If you've ever wondered why your offer isn't converting — even though your service is great and the testimonials are solid — this episode is for you. In today's episode, I'm breaking down the real reason people buy: emotion. Not features. Not stats. But the power of a good story. You'll learn how storytelling works on the brain, how brands like Apple and Nike use it masterfully, and most importantly, how you can start mining your everyday moments to create content that connects and sells. Whether you're writing a sales page, crafting an email, or posting on social media, the right story can be the difference between someone scrolling past and someone saying, “YES — I need this.” What You'll Discover in the Episode: -> Why facts tell, but stories sell (and how that works in the brain) -> How even the smallest story (like brushing your dog's teeth!) can influence buying decisions -> What makes stories more trustworthy than testimonials or logos -> Where to find stories in your everyday life (even if you think you have “nothing to share”) -> How to share stories without oversharing -> The different types of stories to use at different points in the customer journey (socials, emails, sales pages) -> Why using other people's stories (case studies, client wins, etc.) is just as powerful as your own Mentioned in This Episode: HerBusiness Network https://her-business.lpages.co/request-an-invitation/?utm_source=Website&utm_medium=General&utm_campaign=membership-waitlist Power Stories by Valarie Khoo https://www.amazon.com.au/Power-Stories-Must-Build-Business-ebook/dp/B008RO96MO/ Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Dr. Robert Cialdini https://www.amazon.com.au/Influence-New-Expanded-Psychology-Persuasion/dp/0063138816 HerBusiness Podcast Ep. 291 – The Psychology of Marketing: How to Get More Clients Saying YES https://herbusiness.com/podcast/the-psychology-of-marketing-how-to-get-more-clients-saying-yes/ Brandon Stanton - Humans of New York https://www.humansofnewyork.com/ Brene Brown - Researcher, author, storyteller https://brenebrown.com/ Amanda Trieger, Naturopath https://www.naturopathicwomancraft.com.au/

As you know, this is a very special episode. We're both at the two year anniversary and the 100th podcast episode, and what a milestone. I'm even surprised and shocked at how much content I've been able to put out into the world through this podcast, and I'm very grateful and humbled and honored that I get to do that. To celebrate this special episode, I wanted to bring in some amazing women around the world who have really been doing this inner journey and work with their nervous system. And I invited these three because they are both so unique and different from each other, and yet, they've all had incredible shifts and insights as they have learned about their nervous system and learned how to work with it, develop a very different relationship with their body and have tools for repair that has allowed them to experience more regulation in their life, and we're going to hear about how that's opened things up for them. Today's podcast episode is about how AI affects women and other power stories. We will be joined by a special guest, Elena Bondarenko, who will enlighten us on the impact of AI on women and society. However, in the field of AI and technology, three myths emerged - Myth 1, AI is gender-neutral and free from bias. Myth 2, AI will replace women in the workforce. And Myth 3, AI cannot be used to address gender disparities. To know the truth behind these myths, stay tuned and gain valuable insights.Show Notes: Being a curious learner, this trait of Elena Bondarenko served as her guide through the fast paced evolving landscape of disruptive technology. Starting a career as a land use attorney, she eventually transformed into the public sector, working for the Downtown Development Authority in Miami. This role exposed her to the crypto and blockchain industries and offered a front-row seat to the talks shaping the future of these transformative technologies. However, Elena also noticed their inherent imperfections, particularly gender bias in AI. Realizing the serious consequences of this issue, especially in the hiring process, Elena voiced her advocacy for responsible AI usage to ensure it does not sustain harmful stereotypes and misinformation. Key points discussed: The capabilities of disruptive technologies in revolutionizing industry standards and frameworks. The world of blockchain and its role in enhancing carbon credit methodologies.Ways on how Web 3.0 and the impending metaverse could surely transform the real estate industry. The necessity for regulatory control to ensure a safe and ethical use of Generative AI.The essential of encouraging critical thinking skills in the pathway to AI-driven development. Leah's first daughter was born still, but this isn't the story of trauma you might be expecting. Supported at home with just her husband and best friend, she says that the somatic experience of that birth was so intact, that it left her feeling the fullness of her power, full of oxytocin, even ecstatic. Leah quickly conceived again after her loss, and under rainbow filled skies on the island of Kauai, freebirthed her second daughter. This one feels really special for me to share because as you will hear quite early on, I have a personal connection to this story! In the thick of it, it may not feel like both powerlessness and power are universal experiences, but we’ve all been there. The guest on this episode talks about how, ultimately, we are in control of feeling into our own power and it really all comes down to the stories we tell ourselves.Dr. Payal Sharma - who studies power and stress in organizations and teaches at the Lee Business School at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas - joins me on the show to chat about power versus powerlessness, posttraumatic growth, and how she shows up in full caring with a mindset of presence.Dr. Sharma’s current research portfolio includes examining power dynamics in the hip hop and rap industry, and gender backlash against agreeable, vulnerable, and empathetic male leaders. She collaborates and brings said expertise to the forefront of ideas around relationship dynamics and personal power in partnership with some other thought leaders you may know of, including Mark Groves and James Silvas. I always learn so much from talking to Dr. Sharma and think you'll enjoy listening to this juicy and empowering episode. But it's really the pathway, I think, to a deeper connection in the work setting and in our lives.”“For me, a cornerstone in any meaningful relationship that I have is if we lean in and we connect. He embraced a “new normal” in becoming an amputee following a misstep over a hurdle while training for the 1996 Olympic Games, after participation in two consecutive Olympic trials. An Oak Park, Ill. native, Register discovered how to “amputate his fear of disability” and founded the U.S. Olympic Committee Military Sport Program in the early 2000s. He has launched a book titled: 10 Stories to Impact Any Leader: Journal Your Way to Leadership Success, as business leaders return to work with their staff amid stressful circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic and the recent unrest in our urban cities. Register teaches others through his “Hurdling Adversity” speeches and podcasts to “amputate their fear and embrace their new normal” as they discover “stories within themselves.” He finds that “it is the personal stories that inspire teams more profoundly with greater impact.”Register is a four-time All-American graduate of University of Arkansas. He served six years in the U.S. Army—including in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and in active-duty with the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program—winning nine gold medals in the Armed Services Competition and two World Military Championships. Register had his left leg amputated after a misstep over a hurdle changed his life. Register hyperextended his knee and severed the popliteal artery. He started swimming in his recovery, made the U.S. Paralympic Team in 1996, and later won a silver medal in the long jump—as he set an American record—and sprinted to fifth in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the U.S. Paralympic Games in Sydney.

Chad McCrary has always had a calling to help people. He just did not know the depth of that calling. He left a job in construction to become a paramedic. And, he was good. Chad’s world would be flipped upside down after a motocross accident would strip him of his ability to walk. He would no longer be able to work as a paramedic. What do you do when your life mission is to help others and now others have to help you. Thank goodness a failed suicide attempt kept him here to encourage and inspire us today. Laura Reed was at her wit's end. She was sitting at the dining room table. A young mother. A father not around. A mouth to feed. Then she had and "awakening." Here what happened next on this episode of Life's New Normal Podcast. Laura relocated from Johannesburg to North Carolina while she was still a child, but her family carried their culture and traditions (as well as their love for writing) with them wherever they went. At nine years old she saw her first poem published in print, and at fourteen, she picked up her first guitar and set her poems to music. The rest of the story is not history, but how her greatness as an artist is born from struggle. This is a powerful episode. You will not need a kleenex. Well, maybe you will, but not because of her story, but because you will cry from what you should have accomplished in life if you just pressed through your struggle. When you have fraud committed against you by a trusted employee, you learn how to stay afloat. In times like these adversity becomes the greatest teacher. Susan Frew has been through a lot. It is her resilience and fighting spirit which is a great attraction to anyone who meets her. Since I have known her, she has been through a tremendous fraud committed against her company. She has endured a surgery that might have ended her ability to speak. And, she has managed to purchase another company! What took the cake for me was in the midst of all this turmoil she still found it necessary to go to Washington DC and fight for her industry....the plumbing industry. The only reason I know this is because 2000 miles away from our homes in Colorado, we bumped into each other in one of our nation's capital cafeterias. You are going to be blown away by this woman's grit and tenacity, as well as her gentle spirit. Susan Frew always fights back. Susan is the author of Puffer Fish Effect. John Register is a catalyst. Corinne Hancock is a woman who is not comfortable unless she is leading people through the most chaotic times in life. Hear her journey from high school missions to causing an inspirational impact around the world. Do not let her small frame and blond hair fool you. She is a fierce warrior who gets it. "People have great intentions to help people. But you had better ask how to help before going to an environment with what you believe are the answers," says Corinne. I caught up with her (as she was on a layover in the United States before heading back out to Uganda) where she is working with a brilliant Ugandan Doctor who has stood up a hospital. Oh, yea, and then she has the Curiosity Project whose mission is to drive social impact by providing health and entrepreneurial opportunities in communities where people have limited access to resources in order to positively impact global health through curiosity, connection and contribution. For the people by the people is where dignity lies. And, that is what Corinne strives for. She just does it in the most chaotic environments. About the host: John Register is a catalyst. Michael Baroni, the General Counsel for Palace Entertainment, is just a nice guy...for an attorney. Don't get me wrong he is a bear in the courtroom, but his litigation is usually done with a smile. I walked into Michael's office and saw a myriad of sports paraphernalia. But what impressed me more was his charitable work. It ranged from Patriots and Paws to the Child Abuse Prevention Center and from the Women's Transitional Living Center to the Orangewood Foundation. Still, he has a 26-year track record of helping to revolutionize companies by implementing comprehensive, operational excellence. His warm smile and genuine interest in the presentation I and my colleague gave on advancing the rights of people with disabilities was more than refreshing. You will be refreshed too when you hear this interview. Enjoy. About the host: John Register is a catalyst. Valerie Khoo is an author, speaker and multi-passionate entrepreneur with several growing businesses under her belt. She is a prolific content creator who has steadily built her public profile over a period of years by personally engaging with her online community, not to mention adding value in the form of words (blog posts), audio (podcasting) and video. I regard Valerie as one of the best content marketers in Australia. Not only that, she also leverages social media brilliantly for her business – the Australian Writers' Centre – as well as for her personal brand. Getting the balance right between business brand and personal brand is difficult; indeed, it's an issue many professionals entrepreneurs face and grapple with. Another issue professionals face when it comes to ‘putting themselves out there' on social media is managing one's professional versus private self on social media.
Valerie Khoo’s story is all about... well… stories! In the modern world of data analysis in business, it is easy to neglect the art of storytelling as part of the marketing mix, so Valerie has tried to address this with her book, Business Power Stories. It actually debuted at number two in the Australian business-book chart (only beaten by Richard Branson), so it was great to be able to get a sneak preview of it on this week’s show. Valerie also founded the National Writing Centre in Australia, which has grown to become an international writing tutorial network that has helped 23,000 students since 2005. Judging by the poor standard of the message on many websites, a lot of businesses could benefit from this kind of training. The book is based around the need for every business to tell eight different power stories, i.e. their ‘product story’ or their ‘customer story’. Here are some of Valerie’s tips for successful storytelling in business: Customer stories are always important because they can strike a chord with the public who are reading, but this can often be more than a simple testimonial. When thinking about a case study, quite simply define the ‘before’, the ‘during’ (i.e., when they were using your product or service), and the ‘after’. Think long and hard about whether to write about yourself in the third or first person. Don’t get hung up on telling stories in chronological order. 80% of sales is based on emotion, so only 20% is based on logic. It is the stories about a person, business or product that conjure the emotion. A constant battle for businesses/people is that they don’t think their story is very interesting. As true as that might be when they think about it themselves, there’s a high chance that some other people will have similar stories so they will be able to identify with it. Also, authenticity is often more important than simply ‘being interesting’. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: How to approach writing an ‘About’ page on a website The importance of frameworks The different types of stories that need to be told The power of targeting a specific audience The most important thing that Jay will tell you is that some of the most successful companies in the world simply started as an idea – something that solved a problem that we could all identify with in everyday life. You don’t need to be able to develop, build or market the concept yourself – the real money is in the idea. So if you look hard enough at all the problems you face in everyday life, you can make yourself a billionaire just by knowing how to solve the problem that no one else has solved yet! Resources mentioned in this episode: Ben’s Business Coaching (http://www.businessassessment.com.au) Valerie’s website (http://www.valeriekhoo.com) Australian writer’s centre (http://www.writerscentre.com.au) Facebook (www.facebook.com/businessbrainfood) Business Brain Food Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood) Twitter (https://twitter.com/bfewtrell) ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes) ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher) The overall message is that telling a story isn’t as intimidating as many people think. There are established frameworks out there that have been proven to work time and time again. All it takes is to understand these frameworks and then fill in the gaps with your own person information, and hey presto, you’ve told your company story! If you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! Until next time, have a profitable day. Cheers, Ben Fewtrell
