We begin a new year of the show this week, and kick off the campaign by welcoming These Estates and Oiseaux musician and Briarpatch publisher John Cameron for an unseen selection from his collection, a prescient political satire that is now 52 years old but could release today with few alterations and still feel timely. It's 1972's The Candidate, directed by Michael Ritchie, and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas, Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson and Michael Lerner. It's a comedy without any jokes that still manages to be fairly funny, at least when its bleak political outlook doesn't feel equal parts harrowing and deadly accurate. Plus: J Mo's hooked on Pocket Card Jockey, while Hayley and John are willing to die for Casino Regina. Other works discussed on this episode include Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Aquaman & The Last Kingdom, Beau Is Afraid, The Devils, Go, Ocean's Eleven, Bulworth, Fletch, Fletch Lives, season 6 of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation, The Thick of It, In The Loop, Death of Stalin, The Newsroom (CBC), The Ides of March, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Lions For Lambs among many more. If you'd like to watch The Candidate before listening to our discussion, some maniac has posted the entire movie for free on YouTube. And we thank them. We'll be back next week as Year 2 on the pod continues with a shot at redemption for two top stars who have recently wronged us on the pod by being in movies we watched that were not good. Yes, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer can completely redeem themselves as we'll be back to watch 1994's Tombstone, a 90s VHS classic that somehow both hosts have never seen before. It's currently streaming on Disney+ if you want to watch it, and of course we're wrapping up the month the week after with our monthly canon submission, Christopher Nolan's TENET. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Greetings! Adam and Aidan, late of Pablo Fanques Fair (What a scene!), discuss Greg Mottola's Confess, Fletch (2022), the third movie adaption from Gregory McDonald's Fletch novels. Most people remember Chevy Chase's ‘80s run at the character, with the slapsticky but enjoyable Fletch (1985) and the not-so-enjoyable Fletch Lives (1989). In place of Chase, Jon Hamm takes up the role of Irwin M. Fletcher, turning in a version of the character who bears a much closer resemblance to McDonald's novels, albeit a bit older.Did Adam and Aidan enjoy Confess, Fletch? Why yes they did. If you're interested in the particulars of their enjoyment, as well as a general discussion on the Fletch run in print and on screen, listen below or find it on your podmachine of choice.

The last time Fletch hit the screens was back in 1989's Fletch Lives, the last to feature Chevy Chase in the title role. Unlike the previous big screen appearance, that movie wasn't based on any of the novels written by Gregory McDonald. And it showed. Over the years there have been attempts to start up the franchise again, one being an adaptation of McDonalds prequel novel Fletch Won which would have been spearheaded by Kevin Smith and was rumored to star either Jae Lee or Ben Affleck in the starring role. That version of Fletch never came to fruition. But it would appear Fletch has finally returned. This time in the guise of Mad Men star Jon Hamm.  In this episode Bret and Andrew discuss their first takes on the trailer for Confess Fletch. Based on the second novel in Gregory McDonalds series.  And from first take Hamm's version of the character is closer to the character that McDonald wrote than the one Chevy Chase played. Which was basically just Chevy Chase as Chevy Chase. So it's time for Fletch to Confess. But who knows what the outcome will be.

Welcome back to LIKEITORNOT & our infamous ROADHOUSE Editions! This one took place last week, in true ROADHOUSE fashion, when Leo and I met up for the tote bags and to do a little episode on our collab. It was the same night QJ was dj'n for Bxmmer at JAZZBONES for the Aaron Carter show, no cap. We'd been lounging in the Flea all day, taking care of other business, when Baloogz aka SPLASH himself, rolls up at closing time with slushies, sandals & sunglasses, and NO I.D.! The man had no true destination so I invited him to sit down with us for a quick episode. What ensued was history. I learned about a 3am gyro spot on 6th Ave but haven't seen if it's tru yet. I talk about GYRO ZONE cause it's the best and we play the whole GIMME INDIE ROCK album by Matson, Khris P & Glenn, also engineered by Splash. We show love to TBG & Domestic Terrorizm 2 & Baloogz delves in to some behind the scenes stuff about he and Perry Porters forthcoming album that is truly highly anticipated. We talk about Scotty Hyp and the Fletch Lives mixtape and all the heavy hitters on there and s/o the man himself, Awall aka 2piece and BLOCKREPP, as a whole. We talk about Outpost Sandwiches again and may other tidbits of info you don't want to miss, LIKEITORNOT, thank y'all for tuning in and sticking with us!

In 1986, Director Michael Ritchie followed up Fletch, starring Chevy Chase, with The Golden Child, starring Eddie Murphy. So sayeth The Golden Child, every 1000 years, a golden child is born, but some people can't have nice things, and when ne'er-do-wellers set their mind to it, they can evil the shit out of any golden situation. And so we find Sardo Numspa kidnapping and attempting to murder a poor little boy (played by a little girl), and Chandler Jarrell (Murphy) and Kee Nang (Charlotte Lewis) must set out to rescue the child and see how well sunlight shines into basements. The Golden Child made $150M off of a $25M budget but was met with skepticism by non-believers and pretty much everyone else too. As such, while Ritchie's Fletch was to be followed up by Fletch Lives, there was not quite as much outcry for The Golden Child 2: The Golden God. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate Claymation, Eddie Murphy's charm, and the good guy's decision to retrieve the Ajanti Dagger in the first place, and see if this one is a golden good time or a giant pile of shit made of fool's gold.

The Wit And Wisdom Of Legendary Actor & Comedian Richard Belzer (Original broadcast 2017) The Outer Limits of Inner Truth sits down with legendary actor, brilliant comedian and bestselling author Richard Belzer. Belzer is well known for his portrayal of Detective John Munch, one of the longest-running roles in television history. After the introspective interview, Mr. Belzer is analyzed by Psychic Medium Kerrie O’Connor and Astrologer Constance Stellas. We learn about Mr. Belzer’s past-lives as well as his mission here on earth. Born in Connecticut in 1944, Richard Belzer wound his way toward New York City, and by the early 1970s had established himself on the comedy scene with his biting wit. After two decades’ worth of appearances onstage, in television and in film, in 1993 he landed the role for which he is best known, as Detective John Munch in the hit NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street. Belzer’s Munch was then incorporated into the crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a role that has lasted for more than 15 seasons. During this period, Belzer has also appeared in numerous other TV series and films and has also authored several conspiracy-theory themed books. Unruly Richard Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 4, 1944, and displayed a penchant for mischief early on. Though these tendencies would serve him well in his later career, as a youth they led to expulsions from numerous schools, including Dean College, which he attended briefly before being asked to leave following his participation in several student demonstrations. The early deaths of his parents only contributed to the chaos that neither a stint in the army, numerous day jobs nor his first marriage could tame. However, by the early 1970s, Belzer’s wanderings took him to New York City, where his rabble-rousing finally proved an asset, earning him a spot in the Channel One sketch-comedy group, which included rising comedic star Chevy Chase and resulted in Belzer’s screen debut in its 1974 film The Groove Tube. Meanwhile, Belzer was becoming a regular at New York City comedy clubs, sharpening his biting, sarcastic wit, eventually becoming the regular emcee at Catch a Rising Star and landing a role in the 1975 off-Broadway production of the National Lampoon stage show. When fellow cast members—including Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner—went on to form the core of Saturday Night Live! Belzer followed, with three appearances on the program between 1976 and 1978, a period during which Belzer’s second marriage came and went. Branching Out By the early 1980s, Belzer’s growing network of connections—which included his cousin Henry Winkler—helped his career get to the next level, with small parts in such iconic films of the era as Fame (1980), Author! Author! (1982) and Scarface (1983). His comic endeavors continued to flourish as well, leading to the Cinemax series The Richard Belzer Show in 1984 and a spot as the host of the late-night television show Hot Properties, on which he was once famously knocked unconscious by wrestler Hulk Hogan, whom he later sued. Wrestling injuries aside, by the latter half of the decade things were looking up for Belzer, who married actress Harlee McBride and began his career as an author with the satirical How to Be a Stand-Up Comic. He also continued to land parts in television and film, including on the series Miami Vice and The Flash and in Fletch Lives (1987) and Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), as well as making regular stand-up appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman. Becoming John Munch Sarcastic, conspiratorial, self-deprecating and smooth, in 1993 Belzer was able to infuse his real-life personality into the fictional role for which he is best known—as Detective John Munch. Created for the much-acclaimed NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, Belzer’s Detective Munch served as the comic relief to Ned Beatty’s gruff Detective Stanley Bolander for the show’s successful seven-season run. However, by the time Homicide came to an end in 1999, the character had become so popular that—after several cameos in earlier seasons—it was incorporated permanently into Dick Wolf’s Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit. Appearing as the partner of Ice-T’s Detective Tutuola, Belzer’s Detective John Munch remained a central character on the popular show for 15 seasons before it was retired in 2013, making it one of the longest-running roles in television history. During this period, Belzer also appeared as Munch on several other series, including Sesame Street, The X-Files, The Wire and 30 Rock, among others. In May 2016, Belzer and Munch returned to Law & Order: SVU in a guest appearance for a new episode. Lone Nut Despite the demands of his duties as Detective John Munch, Belzer has simultaneously maintained his successful callings as a comedian, author and conspiracy theorist. In 1997 he starred in the HBO comedy special Richard Belzer: Another Lone Nut, and he has been a regular guest on the Howard Stern Show. He was cast as the president in the 1998 horror film Species II and appeared as himself in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon (1999). Among his literary offerings are the novels I Am Not a Cop (2008) and I Am Not a Psychic (2009), as well as the conspiracy-theory titles Hit List: An In-Depth Investigation into the Mysterious Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Assassination (2013), Dead Wrong (2013) and Someone Is Hiding Something: What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370? (2015). He also hosts the conspiracy-centered series The Belzer Connection and the popular YouTube series Richard Belzer’s Conversation. Website:

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Sequels can be hit or miss but return commissioner Adam decided to take the chance on the 1989 sequel to a classic Chevy Chase film, “Fletch Lives.” A critical failure but box office success, “Fletch Lives” revives the role of the costume-wearing reporter as he goes to Louisiana to claim a surprise inheritance. The movie harkens back to a time of journalism past where reporters made actual money, had company cars, and endless supplies of disguises. From the cover art to jaw-dropping musical numbers, the Shat hosts were surprised by many of the movie's turns including totally underappreciated actors, completely incorrect accents, and a seemingly angry leading man. Big D, Gene, and Ash try their best to answer the many questions “Fletch Lives” leaves with its viewer. Was any woman in this film attracted to Chevy Chase? Does God want his followers to worship him by going to amusement parks? And was Fletch fooling anyone with those get-ups? Fletch (Chevy Chase) quits his job as an investigative reporter when he learns he has inherited his aunt's expansive plantation estate in Louisiana called Belle Isle.  Unfortunately, he arrives to find that the property is completely run down through many years of lack of upkeep, though there are offers for the land from mysterious sources. When the executor of the will ends up dead in Fletch's bed, he becomes the top suspect in the murder. He soon learns that the reason for foul play is likely because someone out there desperately wants Fletch off of the property, with the main suspect being a local television evangelist Jimmy Lee Farnsworth (R. Lee Ermey), who has plans for the land to expand his Bible-based theme park. Fletch decides to put his nose for sleuthing to good use to get to the bottom of who wants the land bad enough to be willing to kill for it, and why. The on April 19 47 crew members of the USS Iowa died in an explosion in the Number Two gun turret. The biggest news of this timeframe was the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The ship struck the Bligh Reef, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil into the sound. Duo to its remote location, the spill cover 1,300 miles of coastline and 11,000 square miles of ocean. The National Road began in 1751 as the Braddock Road, which ran from Fort Cumberland, Maryland, which is navigable limit of the Potomac River, to Fort Duquesne at the site of modern-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson authorized construction of a road between the Potomac and Ohio River at what is now Wheeling, West Virginia. Construction began in 1811 and the road reached Wheeling in 1818. Private toll roads were constructed connecting the eastern terminus to Baltimore, while in 1820, Congress approved extending the road to St. Louis on the Mississippi River. However the road never reached St. Louis, as Congressional-funded road building stopped in 1839. The western terminus of the road ended up at Vandalia, Illinois. Construction and maintenance was transferred to the states. Virginia built the Wheeling Suspension Bridge in 1849, which was at the time the world’s longest bridge at 1,010 feet between towers. It is the oldest vehicular suspension bridge still in use in the United States. The National Road eventually became part of the National Old Trails Road, which extended from New York City to San Francisco. In 1927, the road was designated as U.S. Highway 40. Most of its route is now paralleled by Interstate 70. Our question: Name the current state capitals The National Road ran through? Today is Youth Day in Taiwan and Boganda Day in Central African Republic. It’s unofficially Manatee Appreciation Day, National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day and National Lemon Chiffon Cake Day. It’s the birthday of comedian and writer Eric Idle, who is 74; basketball legend Walt Frazier, who is 72; and actress Amy Sedaris, who is 56. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1989, the top song in the U.S. was “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles. The No. 1 movie was “Fletch Lives,” while the novel “The Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: When did Pan Am go out of business? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. A sequel that's worth watching! Thank you Chevy Chase. It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I am NOT a big man.
