What do the stubborn body fat you can't seem to lose, your hormones, and metabolic health all have in common? Well…a lot! If you're nearing perimenopause or menopause, you can't miss this conversation. In this episode, host Jenn Trepeck dives into a candid and clarifying conversation with leading health and wellness expert Ashley Fillmore. Ashley is the founder and president of Metabolic Fix and host of the Cheers to Your Success podcast. With nearly 20 years of experience, she helps women heal their metabolism, achieve hormone balance, and support lasting body composition changes. Together, they unpack why so many women still feel lost in the noise of wellness advice and how to make sense of what they're experiencing day-to-day, at each phase of their cycle and even as their cycles change.. This episode is all about discovering your hormone balance, transforming your body composition, and redefining what true health looks and feels like. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: (05:36) Ashley Filmore explains how she made the health, hormone balance, and body composition space her life's work(09:01) Ashley shares her experience with unhealthy dieting and deprivation(14:28) The number on the scale versus body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, and lean muscle(18:39) How certain hormones and body fat distribution correlate, and the importance of tracking your cycle(28:55) Ashley discusses symptoms that may indicate hormone imbalance(35:56) Adjustments to fitness routines and nutrition during your cycle(43:39) Other reasons your hormones can be depletedKEY TAKEAWAYS:The scale doesn't define health, but body composition does: A lower number on the scale doesn't accurately reflect your physical or mental well-being. Proper health is better measured by the balance between lean muscle mass and body fat percentage, which is significantly influenced by hormones that also determine where fat is stored—for example, cortisol can be associated with belly fat, insulin has been linked to love handles, and estrogen is often associated with weight stored in the hips and the lower belly.Where fat accumulates on your body can reveal significant hormonal imbalances, guiding lifestyle and nutritional changes as well as potential hormonal imbalances. Plus, even with a calorie deficit and strength training, stubborn fat won't budge unless you focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods—because it's not just about calories, but the quality of what you eat.Using cycle-tracking apps or devices like the Oura Ring helps women understand their hormonal rhythms, especially as cycles become irregular during perimenopause. By listening to your body, tracking symptoms, and identifying hormonal imbalances, you can tailor your nutrition, exercise, and recovery strategies to align with your current hormonal state, optimizing energy, mood, metabolism, and overall health.Walking and strength training are effective, low-stress ways to support hormonal and metabolic health, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Walking is a free, accessible exercise that improves body composition, hormonal balance, and mental well-being, while intense workouts may be too stressful when hormone levels are low. Incorporating gentle movements, such as yoga, and traditional strength training with compound exercises 2–3 times per week can help maintain health without overexertion.QUOTES: (25:34) “Get to know your body and your baseline, what's normal for you, as opposed to what your doctor might say is normal or common.” - Jenn Trepeck(16:57) “Your hormones matter. It's impacting everything: muscle mass, your body fat percentage and where your body fat is distributed on your body.” Ashley Fillmore(41:55) “Pay attention to how you feel because you may not be textbook, you may be a little outside of what I just mentioned, and that could be normal for you.” Ashley Fillmore(42:48) "The walking, the yoga, the more gentle exercises are probably going to be more effective and feel better when we're in that perimenopause or menopause phase.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramCheers to Your Success! Haley's mission is clear: to empower women overlooked by the traditional healthcare system with body literacy, self-trust, and fertility awareness. Together, they discuss how women can optimize fertility through nourishment, mindfulness, and lifestyle adjustments. Haley explains how adding nutrient-dense foods, improving sleep, and managing stress can create the right environment for conception. She also shares her personal experience of how emotional and physical stress impacted her menstrual cycle and fertility. Erin and Haley dive deep into the connection between safety signals to the body and successful conception, emphasizing that fertility is about more than just biology—it's about creating space in your life for new possibilities. Episode Highlights Mindful Eating for Fertility: Haley advocates for adding quality high proteins and whole foods to support fertility, rather than cutting things out. It's about sending safety signals to the body through nourishment. Body's Safety Signals & Fertility: Stress, over-exercising, and emotional turmoil can signal to the body that it's not safe to conceive. Haley shares how her own stressful breakup and calorie deficit caused her to stop ovulating for nine months. Fertility Awareness & Tracking: Haley highlights the importance of tracking your cycle and temperature to understand when you're ovulating. She explains that even if you're bleeding, you may not be ovulating—something only tracking can reveal. Foundations of Fertility: Before diving into supplements or other interventions, it's essential to focus on the foundations of sleep, stress management, exercise, and nutrition. Haley emphasizes starting with small changes like getting sunlight in the morning and increasing protein intake. Tailored Health Protocols: Haley explains her approach to working with clients, which starts with gathering data through cycle charting, lab work, and health intake forms. This helps her create personalized health protocols, with a commitment to at least four months of focused change. Resources Mentioned Haley's Practice: Innate Rhythm. Let us know what you think of this episode! Is infant circumcision a medical necessity or ritual abuse hidden in plain sight? Join us as we sit down with Eric Clapper, a former Harvard employee whose one-man show, "Sex and Circumcision: An American Love Story," sparked so much controversy that it led to his termination and a tragic legal battle. Eric's journey from academia to advocacy unveils the hidden costs of circumcision, both personal and societal, making a compelling case for bodily autonomy and justice. In this episode, we delve into the decline of circumcision rates in North America, exploring the ethical, medical, and legal arguments against the practice. We highlight the severe psychological and physical consequences of circumcision and the cultural pressures that perpetuate it. Eric shares insights into the historical and religious origins of circumcision and discusses how modern communities are beginning to reject these ancient practices in favor of protecting children's rights, as we progress towards creating a trauma-informed civil society. We also touch on the broader context of medicalized childbirth and medical trauma and the ways in which medical interventions, often deemed routine or necessary, can leave an energetic imprint no different than more overt physical abuse and sexual violations. By drawing parallels between circumcision and other medicalized practices, we emphasize the importance of informed consent and bodily autonomy for all patients, regardless of age, while respecting the way Nature designed our bodies, minds, and spirits to work together.Eric's experiences have driven him to pursue legal education and advocacy to combat genital mutilation at the state level. By drawing parallels to other harmful cultural practices, we stress the urgent need for legal and societal reform. This episode is a powerful call to action, encouraging listeners to raise awareness, support civil rights protections, and strive towards ending infant circumcision for a more empathetic and just society. You can learn more about Eric's work and how to support litigation to end male genital mutilation in the US at https://www.clopper.law/ . Zainab is a brilliant maiden who has blazed a path of autonomy, teaching Fertility Awareness Method and body literacy to Arab women in her mother tongue of Arabic. Zainab came to Matriarch Rising Festival and experienced it as a touchpoint of what's possible when women in their power come together. She witnessed the centering of mothers, the normalization of freebirth and embodied womanhood, and, of course, the pure, delicious magic. She took these lessons home with her, forever changed. This year we're hyped to have Zainab back at MRF offering her workshop The Cycle Wisdom Map, an exploration of body literacy through the lens of the natural cycles around us. Samantha Zipporah joins me on this episode of the body literacy podcast to discuss conscious contraception and the wisdom of women's bodies. Sam is a fertility, sex, and cycle educator, author and activist with over 20 years of experience in personal, professional, and clinical contexts.A former birth doula whose roots of study can be found in traditional midwifery, Sam's work rises from an ancient lineage of midwives, witches, & wise women. She provides radical love for navigating the womb continuum & reclaiming ancestral wisdom. Together, we peel back the layers of history to reveal the entrenched fears surrounding women's reproductive health and challenge the narratives that have been handed down through generations. This episode promises to be an insightful excavation into the magic of menstruation, the medicalization of childbirth, and the potent power that comes from embracing our bodies' innate functions. As we converse with Sam, we shed light on the shifting landscapes of midwifery, the rise of medical dominance, and the evolution of the doula's role in modern healthcare. We scrutinize the implications of credentialing systems and insurance on personal health autonomy and ponder the intersection of commercial interests with traditional care practices. Through personal stories and historical context, we navigate the journey toward reclaiming ancestral wisdom and fostering radical love for the womb continuum. You can learn more about Sam and her work at https://www.samanthazipporah.com/This episode is sponsored by Pact organic cotton clothing. There's a term - body literacy - that's thrown around a lot in Fertility Awareness circles. And it may seem vague, "like, what part of our body are we talking about?" And it's true, you can become literate in any system of your body, technically.BUT your menstrual cycle is a window into your whole health - and has even been considered a fifth vital sign. However, you can only begin to perceive this embodied wisdom if you are naturally cycling (eg not using hormonal birth control). That said, there are legitimate reasons someone may choose to get on, stay on, or return to hormonal contraception. But if you're one - of many - who are transitioning off birth control and/or you want to understand your body and your options, this episode is a good starting point. This is another compilation episode with snippets from a previous interview and solo shows, as I'm still on content creation break while I get some of my own "wintering" in. First, you'll hear about vaginal fluids - what's normal and what's not - and a sneak peek into the topic of fertile cervical mucus.Next, Gabrielle Jansen shares a little about the politics and history of birth control, the experience of "pill shame" some might have and how to support your body when you ARE on hormonal birth control. Finally, I offer some basics on reasons you may be thinking about ditching your hormonal contraception and some first steps on how to support yourself in that transition. It's really just a glimpse into each of those interviews, but you'll get practical take-aways from each one. To listen to the episodes in full, check out the links below! We talk about 'listening to our bodies', and that's an acquired skill. And we now have access to great technology to better understand the language our bodies speak. HRV, body temperature, monitoring sleep... but the vast majority of this tech is developed by men, for humans. Female bodies speak a whole different language week to week, day to day... not to mention throughout different stages of our life. So, Olivia Orchowski founded FemTek and developed a basal body ring that takes all this into account. A revolutionary smart ring developed exclusively for women, by women, to enable us with better body literacy to open the lines of communication between us and this biological Ferrari we cruise around in. What's that? You're managing a health condition such as Endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD, Infertility and Irregular Cycles...? Yep, it takes all that into account too. It's ace. She's ace! I invite you to join me on a transformative journey, as I sit down with naturopath, Dr Barbara O'Neill, a true heroin of natural healing . After being silenced by Australian health authorities in a modern day natural medicine witch hunt, Barbara chose to continue spreading the message of self healing internationally by going on tour outside of the land down under. The health board's condemnation of her work turned out to be a blessing in disguise when videos of Barbara's lectures went super viral across social media platforms.Offering insight on natural healing with its basis in Biblical teachings, Barbara now educates people around the world on the body's intelligent design and its innate capacity to self heal. Her work honors a paradigm of medicine that exists outside of the disaster management model of allopathic medicine and she empowers patients with the knowledge that they are, in fact, in charge of facilitating their own healing.Barbara's work is part of a growing movement of sovereignty and self-empowerment in health. When we honor the laws of Nature and understand that health is not something someone else can DO to us, we are able to reclaim the health, happiness, and vitality that is our birthright. The body does not lie and there is no man made authority capable of silencing its truth.Barbara is a gift to those of us ready to take self-ownership of our own health. You can visit Barbara online at www.selfhealbydesign.com and www.mistymountainusa.com .This episode is sponsored by Pact organic cotton clothing. On today's episode of The Momlife Mindset Podcast, I dive deeper into 5 big, red flag symptoms that led me into root cause. I've shared quite a bit about how my health and wellness has felt over the past few years. The hardest piece for me has been some of the ongoing symptoms that grew harder and harder to manage. Things like Anxiety, Depression, Fatigue, Weight Gain, Low Libido and Anger/Rage/No Fuse. As a Mom of 4, a wife and a woman who is incredibly passionate about inside out wellness - I knew diving inward to get more answers and direction was the path I needed to take. It hasn't been an easy road, but the healing and discovery has been worth it. I want women everywhere to know that the symptoms and feelings the may be experiencing in their day to day life are REAL. And there's a strong chance so much of it is interconnected with what's happening inside our bodies on a very deep, scientific, cellular level. That's why I'm so passionate about spreading more knowledge and education around body literacy, hormone health and understanding our unique female physiology. If you're interested in diving into the SYNC Community and joining our FREE GROUP on Body Literacy and Hormone Health for September - click below: https://jennyswisher.idevaffiliate.com/145-1.html And as mentioned - I will be kicking off my Q4 Wellness Studio in early October. It's a beautiful time to be in conversation with my friend and new mother, Chelsea Leyland. Chelsea is the co-founder of the menstrual health and wellness company, Looni, and is an epilepsy and endometriosis plant medicine advocate and activist. In this episode, we chat about her journey with two chronic conditions, natural forms of healing, and the necessity of body literacy throughout the healthcare system. When there's no education alongside information, how can informed decisions be made? Chelsea shares her experience with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and how she found cannabidiol to help ease her pain and symptoms. After a later-in-life endometriosis diagnosis, Chelsea began to navigate ways to find healing and ease her pain. Chelsea and I discuss our connection to pain, allopathic vs. naturopathic forms of healing, and how having a “healing toolbox” is powerful for supporting and honoring both our menstrual cycles and the cycles throughout life. We can all take steps toward a more holistic, nurturing approach to our bodies, starting with grounding practices to help regulate the nervous system and bring inflammation down. Chelsea believes that education allows us to demand better policies. Because we deserve better. And we deserve awareness and change. This is a beautiful conversation about finding personal forms of healing and sharing those findings as an advocate for a healthier, more aware world. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform. Topics Covered: How Chelsea's endometriosis story began with epilepsy Chelsea's life-changing experience with cannabinoids Chelsea's activism and a documentary alongside her sister Why it took 10 years to diagnose Chelsea with endometriosis How endometriosis responds to natural medicine and stress management Chelsea's opinion of and connection to pain The power of an open mind around healing Looni's first year in the menstrual health and wellness space Resources Mentioned: WomanCode: Perfect Your Cycle, Amplify Your Fertility, Supercharge Your Sex Drive, and Become a Power Source by Alisa Vitti Guest Info: Follow Chelsea on Instagram @chelseleyland Chelsea's company, Looni Follow Me: Follow me on Instagram: @tonyapapanikolove Follow Rainbo on Instagram: @rainbomushrooms Shop Rainbo: rainbo.com

On today's episode of The Momlife Mindset Podcast - I dive deeper into changing the narrative around health and wellness. Especially when it comes to all of us as females. We live in a world where the common narrative is filled with before and afters, quick fixes, drink this, take that, cut this out - and all the results you want will happen. While I won't knock the effort to try and encourage people to get started - I refuse to let women continue to believe that wellness comes fast, easy and never changes for us. Because it does. I have been learning so much personally - from my gut health journey to my mental health journey and now diving deeper into hormones. As I continue to learn, firsthand, I want to empower women to embrace the learning process too. And above all - TIME. Taking care of our health from the inside out takes time. It takes investing, it takes effort, it takes patience, it's for the long haul. Our long term health isn't something that clicks together overnight. And the most important thing to know? What once was working, may not be working anymore - and that doesn't mean we're broken...it simply means it's time to dive deeper and lean into learning and evolving too! My two best pieces of advice for women are: Diving into Body Literacy and Getting the Data. As we age and our bodies change, knowing our female physiology matters for long term health. What our hormones are doing, what's happening inside our gut, with blood sugar and so much more - it all matters. And the best way to learn more about what's actually happening? Working with a Functional Med Practitioner on things like appropriate bloodwork, the GI Map, The Dutch Test, etc. As mentioned in the podcast - you can plug into the SYNC digital course here: LEARN MORE HERE And if you're not cycling and you want to learn more about moon cycling and syncing up with the energy around us - tune in here: https://jennyswisher.com/women-are-lunar-beings/ I'd love to hear from you and connect further on our stories. Dr. Christiane Northrup joins me on this episode of the Body Literacy Podcast to discuss Sexuality, Spirituality, and Medicine. Dr. Northrup is a visionary pioneer in women's health. She is a board-certified OB-GYN who spent more than 30 years in clinical practice and is a former assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Christiane is the three-time New York Times best selling author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause and Goddesses Never Age. In 2013, Reader's Digest named Dr. Northrup one of the 100 Most Trusted People in America. In 2016, she was named one of Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul 100, a group of leaders who are using their voices and talent to awaken humanity. Dr. Northrup is a renegade in modern medicine embracing body, mind, spirit, and emotions to teach women how to tune into their own inner wisdom. Referred to as a rebel, rock star, and authority on what can go right with the female body by her own colleagues, Dr. Northrup is flipping the script on conventional medicine that addresses the human body as a battlefield rather than an abundant ecosystem with the innate capacity for growth, freedom, joy, pleasure, and balance. In our conversation, Dr. Northrup and I explore why ancient healing arts included sexuality and spirituality as part of a comprehensive, mind-body-spirit approach to whole person health and how this separation in modern medicine contributes to poor health outcomes. We discuss relational alchemy, the role of medicalized childbirth in creating unhealthy relationships with authority, love making as a means to activating the circuitry of the divine, tango as a vehicle for embodiment and the exploration masculine and feminine energies, and much more. Dr. Northrup says there is nothing more healing than a love affair and unhealthy relationships can be the most significant factor in the manifestation of disease. You can find Dr. Northrup online at https://www.drnorthrup.com and her supplement and lifestyle brand, Amata Life, is at https://amatalife.com .This episode is brought to you by LifeWave photo therapy patches. For years, people with menstrual cycles have been gaslit - our symptoms ignored, often being told we are "just hormonal" and that "going on birth control" will fix all of our problems. A big surprise in your healing journey is how bad you are at body literacy. Body literacy is being able to listen to your body and interpret the messages into what you actually need. We're constantly being sent signals with our body - intuition, gut feeling, love, joy, heartache...it's all held in the body. When you start being preceptive to the subtle (and sometimes not to subtle signals), it's kinda surprising how little you have actually learned to speak the language of your body. Now is the time to create awareness, listen, and starting talking! This week, Britt chats with Selin Bilgin, the founder of Luscious Living: where personal growth meets wellness, the author of The Painless Period Guide, and a hormone health educator. She believes that lasting change occurs from addressing the mind, body and spirit. In this episode, Britt and Selin chat about the All-or-Nothing Mentality towards food, her history with binge eating and how she now focuses on balance and a better relationship with food.If you struggle with the diet rollercoaster, and an all-or-nothing mentality towards food, this is definitely an episode that you NEED to listen to! Listen in as Britt and Selin chat about;Selin's health history, and how her previous disordered eating has brought her to where she is today, helping women create lasting change. How Selin describes binge eating, and her own struggle with it What do your cravings mean? Many view it as a sign of weak willpower, but let's instead view them as our body sending us a messageWhy an all-or-nothing mentality towards food doesn't work, and might be getting in the way of your health goals. Sometimes food feels like an addiction when we limit food groups, or start fasting because we think it's healthy or good for weight loss. Selin chats about why it is important to focus on a sustainable approach to nutrition. It's healthy and normal to want to have weight loss goals, but there are other measures for success out thereHow Selin found it helpful when she started paying attention to those other determinants for health and how food made her feel, vs how it made her lookWhat Selin would say to listeners who are waiting until January to work on health goals, or feel like they're restarting every MondaySelin gives tips, tricks or tools might listeners find helpful to get out of the all-or-nothing, revolving door of diet culture Selin describes what body literacy is and how she incorporates it into her programs with clients? Today Michelle is speaking With Lucy Lines of Two Lines Fertility. They talk about: What information is missing in sex ed in highschool Why it is so hard to get pregnant Egg quality, egg reserve and what happens to eggs over a person's lifetime Lifespan on eggs and sperm Ovulation timing with sex Embryo health, quality and rating (and if that actually matters) Advice for people navigating the IVF experience Lucy's Bio As a fully trained and clinically experienced embryologist Lucy has had the good fortune to travel the world practising her craft in IVF labs in Australia, Sweden, Ireland and the UK. Over her first 17 years in the fertility ‘industry' she became increasingly frustrated over the ‘business' aspect that was creeping into the large IVF companies and the huge gaps that was creating for patients accessing those services. After a redundancy at 37 weeks pregnant, (and at 44 years of age) she saw an opportunity to fill those gaps - with education, care, support, guidance and space for women and couples experiencing difficulties with their fertility - totally independent of the big businesses! She now offers her services through Two Lines Fertility - with her signature program; IVF WTF, her website and blog, e-courses and, of course, 1:1 support, she now helps women and couples feel empowered, and more importantly EDUCATED and in control of their fertility, whether they are right at the beginning of considering growing their families, in the depths of IVF treatment, or anywhere in between LUCY'S LINKS Lucy's Website Lucy on Instagram Lucy on Facebook IMPORTANT LINKS Work With Michelle Grab The Infertility Stress Relief Toolkit For FREE Sign Up For Michelle's Email List

The Business of Birth Control is a new documentary directed by Abby Epstein and produced by Ricki Lake, who achieved international acclaim for their revolutionary 2008 film, "The Business of Being Born". Abby joins us today to discuss why she and Ricki made their new film, which boldly shines a light on some of the severe side effects that accompany hormonal birth control, including death -- and the fact that congress, and the pharmaceuticals who make the pill, have long known about these adverse outcomes and have done nothing about it. Most disturbing of all, even though women have gathered, protested and demanded a safer and better-quality pill since the 1960s when these side-effects became known, there has been absolutely no advance in technology nor any improvement in safety standards in decades. In fact, the majority of the budget is allocated toward marketing and advertising. And while most bereaved families have been gagged in exchange for financial settlements, in the film we meet the parents of those who refused and who are demanding change. Did you know a full fifty-percent of women who go on the pill come off it due to side effects? This only drives up the risk of unwanted pregnancies. We also discuss the lack of informed consent and unnecessary risks taken with women and young, prepubescent girls, who are encouraged to go on the pill to clear up acne. Abby gives us an insider's look into how the film is spun in the media as controversial and is mischaracterized as "anti-birth control" when the opposite is true: The Business of Birth Control is overt in its demand for safer birth control and more education; and, for those who wish to come off the pill, it seeks to empower women to understand their fertility cycles so they can choose the birth control that's safest and most effective for them. Abby and Ricki have been on a busy media tour and we're so grateful they came on the Down to Birth Show to invite us into this important conversation regarding women's health, choice, autonomy and consent. To view The Business of Birth Control, visit the website and use promo code DOWNTOBIRTH to stream at 50% off. She has been a certified instructor in the Boston Cross Check method of NFP since 2013, and her parent-daughter cycle and period education program, Cycle Prep, was a finalist project in the 2021 OSV Innovation challenge. Christina is a good friend of ours and we had a blast chatting about her inspiration for both of the programs she has developed - Cycle Prep for girls and their parents (now also available in Spanish) and an NFP ambassador program for parishes. She led us in a robust and enlightening conversation about the “Language of the Body” as it relates to the Theology of the Body, and as it applies to each individual woman - not just within the context of sex. We even explored what truly makes a couple fertile, and it isn't simply their ability to procreate. Enjoy the show! In this informative episode, Laura shares her knowledge and wisdom around a topic that has been denied to women for so many generations; autonomy in managing our own reproductive health. Laura speaks about Body Literacy for Girls and the ways in which we can create spaces to guide young women in reconnecting with their mammalian nature - to come into their power before they outsource pharmaceutical products or medical advice. We speak about the Pill and it's damaging effects, the natural forms of contraception and conception (that no one is speaking about), the difference between The Rhythm Method and FAM (The Fertility Awareness Method), learning to observe the body for hormonal health and fertility and our common dislike of Period Tracking Apps.We chat about common female reproductive health issues such as PCOS, Endometriosis, cysts and fibroids - some of the causes of these and offers some wise woman practices to correct them. Laura delves into Postpartum Tracking for Mothers and squashes the myths around a postpartum mother's cycle returning. This episode if full of the wisdom we wished our Grandmothers and the Crones in our communities had of passed down to us!---Connect with Anita at www.themidwitch.comAnita Katherine, The MidwitchReconnecting you with your medicine, magic, & power.Follow me on IG: @themidwitchFreebies: https://themidwitch.com/thecauldronPregnant? Tara McCann is a menstrual health coach and a Mama to two girls ages 10 and 12. From Tara's Website: "I started tracking my menstrual cycle when my husband and I were trying to get pregnant, over a decade ago. At that time, I was hyper-focused on ovulation and when I was fertile. Through the years, I've learned so much more than that though. I've put all my knowledge of science and the human body from my degrees and I've investigated how the menstrual cycle works and how hormones interact in the body. I've had specialty training in Health Coaching from both the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and the Integrative Women's Health Institute. As well as completing various programs and years of self-study specifically about the menstrual cycle, fertility and women's health. All that means is that I've done the hard work of investigating and learning so you don't have to! You don't have to spend hours going down the google rabbit hole wondering what information is important to you, I can help with that. I can help you identify patterns in your menstrual cycle and find ways to support your health so you're living in the flow of your hormones and not fighting with your body anymore." It didn't even occur to me that I should be thinking of shifting some healthy habits before getting pregnant. For many people, this isn't something that happens totally planned, so a lot of us don't do the prep work. But for those of you who CAN, this episode is for you.It wasn't until after I'd had my second child that I started learning more about environmental health – i.e. toxins – and learned that preparing for pregnancy 3 months prior to conception is recommended. The CDC website on preconception health actually has a section on environmental exposures – They say:“Avoid harmful chemicals, environmental contaminants, and other toxic substances such as synthetic chemicals, metals, fertilizer, bug spray, and cat or rodent feces around the home and in the workplace. These substances can hurt the reproductive systems of men and women. They can make it more difficult to get pregnant. Exposure to even small amounts during pregnancy, infancy, childhood, or puberty can lead to diseases. Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from toxic substances at work and at home.”It stops short of giving advice for what you can do in your daily life beyond workplace exposures. In this episode, I'll break down why pre-conception toxin reduction is so important and offer strategies to help you reduce the toxins that are known to have the biggest impact.Links Mentioned:Free Guide - 4 Hormone Disruptors to Avoid Before Having a Baby: https://greenathome.ca/prenatalguide6-Week Course - Prepping for Pregnancy: https://greenathome.ca/preppingforpregnancyRelated Episodes:Episode 33 | Cycle Charting for Birth Control & Body Literacy with Nora Pope, FCP & Dr. Jessica Liu, ND:https://greenathome.ca/podcast/ep33-cycle-charting-for-birth-control-body-literacy-with-nora-pope-fcp-dr-jessica-liu-nd/Episode 30 | Hormone Disruptors are the Worst:https://greenathome.ca/podcast/ep30-hormone-disruptors-are-the-worst/Episode 4 | Hormone Disruptors & Pregnancy - What You Need to Know:https://greenathome.ca/podcast/ep04-hormone-disruptors-pregnancy-what-you-need-to-know/*****Green Product Forum: https://facebook.com/groups/greenproductforumInstagram: https://instagram.com/emma_greenathomeWebsite: https://greenathome.ca
As many of you know, for the past 4 years I've been writing a new book. It's called Hormone Intelligence and I wanted to share with you an interview about my book, with talk show host, actor and filmmaker, Ricki Lake, and documentary producer, Abby Epstein, who created The Business of Being Born, and the forthcoming Business of Birth Control.
I've touched on the pill in other episodes, but not for actual birth control. When I learned about the work Nora Pope and Jessica Liu were doing to educate and raise awareness about cycle charting - an alternative form of birth control - I was intrigued. But what I learned after talking with them is how beneficial cycle charting can be for overall health. This episode will be valuable for you whether you're actively trying to avoid getting pregnant or simply want to learn more about your cycle. If you've got a pre-teen or teen who will be or has already started menstruating, this will be incredibly important for you as well because we talk about the issues with increasing use of the pill for cycle regulation in teens. And if you have a teen, or a pre-teen, listen to this episode then queue up episode 8 where I chatted with Dr. Erin TeWinkel on healthy teen periods. In this episode, we cover:What happens during a healthy menstrual cycleHow the birth control pill worksThe importance of white flow (or cervical fluid)The problems with the pill (hint: it's in our water)Why the pill shouldn't be the go-to for teen period regulationWhen the pill may be warrantedHow to use cycle charting for birth control, fertility, monitoring PCOS and other symptomsNora Pope is a retired naturopathic doctor who has been educating physicians, surgeons, midwives, pharmacists, and health experts on the scientific use of natural medicines since 2003.Dr. Jessica Liu, ND is the owner and clinical director of Lakeside Natural Health Centre in Mississauga, Ontario and has over 15 years of expertise and clinical excellence in the field of fertility, women's health and pregnancy care.
