EPSIODE #426-- We celebrate the dusty dregs of the summer with the epochal revisionist western THE WILD BUNCH (1969). Directed by Sam Peckinpah and staring literally every "that guy!" from the 1950's and 60's, it's a psychotic shooting spree sent straight from hell. It's great. Listen to it. Go watch it. Maybe not in that order. We also talk about Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR (2000) and, well, the Olympics (RIP). Kind of a slow week unless you just want to hear me talk about Jack Elam or whatever. Boy, oh boy - did The Girl in Lovers Lane set us to dreaming about a place we've never seen.Host segments: spring break antics; everyone check on everyone else; Go-bos; dealing with street toughs; a brief history of Jack Elam; f**k politeness; Danny and the City; I can't live in Dannysburg, but I'd love to visit.
Upon the discovery of their existence, It Happened One Year had no choice but to reconvene before the holiday and discuss the brain-melting lunacy of 1984's top TV holiday specials - Mr. T & Emmanuel Lewis in A Christmas Dream and Scrooge's Rock 'N' Roll Christmas starring Jack Elam. Sarah & Joe's wildly different opinions about this yuletide fare serve as a backdrop to an episode clearly recorded on the fly, whenever a spare moment could be grabbed, to some unconventional IHOY effect.
Christopher and Benjamin return to the well of westerns with their review of Rawhide directed by Henry Hathaway, who most fans of the genre will know as the director of True Grit (1969) among other notable collaborations with John Wayne. Hathaway also dabbled in film noir in the 1940s, so it's no surprise this B&W western was influenced by that directorial style. Rawhide includes maybe the best role of regular western heavy Jack Elam, and a stunning performance from tough and beautiful gal Susan Hayward... Tune in to hear about this lesser known classic western! You can find Rawhide on YouTube, for free, HERE. Furthermore, happy birthday to Chris! This week we watched "The Long Distance Call” and “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?” “Long Distance Call” You can explore the vast reaches of The Twilight Zone and not find an episode as profoundly messed up as this one. On her deathbed, a five-year-old boy's grandmother bemoans how lonely she will be “far away,” and wishes aloud that her beloved Billy could go with her. Worst. Grandma. Ever. “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?” Take mysterious footprints leading away from a pond where an unidentified flying object has crashed, a snowbound diner, and six (or was that seven?) stranded bus passengers, and you've got yourself a “regular Ray Bradbury.” Which one of them is the monster from outer space? DINGALINGALING #4! "We're racers, not rapists."
This week we present an audio commentary we recorded the night before Kriss got hitched, so minus 30 minutes of stuffing our face with kebab, you're hearing his stag do/bachelor party...and technically, the real episode 100. So, sit back, sync up your copy of 'Cannonball Run' and watch along with us as we waffle on about Farrah Fawcett's HD nipples, Burt Reynolds' tash and Jack Elam's magnificent eyebrows.
Each week, comedian Gilbert Gottfried and comedy writer Frank Santopadre share their appreciation of lesser-known films, underrated TV shows and hopelessly obscure character actors -- discussing, dissecting and (occasionally) defending their handpicked guilty pleasures and buried treasures. This week: Lon Chaney grows a mustache! Jack Elam gets "Struck by Lightning"! And the youngest man to win Best Actor! Let Selfie Station be the Picture taker, Ice breaker AND your money maker.
