In this episode of New Books in Southeast Asian Studies we travel with Craig J. Reynolds to the mid-south of Thailand in the first half of the twentieth century, where we meet with a legendary policeman who trained in martial arts and the occult so as to protect himself in mortal combat with dangerous foes. That policeman was Butr Pantharak, also known as Khun Phan. Though he already has quite a number of biographers in Thai, Reynolds' Power, Protection and Magic in Thailand: The Cosmos of a Southern Policeman (ANU Press 2019) is the first book to tell the story of Khun Phan's life and times for English-language readers. It is available for free download from the ANU Press website, where it is accompanied by a series of beautiful videos that build on the contents of each of its chapters, the making of which we discuss in this episode. Thai-language readers might also be interested in Craig Reynold's new collection of essays, จดหมายจากสุดขอบโลก คิดคำนึงถึงอดีตในปัจจุบัน (Letters from the Edge of the World: Thinking of the Past in the Present, Sayam Press, 2022), which we talk about at the end of the interview. Big day at the Olympics for Canada and we talk about all of that on this episode. The Pat Down looks at the lack of faith the betting outlets have for the BC Lions this season. Former Canadian gold medal sprinter Robert Esmie follows and explains how Andre De Grasse was able to break through and win gold in the 200 metres. Craig Button follows Hashtags - the best and worst of Twitter and tells us why Canada is not at the Ivan Hlinka/Gretzky tournament this summer, why he thinks that Marc Andre-Fleury will be a major loss for the Vegas Golden Knights, who he thinks will be the surprise team in the Pacific division, and gives his insight on the Evander Kane allegations. Price is Right looks at the Summer Olympics and how there are far too many sports in the games, suggesting that some of the sports with pro athletes need to get cut. Farhan Lalji joins to tell us about what we can expect from the BC Lions this season, what the health of Michael Reilly is going into week one, and why he thinks the Seattle Seahawks will take some time to get used to a new offence. Blake looks to sizzle on Hot Take. The show wraps with all the Errors & Omissions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Back in the blanket fort on free agent frenzy day and we got so much to get to! The Welcome Matt looks at the Tucker Poolman four year contract with the Canucks and why it has the same smell as Jim Benning free agency mistakes of the past. NHL insider David Pagnotta from the Fourth Period tells us that he was blown away by how much money and term was handed out during the opening of free agency in the NHL, why Vegas Golden Knights players are still baffled by the Marc Andre Fleury trade, on how he's heard there was discussion from teams on offer sheeting Elias Pettersson, gives his thoughts on the Canucks moves, and who he sees as the best players still available on the free agent market. Craig Button follows Hashtags - the best and worst of Twitter, and tells us that he doesn't understand the Canucks signing of so many depth defencemen to term and money, and unpacks some of the bigger deals that were signed today. The Price is Right looks at the Canucks lack of depth and how it continues to be an issue for the team. Jeff Paterson joins for his daily hit and says that he's still got lots of questions on the Canucks backend, explains how having hope that a player will have a bounce back season is becoming a seasonal occurrence for the Canucks, why he thinks 2021 2nd round pick Danila Klimovich was locked up so quickly, and what he remembers the most about Alex Edler's time in Vancouver. Blake looks to sizzle on Hot Take. The show wraps up with all the Errors & Omissions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It is expansion draft day with little to no surprises. The Welcome Matt looks at how the news of the day was leaked, as hours before what was supposed to be the big reveal the Kraken's expansion list was leaked by the likes of Frank Seravalli and others. Kevin Woodley from In-Goal Magazine follows and tells us how he thought that Carey Price was going to get picked by the Kraken, explains why he thinks it was a bad move that the Kraken didn't select Price, wonders if there is something behind the Kraken not taking Kaapo Kähkönen from the Wild, why he doesn't think there is a big market for Braden Holtby, and tells us why he thinks that Mikey DiPietro being in Abbotsford will help the Canucks with its backup goalie hole. Jeff Paterson joins at an earlier time and gives his thoughts on the leaked list of players that came out of Seattle, why he thinks the Kraken's goaltending picks are underwhelming, the importance of the Canucks keeping the 9th overall pick at the draft, and why Jim Benning can't sit back and wait while now 31 teams compete to make their rosters better. The Price is Right looks at expansion in the big four leagues, suggesting that they're tapped out for new franchises. Craig Button joins next and tells us how he likes the Kraken's signings of Adam Larsson and Jamie Oleksiak are great moves, why he thinks that taking Mark Giordano is an asset accumulation move for the Kraken, why he isn't surprised that Price wasn't taken by Seattle, and gives his insight on who he thinks will be available for the Canucks at the draft with the 9th overall pick and in the second round. Blake looks to sizzle on Hot Take. We cap off the shows with all the Errors & Omissions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
After three weeks in hospital Matt is back! The Welcome Matt explains why he was held up in hospital for so long. ESPN radio NBA play-by-play announcer Marc Kestecher follows and breaks down the NBA Finals through the first three games. Craig Button follows Hashtags - the best and worst of Twitter and tells us about his latest Craig's List, details why Russian prospect Fedor Svechkov has climbed up the rankings and why Port Moody native Kent Johnson has fallen down, plus gives his take on the Minnesota Wild buying out Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. The Price is Right focuses on teams that had logos that were politically incorrect and how much received it has been within society, wondering what's holding back those teams that continue to use offensive nicknames. Sports business insider Tom Mayenknecht follows Tell Me I'm Wrong and tells us why he thinks there is synergy using the same Canucks nickname for its new AHL team in Abbotsford, and whether he thinks the Vancouver Giants would be upset that the Abbotsford team used the Johnny Canucks logo. Jeff Paterson joins back in his usual spot and explains why he thought the roll out of the new AHL teams nickname and colours was a clunky job by the Canucks, why he doesn't think trading the 9th overall pick is a good idea for the Canucks, and what Trent Cull's impact will be with the new team in Abbotsford. Blake's looks to sizzle on Hot Take. The show concludes with all the Errors & Omissions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is the now famous podcast that we did with Craig J. Blankenship of CB Asphalt Paving. This is the first time that Mr. Blankenship reveals publicly on our "THE 5:15 SHOW" that he is putting his hat in the ring to buy the Milan Dragway and his thoughts of what the track needs (starts @15:17 into the show). We also talked about all things asphalt too...

Party Favorz finally made it through the Ralphi Rosario Legacy series, which I overestimated its depth and ended up expanding to three volumes. Even then, there were a lot of great tracks I was loathe to leave on the cutting room floor but when compiling these tribute sets to legends that have been in the business as long as Ralphi has — you have to edit. Volume 2 picks up where we left off with some of his greatest work from over the years including last year's massive "RITMO" by Black Eyed Peas & J Balvin. The hits are included and the one y'all are really looking for will make an appearance on volume 3 (you know what I'm talking about). The goal here is to not only showcase the hits but a lot of the underground and lesser known tracks that were popular in the underground peak hour scene. Nevermind that he and Rosabel have done extensive work with Latin artists providing musical touch that only they could master (next to Pablo Flores, Tony Moran and to some extent Hex Hector and Junior Vasquez) so I did touch on some of those tracks throughout these sets. Overall, there's a great deal of diversity spread throughout these three sets. For those only familiar with the more commercial side of Ralphi Rosario — you're in for a pleasant surprise. I'll be back on Saturday with the final volume. Until then...ENJOY! I want to give a HUGE shoutout to Nicholas C. $20, Glenn A. $10, Ludovic D. $20, Casper Y. $50, Joe S. $50 and Anthony S. $100 for their generous donations in helping us renew our web hosting services. We still need about 1/2 more to meet our goal in the next 15 days so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Ralphi Rosario is an American house musician an founding member of the influential Chicago DJ group Hot Mix 5. The group was formed in 1981 while Ralphi was still in high school at the time the group became one of the major early forces of the burgeoning House Music scene in Chicago. By 1987, he collaborated with Xaviera Gold for "You Used To Hold Me," which has gone on to be one of the most influential early House Music tracks of all-time for what later was a revolution on the dancefloor. While Ralphi continued to put out early House Music releases throughout the nineties — his style rapidly changed when he teamed with Miami's DJ Abel (Aguilera) to form Rosabel a hybrid version of his last name and Abel's first name for a new more tribal house sound that he continued to perfect through today. Later the duo would introduce more Latin influences in their work while producing muscular House Music tracks for major artists that showcased their heritage and alternate musical influences. As a duo they have racked up five #1 Billboard Dance Club hits and Rosario has racked up fourteen Top Ten Dance Club Hits and two #1 hits. This does not include the hundreds of #1 hits for remixes of other artists including, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, Cher, Crystal Waters, Cyndi Lauper, Donna Summer, Erika Jayne, Gloria Estefan, Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Kristine W, Kylie, Mariah Carey, ONO, Rihanna, Jennifer Holliday, Pussycat Dolls, Selena Gomez, Stevie Nicks, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and countless others. The list is exhausting but 90% or more are all included in the Party Favorz Diva Hall of Fame. With over 60 hours of tracks (which doesn't even come close to his breathtaking catalog) to choose from — I had numerous ways to approach these two sets honoring the master. I finally settled on hitting on the gayest tracks with the biggest divas and spread it out between the nineties and millennium with some rare tracks and some underground sounds that were predominantly only heard in queer clubs. Once I put out the volume 2 — all told there will be approximately 8+ hours of classics for your enjoyment. These sets are note intended to showcase his entire career but they are a good start. It took me awhile to wrap my head around this but I believe I've done a damn good job at representing some of his finest work whether solo or collaborative. It is my distinguished honor to induct one of the most prolific and influential House Music DJ/Producers of the last 40 years, Ralphi Rosario into the Party Favorz Legacy series. Here is the first episode of the Workin’ 218 podcast! It is just an introduction to get rid of some of the fears, and run a practice session through the equipment. This episode is nothing more than a brief history of my work life. There will be many more stories, and examples of lessons I have learned as they are relevant in the conversations you hear moving forward. Please bear with me as each episode will get better and better. This seems like just one way that I can hopefully reach out and help others while helping myself learn a few things. Together we ALL can be successful, so lets do it! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/workin218/support
This broadcast is doing double duty as both a new Red Shirts episode and a weekly review of the latest episode of Star Trek Discovery! Why? Cuz our mild-mannered Craig J., who is usually very diplomatic about Discovery, went straight gangsta over this episode! He wasn't too happy, so despite the fact that I typically review these episodes solo and on camera (we didn't have time to set up a video podcast), we had to convene a special session of the Federation council and hash it all out! We also express a bit of fear about the upcoming Picard series. For better or worse, here's our review!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Bonus points if anyone knows the corresponding stardate for 2019. No excuses for tardiness this time, people. This Star Trek Short Trek was released in early December but the holidays fell upon us, the eggnog doth flow, mistakes were made...plus, I've been confined to quarters as a result of my reaction to this latest Short Trek. Yes, Craig J. is in the center seat this episode, as I break down why this latest DSC endeavor eschews the basic tenets of Starfleet and the Federation! Then, we discuss and debate one of many online articles that lists Next Generation characters that should appear on the new Picard series. Finally, we briefly discuss the arrival of Discovery on Blu-ray! Sorry for the delay, folks, but the Christmas season crept up on us, as a matter of fact, we're down one crew member on this away mission (Craig J. most likely abandoned ship to finish his shopping), but Big Sexy and your captain Qstorm, are up for the challenge. We break down the latest trailer for the upcoming season of Discovery, but first, we discuss an...ample topic...regarding a photo of the lovely Deanna Troi herself, Ms. Marina Sirtis with co-star Patrick Stewart. Q wants to know if it's live or Memorex (Big Sexy speaks on another Pinterest photo of Troi which has been making the rounds for years, which you'll have to google for yourself, I run a clean ship here)! Then we do a real time review of the trailer and give our opinions on Tilly's black goo, Pike in command, the Red Angel, what seems to be the changing perspective from Burnham as the lead to a more ensemble season, and then we address the Targ in the room..unshaven Spock! And look for another bonus episode next week when we review the most recent Star Trek Short Trek The Brightest Star! The crew of the U.S.S. Internet is finally reunited for some high level discourse on Star Trek Discovery! A new trailer for Season 2 and the first of four 15 minute shorts are the focus of our discussion on this mission. Q provided a solo review which you can see here on YouTube: https://goo.gl/SSAKDP but now Craig J. is on deck to give his report! Then Big Sexy joins in as we review the new trailer that dropped from Comic-con this past weekend. All three of us scan this thing with our tricorders, break it down to its subatomic particles and give our takes on what looks to be another action-packed season. We still have until January 19th before Season 2 begins, but the Red Shirts are reporting for duty right now! It's Captain Q and Big Sexy minus Craig J. as we undergo our latest mission into the Delphic Expanse (yes, I'm currently watching Enterprise on Netflix). We had to launch at the last minute due to the breaking news we just received: PATRICK STEWART IS RETURNING TO STAR TREK! Break out the vintage Chateau Picard, this is cause for celebration...or is it cause for concern? On this episode, we discuss Stewart's return, what stories could possibly be told regarding a 78 year-old Starfleet officer and best of all: what guest stars would we hope Sir Patrick will convince to apear?! We also address some potential nonsense regarding a rumor of the Borg queen's appearance on Discovery! So beam on up to the U.S.S. Dr. Bryan received his PsyD in clinical psychology Baylor University, and completed his clinical psychology residency at the Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He served four years in the Air Force on active duty as the Chief of Primary Care Psychology Services and Suicide Prevention Program Manager at Lackland AFB, and deployed to Iraq in 2009 as the Clinical Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic located at Joint Base Balad (LSA Anaconda), Iraq. Dr. Bryan currently researchers suicide, psychological health, and resiliency among military personnel and veterans, and oversees two randomized controlled trials totaling approximately $3M testing interventions for suicidal military personnel at Fort Carson, Colorado. He also serves as the lead risk management consultant for the $25 million STRONG STAR Research Consortium investigating treatments for combat-related PTSD among military personnel. He regularly provides training to clinicians and medical professionals about managing suicidal patients, and has over 120 publications and scientific presentations in the areas of suicide and military mental health, including the book Managing Suicide Risk in Primary Care. In this episode Dr. Bryan and I discuss the issue of veteran suicides. Dr. Bryan helps answer the following questions asked by my fellow veterans: How accurate is the statistic that 22 veterans commit suicide everyday? What are the commonalities of veteran suicides? How should we, as survivors, react to suicide? What solutions are proving the most effective at combating the veteran suicide rate? Do mental health first aid techniques work? Has there been a change in the veteran suicide rate related to the publicity of this issue? Are suicides more related to transitioning out of the military and finding purpose than PTSD and bad memories/dreams? Are there direct or indirect connections between medications prescribed to veterans and suicide risk?

Your humble host has been under the weather for the past several weeks and is way behind in my posts, all of which have been finished for some time now and begging to be unleashed. I'm trying to take advantage of the best I've felt in a long while so here goes… In a nutshell, Celine is to a second-generation what Barbra Streisand was to the previous. She has an amazing voice that has raw power when it's required and subtle elegance when not. Canadian born, she started as a French singer and by the early 90s moved into English adult contemporary pop. From there, she went on to international fame and is a worldwide tour de force in and of herself. Sorry, I cannot heap more accolades on this gifted singer, but we all know who she is, where she's been and all the hits. So with that, I'll let her fame speak for itself. Party Favorz welcomes Celine's induction into the Diva Hall of Fame with this series of dance floor hits and gay anthems. As always… ENJOY! Album : Celine Dion Genre : Club, House Year : 2014 Total Time : 1:19:10.00 1. To Love You More (Tony Moran's I'll Be... Waiting Vocal Mix) 2. My Heart Will Go On (Tony Moran Anthem Mix) 3. Loved Me Back To Life (DJ Laszlo Club Remix) 10. I Want You to Need Me (Thunderpuss Club Mix) 11. I Drove All Night (Hex Hector Extended Vocal Import Mix) 12. After an uneventful night here in Fulton County, the rain has subsided. Happily, there are no tornados to report but we did get a lot of lightning and thunder. Several areas reported high winds and hail, but we were spared mother natures wrath. Seems to me when I posted last year's Spring Edition, we had similar circumstances. Though at that time there was a tornado downtown and you could see it on TV. The warning sirens went off to take cover, but Rick and I just sat there and watched it all unfold on the tube. Of course, it was a couple of miles away, so we didn't have cause for concern despite the loud sirens. Thankfully nothing happened this go around so I can bring you the second installment. This set is jam-packed with some smoking hot tunes. I've got to say that Yoko Ono has become quite the club diva. It seems that ever since the classic "Walking On Thin Ice" was fabulously remixed by Danny Tenaglia (among several others) we have been treated to a new mix at least once a year. I don't know what it is about her since she never sold records amounting to anything and let's face it, she can't sing. Nevertheless, the minute a DJ gets a hold on one of her songs, they somehow manage to work miracles. The Craig C (not to be confused with Craig J which I often do) mix is smoldering. We also get a follow-up to last years re-work of "Hot Shot" by Karen Young titled "Rendezvous With Me". As many of you know, Karen had a number one disco hit in 1978 with the latter and the story behind this song was that it was supposed to be the follow-up, but was never released. Instead, they released a track called "Bring On the Boys" which no doubt may end up being re-worked as well. In the meantime, MaxRoxx ripped this puppy apart with the original vocals intact. Just listen and you'll be blown away by how magnificent of a singer Karen really was. Equally exciting is Razor 'n' Guido's return to the scene. I was all excited last year when the unauthorized remix of Britney's "Break the Ice" surfaced by the duo. It didn't just signal a return, but a return to true form. These guys know how to rock it out and "Get Up Stand Up" proves it. I expect more great things from them this year. Finally, I've got the Tony Moran remix of Utada's "Come Back To Me". You might remember the equally hot Seamus Haji mix I used in my last BPM edition. To me, this reminds me a great deal of what Tony did with Rihanna's "Unfaithful" a few years back. Re-working a ballad for the floor can be daunting, but doesn't have to be, and this song proves it. In fact, I'd say it works in spades. Right now, I just need to get out and move around. The sun broke through temporarily this morning, but we're now back in clouds with somewhat cooler temps. I hope everyone's having fun this holiday weekend. I'll be back tomorrow with the final take on spring. Until then.enjoy! First, I need to let everyone know that I changed out volume one of this mix. I was working on the final track list for the last two volumes and realized that Anny's ‘White Lipstick Girl' was on the first set when it wasn't supposed to be. I had previously caught it when I was previewing the mix and wondered why the transition clashed. When I went back and looked at it, I realized it was in a totally different key and I had swapped it out for the Craig J version, which I didn't plan on using. Anywho, I've since removed it from the mix and everything flowed much better. It will show up where it belongs on the last mix. Sorry for the confusion. Moving on, we start things off with the mammoth trance anthem by Perpetuous Dreamer ‘The Sound of Goodbye'. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a huge trance fan, but there was no escaping this undeniably catchy big room tune. For the most part, this mix is pretty dark but delicious at the same time. Some of the biggest anthems of the year are included here. Songs like ‘At the End' Iio's follow-up to massive ‘Rapture', Suzanne Palmer's ‘Show Me', Deborah Cox's ‘Mr. Lonely' and Kristine W's ‘Some Lovin' were all massive club hits in 2002. Equally, ‘Body' (Reach Out)' by Faith Trent was huge and signaled the beginning of a successful run on mixes by Wide Life. Then, of course, we have the radio flop of ‘Alive' by Jennifer Lopez, where Thunderpuss did an amazing job of retrofitting the song for the floor, turning it into a stunning house number. And who could forget the unlikely Thunderpuss re-work of the very young and talented Charlotte Church's rendition of the ‘Tonight' from ‘West Side Story'. Pound for pound and note for note, these songs still stack up. Having the opportunity to go through all these songs from 2002 really brings back some great memories. I've got to say there is something for everyone spread out over all six mixes and I look forward to bringing the rest of them to you throughout the week. Needless to say, I'll be back tomorrow with volume three. Until then…enjoy! Album : Year-End Edition 2002 | volume 2 Genre : Circuit, House, Progressive Year : 2002 Total Time : 1:19:56:00 1.
