This is one of my favorite episodes ever: Scott O'Neil. At the time, Scott was CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, but he stepped down over the last few weeks to recharge and spend time with his family.  This actually makes the fact that we spent more time talking about his book, Be Where Your Feet Are, that much more relevant.  We cover a lot of ground from teaching and leadership to the power of coaching kid's sports. We talk about the importance of relationships, being a mentor, and making mistakes.  I found this conversation personally powerful and I really enjoyed getting to talk with Scott because at the end of it, I felt you will know both of us better.  Get Scott's book. I stayed up late reading it the night before we talked and it really stuck with me.  Check out everything I'm doing by hitting up my Linktree.  Connect with my friends at Booking Protect. Their data shows that folks are taking up refund protection at a rate that is about double what it was before the pandemic. This tells me people desire the peace of mind that refund protection provides. So talk with Cat, Cath, or Haley!  Get the NPS worksheet I've created with my friends at Eventellect by sending me an email: dave@davewakeman.com. The Eventellect team is in my corner about the power of market research to find out why your customers appreciate you and the work you do and to find ways to deliver more value. So send me an email and get the worksheet.  Take a look at Activate. It is the new email marketing tool by the folks at Activity Stream. Scott O'Neil spent eight years working as the chief executive officer at Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, best known as the owners of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and NHL's New Jersey Devils. Under O'Neil's leadership, HBSE grew into a sports and entertainment franchise that spans two professional teams, an esports business, the owner and operator of the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, along with the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex, the Sixers Innovation Lab and becoming one of the partners in Elevate Sports Ventures, a sports and entertainment agency. After nearly a decade of growth and innovation and almost more awards than one could list, O'Neil also released his first book, "Be Where Your Feet Are," in June. Those successes made it all the more surprising when at the end of June, O'Neil announced that he would be leaving HBSE. Two days after that announcement was made, he joined SportsTravel Senior Editor Matt Traub on the SportsTravel Podcast to discuss what went into the decision, his new book and more about the sports industry. Scott O'Neil has been through extreme ups and downs in his life, but finds joy in the struggle, connections, and lessons learned along the way.    Scott is the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and the author of the book Be Where Your Feet Are. On this episode of Why Not Now?, Scott recounts his complicated feelings following the loss of one of his closest friends to suicide, and how this emotional event inspired him to write the book.   Scott and Amy Jo have an in-depth conversation about mental health and social media's effects on happiness. One of the main themes in Scott's book is that isolation is kryptonite. He urges listeners to ask for help during times of struggle and reach out to loved ones to check on them. Scott shares some exercises he uses to help compartmentalize and connect in order to stay truly present.    Scott also tells Amy Jo about getting fired from his dream job. Because he was no longer consumed with work, Scott says the vacation he took with his family following this was one of the best trips he's ever taken. Scott also talks about his failed startup, losing 15 million dollars, and making 200 phone calls in a few days in order to land a job at the NBA.    Scott and Amy Jo also talk about underestimating what you can accomplish in a year when you have a vision and starting small in order to get into investing. With the shocking news of his best friend's suicide, Philadelphia 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil found himself spiraling as he experienced the true meaning of grief. It was during this time that Scott started to focus on his own mortality and the fragility of life. As part of his healing, Scott started to write about his friend and the many lessons he'd learned in their nearly 3 decades of friendship. The writing was not only healing in the grieving process, but it also helped Scott resolve two sides of himself that were in conflict: his heart and his hard-driving professional life as a competitive Harvard Business School trained sports CEO. In his new book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep You Present, Grounded and Thriving, Scott shares a lineup of lessons he's learned the hard way to offer readers relatable, actionable changes they can make in their lives to create a life of purpose and presence. “Failure is the best teacher. It's just not a fun teacher.”I'm so excited for you to get to know Scott in today's episode of “Courtney, Beyond the Cake” - and not just because he's lived a life on the basketball court and we all know my love of basketball! More importantly, Scott reminds us how important our role as parents and leaders is to developing the productive, positive habits of the younger generation. I think you'll also appreciate the framework, anecdotes, and exercises Scott offers to guide us toward self-discovery. We had the opportunity to talk via Zoom, which usually runs beautifully, but we did have a few moments here and there in today's episode where you'll hear a few glitches. You won't miss much of what Scott says, but I just wanted to give you a little heads up. Enjoy the episode. Scott O'Neil, CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, takes a break from celebrating the Philadelphia 76ers cruising into the 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs to discuss the release of a brand new book called, BE WHERE YOUR FEET ARE. The conversation wasn't about the 76ers success, but instead whether the team is learning as much this year at the top of the Eastern Conference as what the franchise learned when it only won 10 games in a single season. O'Neil explained that he primarily wrote the book to help create the next generation of leaders. He found that the Instagram life we live in that looks perfect is actually not so perfect. O'Neil wanted to share that it's okay and that life is messy; everything will be fine. He opened up and talked about how he has been fired from a high-profile job, ran a company into the ground, was flat broke, and getting foreclosure notices on his house in his life. When bad things happen, there's an incredible opportunity that presents itself. "I'm not ashamed of the failures or the falls or the slips because it's a part of who I am." It was great to hear how important being present is to Scott and why we all need to do a better job putting our phones down from time to time and keep our heads up. Scott also points out that is okay to ask for help and it is important for us to check in on people to make sure they are fine. He even drops a good line from Caddyshack. He also drops the gem that you should keep picking incredible people to work for and that you should not only dream but dream bigger. We finish with a quick chat on blockchain, crypto, and NFTs. Scott joins Kevin to discuss his book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep you Present, Grounded and Thriving. As the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which includes the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils (NHL), he knows you win some you lose some. If you recognize where you are at, you have the opportunity to grow, go outside of your comfort zone, and be more prepared. We are about instant gratification, and we choose to take a long view and ask ourselves what we want to be and who we want to serve; it will change the way we work (for the better). When we’re moving at 115 MPH, we rarely see the wall coming. But it comes for all of us and when it does, we grasp for lessons, for meaning, for purpose. Each moment (good or bad) and each win or loss, provides us an opportunity to learn, and if we choose to take it, that opportunity can change our lives-and the world for the better. The human spirit craves connection. Authenticity. Belonging. Touch. Gratitude. Purpose. We need to make our interactions count. Whether it’s the death of a friend, loss of a job, a bad break-up or the isolation of Covid-19, those who manage to be where their feet are will grow, stretch and emerge stronger, smarter and more prepared as we find peace and gratitude in the pause. Scott O’Neil CEO of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils offers his own story of grief and healing, and shares his most valuable lessons in what keeps him present, grounded and thriving as a father, husband, coach, mentor, and leader. Scott avails his network to share poignant life lessons from an array of people including professional athletes and sports executives, a world-famous Movie Director, Saudi royalty; and his teenage daughters, among many others. His new book Be Where Your Feet Are provides a humbling and vulnerable peek behind the curtain as well as a framework, anecdotes, and exercises to guide the reader towards self-discovery. A gifted storyteller with an uncanny ability and willingness to bare raw emotion, Scott weaves in and out of stories that have left deep imprints on him and are written to lift and inspire. Family, Family, Family It will always be ok. Things will go bad. It will be ok. Anything, anytime - "you can always call, text, FaceTime, no matter what. I am here for you." Scott's 4-part process to become more present: Find perspective Seek authentic feedback Cultivate reflective strength Love your leadership constitution Public failure: Scott started a business with Seth Berger, founder of AND1, basketball shoes. HoopsTV. Raised $14 million from investors… Eventually failed, had to lay off 50 people, including his own brother(!) The good old days are today (scene from the office (Ed Helms)  Andy Bernard: “I wish there was a way to know you're in "the good old days" before you've actually left them.” Scott got fired from his role as President of Madison Square Garden. He says it was because he was "too busy being right instead of being effective." Scott is a change agent and values performance more than experience Watch the Battle at Kruger video (Scott shared this with the team) "To do great things, you have to be confident" Need to focus on "WMI." What's Most Important "Work-life balance does not exist. Beware of the mediocre middle." "Life is about tradeoffs" The most effective leaders seek authentic feedback and are able to hear it. Ask yourself, "Who have you connected to in the last month?" Behaviors of Excellence: Be your authentic self - "Be you. People follow authenticity." Work unreasonably hard. Intellectually curious - "The world is changing so fast." Passionate - "Fall in love with it." All executives at the Philadelphia 76ers are challenged to declare who they are at their core in the form of a leadership constitution. Anyone can—and should—create one by answering the following two questions: 1. I declare that I am... and 2. You can count on me to... Scott's leadership constitution: I declare that I am a passionate and authentic leader of leaders who feels a gravitational pull towards talent and character. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I love people and being part of a team. I get energy from helping others and would give the shirt off my back to a stranger and anything, anytime to a friend. I am family first, high integrity, and surprisingly sensitive change agent who is confident, caring, and intellectually curious. This fuels a competitive drive that at times feels like a chip on my shoulder. You can count on me to bring positive energy into my space. Exude urgency and push you, challenge you, nudge you and raise the bar beyond your expectations, and sometimes what you think reasonable. Laugh with you, cry with you, love you even when you won’t laugh, haven’t cried, and don’t feel loved. Root for you today, every day, and always. Share the most personal of thoughts, emotions, stories, highs, and lows because I am okay with it and who I am. Enjoy the rollercoaster of life, whether we are going forward, backwards and upside down. Drive hard to reach the summit and then quickly start on another mountain. Share wins and take hits for losses

O'Neil is one of the most forward-thinking senior leaders in sport, and he’s renowned for the inspiring working cultures he builds around him - a working culture at the 76ers that has resulted in the franchise consistently topping various NBA commercial tables even with a historically bad team on the court. As CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), he leads the 76ers organisation in the NBA, as its Prudential Center arena, the New Jersey Devils NHL team, the new Sixers Innovation Lab, and esports outfit Team Dignitas. On the conversational agenda: - Onboarding and the the working culture at HBSE and the 76ers; - The importance of language in the business of sport, 'Trust the Process', and what it means to be 'palms up'; - The nuts and bolts of an NBA international trip, and what the 76ers did with the 200 people they brought from Philadelphia to London last week; - Building an international content plan around a cosmopolitan team that is finally coming good; - Forging the next generation of sporting leaders; - NBA China trivia; - The Sixers Innovation Lab - what exactly is it? Visit www.leadersinsport.com for the latest sports industry intelligence and the opportunity to connect with senior leaders from across the global sport business.

He's one of the most accomplished sports business execs. Scott O'Neil is the CEO of the NHL's NJ Devils, NBA's Philadelphia 76'ers AND the Prudential Center. (Yes, all three at the same time.) He's spent time as the President of Madison Square Garden and SVP at the National Basketball Association. I met Scott while working in the NBA and I've always been drawn to his contagious energy and unique leadership style. In this episode, we discuss everything from leadership to company culture to the secret of life - just to name a few of many topics. Show Notes: Scott's Why Not Now? moment happened when he left Madison Square Garden and added a new filter to how he evaluates opportunities on his career path. How Scott continues to grow company revenue despite the team's performance on the court and/or ice. Scott's unique formula for company culture. His goal is to create the greatest place to work in the world. How Scott motivates his employees (the majority are millennials). As a leader, Scott talks about how he manages standing up for what he believes while not falling down the slippery slope of the polarizing political rhetoric. He also shares how he empowers his staff to stand up for what they believe. A large percentage of Scott's leadership team are women. Scott shares his approach to empowering women. Scott shares his experience attending Harvard (also he has delivered a commencement speech!) Tips for running a great meeting. Scott reveals the secret to life. (NBD) How Scott keeps his mind healthy. Scott's current Why Not Now? Pirates or Ninjas, who is tougher according to Scott? What keeps Scott up at night?
