In S5 E14 I am delighted to welcome Pedja Stojicic, MD, MPH to the podcast. Dr  Stojicic is an instructor for the DrPH Program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health teaching two courses - Enabling Teams and Enabling Large System Change. Pedja is passionate about enabling health leaders to use community organizing practices to advocate for equitable health and well-being. He currently serves as an executive lead for People, Power, Health https://www.peoplepowerhealth.org/ .        In the past, he has worked with the CMS, Center for Public Health Leadership, Primary Care Progress, Way to Wellville, Healthcare Anchor Network, Center for Health Progress, and many others. Previously, Dr. Stojicic has served as president and executive director of Youth of JAZAS, a Serbian NGO fighting HIV/AIDS, and as a consultant for the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia implementing health care financing reform. Dr. Stojicic completed a fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School studying Leadership and Organizing with Prof. Marshall Ganz and later worked as a member of Ganz's HKS Teaching Team. As a life-long activist, he currently serves on the advisory board of Leading Change Network, one of the largest global networks of social movement leaders.     In this incredible conversation Pedja tells us his own story of self before elaborating on the concept of narrative leadership and the practice and pedagogy  of community organising to enable positive social, environmental and political change. We discuss the story arc of Self, Us and Now ( articulated by Professor Marshall Ganz in his book People. Power, Change)  and why finding voice as clinicians and articulating our own story is a key first step to bringing others with us, building collective agency and taking action.      I learn more about work at People, Power, Health and HEART, an advocacy training program for courageous clinicians.      In challenging and uncertain times it is hard not to be inspired and energised by Dr Stojicic who aptly describes himself as  intellectual pessimist but action optimist. This conversation is an empowering call to individual and collective action. "Empowerment of individuals and communities is absolutely central. Getting the community involved in organising their own destiny has to be a key part of it" Professor Sir Michael MarmotLinks / References / Further Reading:Dr Pedja Stojicichttps://www.linkedin.com/in/pedjastojicic/People, Power, Health https://www.peoplepowerhealth.org/HEART program - advocacy training for courageous clinicianshttps://www.peoplepowerhealth.org/heartPeople, Power, Change Professor Marshall Ganz https://www.hks.harvard.edu/publications/people-power-change-organizing-democratic-renewal  The Mind Full Medic Podcast is proudly sponsored by the MBA NSW-ACT Find out more about their service or donate today at www.mbansw.org.auDisclaimer: The content in this podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. There's a good chance if you listen to this show, you struggle with some degree of perfectionism or perfectionistic thinking. You're really type A; if things aren't done perfectly, they feel like they don't matter; you hyperfocus on/obsess over things like your weight and your fat loss progress, you use phrases like "getting back on track" and "I fell off the wagon;" you've spent some amount of time being really strict with your health and fitness, whether that's through macros, “clean” eating, rigid diets like carnivore or keto or doing things like 75 hard… and after a period of time, that completely blows up in your face, you get burnt out, and you quit doing anything; and lots more. This episode is for you if you want to get better at identifying those traits, understand how they can be problematic, and develop solid strategies on how to shift towards more productive mindsets and habits. On today's episode of Empowered in Health, we talk more about tools beyond the scale. Things that can help tremendously when it comes to assessing overall progress on our wellness journeys. And resources that can truly EMPOWER us to press forward with knowledge that encourages us from the inside out. So much of the women's health narrative has included the scale and weight loss and the idea of focusing most on less, skinnier, smaller. But when it comes to long-term, longevity health - shifting our mindset is imperative. The truth is, BMI and Weight on the scale give an inaccurate picture of what's really happening on a deeper level inside our bodies. What about water? What about muscle mass vs. fat mass? What about visceral fat and getting a clearer picture around the kind of "shape" our bodies are in metabolically? The best way to get a snapshot into our wellness on a deeper level is through tools like the WH Ratio, InBody Scan, DexaScan, Measurements, Photos and assessing ENERGY. You can dive into more research below... Learn more about WH Ratio Here. Learn more about InBody Here. Learn more about DexaScan Here. In the end - I'm all about EMPOWERED knowledge for women. When it comes to our health, stepping into more specific data for our unique bodies completely changes the game on how we can work towards our health goals. With more information, we can intentionally focus on the habits that will serve us best. From nutrition to supplementation to changing up fitness strategies, protecting rest/sleep and working on stress management - there's so much that goes into how our body feels and functions. Evan breaks down the main reasons why health progress is really slow to show up, especially if you're only focused on the scale. If you've been living for years in a manner that isn't conducive to your health, then why should you expect results in a couple of weeks. The body takes time to change at a cellular level, and healthy lifestyle habits can take a long time to ingrain into your daily practice. References to mental illness can be found throughout history. The evolution of mental illness, however, has not been linear or progressive but rather cyclical. Whether a behavior is considered normal or abnormal depends on the context surrounding the behavior and thus changes as a function of a particular time and culture. In the past, uncommon behavior or behavior that deviated from the sociocultural norms and expectations of a specific culture and period has been used as a way to silence or control certain individuals or groups. As a result, a less cultural relativist view of abnormal behavior has focused instead on whether behavior poses a threat to oneself or others or causes so much pain and suffering that it interferes with one's work responsibilities or with one's relationships with family and friends. Thankfully there has been great progress throughout the ages which can help us all, Live an Inspired Life! #Psychology #mentalhealth   #Mindset Find out more about Flourish at the links below: ➡️ https://www.Flourish.Mom ➡️ Facebook https://www.Facebook.Com/Flourish.Mom ➡️ Twitter: https://www.Twitter.Com/FlourishMom ➡️ Instagram: https://www.Instagram.com/FlourishMom ➡️ Pinterest: https://www.Pinterest.ca/WowFlourishMom ➡️ Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/DPfvoOISHvw     PSYC 100: Principles of Psychology F21 by PSYC100 is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, except where otherwise noted. How will we cover all Coloradans in 2022? Part 2

House Bill 22-1289: Cover All Coloradans is a monumental bill that will provide comprehensive public health insurance coverage to children, pregnant and postpartum undocumented Coloradans.  However, there is much more to this bill than what meets the eye. Behind this critical piece of legislation have been hours of dedicated engagement from a steering committee consisting of 11 directly impacted community members. Their experiences, stories, and insight have helped shape this bill and provide the perspective essential to ensuring it remains effective and equitable. By uplifting and centering community voice in policy work, we can more holistically embed human-centered legislation in systems that for far too long have intentionally shut out so many communities in our state.  Welcome back to season 4 of The West Steps! On today's episode, we have a full house discussing the Cover All Coloradans bill. We are joined by Erin miller, Vice President for Health Initiatives at the Colorado Children's Campaign; Rayna Hetlage, Senior Policy Manager at Center for Health Progress; Raquel Lane- Arellano, Policy Manager at Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition; and Dr. Lilia Cervantes, Associate Professor at CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Our discussion highlights the progress HB22-1289 has made throughout the legislative session, including the amendments that have been added to make it an even better bill. We also hear about the community-informed process behind this legislation, and how we can work to ensure such processes are more embedded in our policy advocacy work. How Colorado's racist laws targeting immigrants are harming everyone

The West Steps

Play Episode Play 30 sec Highlight Listen Later Apr 9, 2021 24:50

Harmful, racist policies not only intentionally target members of our community, they also bleed into the workings of our everyday culture, creating invisible barriers that prevent people from living their fullest lives. In 2006, Colorado passed three laws that established greater barriers for immigrants and consequently fueled anti-immigrant sentiment in our state and nation. The passage of SB 1023, 90, and HB 1009 instituted a failed patchwork of state and local policies that continue to threaten kids and families every day. The 2006 laws go beyond existing federal law and ultimately harm all members of our communities by driving down wages, impeding individuals' rights to make an adequate living and threatening public health by barring individuals from utilizing basic benefits. Barriers to public services and quality child care lead to poor health outcomes, increased learning gaps, and lower wages over a child's lifetime.  Episode 9 of The West Steps provides more background on these bills and the way they continue to impact our state. We are joined by Maggie Gómez, Deputy Director at the Center for Health Progress, and Lorena Garcia, Executive Director of the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition. Maggie and Lorena describe the impacts of these bills, as well as current efforts taking place to implement policy that provides undocumented individuals with the support they need. This legislative session, policymakers have the opportunity to expand access to economic opportunity and give local communities the authority to support our immigrant and undocumented neighbors through the passage of SB 199. While one bill won't solve everything, it is one step toward creating more inclusive, equitable communities where all kids and families have the chance to thrive.  To read more about SB 199 bill and its journey through the legislature, click here. Support the show (https://www.coloradokids.org/)
