It's not uncommon for films to get through a director or two on their way to the screen. In this episode, that's certainly the case. American Gangster might have ended up on the slate of Ridley Scott, but he was the third or fourth name involved. At one stage, Universal was said to have spent $30m on the film in fact, with no hope of getting a single frame of footage shot. Shooting footage wasn't a problem with the low budget Piranha II: The Spawning, nominally the directorial debut of James Cameron. But Cameron was ejected from the film a week or two into shooting - even if the story goes he managed to sneak into the edit suite... Stories of both are told in this episode... Movie of the Year: 1984The TerminatorWelcome to another exciting episode of the Movie of the Year podcast, where we delve into the films that have left an indelible mark on cinematic history. In this episode, our hosts take on the sci-fi classic The Terminator. With special guest Pete Wright from the Marvel Movie Minute, this episode promises a thorough and engaging discussion on one of James Cameron's most iconic works.James Cameron: The Visionary Behind The TerminatorThe episode kicks off with an in-depth look at James Cameron, the mastermind behind The Terminator. Cameron's unique vision and storytelling prowess transformed a modestly budgeted sci-fi thriller into a groundbreaking cinematic experience. The hosts discuss Cameron's early career, his inspirations for the film, and how The Terminator set the stage for his future blockbusters. Before The Terminator, James Cameron was relatively unknown in the industry. He started as a special effects artist and had a brief stint directing Piranha II: The Spawning. However, it was his work on The Terminator that showcased his potential as a filmmaker. Cameron's ability to combine technical skill with compelling storytelling became evident in this film, setting the tone for his future projects. After The Terminator, Cameron's career skyrocketed. He went on to direct a series of highly successful and influential films. Aliens (1986) redefined the sci-fi horror genre, The Abyss (1989) showcased groundbreaking underwater effects, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) revolutionized special effects with its use of CGI. Cameron continued to push the boundaries of filmmaking with Titanic (1997), which won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Director, and Avatar (2009), which became the highest-grossing film of all time and introduced new standards in 3D technology and motion capture.Pete Wright adds insightful commentary on Cameron's directorial style and his ability to blend intense action with thought-provoking themes. The hosts discuss how Cameron's vision and innovation have left a lasting impact on the film industry, making him one of the most influential directors of all time. The Genre of The TerminatorNext, the conversation shifts to the genre of the film. The Terminator is often categorized as a sci-fi action film, but it also incorporates elements of horror and thriller. The hosts explore how the movie's genre-bending approach helped it stand out in the crowded 1980s film landscape. They discuss the film's innovative special effects, suspenseful narrative, and the seamless integration of futuristic concepts with a gritty, present-day setting. Wright offers a comparative analysis with other genre films of the era, highlighting what makes The Terminator a unique and enduring classic.Iconic Scenes: Analysis and ImpactA detailed analysis of iconic scenes from The Terminator highlights their significance and impact. The scene where the Terminator first appears, emerging from a ball of lightning, sets the tone for the relentless, unstoppable force that Schwarzenegger embodies. The hosts discuss the famous "I'll be back" scene, where the Terminator crashes a car into the police station, showcasing the film's blend of suspense and action. Another standout moment is Sarah Connor's transformation from a terrified target to a determined survivor, exemplified in the final showdown in the factory. These scenes not only define the film but also have become ingrained in pop culture. The Movie's Feelings Toward TechnologyA significant portion of the episode is dedicated to exploring The Terminator's complex...

Today on the show we have legendary actor Lance Henriksen. I had the pleasure of work with Lance on my film Red Princess Blues: Genesis and if was a surreal experience.Lance has been in over 300 films through-out his remarkable career. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi, but this is just skimming the surface. An intense, versatile actor as adept at playing clean-cut FBI agents as he is psychotic motorcycle-gang leaders, who can go from portraying soulless, murderous vampires to burned-out, world-weary homicide detectives, Lance Henriksen has starred in a variety of films that have allowed him to stretch his talents just about as far as an actor could possibly hope.He played Awful Knoffel in the TNT original movie EVIL KNIEVEL, directed by John Badham and executive produced by Mel Gibson. Henriksen portrayed Awful Knoffel in this project based on the life of the famed daredevil, played by George Eads. Henriksen starred for three seasons (1996-1999) on Millennium, Fox-TV's critically acclaimed series created by Chris Carter (The X-Files).His performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, landed him three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for "Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series" and a People's Choice Award nomination for "Favorite New TV Male Star."Henriksen was born in New York City. His mother, Margueritte, was a waitress, dance instructor, and model. His father, James Marin Henriksen, who was from Tønsberg, Norway, was a boxer and merchant sailor.Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career off-Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's Three Plays of the Sea. One of his first film appearances was as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, followed by parts in Lumet's NETWORK and PRINCE OF THE CITY.He then appeared in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut, DAMIEN: OMEN II and in Philip Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF, in which he played Mercury astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra.James Cameron cast Henriksen in his first directorial effort, PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING, then used him again in THE TERMINATOR and as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic ALIENS. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. He was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the TNT original film THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.In addition to his abilities as an actor, Henriksen is an accomplished painter and potter. His talent as a ceramist has enabled him to create some of the most unusual ceramic artworks available on the art market today. His new film is called Alpha Rift.Nolan Parthmore was just a regular guy, hanging with friends, working his game store, flirting with his co-worker, then one day, destiny came calling. A courier delivers a mysterious antique helmet with no note or description. When Nolan puts it on, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father. Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Since the Dark Ages, the Noblemen have been guardians against the 13 Devil's Apostles: dark forces escaped from hell and let loose upon on earth. Generations later, it's the heirs of these original knights that possess the power to open the Alpha Rift:the only defense against these supernatural foes.Enjoy my conversation with Lance Henriksen.

You'll hear Robs Daniel and Wallis give an intro to the guy who directed the biggest and third biggest movies of all time, and then we get into the meat of the episode: a review of Cameron's debut movie, Piranha II: The Spawning. For this expedition, the Robs are joined by MJ Smith and Sarah Buddery, hosts of the wonderful podcast Let's Jaws for a Minute. Well, who better to deliver a verdict on Cameron's first fishy foray into film than the creators of a podcast about the ultimate fish movie? Piranha II comes a close second. We... we can't back that up. During a discussion best described as "punchy," Sarah, MJ, and the Robs harpoon what has to be one of the shonkiest movies ever made. There is also discussion of the film's "hands on" executive producer, Ovidio G. Assonitis, who fired Cameron during production. It was a fever dream while making Piranha II: The Spawning that gave James Cameron his idea for a terrifying metal endoskeleton crawling through flames. From that initial idea, he would write a draft, and with the help of Gale Anne Hurd, he would have a script that would sell to Orion, and funding from Hemdale Film Corporation. That script was called The Terminator. Made for a comparatively tiny $6.5 million, The Terminator would surpass all expectations, including that of Orion, and of its star Arnold Schwarzenegger, in a role that he'd admit in later life was his personal favourite character. With practical effects by Stan Winston Studio and Fantasy II, a tightly paced story and taking inspiration from slasher horror, The Terminator terminated the competition on its release in October 1984. It created a franchise, created a star and created a director. Come with me if you want to listen... I would love to hear your thoughts on The Terminator ! GET IN TOUCH.... This week we are talking "Piranha II The Spawning" and this just so happens to be our second James Cameron-directed flick this year... YEP, James Cameron directed this one, well 75% of it until he was fired for taking too many shots. For this one, we brought back our buddy Nick, who has helped us make sense of Munchie, Ghoulies, and more. Nick came prepared with some behind the scene stories and even noticed some parts of Piranha II that would show up in later James Cameron flicks. Piranha II had us discussing flying fish, boating a boat, an odd relationship with Anne and her son, dynamite fishing, and more. This is a video review you can watch at sequelsonly.com/Piranha2 The next sequel that will be discussed is a Friday the 13th even though we don't have any more Friday the 13ths this year and we are doing Part V: A New Beginning. This movie is the Halloween III of the Jason Voorhees saga because it tried something new that a lot of fans love and hate, it's quite the lightning rod. I was lucky enough to interview the Final Girl from it, our 1st Friday the 13th Survivor, Pam Roberts herself actress Melanie Kinnaman. Melanie talked about growing up in Boston, becoming a dancer in NYC, doing broadway and off broadway, her big-time commercials she did, landing Friday the 13th, a wild story about "Best of the Best", and more. I loved talking to Melanie about her career and we had a lot of laughs. The next sequel we are reviewing is "Piranha II: The Spawning” and for it, I interviewed Actress, Singer, and Activist Carole Davis. Carole grew up with her first love of singing where she was singing all over the world, but then after going to an audition just to support a friend, she was called in to audition and got it. The movie didn't matter because she chose most of her roles based on where they were being shot. Carole was in so many great movies like Mannequin, The Flamingo Kid, The Shrimp on the Barbie, and more. But, I also enjoyed hearing about her singing career which includes stories involving Prince, getting the job as singing the end credit song for "Love Potion no. 9" (I linked it below for you to listen to because it's awesome), and more. Amazing chat! This has an unedited video interview you can watch at sequelsonly.com/caroledavis Links mentioned in this episode: Carole's IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0204316/ Carole's Love Potion no. 9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXUa2XhQjC0 Next up is our review of "Piranha II: The Spawning", which is free on Youtube, we watch the Director's Cut. This week we are talking "The Last Sharknado: It's About Time" which I went thinking this was the 3rd film in the series, but sadly mistaken. This is a sequel that took a sorta joke and turned it into a franchise that people love, Jamie not so much. We discussed the main plot of the movie is wrong, the time traveling, the many borrowed movie quotes, Dee Snider crushing it, and so much more. These sharknados seem to follow Fin and the gang, but you be the judge. This is a video review you can watch at sequelsonly.com/Sharknado6 The next sequel that will be discussed next is "Piranha II: The Spawning" which is directed by James Cameron. This movie got me the chance to chat with an actress who loved in Mannequin and The Flamingo Kid, Actress Carole Davis. Carole talked about how she sorta accidentally got into acting, her amazing singing career that includes singing the end title credits for "Love Potion no. 9" starring Sandra Bullock plus a story involving Prince that you'll have to hear to believe. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD.Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father.Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not.

James Cameron took the helm from Ridley Scott, and made this sequel into something that complimented and expanded upon the masterful original. With more of a Sci-Fi action feel, the director of Avatar, the two best Terminator films and Piranha II: The Spawning chose to focus on humorous machismo, strong female characters, and a socio-political, anti-military, anti-corporate agenda… it would not be the last time. Once again we tried to be as serious as possible, once again we failed, hence the multitude of outtakes at the end which include at least one of us in the grip of hysterics. The story for Piranha II doesn't connect to Piranha save for a reference to fish used as bioweapons for a top-secret U.S. Army experiment.  Those experiments continued into cross-breeding piranhas with grunions and flying fish to make them dangerous in both air and water. A ship has sunk and a container of their eggs breaks open in the area near Club Elysium, a posh Jamaican resort, on the verge of their annual Fish Fry Beach Festival, when the grunions hatch and walk upon the shore. That's where Anne (Tricia O'Neil), a marine biologist, works as a scuba instructor. Anne's separated husband Steve (Lance Henriksen) is a cop in the seaside town. Steve's a little jealous when Anne enters into a fling with a mysterious resort resident, Tyler Sherman (Steve Marachuk). When human bodies are found in a gruesome, half-eaten state, they suspect other summer frolickers are in danger.  Too bad Club Elysium won't shut down the highly attended festival. James Cameron's directorial debut.

Episode 145: BAD BREW Piranha II: The Spawning Piranhas are any of several small South American freshwater fishes that eat other fish and sometimes plants, but occasionally also attack humans and other large animals that enter the water. Piranha 2: The Spawning is an American film, shot in Italy and Jamaica by a Canadian, with a cast of actors who look suspiciously like other actors, that tells the story of mutated Piranhas that can survive in the ocean, fly like birds, and breath out of water. If you're not on board yet, just know that it is also chock full of sexual tension.... between a mother and son. We don't really feel the need to make too many jokes about this week's Bad Brew feature, because the description of the film pretty much speaks for itself. So grab a sixer BJ's Piranha Pale Ale, and sink your teeth into Piranha 2: The Spawning to find out if it can stay afloat in a sea of scrutiny, or if it's dead in the water. Follow us! Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) is technically the directorial debut of James Cameron, but he doesn’t talk about it much and neither does anyone else involved in the production. The film does feature flying piranha though. That’s cool, right? Too bad the movie doesn’t bother to think it’s cool.

This week shark-fanatic Kate Hearn picks the theme of sea monsters, starting with the biggest, baddest great white shark around - Bruce himself - in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) SPOILERS INCLUDED. We look at the characterisations, the performances, the context, the legacy and the trivia. Then, from the same director as Titanic and Avatar (according to the DVD) we have Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) which we all struggle to be nice about but do extract a few choice moments. Finally, George P. Cosmatos turns a lot of De Laurentis money into a mashup of other people’s movies in Leviathan (1989) with a great cast, crew, special effects, composer, writers - none of whom seem to have brought anything original. Also: The Meg (2018). Lips and assholes. Martha’s Vineyard? Martha! We compare scars. Joe goes off on Pan & Scan *again*. We discover the hill that Dee will die on: “This is what happens…”. Boop the snoot. “As the money goes up, the art goes down.” Do police boats have sirens? Getting jiggy in a dinghy. Sexism at the bottom of the ocean. Shooting dry for wet. WTF sharks?! Harbinger Down (2015). We play a game of “Wait, seriously?”

[Digital Gonzo 2012] (Note: This episode has been significantly improved with a 2021 Re-Edit that can be found on the main School of Movies feed) James Cameron took the helm and made this sequel into something that complimented and expanded upon the masterful original. With more of a Sci-Fi action feel, the director of Avatar, the only great Terminator films and Piranha II: The Spawning chose to focus on humorous machismo, strong female characters, and a socio-political, anti-military, anti-corporate agenda… it would not be the last time. Once again we tried to be as serious as possible, once again we failed, hence the multitude of outtakes at the end which include at least one of us in the grip of hysterics.
