermath of betrayal. She highlights how this trait can lead to detrimental outcomes, both personally and professionally, and offers insights into how to navigate this challenging situation. Episode Highlights: The Capability Trap (00:00:45): Dr. Debi dives into how being highly capable can work against you, using examples from her work with individuals at The PBT Institute. When others recognize your competence, they may start relying on you excessively, causing you to shoulder more than you should. The Burden of Overcommitment (00:03:15): Dr. Debi discusses the dangers of taking on too much due to your capability. She explains that even though you can handle it, it doesn't mean you should, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. The Brick Wall Metaphor (00:05:30): A powerful metaphor is introduced—the brick wall. Dr. Debi illustrates how trust, like a brick wall, is built one brick at a time. However, one moment of betrayal can shatter the entire wall. She emphasizes the need for those responsible for the betrayal to actively participate in rebuilding trust. External Validation (00:09:15): Dr. Debi touches on seeking validation externally, such as through recognition and praise for your capabilities. She warns against relying solely on external validation, as it can lead to self-neglect and stress-related issues. Physical and Emotional Toll (00:11:30): The episode discusses the physical and emotional toll of taking on too much. Dr. Debi draws from her health background to highlight how stress-related symptoms, illness, and disease can manifest when we push ourselves beyond our limits. The Opportunity to Rewrite the Script (00:14:00): Dr. Debi emphasizes that betrayal provides an opportunity to reflect on our roles and responsibilities. It allows us to rewrite the script, set healthier boundaries, and reassess our approach to life. Self-Worth Beyond Actions (00:16:30): The episode concludes by challenging the notion that self-worth is solely tied to our actions and achievements. Dr. Debi encourages listeners to consider their intrinsic value beyond what they do. Let's Wrap it Up: Dr. Debi Silber's insightful exploration of the pitfalls of exceptional capability provides valuable guidance for those navigating post-betrayal experiences. This episode encourages listeners to strike a balance between their capabilities and self-care while fostering a deeper understanding of self-worth. One of the greatest threats to leading with joy is giving into the temptation of overcommitment. When our lives are crowded, cluttered, and cramped, it is difficult to hear God and live in loving union with Him. The irony is, we can "fit in" regular practices of Sabbath and silence while still being driven by an overscheduled life. But how do we resist this temptation? Silence, solitude, and sabbath must become our practices. AND spaciousness must become our mindset. In order to live spacious lives, we must avoid the critical traps that keep us settling for an overcommitted life. What would it feel like to live with breathing room? How would it feel to limit your "Yes" and claim more margin in your schedule? What if you could build in time for extended thinking, praying, and being? On today's podcast, I identify several traps that keep you from the gift of spaciousness and offer wisdom that will help you live with a renewed sense of joy.

At some point in our academic medicine careers, we will all overcommit ourselves to an overwhelming number of responsibilities. Jennifer Apps, PhD, joins the Faculty Factory Podcast this week to chat about reconnecting to our values to reclaim some balance. Dr. Apps is a pediatric neuropsychologist at Children's Wisconsin, a pediatric acute care children's hospital in Milwaukee. She also serves as associate professor and the vice chair of faculty development in the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Department. No one wants to miss a potentially great opportunity and many of us have a hard time saying no, but without clearly defining our values it is difficult to prioritize what matters most. “The worst feeling comes when you get into these positions and you feel like you're not doing any of them because you're just managing them all instead of really being able to excel,” she said. As we enter a new year and Season 5 of the Faculty Factory Podcast, this interview will hopefully serve as an inspiration to many. “We've all gone into these fields where we've demonstrated the ability to persevere towards a long-term goal, but in order to do that, you have to have these values that have been guiding you,” Dr. Apps said. Joining me this time on the Productivity Podcast is Dr. Don Davis, author, and established coach & consultant for businesses in the healthcare and life sciences industries. A big proponent of daily routines and time blocking, Dr. Don starts off his day by meditating and journaling to close out the previous day and prepare for what's coming. While it may sound weird to you to close a day in the morning of the next day, this is what works for him and it's something that everyone has to take into account when building up a daily routine. There are a lot of different routines that big names like Cal Newport follow that work for them, but that doesn't mean that they will work for YOU—trust me on this one, I've tried... You need to find something that works for you instead of trying to force yourself to follow a routine that was not meant for you. Dr. Don shared several great methods to deal with over-commitment, focus, and goal setting in this episode of the podcast. My personal favorites are the “DARE” method (listen and find out more!) as well as time blocking with color coding to show how much time you're putting towards your goals. There are many great actionable nuggets in the episode, and with all of his experience helping others, I highly suggest checking out Don's book (link below), website, and more. Dr. Iorg is joined by Richard Johnstone, Associate Professor of Leadership Formation, to talk about the importance of margin for ministry leaders.
Satan wants us to be overcommitted and burnt out by community or isolated and bitter about it. Our yes or no is by the strength of the Holy Spirit. He empowers us to do what we can only do through Him, which is to say yes when we need to and no when we need to. KEY BIBLE PASSAGES:Matthew 5:37 says, “But let your ‘Yes' be ‘Yes,' and your ‘No,' ‘No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”CALL TO ACTION:- Are you over or under committing right now?- What are you saying yes to? What are you saying no to?- How can you be more intentional with the community God has called you to in this season of life?Follow Emma: https://emmadanzey.wordpress.com/
Dr. Iorg goes beyond simple time-management tools and addresses the root causes that lead to overwork, overcommitment, and inefficient use of time.
