What if understanding your body was just… normal? In this episode of Wellness Wednesday, Helen sits down with Laurisa, founder of Girls Who Know, and Amy, one of their educators, to talk about how they're creating a new narrative for girls' health. Instead of waiting until problems show up, Girls Who Know is equipping young girls early with clear, age-appropriate education about their cycles, hormones, and overall health. The goal isn't just information, but culture change. A generation of girls who grow up understanding their bodies, speaking about them confidently, and seeing body literacy as the standard. Laurisa and Amy share why so many women feel disconnected from their bodies later in life and how early, honest education can change that trajectory entirely. If you've ever thought, “Why didn't I learn this sooner?” this episode shows what it looks like to make sure the next generation does. However, is the lifestyle approach of cycle syncing oversimplifying complex physiological systems, and leading the menstrual and ovulatory dysregulation? In this episode, I explore a new science-backed theory of cycle syncing. Let's look at what's actually happening hormonally and neurologically during this phase, and why this differs widely from person to person.Rather than idealising pre-ovulation as a “green light” phase, this conversation invites a more attentive approach - one that recognises complex biological systems. If you've ever felt pressured to maximise or optimise your life in the first half of your cycle, this episode is for you, and suggests a different approach, grounded in physiology and evidence.I hope you enjoy the episode. In this episode, Sally sits down with Dr. Lara Briden, naturopathic doctor and bestselling author of Period Repair Manual, Hormone Repair Manual, and Metabolism Repair for Women. She's been called the period revolutionary—and after this conversation, you'll understand exactly why.We talk about the massive paradox in women's health:Society suddenly worships estrogen and progesterone when women hit their mid-40s……yet spent the last 60 years casually switching those same hormones off in teenage girls.Yep. We're going there. What We Get IntoWhy regular ovulation is not just “nice to have” — it's literally how young women make hormonesHow we got stuck in a 60-year loop of shutting down women's ovarian function (hint: the pill's “regulate your period” pitch started as a cover story)The weird disconnect between medical guidelines that say periods are a vital sign… and the normalization of medicating them awayWhat a healthy period actually looks like (spoiler: it shouldn't hurt and it shouldn't require you to white-knuckle your way through PMS)Why so many modern symptoms aren't “women being women”—they're the result of environment, lifestyle, and a system that never prioritized female physiologyAnd the big one: Did menopause evolve? Or is it some biological glitch because women are living longer? The Mic-Drop MomentsLara breaks down why menopause absolutely evolved on purpose—and why humans are more like killer whales than we thinkThe “grandmother effect” and why older women have always been essential for the survival of the tribeThe wild fact that among the Hadza, and other traditional-living communities, menopause brings zero symptomsThe reality that our cycles are meant to be signals, not punishmentsIf You've Ever Thought…“I guess this is just how my period is.”“This is normal for my age.”“Maybe my hormones just hate me.”…this episode might flip your worldview upside down (in a good way).About Dr. Lara BridenLara practices in Christchurch, New Zealand, helping women navigate PCOS, PMS, endometriosis, perimenopause, and other hormone-health challenges. Her work bridges biology, history, anthropology, and real-world clinical wisdom.

"I believe women cannot protect what they do not know. If we are illiterate about our own bodies, if we don't understand how they're designed to work in a state of health, we are deprived of our right to true informed consent in healthcare decisions. And this is never more critical than in decisions about reproductive health, including birth control." This is particularly true with young women with intellectual disabilities. Katie Vidmar who is not only an expert in menstrual cycle literacy, but also has a daughter who has Intellectual disabilities will walk us through how we can help a young woman understand the gift and goodness of her body. All humans deserve to be honored in the goodness of there own bodies, to be given the same respect and value as any person, despite their intellectual challenges. Katie will show how we can serve this population with the dignity that women with these intellectual challenges deserve. It is a beautiful conversation that will touch many of you who know a young women in this siut This isn't about being “anti–birth control.” It's about being pro–informed consent. Women deserve the freedom to make choices rooted in knowledge, not fear or misinformation. Liberation begins when we discover the brilliance of our bodies and learn to work with them—not against them. And the truth is, we already have models for doing this. Body Literacy. Cycle Tracking. Menstrual Health Triage. Simplified Fertility Awareness. These tools exist, and they've been brought successfully to under-resourced populations. Now is the time to scale them. Why? Because every system in the body is interconnected and ordered toward reproductive health. Bones, muscles, the cardiovascular system, digestion, all of it supports the capacity to create and sustain life. So when we address the root causes of reproductive health disorders, the ripple effects extend far beyond fertility. Healing hormonal imbalance, for example, doesn't just regulate cycles it protects a women's health. This is why root-cause women's health should be the crown jewel of healthcare reform. Not a side conversation, central to it. ✨ About Katie E. Vidmar Katie E. Vidmar, MTS, is a Body Literacy and Fertility Awareness Educator from North Dakota. Let us know what you think of this episode! The search for longevity has long captivated humanity, yet we often overlook the powerful genetic switches already present within our bodies. Peptide bioregulators—short chains of amino acids that directly interact with our DNA—might be the missing link in our quest for extended healthspan. In this eye-opening conversation with peptide expert Phil Micans, we explore how these remarkable compounds originated from Soviet research in the 1980s and have since demonstrated astonishing results across millions of users. These organ-specific peptides work by providing direct instructions to our genes, either activating or silencing them based on what the body needs.Unlike conventional supplements requiring daily consumption, these bioregulators need only be taken for brief periods each month or quarter. For those seeking optimal results, Phil reveals the three cornerstone peptides—pineal (supporting melatonin and telomere length), thymus (boosting immunity), and blood vessel (improving circulation)—that address fundamental aspects of aging. The pineal gland deserves special attention in our longevity conversation. Research shows tumors only grow during daylight hours when melatonin is absent, leading to promising high-dose protocols for cancer patients. Even more fascinating is the pineal's potential role as our biological "counter" or death clock, raising intriguing questions about our ability to reset this internal timekeeper.Perhaps most compelling are the documented cases of supposedly irreversible conditions being improved through peptide protocols. From restoring vision in genetic blindness to rebalancing hormones during menopause, these bioregulators demonstrate remarkable regenerative capabilities without significant side effects. As we compare modern health challenges to our ancestors (who often enjoyed similar lifespans without modern medicine), we discover how today's environment accelerates aging through stress, poor water quality, and disconnection from natural rhythms. Peptide bioregulators offer a path back to our biological potential by working with our body's inherent wisdom rather than against it.Ready to discover the power of your body's own genetic switches? Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: (05:36) Ashley Filmore explains how she made the health, hormone balance, and body composition space her life's work(09:01) Ashley shares her experience with unhealthy dieting and deprivation(14:28) The number on the scale versus body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, and lean muscle(18:39) How certain hormones and body fat distribution correlate, and the importance of tracking your cycle(28:55) Ashley discusses symptoms that may indicate hormone imbalance(35:56) Adjustments to fitness routines and nutrition during your cycle(43:39) Other reasons your hormones can be depletedKEY TAKEAWAYS:The scale doesn't define health, but body composition does: A lower number on the scale doesn't accurately reflect your physical or mental well-being. Proper health is better measured by the balance between lean muscle mass and body fat percentage, which is significantly influenced by hormones that also determine where fat is stored—for example, cortisol can be associated with belly fat, insulin has been linked to love handles, and estrogen is often associated with weight stored in the hips and the lower belly.Where fat accumulates on your body can reveal significant hormonal imbalances, guiding lifestyle and nutritional changes as well as potential hormonal imbalances. Plus, even with a calorie deficit and strength training, stubborn fat won't budge unless you focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods—because it's not just about calories, but the quality of what you eat.Using cycle-tracking apps or devices like the Oura Ring helps women understand their hormonal rhythms, especially as cycles become irregular during perimenopause. By listening to your body, tracking symptoms, and identifying hormonal imbalances, you can tailor your nutrition, exercise, and recovery strategies to align with your current hormonal state, optimizing energy, mood, metabolism, and overall health.Walking and strength training are effective, low-stress ways to support hormonal and metabolic health, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Walking is a free, accessible exercise that improves body composition, hormonal balance, and mental well-being, while intense workouts may be too stressful when hormone levels are low. Incorporating gentle movements, such as yoga, and traditional strength training with compound exercises 2–3 times per week can help maintain health without overexertion.QUOTES: (25:34) “Get to know your body and your baseline, what's normal for you, as opposed to what your doctor might say is normal or common.” - Jenn Trepeck(16:57) “Your hormones matter. It's impacting everything: muscle mass, your body fat percentage and where your body fat is distributed on your body.” Ashley Fillmore(41:55) “Pay attention to how you feel because you may not be textbook, you may be a little outside of what I just mentioned, and that could be normal for you.” Ashley Fillmore(42:48) "The walking, the yoga, the more gentle exercises are probably going to be more effective and feel better when we're in that perimenopause or menopause phase.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramCheers to Your Success! Episode Summary In this episode, Erin Skinner welcomes Haley Smith, a Certified Fertility Awareness Practitioner and the founder of Innate Rhythm and the Fertility Freedom Podcast. Haley's mission is clear: to empower women overlooked by the traditional healthcare system with body literacy, self-trust, and fertility awareness. Together, they discuss how women can optimize fertility through nourishment, mindfulness, and lifestyle adjustments. Haley explains how adding nutrient-dense foods, improving sleep, and managing stress can create the right environment for conception. She also shares her personal experience of how emotional and physical stress impacted her menstrual cycle and fertility. Erin and Haley dive deep into the connection between safety signals to the body and successful conception, emphasizing that fertility is about more than just biology—it's about creating space in your life for new possibilities. Episode Highlights Mindful Eating for Fertility: Haley advocates for adding quality high proteins and whole foods to support fertility, rather than cutting things out. It's about sending safety signals to the body through nourishment. Body's Safety Signals & Fertility: Stress, over-exercising, and emotional turmoil can signal to the body that it's not safe to conceive. Haley shares how her own stressful breakup and calorie deficit caused her to stop ovulating for nine months. Fertility Awareness & Tracking: Haley highlights the importance of tracking your cycle and temperature to understand when you're ovulating. She explains that even if you're bleeding, you may not be ovulating—something only tracking can reveal. Foundations of Fertility: Before diving into supplements or other interventions, it's essential to focus on the foundations of sleep, stress management, exercise, and nutrition. Haley emphasizes starting with small changes like getting sunlight in the morning and increasing protein intake. Tailored Health Protocols: Haley explains her approach to working with clients, which starts with gathering data through cycle charting, lab work, and health intake forms. This helps her create personalized health protocols, with a commitment to at least four months of focused change. Resources Mentioned Haley's Practice: Innate Rhythm. Let us know what you think of this episode! Is infant circumcision a medical necessity or ritual abuse hidden in plain sight? Join us as we sit down with Eric Clapper, a former Harvard employee whose one-man show, "Sex and Circumcision: An American Love Story," sparked so much controversy that it led to his termination and a tragic legal battle. Eric's journey from academia to advocacy unveils the hidden costs of circumcision, both personal and societal, making a compelling case for bodily autonomy and justice. In this episode, we delve into the decline of circumcision rates in North America, exploring the ethical, medical, and legal arguments against the practice. We highlight the severe psychological and physical consequences of circumcision and the cultural pressures that perpetuate it. Eric shares insights into the historical and religious origins of circumcision and discusses how modern communities are beginning to reject these ancient practices in favor of protecting children's rights, as we progress towards creating a trauma-informed civil society. We also touch on the broader context of medicalized childbirth and medical trauma and the ways in which medical interventions, often deemed routine or necessary, can leave an energetic imprint no different than more overt physical abuse and sexual violations. By drawing parallels between circumcision and other medicalized practices, we emphasize the importance of informed consent and bodily autonomy for all patients, regardless of age, while respecting the way Nature designed our bodies, minds, and spirits to work together.Eric's experiences have driven him to pursue legal education and advocacy to combat genital mutilation at the state level. By drawing parallels to other harmful cultural practices, we stress the urgent need for legal and societal reform. This episode is a powerful call to action, encouraging listeners to raise awareness, support civil rights protections, and strive towards ending infant circumcision for a more empathetic and just society. You can learn more about Eric's work and how to support litigation to end male genital mutilation in the US at https://www.clopper.law/ . Zainab came to Matriarch Rising Festival and experienced it as a touchpoint of what's possible when women in their power come together. She witnessed the centering of mothers, the normalization of freebirth and embodied womanhood, and, of course, the pure, delicious magic. She took these lessons home with her, forever changed. Sam is a fertility, sex, and cycle educator, author and activist with over 20 years of experience in personal, professional, and clinical contexts.A former birth doula whose roots of study can be found in traditional midwifery, Sam's work rises from an ancient lineage of midwives, witches, & wise women. Together, we peel back the layers of history to reveal the entrenched fears surrounding women's reproductive health and challenge the narratives that have been handed down through generations. This episode promises to be an insightful excavation into the magic of menstruation, the medicalization of childbirth, and the potent power that comes from embracing our bodies' innate functions. As we converse with Sam, we shed light on the shifting landscapes of midwifery, the rise of medical dominance, and the evolution of the doula's role in modern healthcare. There's a term - body literacy - that's thrown around a lot in Fertility Awareness circles. And it may seem vague, "like, what part of our body are we talking about?" And it's true, you can become literate in any system of your body, technically.BUT your menstrual cycle is a window into your whole health - and has even been considered a fifth vital sign. However, you can only begin to perceive this embodied wisdom if you are naturally cycling (eg not using hormonal birth control). That said, there are legitimate reasons someone may choose to get on, stay on, or return to hormonal contraception. But if you're one - of many - who are transitioning off birth control and/or you want to understand your body and your options, this episode is a good starting point. This is another compilation episode with snippets from a previous interview and solo shows, as I'm still on content creation break while I get some of my own "wintering" in. First, you'll hear about vaginal fluids - what's normal and what's not - and a sneak peek into the topic of fertile cervical mucus.Next, Gabrielle Jansen shares a little about the politics and history of birth control, the experience of "pill shame" some might have and how to support your body when you ARE on hormonal birth control. Finally, I offer some basics on reasons you may be thinking about ditching your hormonal contraception and some first steps on how to support yourself in that transition. It's really just a glimpse into each of those interviews, but you'll get practical take-aways from each one. To listen to the episodes in full, check out the links below! Resources:ONLINE - Natural Contraception course coming Jan 2024 - get on the waitlist!LOCALS - Winter Embodied Birth Control Series in-person, 3 months, in Hope, ME - taught by myself and Gabrielle Jansen - learn more hereEpisode 17: How stress messes with your hormonesEpisode 23: Your body on birth control with Gabrielle JansenEpisode 46: Vaginal fluids - what's normal, what's not?Episode 84: Herbal allies for transitioning off hormonal birth controlIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! We talk about 'listening to our bodies', and that's an acquired skill. And we now have access to great technology to better understand the language our bodies speak. HRV, body temperature, monitoring sleep... but the vast majority of this tech is developed by men, for humans. Female bodies speak a whole different language week to week, day to day... not to mention throughout different stages of our life. So, Olivia Orchowski founded FemTek and developed a basal body ring that takes all this into account. A revolutionary smart ring developed exclusively for women, by women, to enable us with better body literacy to open the lines of communication between us and this biological Ferrari we cruise around in. What's that? You're managing a health condition such as Endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD, Infertility and Irregular Cycles...? Yep, it takes all that into account too. It's ace. She's ace! I've shared quite a bit about how my health and wellness has felt over the past few years. The hardest piece for me has been some of the ongoing symptoms that grew harder and harder to manage. Things like Anxiety, Depression, Fatigue, Weight Gain, Low Libido and Anger/Rage/No Fuse. As a Mom of 4, a wife and a woman who is incredibly passionate about inside out wellness - I knew diving inward to get more answers and direction was the path I needed to take. It hasn't been an easy road, but the healing and discovery has been worth it. I want women everywhere to know that the symptoms and feelings the may be experiencing in their day to day life are REAL. And there's a strong chance so much of it is interconnected with what's happening inside our bodies on a very deep, scientific, cellular level. It's a beautiful time to be in conversation with my friend and new mother, Chelsea Leyland. Chelsea is the co-founder of the menstrual health and wellness company, Looni, and is an epilepsy and endometriosis plant medicine advocate and activist. In this episode, we chat about her journey with two chronic conditions, natural forms of healing, and the necessity of body literacy throughout the healthcare system. When there's no education alongside information, how can informed decisions be made? Chelsea shares her experience with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and how she found cannabidiol to help ease her pain and symptoms. After a later-in-life endometriosis diagnosis, Chelsea began to navigate ways to find healing and ease her pain. Chelsea and I discuss our connection to pain, allopathic vs. naturopathic forms of healing, and how having a “healing toolbox” is powerful for supporting and honoring both our menstrual cycles and the cycles throughout life.  We can all take steps toward a more holistic, nurturing approach to our bodies, starting with grounding practices to help regulate the nervous system and bring inflammation down. Chelsea believes that education allows us to demand better policies. Because we deserve better. And we deserve awareness and change.  This is a beautiful conversation about finding personal forms of healing and sharing those findings as an advocate for a healthier, more aware world. On today's episode of The Momlife Mindset Podcast - I dive deeper into changing the narrative around health and wellness. Especially when it comes to all of us as females. We live in a world where the common narrative is filled with before and afters, quick fixes, drink this, take that, cut this out - and all the results you want will happen. While I won't knock the effort to try and encourage people to get started - I refuse to let women continue to believe that wellness comes fast, easy and never changes for us. Because it does. I have been learning so much personally - from my gut health journey to my mental health journey and now diving deeper into hormones. As I continue to learn, firsthand, I want to empower women to embrace the learning process too. And above all - TIME. Taking care of our health from the inside out takes time. It takes investing, it takes effort, it takes patience, it's for the long haul. Our long term health isn't something that clicks together overnight. And the most important thing to know? What once was working, may not be working anymore - and that doesn't mean we're broken...it simply means it's time to dive deeper and lean into learning and evolving too! My two best pieces of advice for women are: Diving into Body Literacy and Getting the Data. As we age and our bodies change, knowing our female physiology matters for long term health. What our hormones are doing, what's happening inside our gut, with blood sugar and so much more - it all matters. And the best way to learn more about what's actually happening? Working with a Functional Med Practitioner on things like appropriate bloodwork, the GI Map, The Dutch Test, etc. As mentioned in the podcast - you can plug into the SYNC digital course here: LEARN MORE HERE And if you're not cycling and you want to learn more about moon cycling and syncing up with the energy around us - tune in here: https://jennyswisher.com/women-are-lunar-beings/ I'd love to hear from you and connect further on our stories.   Welcome to the SYNC Your Life podcast episode #131! On this podcast, we will be diving into all things women's hormones to help you learn how to live in alignment with your female physiology. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life.  In today's episode, I'm announcing the launch of my NEW, co-created digital course: Body Literacy: Understanding the Gut Microbiome. I partnered with Dr. Laura Brown, Amazon #1 bestselling author of "Beyond Digestion: How Gut Health Connects to Your Mind, Body, and Soul" to create a video and resource rich course to help teach you the ins and outs of understanding your body. We help you "peel back the onion" on your own root causes, helping you to become your own best advocate. We discuss food sensitivities, the gut-mood connection, gut-liver connection, gut-hormone connection, and even the benefits of pre, pro, and postbiotics. Dr. Brown gives us the details on Leaky Gut and Candida, and proper foods to incorporate into your diet, including ways to get more fiber. We touch on fermented foods, lifestyle factors such as sleep, and hormone health. It's a fantastic educational course we are so excited to launch in correlation with a Facebook community (accessible once you've purchased). For a limited time, we are offering this at a discounted price. Check it out here! If you feel like something is "off" with your hormones, check out the FREE hormone imbalance quiz at sync.jennyswisher.com.  To learn more about the SYNC Digital Course, check out jennyswisher.com.  Let's be friends outside of the podcast!
