In this episode, we explore Ours Is The Hand That Sews Time, a two-person exhibition at M. LeBlanc featuring new work by father and son, Peter and Jake Fagundo. Both artists challenge the notion of painting as a finished product, instead embracing it as a continuous, evolving process. Peter, a longtime professor at SAIC, draws from his deep archive of past drawings and appropriated imagery, creating works that bridge abstraction and figuration. His son Jake, shaped by the digital age and a dynamic array of artistic influences, balances historical references with playful figurative work. Together, their pieces create a dialogue across generations, blending tradition with contemporary exploration. Paris Chong sits down with artist Melanie Pullen, who recently exhibited at William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica. Melanie prefers smaller, more authentic galleries and finds that the evolving LA art scene is becoming less personable. She discusses her art career, which has involved performance art, motion picture directing, and photography. Her upcoming series represents the culmination of her artistic journey. Melanie shares her crazy story about being kicked out of Mexico for taking a photo of a dangerous drug dealer. As a single mother, she now has to balance her passion for photography with safety concerns. Our interview concludes with a discussion of the challenges women face in the art world, as Melanie offers her advice for aspiring female photographers. Both Paris and Melanie are single mothers and relate to the struggle of balancing motherhood with their careers. Compound Yellow's featured artist Gary Cannone dominates every part of the compound with his LA from Chicago brand of conceptual art. Fun name drops include Bernini and Maritizo Catalan. Tune in for the rest. bio: Gary Cannone (Guerino Giovanni Cannone) was born in 1964 to Italian immigrants working factory jobs in Chicago. He learned english from American 70s television and was obsessed with Norm Crosby, Carol Burnett, the Three Stooges, Mad Magazine, Wacky Packages, and the Marx Brothers. His grandfather (and namesake) was crushed to death by a pool table the day before Cannone's eighth birthday in a warehouse accident. He played in the early 80s leftist punk rock band The Leeches but, as his interest in performing music waned, he saw Vito Aconcci lecture and decided to become an artist. Cannone exhibited conceptual and often dadaistic art while headquartered from Chicago, Rome, and Los Angeles until he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2013. As the disease took a toll on his body, he took a hiatus but began to work again digitally using social media to distribute art and jokes. Interest in his communal project of parody album covers “Albums by Conceptual Artists” led to invitations to exhibit again. He began exploring the effects of his disease on his body and brain which led him back to the comedic tropes he loved so much as a youngster; adressing his disability through the lens of slapstick rather than advocacy. Cannone's recent work can be described as a decidedly reductive art executed with the deft skill of a prop comic. The resulting ensemble explores fragility, instability, urges, communication, humiliation, tension, torture, gravity, parody, dexterity, and death. https://compoundyellow.com/ https://garycannone.studio/

Master Glass Painter at Judson Studios in Los Angeles, California, Indre Bileris earned a BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design and became involved in stained glass conservation during that same time at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity's conservation program. Having been a conservator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters from 2007 to 2012, the artist arrived at the Judson Studios with an extensive body of design and painting work for liturgical, educational, and residential installations. Her hand can be seen in much of the painted work that comes out of the studio today. As a replication painter since 1996, Bileris has learned her craft from masters no longer bound by earthly constraints. Their work remains, part legacy, part teacher, and in learning how to recreate their style and imagery she is now able to incorporate elements of each master into her own artwork. The artist has created new work and done replication painting in equal portions, with a side of autonomous work made for art shows and donations to the American Glass Guild (AGG) auction. With a Masters in education, for a time she countered her solitary life as a glass painter by working with young children as an art teacher. Bileris began her training as a stained glass replication painter while still attending and completing undergraduate work at Parsons School of Design. As a funded Kress Fellow and conservation apprentice at St. Ann's for Restoration and the Arts, Inc. in Brooklyn Heights, New York, she recreated numerous damaged or destroyed painted works. Following her apprenticeship she did internships at Canterbury Cathedral Stained Glass Studio, England, and the Cologne, Germany Cathedral Studio. Early in her career Bileris was employed by Jack Cushen Studio Restoration, East Marion, New York, to replicate the painting and staining of The Four Winds stained glass window for the Stanford White Cottage, Tick Hall, Montauk, New York. Some of her other freelance projects for Cushen include painting and staining work for the Church of the Ascension, Fifth Ave, New York, and painting two figures in a Tiffany Studios window (circa 1900), which was in the possession of a private collector. “As a replicator, it's not about you, but the people who came before. It's detective work. You have to figure out what the artist did. It's never gotten any easier. Now that I know more I realize how challenging it is to do. Part of what I love about stained glass is that it's handed off from generation to generation. Replication allows you to be trained by artists who are no longer with us.” Her career as a replication painter has allowed Bileris to work on prestigious commissions with many of the best stained glass studios in the country. She co-designed and created watercolor sketches and cartoons for Venturella Studio, Union Square, New York, for the studio's 68 square feet of designed and fabricated stained glass for The Ivy Club, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. These windows commemorate the inclusion of women into the club through the imagery of migrating butterflies and ivy. Another project for Venturella Studio involved designing and painting windows for a synagogue in Maple Glenn, Pennsylvania, home to 70 windows created by Benoît Gilsoul. Like many glass painters, Bileris' process begins with a trace and matte. She started out working with gum and water for tracing, but eventually switched to clove oil because it's much more forgiving and flexible. In 2013, Bileris was awarded an AGG scholarship to study glass painting with Jonathan Cooke at Wheaton Village, Milleville, New Jersey. Cooke served a traditional apprenticeship at York Minster and started his own business in 1987. His book Time and Temperature was published early in 2013. Bileris' projects have included residential commissions, such as her work for a private wine cellar on Oyster Bay, Long Island. This commission included four windows: a plated window that mimics tile patterns and displays an iron work pattern on a separate piece of plated glass; a pair of sandblasted, painted, and stained glass windows that feature animals drinking wine; and a tessellating pattern window also featuring wildlife. “Those windows feel very much like me,” she states. As a submission for the Corning Museum of Glass' New Glass Review, Bileris created her autonomous work The Show as well as a nursery window based on her love of English illustration. Fabricated at Venturella Studios, The Show was included in AGG's 2011 members' exhibition. “It's challenging to find an in-road to doing painted windows as personal artistic expression. Stained glass is not considered art because there are a lot of works out there taken directly from pattern books. The ecclesiastic tie reminds many people of houses of worship rather than galleries. And stained glass is dependent on light and environment and somehow is too crafty or pretty or religious. But it fits me. I want to keep growing and see if I can really become an artist in this medium, to be brave enough to go beyond being an able illustrator on glass. Georgia O'Keeffe said: ‘Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing.'” At the end of 2015, Bileris left New York and took a position as lead painter at Judson Studios in LA. Though she has never prioritized showing gallery work, thanks to Judson Studios the artist exhibited in a group LA Art show, and a small work was included in the 2023 show through the SGAA. She is starting work for a group show at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, California, this upcoming year and may be working with Narcissus Quagliata on his online class in 2024. Earlier this year, Bileris taught a two-week course at the Vilnius Academy of Art In Lithuania, which was a dream come true as she is the child of Lithuanian immigrants. “I was born in the US but spoke Lithuanian as my first language, so that chance basically pulled together everything I care about.”

Nuit Blanche is upon us, and the streets of Toronto will be once again filled with unique pieces of art. Today in TO host Dani Stover speaks with Heidi Reitmaier, the executive director of "Myseum of Toronto" about what installations people should check out and how one...or 52 to be accurate, are connected to the theme of the year. After that, Dani Stover explores why we not only need to protect the arts in this city but the artists also. She is joined by Grace Lee Reynolds, the CEO, and Brooke Duval, the Executive Director of the Toronto Artscape Foundation. They tell Dani how hard it can be for artists to live and create in Toronto, what organizations like the Toronto Artscape Foundation do to protect the culture, and what you can do too. Finally, producer Glenn Bragonier fills you in on the weird and interesting history of a building on Dupont that will soon be demolished, but at one point helped the Allies win World War II...amongst many other things.

For a long time, the birthday of 19th century composer Stephen Foster was a big deal in Pittsburgh. People here were proud that Foster, who was born on July 4th in Lawrenceville, was the popular songwriter behind a bunch of hits at the time — “Beautiful Dreamer,” “Camptown Races,” “O Susanna,” and more. And while Foster himself was not a confederate leader, there was a statue of him in Oakland for 118 years depicting a barefoot Black man playing a banjo at his feet. The controversial piece came down by unanimous decision in 2018, and we wondered where it's been since. It turns out, there's a museum director in LA who wants it, and has a plan. We're with co-curator Hamza Walker of LAXART. ***This conversation originally published June 29, 2022. Check out the city and surrounding region's fireworks itineraries here. Growing up in Los Angeles, Joan Agajanian Quinn befriended artists at a young age. Over time, her relationships in the art world grew, and she was soon at the center of the LA art scene, befriending artists like Andy Warhol and David Hockney. Quinn explains to host Giselle Fernandez how she became known as one of the most painted women in the world, with world-famous artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, George Hurrell, Kenneth Price and Robert Mapplethorpe capturing her portrait. As the West Coast editor of Warhol's Interview Magazine, and host of her own interview series, "Joan Quinn Profiles," Quinn used her fame in the art world to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming artists.
Our LA series, supported by Audio-Technica, returns this week with a Last Bohemians first: in a very special episode, we speak to three generations of an American artistic dynasty up in the leafy hills of Laurel Canyon: the incredible Betye Saar, her daughter Alison Saar and and granddaughter Maddy Leeser. Betye Saar, 96 (she was 95 at the time of making this podcast), is a revered assemblage, collage and installation artist, known for her use of found objects, and was part of both the Black Arts and feminist art movements in 1960s and 70s California. Her best known works include 1969's Black Girl's Window, which incorporates elements of mysticism and brings to mind the current #BlackGirlMagic movement, and 1972's The Liberation of Aunt Jemima, a piece of art that confronted racist and cultural stereotypes. The latter was so revolutionary, said the Guardian, “that the activist and scholar Angela Davis credited it with launching the Black women's movement.” Betye is currently experiencing something of a renaissance, underlined by recent, pre-pandemic solo shows at MOMA in New York and its LA equivalent, LACMA. She still makes art every day. But, as Harper's Bazaar recently said, her proudest legacy is her family. We sit around the table and share tea and biscuits not only with Betye but with Alison Saar, 66, one of her three daughters, who started out by working with her father, Richard Saar, in his ceramics studio. A breathtaking sculptor whose work spans four decades, Alison's pieces often take the form of female figures. They explore different takes on African-African experiences, and the idea of history repeating, often made in response to events and themes like Hurricane Katrina and the AIDS crisis, the menopause and mythology. And we are also joined by Alison's daughter Maddy Inez Leeser, 28, who makes stunning ceramics inspired by the natural world. The phrase “generational magic” really jumps out during this conversation, as the three women discuss motherhood and creativity, making art out of the everyday, being a mixed race family and the importance of exploring their African-American heritage, and the life and career advice that has been passed down from generation to generation. It was such a privilege to join them one afternoon at Alison's house in LA. We hope you enjoy hearing their gorgeous slice of life among the birdsong and car beeps. Audio-Technica's commitment to the user experience and their devotion to high quality design, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution has placed them at the forefront of the industry for the last 60 years. ABOUT THE LAST BOHEMIANS Journalist and broadcaster Kate Hutchinson launched The Last Bohemians in 2019, pairing the audio with stunning portraits by photographer Laura Kelly. It stole hearts with 86-year-old Molly Parkin's stories of self-pleasuring, LSD countess Amanda Feilding's trepanning tales and Pamela Des Barres' reflections on supergroupiedom. It won silver for Best New Podcast at the 2020 British Podcast Awards and was a finalist at the 2021 Audio Production Awards. Series two featured folk legend Judy Collins; British fashion icon Zandra Rhodes, dealing with the aftermath of losing her lover while celebrating 50 years in fashion; anarcho-punk innovator and illustrator Gee Vaucher; and the controversial witch at the heart of the 1970s occult boom, Maxine Sanders. In 2021, The Last Bohemians launched a lockdown special with performance artist Marina Abramović; it returned in 2022 with the UK's greatest living painter, Maggi Hambling, as well as Bowie's former best friend Dana Gillespie and theatre actor Cleo Sylvestre. thelastbohemians.co.uk patreon.com/thelastbohemians instagram.com/thelastbohemianspod twitter.com/thelastbohospod

Today I'm talking to one of my clients who started her art career when her husband gifted her with art classes. She was hooked and decided to continue. She went to weekly classes and painted daily because she felt like she had to catch up with others. That was 20 years ago and she's still creating. In this episode, you'll discover: Find out when Susan first realized she was an artist. I asked Susan to share how it felt to sell her first piece. She remembers the painting and the people who purchased it. We both agree that when a painting is framed and hung in its new home, it completes the creation cycle. It begins a new life. Hear how Susan got her work into the LA Art show. It's an amazing story. She realized her dream of having people experience the art and come back to see it again. She used a contest at the show to inspire new artists and as a result has made connections with other creators. It's never too late to start. Susan's story will inspire you and help you see the power of your own dreams. For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/175 ++++++++++++++++++++

Three alumni of the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design have teamed up to design an art gallery housed in an industrial stretch of Historic South-Central Los Angeles. Kevin Sherrod gave Works In Progress a tour of Gallery 90220, which he – along with fellow UCLA architecture alums Chris Doerr and Wayne Thomas – hopes will become a hub of community and inspiration, to be led by and primarily serve an audience of color. “What I'm really interested in is changing the way we understand the memory of Black and Brown people and displaying that architecturally. That's really what this gallery is about," Sherrod said.

In recent years, the LA art world has been expanding more rapidly than that of any city on the planet. Scores of galleries have opened – or opened outposts – there, and this year, with the inaugural edition of Frieze LA, one of the world's leading art fair brands has decided to stake its claim on the city. Meanwhile, new private museums such as the Broad have started to attract large numbers of visitors and LA's flagship institution, LACMA, has been fundraising for a vast, futuristic building designed by Peter Zumthor that will act as its new headquarters. How sustainable is all this growth? Does it augur well for the many artists based in the city? What effect has it had on the urban fabric of LA? And what skills are needed to manage and maintain this expanding arts infrastructure in the future? These are among the topics addressed by Jonathan T.D. Neil in a new Apollo podcast sponsored by Sotheby's Institute of Art. Neil is Director of Sotheby's Institute of Art-Los Angeles, as well as Head of Global Business Development. In the podcast, he sets out why this is such an exciting time for the visual arts in LA – and explains how the distinctive character of the LA art world is driving such dramatic change. There's a lot of name-dropping in this episode, but every story is peppered with many years of wisdom, and by the end Heidi takes muthafuckas to school so don't miss the second half of this episode. We also share stories on the late Juxtapoz co-founder Greg Escalante since Heidi was one of the people closest to him in his final years.
