In Old and in Middle English, the practice was to join the time with the preposition, using a hyphen "to-day," and "to-morrow," and "to-night," for instance. As the sense of their use as single notions developed, the two elements were brought together in written language (i.e., to night, to-night, and tonight). Nineteenth-century dictionaries opted for the hyphen in all three words. The OED shows hyphenated examples throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th. Evan Rachel Wood plays the younger version of the Uma Thurman character. Her other novels adapted for film include White Bird in a Blizzard (2014), directed by Gregg Araki and starring Shailene Woodley and Suspicious River (2000), directed by Lynne Stopkewich and starring Molly Parker. Alberto Giacometti "Woman with Her Throat Cut (Femme égorgée)" serves as the ekphrastic inspiration for Kasischke's poem of the same name. View the artwork here. Giacometti completed the sculpture in 1932 and used bronze cast. Dimensions are 22.00 x 87.50 x 53.50 cm (or roughly 8.5 x 34.5 x 21 inches). Lucy Flint writes that the human figure is treated brutally in Giacometti's piece, and the woman appears in insectlike form. Woman with Her Throat Cut "is a particularly vicious image: the body is splayed open, disemboweled, arched in a paroxysm of sex and death. The psychological torment and the sadistic misogyny projected by this sculpture are in startling contrast to the serenity of other contemporaneous pieces by Giacometti, such as Woman Walking." In the final episode of the series on Grandmotherness, Julia speaks with Melissa about how this stage of life reshapes the way we let go, think long-term, and lead beyond our own agenda. Melissa begins by drawing a distinction between motherness and grandmotherness. While both are rooted in care, investment, and hope, grandmotherness introduces a different quality — love with less attachment to outcomes. It is about offering support, guidance, and encouragement, while trusting that things will unfold as they will. The conversation explores how this shift changes the experience of leading. Moving from structured roles to community-based work, Melissa reflects on how grandmotherness allows for a more emergent, less controlled way of leading — one that is not driven by fixed plans or measurable outcomes, but by openness and trust in the process. A central theme in the episode is letting go. From succession to influence, Melissa speaks about the challenge of stepping back — becoming less central, less visible, and allowing others to take ownership. True continuity, she suggests, comes when leadership does not depend on one person, but carries on seamlessly. They also reflect on the importance of thinking beyond immediate results. Grandmotherness invites a longer horizon — planting seeds for futures we may never see, and making decisions that are not centred on personal recognition or short-term success. The conversation touches on the risks of leading without this mindset — from creating overly compliant environments to becoming disconnected from reality. In contrast, grandmotherness encourages a way of leading that is grounded, observant, and quietly influential. Storytelling also emerges as an important thread. Grandmotherness is not about romanticising the past, but about holding and sharing stories honestly — including difficulty, struggle, and identity — so that others can understand where they come from and where they might go. This episode is a reminder that leading is not always about doing more or holding on tighter. Sometimes, it is about stepping back, letting go, and trusting that what you have helped build will continue beyond you. About the Guest Melissa Aratani Kwee is a Singapore-based community builder, social entrepreneur, and Director at Pontiac Land Group. She is the co-founder of Beautiful People, a volunteer-driven initiative that creates mentoring relationships for teenage girls, fostering confidence, skills, and lifelong connections. Trained as a social anthropologist at Harvard University, Melissa has spent her career shaping spaces, conversations, and communities that bring people together across sectors and cultures. She previously served as CEO of NVPC (Towards a City of Good) and has held leadership roles with organisations including the International Women's Forum Singapore and UNIFEM Singapore. Recognised with honours such as the Singapore Youth Award and listed among Forbes Heroes of Philanthropy, Melissa is known for her work in social impact, cross-cultural collaboration, and building inclusive, purpose-driven communities.

Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers on 30 July 1944 in Somerton, St. James Parish, Jamaica, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of reggae's most beloved and influential figures. His parents worked modest jobs on a rural farm, and from a young age, Cliff showed a natural gift for singing. As a child, he sang in his church choir; by his early teens he had moved with his family to Kingston, determined to carve out a career in music. At just 14 years old, Cliff scored his first hit with the self-penned single “Hurricane Hattie”, a song that nods to his own miraculous arrival during a storm. With his early success in Jamaica, he soon caught the attention of producer Leslie Kong, whose Beverly's label would provide a platform for Cliff to record more material and refine his style. In 1965, Cliff followed an invitation from Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, to move to the United Kingdom. While in London, he experimented with combining ska, rocksteady, and soul influences, earning recognition beyond Jamaica. Over the late 1960s, he released key tracks like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and “Vietnam”, the latter gaining admiration for its protest message. A turning point in his career—and in the global recognition of reggae—came in 1972 with the film The Harder They Come, directed by Perry Henzell. Cliff starred as Ivan Martin, a small-time musician who is forced into a life of crime. The movie's gritty realism and its all-star soundtrack, featuring Cliff's vocals on songs such as “Many Rivers to Cross”, “Sitting in Limbo”, and the title track itself, resonated widely. The film is often credited with helping bring reggae to a wider international audience. Though Cliff continued to release music through the 1970s, he also explored his spiritual side—spending time in Africa and embracing Islam, as well as other spiritual practices. In the 1980s, he returned to a more mainstream sound and released Cliff Hanger, winning his first Grammy Award in 1985. The success continued: in 1993, his cover of Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now” for the Cool Runnings movie soundtrack became a global hit, reintroducing his voice to a new generation. Throughout his life, Cliff recorded prolifically—producing over 30 albums. His later work continued to reflect his commitment to social justice: in 2012, his album Rebirth, co-produced with Tim Armstrong of Rancid, won him another Grammy. In 2022, he released Refugees, a deeply humanitarian record inspired by global crises, which he used to voice solidarity with displaced people. Jimmy Cliff's influence extended far beyond his singing. He collaborated with a wide array of artists—from the Rolling Stones to Annie Lennox to Paul Simon—and his songs were covered by many others, underlining the universal appeal of his message.
