Her poem “Battlegrounds” was featured at Academy of American Poets' Poem-a-Day, On Being's Poetry Unbound, and the anthology, Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World (W.W. Norton). She is the director of Women Who Submit and teaches poetry and creative writing with Antioch University, MFA and UCLA Extension. It was April of 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts when police were called to the Marriott at Copley Place after guests on the 20th floor had called to report a woman lying motionless in the doorway to her room. The woman was 25 year old Julisa Brisman, and she was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital. This poem takes place on battlegrounds. The poet — Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo — is at Gettysburg National Military Park, where she wanders around the cemetery searching for the graves of Mexican soldiers. Instead she finds KKK books on display in the park’s visitors gift shop. So much of this poem is about unearthing, and making offerings of devotion and life: the poet makes offerings to her ancestors, but she also makes offerings of water bottles to migrants at border crossings.Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo  is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the author of Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge. Además, conversaron con el psicoterapeuta especializado en adolescentes, Héctor Basile: “tenemos la necesidad de que el Estado y los profesionales difundamos los síntomas que nos hacen pensar que un chico está deprimiéndose”, sostuvo. Por otra parte, en el programa obtuvieron el testimonio de Julisa, mamá de Lara, adolescente que se quitó la vida a los 15 años en el colegio.

Janet O'Shea is Professor of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at UCLA. Author of 'RISK, FAILURE, PLAY', 'At Home in the World: Bharata Natyam on the Global Stage' and the co-editor of the 'Routledge Dance Studies Reader', 2nd edition, her research focuses on corporeality, interdisciplinary exchange, and the politics of everyday life. She is a practitioner of Filipino martial arts, jeet kune do, Brazilian jiu jitsu, kickboxing, and empowerment self-defense. Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo is the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the author of 'Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge' (Sundress Publications 2016). A former Steinbeck Fellow, Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange winner, and Barbara Deming Memorial Fund grantee, she’s received residencies from Hedgebrook, Ragdale, National Parks Arts Foundation and Poetry Foundation and is a member of Macondo Writers’ Workshop. Her work is published in Acentos Review, CALYX, crazyhorse, and American Poetry Review among others. Julisa Wilson is an entrepreneur who began her business to fill a need in promoting young up and coming artist. Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo was named a 2012 Los Angeles Central Library ALOUD Newer Poet and the 2013 Poets & Writers California Writers Exchange poetry winner.
