In the heat and the steam of the city, Al, Ryan & Louie discuss "Mama," one of Genesis' most bizarre songs and the music video where Phil Collins freaked generations of children before "The Land of Confusion" did.
We are continuing #New-woirvember 2 with the noir-adjacent, FOXTROT, from 1976. It's not often you find this much star power in a New World Pictures joint. FOXTROT stars Peter O'Toole (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA), Charlotte Rampling (DUNE) and Max von Sydow (THE EXORCIST). They're just a bunch of fun, outgoing people giving it a go on a desert island as World War 2 looms on the horizon. That isn't true at all, Liviu (O'Toole) and Julia (Rampling) are in a miserable marriage and Larsen (Sydow) is a disgruntled employee wishing his boss would just die already. As it turns out, living on a desert island is just what the doctor ordered. Literally. They spend the day eating marmalade and drinking Brandy and wine. They race sand crabs, see how long they can hold their breath underwater and watch movies in their tent theater. They even have guests stop by and by "stop by" we mean take a weeks-long journey by boat for a weekend of partying and shooting all the seals on the island. Fun! We attempt to unpack the many loose ends this movie proposes but never resolves. For example, how do people so unprepared for island living make it so long on a desert island? Marc talks about pooping.... again. We struggle to pronounce Jorge Luke's character name (Eusebio) so we just call him "Sussudio". Ryan's research uncovers how Roger Corman packaged and re-packaged this movie to be something it is not. FOXTROT is part British drama, a bit of noir and a dash of John Carpenter's THE THING. All roads return to THE THING. All. Roads.
A list of rock's most hated songs and albums includes Aerosmith's"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing", "Sussudio" by Phil Collins, and the soundtrack for 1978's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We're turning back the dial to 1985, when Phil Collins ruled the charts with his smash-hit album No Jacket Required. Packed with iconic tracks like “Sussudio” and “One More Night,” this record didn't just dominate radio, it helped define the sound of an era. We'll dig into the making of the album, its massive commercial success, and why it still sparks conversation (and maybe a little air-drumming) nearly four decades later. In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. With creative savvy and a touch of fandom, Tim explains how he secured a heartfelt Cameo from Aubrey Edwards, the renowned referee from All Elite Wrestling. Celebrating the milestone of reaching 400 episodes, Aubrey Edwards shared some kind words about Friends Talking Nerdy. Tim dives into the process—using the Cameo platform—to connect with a wrestling personality who is not only a fan but also a respected figure in the industry. This segment offers a fun peek into the strategic networking and passion that fuels the podcast's community spirit.3. Wrestling, Ethics, and the Netflix Docuseries “Mr. McMahon”The episode then turns its focus to the world of professional wrestling with an in-depth discussion on the Netflix documentary “Mr. McMahon.” Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dissect the film's portrayal of Vince McMahon's tumultuous career and the various controversies that have shadowed his legacy. The hosts debate the ethical dilemmas wrestling fans face as they reconcile their admiration for the spectacle with the problematic aspects of McMahon's history. Their discussion is both analytical and impassioned, weighing the documentary's revelations against the cultural mythos of wrestling. Listeners are invited to reflect on the complexities of fandom—how one can celebrate the art of wrestling while critically engaging with its darker undercurrents. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. In 1985, Phil Collins could do no wrong. His album No Jacket Required would eventually hit the top spot in the US and the UK. He'd also have the top album and top song on both sides of the Atlantic. He won a Grammy for Against All Odds (which would hit #1), his duet with Philip Bailey, Easy Lover, was a smash hit around the world and hit duet with Marilyn Martin, Separate Lives, would also go to #1. And after a world tour to support his 25 million selling album No Jacket Required, he played Live Aid in London with Sting and then jumped the Concorde to make it to the US and played RFK with Eric Clapton and a reunited Led Zeppelin. Plus he was on Miami Vice. The man was unstoppable. As No Jacket Required turns 40, we decided to analyze it track by track. Though Collins proved he could navigate the mid-80s recording styles without getting too cheesy on tracks like Sussudio and Inside Out, there are others that aren't great given the strength of the hits like Only You and I Know and I Don't Wanna Know. The album would sell over 12 million in the US alone thanks to hits like Sussudio and the video for Take Me Home not only gave him clout as a bonafide international star but also kept the album selling well into 1986. Phil has received a lot of backlash in latter days due to the fact that he was everywhere in the 80s - chart topping with every Genesis album, every solo record, every duet or movie soundtrack song, every tour, every TV appearance, every music video. Does he deserve the criticism he gets or did he just make the most of his opportunities he was given? We debate that and more on this surely to be divisive episode. A Groovy Kind of Love“, „Another Day in Paradise“, „I Can't Dance“.

Peters Playlist für Phil Collins: Face Value (1981): In the air tonight, This must be love, Behind the lines, Hand in hand, Missed again, If leaving me is easy Hello, I must be going! (1982): I don't care anymore, I cannot believe it's true, Thru these walls Against All Odds (Soundtrack, 1984): Against all odds (Take a look at me now) No Jacket Required (1985): Sussudio, One more night, Take me home, We said hello goodbye Buster (Soundtrack, 1988): Two hearts But seriously…(1989): Something happened on the way to heaven, I wish it would rain down, Another day in paradise Serious Hits…Live (1990) Both Sides (1993): Can't turn back the years, Everyday Dance Into The Light (1996): Dance into the light, Wear my hat Tarzan (Soundtrack, 1999): You'll be in my heart Mit Brand X: Morrocan Roll (1977): Sun in the night, Hate zone Product (1979): Don't make waves, Soho

The 1985 hit from Phil Collins with the mysterious title. Is it a simple story of youthful infatuation or is it much more metaphorical? Is SUSSUDIO the name of Apple's next virtual assistant or marital aid? Can you get it to spell "SHELL OIL" and other naughtier words upside-down on its LCD display? Is SUSSUDIO a post-hypnosis trigger-word? Black magic? Should it have been (badly) sung as a fairy-tale about a wooden boy? What does Lenny think? How do the side subjects of World War II airforce banter, semaphore and watch-faces, and curiously-named bakeries come into this? David Letterman's investigative probe. The dark shadow of AMERICAN PSYCHO. What sort of baldness did Phil and Bill Bailey experience? Is SUSSUDIO a name or a word anyway? Night-clubs based on sarcasm and murder? How much should a vodka-lime-soda cost? Is a jacket required? What's gone wrong with a youth jazz-band? Air-fryers - are they any good? Would you like to appear (well, vocally) on the show? Do you have a pop song or ear-worm from the SMOOTH FM genre that's infested your mind and needs to be investigated? Visit this page https://speakpipe.com/lyrics to record us your own voicemail hot-take on your specific smooth song of suckiness. You could be on a future episode! Let's talk about the song, "Sussudio" from the album No Jacket Required. What are your thoughts on this tune... most people love it, but I was surprise to learn that no everyone does!
Old Philliam "Tarzan OST" Collins returns to the pod this week to tell us all that jackets are no longer required. Andrew and Dan reminisce about early-2000s VH1 programming, debate whether a Prince-ripoff is still good because it sounds like Prince, and try to decode who the hell Sussudio is.
FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM: @PODONLANSDOWNE We were pleased to welcome friend of the program Ben Porter (Twitter @Ben13Porter) onto the program this week! We just sorta riffed about awesome baseball slang, nicknames, and phrases for an hour. Baseball's got great terminology--we wanted to celebrate that on the show. There may or may not have been a lot of talk about regions south of the belt, you'll have to tune in and find out for yourself. BUT FIRST: The Red Sox are on a roll! We--including our international correspondent Jake--dived into their recent sweeps of the Tigers and Guardians, how the team can keep up their hot streak as they enter a challenging stretch of games to wrap up the first half of the season, and more. We also took a peak at some potential trade ideas that have been thrown around, and who the Red Sox might make a move for come deadline day. Opening song is "Baseball" by Hippo Campus, closing song is "Soul Bossa Nova" by (and I did not know this until today!) Quincy Jones. "Take My Out To The Ballgame" from Ken Burns' documentary series Baseball was also used, along with "Sussudio" by Phil Collins.
Michael tells the story of the iconic UK drummer/singer-songwriter's 1985 nonsensical pop smash "Sussudio." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? We sure can! James and Connor are taking on Phil Collins' most successful solo record: No Jacket Required! It's a more upbeat outing than his first two records, with peppy dance pop anthems like Sussudio, I Don't Wanna Know, and Who Said I Would alongside the occasional power ballad like Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore. We'll figure out why this Honorary Texan looks so wet on the album cover, which famous musician fired him from a drumming gig, and why he might have anonymously taken on the role of a chocolate-peddling ape. This actor, Genesis drummer and frontman, and newly-inducted Spin It Legend has plenty of surprises in store, and we won't even require that you wear a jacket. Su-Su-Sussudio! Keep Spinning at www.SpinItPod.com!Thanks for listening! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On episode 13 of Past Prime, Steve and Matty return to 1985, when a thirty four year old, mullet-curious drummer, who loved Hawaiian shirts and Motown, ruled the airwaves. We know what you're saying -- this album is not "Past Prime" -- it's the very definition of "prime!" Maybe so. It produced number one hits. It won Grammys. It sold tens of millions of copies. It landed Collins on the mountaintop, alongside more telegenic Pop stars like MJ, Prince, Madonna and Sting. But critics did not abide. In fact, Phil Collins, himself, doesn't even think it's his best work. Moreover, in spite of its popularity, the album has basically been erased from the airwaves. When was the last time you heard "Sussudio," "Take Me Home" or "Don't Lose My Number?" Steve theorizes that Phil's mixture of horns, drums and synth programming literally went beyond Pop -- beyond prime. And, in that way, it went to Past Prime. Matty, is less convinced. While he loves several of the songs and was enamored of Phil's "talented Dad" vibe, he's less enchanted by the relentless "Jazzercise Rock" on the album's deep cuts. After a frisky battle, our co-hosts move on to unite in their assessment of Collins' 1993 one man show, "Both Sides." Whereas "No Jacket" pushed into the stratosphere, beyond Prime, "Both Sides" is the sad, lonely diary entry of a middle-aged man. It features eleven, glacially slow, sad-sack tracks -- most of them over six minutes in length. And while none of those songs are entitled "Can I Smell Your Hair," they all could be. It's Phil's own favorite solo album. It's also perhaps the very definition of Past Prime. Get your white linen pants, your bold, short-sleeved collared shirts and your Casios ready. It goes without saying, however -- jackets are optional for this one. To read more about Phil Collins "No Jacket Required," check out the full essay at Past Prime.
Barry and Abigail discuss So by Peter Gabriel and sample Waimea Red, Pono Life, and POG Hazy IPA from Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii. Barry's first exposure to this album was the music video for Sledgehammer. Abigail's knowledge of Phil Collins and Genesis comes from the Tarzan soundtrack, which Phil Collins wrote. Barry incorrectly remembered that Sussudio by Phil Collins was knocked out of the Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot by Sledgehammer; in fact, it was Invisible Touch by Genesis that Sledgehammer replaced. Mercy Street was dedicated to Anne Sexton and inspired by her poem 45 Mercy Street. Read more about Stanley Milgram's experiments, or listen to a very nuanced debunking of the experiment's cultural narrative by You're Wrong About, one of Abigail's favorite podcasts. It was on this day in 1985 that the video for "Sussudio" by the English singer-songwriter, Phil Collins, entered heavy rotation on MTV. On Today's "A Day in the Life", we uncover the origins of "Sussudio" and explore its relationship to Prince's "1999" and its connection to Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho".
Just say the word! You know...Sussudio! Amanda Duarte (Dead Darlings) is with Sharon this time, showing the guest star chair who's boss. The two discuss the ubiquity of weed in Brooklyn, and how those who peak in high school should not expect any better. Multiple kinds of quick deaths are covered as well. Likewise the faux pas of wearing pantyhose as tights. Then they wind things up deciding for whom they should each be a backup singer. (SPOILER: Sharon's headed overnight to Georgia...)
