We love it when we get a chance to talk about very influential bands who are extremely overlooked. It is, after all, the whole reason this podcast exists. And there are few as influential, and overlooked, as Ink & Dagger. Their albums aren't even on Bandcamp, let alone streaming sites. That probably tells you everything you need to know. Frankly, without Ink & Dagger, bands like Thursday, My Chemical Romance and a whole legion of post-hardcore/emo bands from the early 00s simply wouldn't exist. They gained a brief spike in popularity in the 2010s when they reformed with Geoff Rickly from Thursday on vocals, which ensured that their vital legacy got its day in the sun. Ink & Dagger were only active from 1995 to 2000, but were incredibly prolific in that short space of time, producing 4 EPs, 2 splits and 2 albums. Their sound evolved very quickly, and amongst all of that was relentless touring, a revolving door of band members (singer Sean McCabe and guitarist Don Devore remained the only consistent members) and at least a book or two's worth of insane on-the-road hijinks. The band agreed to disband in the year 2000 after their second album. But before they could even release that record, singer Sean McCabe passed away aged 27. A tragic exclamation point at the end of the band's short, crazy existence. If you like post-hardcore in any form but have never heard this band, well... prepare to be educated as, this week, we throw our focus on their debut album "The Fine Art of Original Sin".

As a die-hard Thursday fan, this week's guest comes right out the gates in explaining why Thursday he'll always love. And as it turns out, they're quite an easy band to love due to their ethics and overall affability as a band. Geoff Rickly himself often comes across earnestly and well in interviews, which is something Chris is keen to point out and dive into in the first part of this three parter. In Side A we chat about the band's history, their place in both the New Brunswick, New Jersey music scene, as well as their place in the early-00s emo scene as a whole. At the time, they were touted by some as being the next Nirvana but it was a label that never fit the band. We talk about all that, and their journey to becoming a major label act, in this episode.

If you were a teenager like me in the 90s you found yourself in the early 2000s dizzied by your increasing responsibilities, an entry-level work week, and trying to maintain your youthful connection to music. That's why the title of New Jersey post-hardcore band Thursday's album "Full Collapse" felt like a premonition about where I was headed when it fell in my lap and brought me a much-needed catharsis. That's why when the band announced their first new song in 13 years, I reached out to lead singer and songwriter, Geoff Rickly, to discuss their new song, his journey as a musician and author, and of course what he considers to be his personal Waterproof Record.

An essay, Chelsea Hodson tells us, should be an attempt at clarity. That may be true for a writer, but clarity is the last thing that comes to mind when reading Chelsea's words. Instead, we are swept away by her striking prose, repetition, digressions. Chelsea's words pulse with desire, fear, and hope. Readers walk away from the page, not always knowing what to think but feeling something primal just the same. The words, in this case, are from Chelsea's debut essay collection, Tonight I'm Someone Else, which was published in 2018 and received widespread praise. Aside from gifting us her own prose, Chelsea has made it her business to help others write their truth. Through projects like her Morning Writing Club and private coaching and editing services, community has slowly become a part of Chelsea's world. On this week's Talkhouse episode we've got two guys who've known each other for decades, and who have a popular podcast, a post-hardcore band, and a new novel between them: Geoff Rickly and Jonah Bayer. Now Geoff Rickly is best known as the singer of the band Thursday, whose 2001 album Full Collapse is rightly considered a touchstone in the post-hardcore/screamo genre. That band had a full and varied existence, creating an impressive catalog that they still occasionally tour on. Rickly has also been part of other wild and wooly outfits: He stood in for the singer of legendary vampire-hardcore band Ink & Dagger for a tour, after their singer passed away—you'll hear about that band in this conversation. But most recently, Rickly switched his focus to writing his first novel, which just came out. Someone Who Isn't Me is most definitely not a memoir, though it is slightly more than loosely based on Rickly's experience in being in a band, becoming addicted to heroin, and finding a path to treatment. The other half of this conversation is an old friend and bandmate of Ricky's, Jonah Bayer. Bayer and Rickly were part of the mysterious supergroup United Nations, which put out a bunch of music while keeping most of their identities secret. There's a small but powerful United Nations catalog out there, if you're into confrontational, mysterious hardcore. Bayer is also a journalist and recently started working as a mental-health clinician, which maybe makes him the perfect guy to chat with Rickly about his book. Oh, and Bayer also hosts a really fun podcast with his sister Vanessa Bayer—of Saturday Night Live fame—called How Did We Get Weird that just launched its third season. In this chat, Bayer gets deep with Rickly about Someone Who Isn't Me, diving into the odd structure of the book, whether it made sense to fictionalize his friends, and how to dramatize a psychedelic trip. The two also talk about how “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli fits into Rickly's story, how Ink & Dagger deserves more recognition, and about a Kurt Cobain dream that Rickly once had. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jonah Bayer and Geoff Rickly for chatting. Let's say you are starting a record label. Money is no object, and every artist and band in the world is a free agent. Who would you pick? That's the premise of this week's episode. (31:21) This wholly original idea involves selecting acts that fall into five categories: prestige (they don't stream big but they get great reviews), popular (they don't get great reviews but they stream big), solo artist under the age of 28 (an up-and-comer you can lock in for a long time), band with three or fewer albums (ditto), and sacred cow (an act you sign because you love them). Before Steven and Ian get to the draft, they talk about this weekend's Pitchfork Festival — Ian is going and Steven is not — and their favorite performances from previous festivals (4:44). They also address some non-indie rock topics: The terrible new Jason Aldean song (13:40) and the history of reactionary country hits that crossover into the mainstream for culture war reasons, and the forthcoming "Summer Of '99" cruise (23:46) featuring a reunited Creed plus a head-scratching mix of post-grunge and radio-friendly pop rock from the late '90s.In Recommendation Corner (57:54), Ian talks about the new book by Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly, while Steven chats up the new album by Texas surf-punks Being Dead.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Do you think a rock band can be cursed? Sounds unfeasible to the rational mind, but how else do you explain No Devotion, the group containing ex-members of Lostprophets and sometime Thursday singer Geoff Rickly?Their band was literally born from unspeakable horror, their singer has navigated drug addiction and an extraordinary union with the notorious pharma bro Martin Shkreli – and I'd like to direct you to episode 11 of Shame – also on this feed a few episodes back - if you're interested in more to do with that madness. And there's been muggings and broken legs and… I mean, begone evil spirits! The power of Christ compels you! Few bands deserve more of a break than No Devotion, and, returning after a break of seven years with excellent second album No Oblivion, I thought it was time to call up Geoff for a chat about all of the above. Geoff also reflected on the entire history of the band, from their early days up through their initial breakup and then their 2010s reunion. He reflected on the early 2000s emo/post-hardcore boom that 'Full Collapse' helped kickstart, and the way the scene rose and fell and was later revived with a new generation of bands in the 2010s. He talked about other bands he's collaborated with, like My Chemical Romance and Touche Amore, and much more.   Thursday are playing 'Full Collapse' in full on tour this year, and Geoff's band No Devotion also have a new album due in September via Velocity Records.   The interview featured in this podcast episode originally aired on Vans Channel 66. We're back in superground territory (?) this week as Mark brings the debut album by mysterious, psuedo-anonymous screamo band United Nations. Fronted (at least, on most of the songs, albums and live shows) and partially conceived by post-hardcore legend and Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly, in the early 00s, for a long time he was the only “official” member of the band. When they were sued by the actual United Nations in 2010 around 30 people were listed as being involved with the band, but for the most part Rickly has been the one to do interviews. With a couple of exceptions in more recent years. Because in more recent years, with the release of their second album The Next Four Years in 2014, it was later confirmed that Jonah Bayer and Lukas Previn were also members of the band. That remains the case, with various members of other bands playing live shows with them. In 2017 they released a single called Stairway to Mar-a-lago which features an entirely different vocalist. Meaning the mysterious nature of the band remains somewhat intact. Conceived as a throw back to the chaotic 90s screamo of Orchid, Rites of Spring etc, the band weld together various styles of extreme music to some impressive results. But are they unsung? That's what we try to figure out. Come along on the journey with us.

Sellout Stories: Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason)

Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the only/greatest newsletter about music in the world. Welp, SELLOUT has been out for a week and the response has been so overwhelming. Every morning I wake up to dozens and dozens and dozens of nice messages from you all. Apologies if I haven’t gotten to all of them but I really appreciate the support! I’ve done approximately 9,000 interviews about the book recently if you want to read/listen to any of em. There have been a few new ones I’m probly forgetting. I was interviewed by Mark Hoppus, which kinda blows my mind. He asked me to settle the debate: The Blue Album vs. Pinkerton. Naturally, I panicked and asked him to settle MY debate: Dookie vs. The Blue Album. He chose wisely. (Dookie.)Aaaaaanyway. I mentioned the other day that I was starting an interview series called Sellout Stories, where I expand the major-label tales of people in the book. (My first guest was Chris from Anti-Flag.) Since Texas Is the Reason’s Norman Brannon makes an appearance in the chapter on Jimmy Eat World, talking about how great Clarity is, I figured he should be the second guest and woooo boy what a story his band had! This conversation ended up being so much deeper than I’d expected. We talked a lot about putting mental health first, the added difficulty of being a closeted gay man in the face of rock stardom, and lots of other heavy topics. Also, haircuts. This was a really special chat and I hope you like it. You can listen above or on Spotify, Apple, etc. If you want the short text version, below is the section about Norman that appears in my new photo zine, MAJOR LABEL DEBUT, which you can pick up in my online store.Oh, and if you’re in the NY area, come to Vitus this Saturday! I’ll be in conversation with Geoff Rickly. Non-ticketed. Just show up. I’ll have books for sale. Happy to sign em. Also, the first 20 people who buy a book there will get a FREE photo zine. The first 10 people to buy multiple copies will get a FREE tote bag.SELLOUT is a book about bands releasing their major label debut albums, so technically Texas Is the Reason was ineligible for inclusion. But as far as major-label signings go, the New York band might take the award for all-time closest near miss. The band had people interested in them from their very first show in 1994, says guitarist Norman Brannon. They played six songs in his Manhattan living room for their group of friends, who happened to be members of bands like Youth of Today and Sick of It All, as well as people who ran or worked for record labels. So, there were eyes on them from day one, and they had the chance to go major very early.“At that time in New York City, there were only two streams,” says Brannon. “You were either going to be an indie band or you were going to be a major band. Quicksand, Into Another, Orange 9mm, Sick of It All, CIV, they were all on major labels. So it wasn’t foreign to us because those people were all our friends and they didn’t seem to be having a difficult or miserable time on a major label. I wasn’t super anti-major, but it didn’t feel right.” Wanting more time to figure out what their band was about, Texas Is the Reason shooed away major label A&Rs by locking in a deal with indie Revelation Records for two full-lengths and an EP. “‘That way, all the major labels will leave us alone.’ That’s what we thought,” he says. “But that did not happen. As soon as we signed, they actually got more aggressive. It got crazy.”Major labels pursued the band even harder after their debut EP sold an impressive 30,000 copies for Revelation. The band’s profile kept growing as more and more A&R reps took them out to lunch, bought them groceries, and gave them free CDs. The members started to fall under the major-label spell and finally conceded: Maybe we really are that good. Further bolstering their confidence were the price tags being thrown around. “The highest offer we received was $3.5 million for three albums,” Brannon says. “$500,000 was a non-recoupable signing bonus. They were literally gonna give us half a million just to sign us.”The band whittled the long list of interested suitors down and ultimately agreed to ink a deal with Capitol for $2.3 million. Their lawyer drafted up the paperwork while the band was on tour with the Promise Ring. As soon as they returned home, it’d be ready for signing and they'd be cut a check that day. But the nearer the signing drew, the more Brannon felt like backing out.“I was having a really difficult time in life. I’ve struggled with clinical depression for as long as I can remember, and had suicidal ideation before puberty. 1996 was a particularly difficult year for my depression. I believe it was neurological and situational. The situational aspects were the pressures of being in the band and feeling the weight of people depending on me and feeling uncomfortable with the amount of responsibility I had. On top of that, I was hitting this place in my life where I was starting to realize that I needed to be an out gay man. This was at a time when Jason from the Promise Ring was coming out and he was attacked mercilessly on the Jade Tree message board, so I knew there was risk. So now I’m about to sign a major record deal and if I do that, will I have to stay in the closet?”When he expressed to the rest of the members that he wanted to break up the band, some shared his sentiment while others thought he was out of his mind. They called it quits in 1997 and it caused a rift between them which took some years to mend. When asked if he regrets his decision all these years later, Brannon says no. “Had I signed that contract, I’m not kidding, I would be dead. 100 percent, I cannot stress that enough. ...So how could I possibly regret it?”Order my book, SELLOUT, here: Bookshop | B&N | Amazon | Books-A-Million | GoodreadsCome to the events in New York and Los Angeles.Shop the merch store.Follow me on the internet. Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Danny ends up kind of interviewing me for a decent portion of this episode because he’s just curious and friendly like that. We talk about quite a bit about the similarities and differences of the way creativity and expectations function in both the music and food industries, we discuss cooking at home and I get a bit of a lesson on how to cook in a Wok, and we end with Danny sharing a bit about Narx, his band with Geoff Rickly of Thursday and Chris Conley of Saves the Day. It’s easy to let yourself slip into a spiral while #stayinghome. Sobriety requires some serious internal work but you don’t have to, and nor should you, go at it alone. We connected with Geoff Rickly of the band Thursday to talk about the battle of sobriety— of getting sober and staying sober during these trying times.

At one stage in your life, you've no doubt had an emo phase, which came in many different ways and varieties, whether it be the emotional connection you had to the song about your ex leaving you or the one about your Dad taking off without saying goodbye or the one about loving someone so much it makes you cry... the list goes on but the one things these songs and bands had in common was they were inspired or conceived following the rise to fame of bands like Thursday, who were the pioneers of writing songs about emotions with whiney vocals, scathing screams and heavy riffs. That's why we're stoked (but not too stoked) to reveal this week's co-host on **_Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall_** is one of the giants who started it all, **Geoff** **Rickly**. Join your podcast host **Browny** as he delves into the band's past and finds out if Geoff ever listened to that band who claimed he was their inspiration or if he thinks listening to emo bands/musicians is some sort of band/genre masturbation. He also addresses how getting screwed over by the music industry helped him to become a better person, and business owner with **Collect** **Records **when he teamed up with old mate "Pharma Bro" **Martin ****Shkreli** and how certain clauses always looked out for the best interests of the bands on the roster, surrounding all the drama Shkreli accumulated over the years. Plus there's plenty of emo anthems that'll make you wanna pull the guyliner out of retirement including **My Chemical Romance, The Used, Say Anything, The Beautiful Monument, Hawthorne Heights, Breaking Benjamin** and **The Rasmus** to name a few + New Music from **Parkway** **Drive** and **High** **Tension**. #WoSUATW #GeoffRickly #Thursday #emo #MyChemicalRomance #TheUsed #HawthornHeights #SayAnything #BreakingBenjamin #GoodCharlotte #SimplePlan #Stateside #TheBeautifulMonument #ParkwayDrive #HighTension #TheRasmus #HIM #ToucheAmore #Podcast #MusicPodcast #PostHardcore #Metalcore ##AustralianBands #WallOfSoundAU
