In this celebratory and multifaceted episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into an eclectic mix of topics that blend music nostalgia, behind-the-scenes celebrity moments, and the heated debates of wrestling culture.1. Revisiting 1985: The Ultimate Musical ThrowbackThe duo kicks off the episode by reminiscing about the golden year of 1985, as they each reveal their top five favorite songs from that era. The conversation is filled with personal anecdotes and insights as they dissect tracks that defined the decade. Their selections span a broad spectrum of styles—from the pop sensibilities of Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and Wham's "Careless Whisper", to the rock edge of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and The Smiths' evocative "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". They also shine a light on the artful, quirky stylings of Talking Heads with "And She Was", while nodding to collaborative anthems like Mick Jagger and David Bowie's "Dancing In The Streets". Other memorable tracks discussed include Cheap Trick's "Tonight It's You", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' rebellious "Don't Come Around Here No More", Robert Palmer's slick "Addicted To Love", and the ever-enduring Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)". Listeners get an intimate glimpse into why these songs resonate so powerfully with the hosts, reflecting both the cultural impact of 1985 and their own personal histories with the music. Check out their YouTube playlist with all these song choices.2. A Cameo Moment of HonorSwitching gears, Tim the Nerd recounts an exciting behind-the-scenes moment that highlights the podcast's growing influence. With creative savvy and a touch of fandom, Tim explains how he secured a heartfelt Cameo from Aubrey Edwards, the renowned referee from All Elite Wrestling. Celebrating the milestone of reaching 400 episodes, Aubrey Edwards shared some kind words about Friends Talking Nerdy. Tim dives into the process—using the Cameo platform—to connect with a wrestling personality who is not only a fan but also a respected figure in the industry. This segment offers a fun peek into the strategic networking and passion that fuels the podcast's community spirit.3. Wrestling, Ethics, and the Netflix Docuseries “Mr. McMahon”The episode then turns its focus to the world of professional wrestling with an in-depth discussion on the Netflix documentary “Mr. McMahon.” Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dissect the film's portrayal of Vince McMahon's tumultuous career and the various controversies that have shadowed his legacy. The hosts debate the ethical dilemmas wrestling fans face as they reconcile their admiration for the spectacle with the problematic aspects of McMahon's history. Their discussion is both analytical and impassioned, weighing the documentary's revelations against the cultural mythos of wrestling. Listeners are invited to reflect on the complexities of fandom—how one can celebrate the art of wrestling while critically engaging with its darker undercurrents. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. In 1985, Phil Collins could do no wrong. His album No Jacket Required would eventually hit the top spot in the US and the UK. He'd also have the top album and top song on both sides of the Atlantic. He won a Grammy for Against All Odds (which would hit #1), his duet with Philip Bailey, Easy Lover, was a smash hit around the world and hit duet with Marilyn Martin, Separate Lives, would also go to #1. And after a world tour to support his 25 million selling album No Jacket Required, he played Live Aid in London with Sting and then jumped the Concorde to make it to the US and played RFK with Eric Clapton and a reunited Led Zeppelin. Plus he was on Miami Vice. The man was unstoppable. As No Jacket Required turns 40, we decided to analyze it track by track. Though Collins proved he could navigate the mid-80s recording styles without getting too cheesy on tracks like Sussudio and Inside Out, there are others that aren't great given the strength of the hits like Only You and I Know and I Don't Wanna Know. The album would sell over 12 million in the US alone thanks to hits like Sussudio and the video for Take Me Home not only gave him clout as a bonafide international star but also kept the album selling well into 1986. Phil has received a lot of backlash in latter days due to the fact that he was everywhere in the 80s - chart topping with every Genesis album, every solo record, every duet or movie soundtrack song, every tour, every TV appearance, every music video. Does he deserve the criticism he gets or did he just make the most of his opportunities he was given? We debate that and more on this surely to be divisive episode. A Groovy Kind of Love“, „Another Day in Paradise“, „I Can't Dance“.

Peters Playlist für Phil Collins: Face Value (1981): In the air tonight, This must be love, Behind the lines, Hand in hand, Missed again, If leaving me is easy Hello, I must be going! The 1985 hit from Phil Collins with the mysterious title. Is it a simple story of youthful infatuation or is it much more metaphorical? Is SUSSUDIO the name of Apple's next virtual assistant or marital aid? Can you get it to spell "SHELL OIL" and other naughtier words upside-down on its LCD display? Is SUSSUDIO a post-hypnosis trigger-word? Black magic? Should it have been (badly) sung as a fairy-tale about a wooden boy? What does Lenny think? How do the side subjects of World War II airforce banter, semaphore and watch-faces, and curiously-named bakeries come into this? David Letterman's investigative probe. The dark shadow of AMERICAN PSYCHO. What sort of baldness did Phil and Bill Bailey experience? Is SUSSUDIO a name or a word anyway? Night-clubs based on sarcasm and murder? How much should a vodka-lime-soda cost? Is a jacket required? What's gone wrong with a youth jazz-band? Air-fryers - are they any good? Would you like to appear (well, vocally) on the show? Do you have a pop song or ear-worm from the SMOOTH FM genre that's infested your mind and needs to be investigated? Visit this page https://speakpipe.com/lyrics to record us your own voicemail hot-take on your specific smooth song of suckiness. You could be on a future episode! Let's talk about the song, "Sussudio" from the album No Jacket Required. What are your thoughts on this tune... most people love it, but I was surprise to learn that no everyone does!
Old Philliam "Tarzan OST" Collins returns to the pod this week to tell us all that jackets are no longer required. Andrew and Dan reminisce about early-2000s VH1 programming, debate whether a Prince-ripoff is still good because it sounds like Prince, and try to decode who the hell Sussudio is.
++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ als Solokünstler: "In The Air Tonight", "The Roof Is Leaking", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Do You Know, Do You Care?", "Sussudio", "Long Long Way To Go", "Take Me Home", "Against All Odds", "That's Just The Way It Is", "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "Another Day In Paradise" mit Genesis als Drummer: "The Musical Box", "Supper's Ready", "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" mit Genesis als Drummer/Sänger: "Dance on a Volcano", "Squonk", "Follow You Follow Me", "Duchess", "Abacab", "Keep It Dark", "Mama", "Home By The Sea", "Tonight Tonight Tonight", "Land of Confusion", "Throwing It All Away", "No Son of Mine"
FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM: @PODONLANSDOWNE We were pleased to welcome friend of the program Ben Porter (Twitter @Ben13Porter) onto the program this week! We just sorta riffed about awesome baseball slang, nicknames, and phrases for an hour. Baseball's got great terminology--we wanted to celebrate that on the show. There may or may not have been a lot of talk about regions south of the belt, you'll have to tune in and find out for yourself. BUT FIRST: The Red Sox are on a roll! We--including our international correspondent Jake--dived into their recent sweeps of the Tigers and Guardians, how the team can keep up their hot streak as they enter a challenging stretch of games to wrap up the first half of the season, and more. We also took a peak at some potential trade ideas that have been thrown around, and who the Red Sox might make a move for come deadline day. Opening song is "Baseball" by Hippo Campus, closing song is "Soul Bossa Nova" by (and I did not know this until today!) Quincy Jones. "Take My Out To The Ballgame" from Ken Burns' documentary series Baseball was also used, along with "Sussudio" by Phil Collins.

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? We sure can! James and Connor are taking on Phil Collins' most successful solo record: No Jacket Required! It's a more upbeat outing than his first two records, with peppy dance pop anthems like Sussudio, I Don't Wanna Know, and Who Said I Would alongside the occasional power ballad like Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore. We'll figure out why this Honorary Texan looks so wet on the album cover, which famous musician fired him from a drumming gig, and why he might have anonymously taken on the role of a chocolate-peddling ape. This actor, Genesis drummer and frontman, and newly-inducted Spin It Legend has plenty of surprises in store, and we won't even require that you wear a jacket. Su-Su-Sussudio! On episode 13 of Past Prime, Steve and Matty return to 1985, when a thirty four year old, mullet-curious drummer, who loved Hawaiian shirts and Motown, ruled the airwaves. We know what you're saying -- this album is not "Past Prime" -- it's the very definition of "prime!" Maybe so. It produced number one hits. It won Grammys. It sold tens of millions of copies. It landed Collins on the mountaintop, alongside more telegenic Pop stars like MJ, Prince, Madonna and Sting. But critics did not abide. In fact, Phil Collins, himself, doesn't even think it's his best work. Moreover, in spite of its popularity, the album has basically been erased from the airwaves. When was the last time you heard "Sussudio," "Take Me Home" or "Don't Lose My Number?" Steve theorizes that Phil's mixture of horns, drums and synth programming literally went beyond Pop -- beyond prime. And, in that way, it went to Past Prime. Matty, is less convinced. While he loves several of the songs and was enamored of Phil's "talented Dad" vibe, he's less enchanted by the relentless "Jazzercise Rock" on the album's deep cuts. After a frisky battle, our co-hosts move on to unite in their assessment of Collins' 1993 one man show, "Both Sides." Whereas "No Jacket" pushed into the stratosphere, beyond Prime, "Both Sides" is the sad, lonely diary entry of a middle-aged man. It features eleven, glacially slow, sad-sack tracks -- most of them over six minutes in length. And while none of those songs are entitled "Can I Smell Your Hair," they all could be. It's Phil's own favorite solo album. It's also perhaps the very definition of Past Prime. Get your white linen pants, your bold, short-sleeved collared shirts and your Casios ready. It goes without saying, however -- jackets are optional for this one. To read more about Phil Collins "No Jacket Required," check out the full essay at Past Prime.
Barry and Abigail discuss So by Peter Gabriel and sample Waimea Red, Pono Life, and POG Hazy IPA from Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii. Barry's first exposure to this album was the music video for Sledgehammer. Abigail's knowledge of Phil Collins and Genesis comes from the Tarzan soundtrack, which Phil Collins wrote. Barry incorrectly remembered that Sussudio by Phil Collins was knocked out of the Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot by Sledgehammer; in fact, it was Invisible Touch by Genesis that Sledgehammer replaced. Mercy Street was dedicated to Anne Sexton and inspired by her poem 45 Mercy Street. Read more about Stanley Milgram's experiments, or listen to a very nuanced debunking of the experiment's cultural narrative by You're Wrong About, one of Abigail's favorite podcasts. Although they had been steadily growing in popularity since their debut in the mid-70's, Dire Straits would become a household name with their fifth studio album, Brothers In Arms. Between the catchy hooks accessible on both rock and adult contemporary radio, and the video-driven appeal of the group on MTV, DIre Strats became an arena group in 1985.This album found Dire Straits composed of John Illsley on bass, Terry Williams on drums, Alan Clark on piano and organ, Guy Fletcher on synthesizer, and of course the primary driver, songwriter, and co-producer for the album was Mark Knopfler. Additionally, Jazz drummer Omar Hakim was brought in to re-record much of the percussion work, though Williams remained the drummer for the band.Knopfler was quite the perfectionist when it came to sound, and this album would be the first to be recorded entirely digitally. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first compact disc to sell a million copies. The success Dire Straits had with this album may have led to the groups undoing. Knopfler was uncomfortable with the fame, thinking that people were coming to the shows for the celebrity rather than the music. The group would take a hiatus following the "Brothers In Arms" tour, and would produce one more studio album before disbanding. Knopfler would go on to produce solo work as well as collaborate with other artists including Eric Clapton , Thomas Dolby, and Bob Dylan. Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. So Far AwayThis is the opening track on the album and the lead single in the UK, released in April of 1985, ahead of the album. It would be the third single in the US where it hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is about carrying on a long-distance relationship.Your Latest TrickA melancholy deep cut, this song features Randy Brecker on trumpet and Michael Brecker on saxophone. It is clearly referencing prostitution, but it has a feel of loneliness and emptiness. Some say it is about a relationship and some say it is about society in general. The night is over, everyone is going home, and the guy is left alone wondering what happened. One WorldAnother deep cut, and more blues-oriented. "Can't get no remedy on my TV, it's nothing but the same old news. Well, they can't find a way to be one world in harmony. Can't get no antidote for blues." Tony Levin was brought in to play bass on this one. Walk of LifeThis hit almost didn't make the album. Co-producer Neil Dorfsman voted against its being included, but the band outvoted him. It made it to number 7 on the US charts, and was one of their biggest commercial hits in the UK, peaking at number 2 there. It is about the street musicians in London playing standards in the subways. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:This is Not America by Pat Metheny and David Bowie (from the motion picture The Falcon and the Snowman)This show about American kids turned Soviet spies was in the theaters in February 1985, and this song was on the charts in May. STAFF PICKS:Obsession by AnimotionWayne kicks off our staff picks with a synth pop hit that was a staple of every dance floor in 1985. Animotion covered this song, originally performed by Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres in 1983. The song was developed at first thinking about the obsession of drugs, but it transformed into an obsession with a person when it was done. Smuggler's Blues by Glenn FreyBrian's staff pick was well known at the time from Miami Vice. "You be cool for 20 hours and I'll pay you 20 grand." One of the things that made Miami Vice such a popular draw was its use not just of cool actors in Miami, but also using cameos from the music world. Glenn Frey appeared as a smuggler in the episode where "Smuggler's Blues" was played.Sussudio by Phil CollinsRob's staff pick is the lead track from Collins' third solo album "No Jacket Required." The drum machine and horns made this a polarizing song, with lots of people loving it and lots hating it. It was a big hit in the summer of 1985, and Phil Collins has mentioned that this song is the one most often sung to him when strangers approach.Marlene on the Wall by Suzanne VegaBruce closes out the staff picks with a song inspired by Marlene Dietrich. Singer songwriter Suzanne Vega heard Dietrich responding to a controversial statement, "You have lead many men to death with your body." with the perfect response, "Give me a kiss." This was the lead track off Vega's debut album, dealing with loneliness and a strained relationship. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Lady In My Life by Stanley JordanJazz guitarist Stanley Jordan covers a deep cut from Michael Jackson's Thriller album to close out this week's podcast.
Today's great album and vinyl up for grabs in link 3 is No Jacket Required from Phil Collins. Released in 1985 it features some of Collins' biggest hits, One More Night, Sussudio, Take Me Home and Don't Lose My Number.
Ever since I first watched Selena Gomez act and sing on Disney Channel as a child, I have never been disappointed by her as an actress or musical artist. On March 12, Gomez released her first fully Spanish-language EP titled “Revelación.” This is not the first time that Mexican American pop singer has embraced her Hispanic heritage through her music. Gomez's fifth solo project comes almost a decade after she first recorded Spanish versions of her hit songs “A Year Without Rain” and “Who Says.” Gomez experiments with a slew of different genres in comparison to her previous albums, with “Revelación” having a series of sultry Latin trap and reggaeton beats. In the first track “De Una Vez” (translated as “At Once” in English), the singer belts out a bittersweet melody describing a sense of healing and empowerment after a breakup, which I have to assume is about her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber that ended in 2012. Gomez had released this song back in January, which led it to becoming the first ever all-Spanish song sung by a female to debut as #1 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart. The second track titled “Buscando Amor” “translated to “Looking for Love” in English) is about letting go and having a good time on your own with little distractions, A.K.A. men. Gomez described “Buscando Amor” on “Revelación Stories” by Spotify as a song that “every girl needs” that celebrates how beautiful women are. From Publisher: The Reveille While you're here… Everything You Need to Know About Selena Gomez's Skincare Routine To wash away the day, Gomez uses a soothing foam face cleanser. “It actually helps because I have dry skin,” she told Vogue . “But in certain areas, I have oily, which is really annoying.” A cleanser like SkinCeuticals Soothing Cleanser Foam has calming ingredients like cucumber extract, glycerin, orchis mascula extract formulated for sensitive skin. To hydrate and plump up the skin, Gomez loves Tatcha's Dewy Skin Cream. “It's so thick and yummy that you don't actually have to use that much of it,” Gomez told Vogue . “I think when I was younger, I didn't really take care of my skin, because I didn't really know why. I was working since I was seven and had makeup on and figuring all that out. So I would say I didn't care until the last few years and I realized how important it was.” To apply, Gomez uses her hands to massage the product in an upwards motion. Gomez never leaves the house without wearing a protective shield of SPF. “I like to put sunscreen on because not only is it important to keep your skin looking fresh but I have lupus, so being in the sun is difficult for me, so I like to put my sunscreen on,” she told Vogue . Her go-to is Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30, which is sheer, lightweight, and fragrance-free. From Publisher: ELLE Review: Selena Gomez ‘Revelación' and Nick Jonas ‘Spaceman' But just like the Phil Collins catalog, Spaceman runs a little too wan and quiet between the hits. These songs all flow together, zooming from track to track as if the radio station were being changed between them, but there are stretches that are more fit for sleep playlists than as a soundtrack to waking activities. There's a fine line between music that's calming and music that is literally sedative; Spaceman delivers a bit too much “Long Long Way to Go” when more “Sussudio” was needed.
The guys mashup and freak out over the similarities between two big hits from two big 80's hitmakers. Plus - that time Phil Collins played on both Live Aid stages, got lampooned on South Park and thought he was at the Battle of the Alamo in another life... This episode brought to you by Away [...]

VPR Radio got the chance to interview the legendary, Grammy-award-winning group The System. Mic Murphy and David Frank stopped by to chop it up with DJ FMI and Qianathegoddess just days before the election. The duo was promoting their new hit single- People Get Up! featuring Sandra St. Victor and hip-hop artist Melle Mel. The timely track encourages Americans of all ages, genders and belief systems to hit the polls. The pair told VPR how they came together in the 1980's when Mic, who was a road manager and David a keyboardist for the band Kleeer met. Later in New York City, David Frank was working on a session that evolved into a track called "It's Passion" which was to feature a pre-stardom Madonna on vocals. However, due to creative differences, Madonna bowed out. Frank then remembered Murphy's soulful vocal ability and invited him work to on it. The results were so impressive that Atlantic Records offered Murphy and Frank a recording deal of their own. Murphy came up with the band's name, and within weeks "It's Passion" was receiving massive radio airplay in New York.Their first two albums featured hits like "Sweat," "I Won't Let Go" and the iconic "You Are In My System", which became a number ten R&B smash. In 1983, Mic and David also wrote and produced Pump the Nation, a one-off album for a project called Attitude. Attitude featured Khris Kellow, who worked on many of the later The System albums and appears as a member of the band in Beat Street video clip for Baptize the Beat. "Promises Can Break", "I Wanna Make You Feel Good" and "I Can't Take Losing You." The System also appeared in the 1984 breakdancing film Beat Street and the soundtrack, performing Baptize The Beat.Their version of the Marc Benno song "Rock N' Roll Me Again" became famous in the 1984 action comedy Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy. The soundtrack album would go on to win a Grammy. They would also reach No. 23 on Billboard's R&B chart with the title track from the 1988 Eddie Murphy film Coming to America. All of this success occurred while they were contributing their talents to projects such as the Scritti Politti album Cupid & Psyche 85, Phil Collins' "Sussudio," Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You," and "This Is My Night," and Mtume's "Juicy Fruit," among many others. The System's greatest success came in 1987 with the release of the single "Don't Disturb This Groove," from the album of the same name and the duo achieved their biggest US Pop hit, "Don't Disturb This Groove". The single reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and No. 3 on the Hot 100. The follow-up single, "Nighttime Lover," was also a top 10 R&B hit, peaking at No. 7.The duo came back together in 2000 and are in the process of crafting more projects together that will be releasing in 2020 and 2021. This week on the pod is another complex and not particularly happy story. There's a red wedding, attempted murder, and a lavish long sleeved coat. (It turns out everyone in the ancient near east was color blind.) The playlist has Genesis (of course), but also Sussudio, Something happened on the way to heaven, Land of Confusion. Non-Genesis parts of the playlist include the Avett Brothers and a Little Bit of Everything. Check out the playlist each week on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/user/vinylpreacher). The Vinyl Preacher is supported by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and LuMin, the Lutheran Campus Ministry Network. It is produced by Nick Morris, aka Draze Force.

Just say the word! You know...Sussudio! Amanda Duarte (Dead Darlings) is with Sharon this time, showing the guest star chair who's boss. The two discuss the ubiquity of weed in Brooklyn, and how those who peak in high school should not expect any better. Multiple kinds of quick deaths are covered as well. Likewise the faux pas of wearing pantyhose as tights. Then they wind things up deciding for whom they should each be a backup singer. (SPOILER: Sharon's headed overnight to Georgia...)
This week, Chris, Adam and Jackie discuss marketing automation challenges, a campaign advertising controversy, pink spoon marketing and new IOS features.
Hello dear listeners, and welcome to a torture (TORCHA!!!) filled episode of Just One of the Guys. And as you can tell by the cover to the book this week, we're witness to Lord Darkseid's (and his faithful companion Cylde's) creepy grand inquisitor, Desaad! He's gotten ahold of Green Lantern and is implimenting all sorts of torture (TORCHA!!!) on our emerald hero. And from the title of the crossover, it looks like the torture (TORCHA!!!) has something to do with the Phil Collins band that Peter Gabriel left to make videos about shocking monkeys. I could be wrong about that. And in the second book, Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #4, we get the first Green Lantern story written by then current Green Lantern writer Ron Marz. Plus there's some nice art of a ridiculously hot girl in some outlandish lingere, an Alan Scott story drawn by Jim "I Like Boobs" Balent where Green Lantern tussels with Solomon Grundy, an G'nort story where he goes to an Obedience School reunion, and a story about a school marm who refuses being a Green Lantern. Yeah, they all can't be winners. So unless you want Desaad to play "Sussudio" over and over again (Wait, that's not Genesis either...), I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and start listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks!
