New York Times science journalist Emily Anthes, author of The Great Indoors, has spent a lot of time thinking about how buildings shape our lives, from mood to mortality. From designing hospitals that speed up recovery, to developing autism-friendly apartments, to rejigging offices to boost productivity — the interior of the built environment can be a crucial factor in determining human health and happiness. After all, we spend 90% of our time inside. So why not use soundproofing, plants, and universal design to make our inner worlds a dreamy place to be?Join the Building Good community today:https://www.buildinggood.caLinkedIn

In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with Matt Omernick, a pioneer in leveraging interactive technology for health and cognitive improvement. We explore his journey from traditional game development to creating transformative digital therapeutics, touching on how technology like video games and AI is reshaping cognitive health, creativity, and human potential. Matt also shares his insights into the FDA approval process for these groundbreaking tools, discusses the role of creativity in a tech-driven future, and highlights the importance of ethical AI practices. Once stigmatized, video games are now proving to be powerful tools in promoting mental health, supported by rigorous scientific evidence. These innovations open a new frontier in digital therapeutics, making it possible to create adaptive experiences that train the brain and yield measurable, durable improvements in cognitive function. The Role of AI in Creativity and Problem-Solving: AI is reshaping creativity by serving as an augmentation tool rather than a replacement for human ingenuity. Matt draws parallels to the introduction of tools like Photoshop, emphasizing that AI enables artists and creatives to work faster, experiment more, and push boundaries, while still relying on human input to guide its applications. This partnership between humans and AI is a significant shift, particularly in industries like gaming and digital art.The Cognitive Crisis of Overstimulation: Modern society faces a cognitive crisis driven by unprecedented levels of stimulation from technology. Matt discusses how primitive brain structures are struggling to cope with the demands of a hyper-connected world. However, instead of retreating from technology, he advocates leveraging it intelligently to create systems that help humans adapt and thrive in this new environment.FDA Approval as a Milestone for Digital Therapeutics: Achieving FDA approval for a video game-based therapeutic was a groundbreaking step, validating the legitimacy of this new form of medicine. The process involved creating a new regulatory framework tailored to digital products, blending the rigor of traditional clinical trials with the flexibility of software development. This achievement paves the way for future innovations in digital health. The Power of Closed-Loop Feedback Systems: Closed-loop systems, which continuously measure and adapt based on user input, are central to the success of digital therapeutics and other adaptive technologies. Matt explains how this approach not only optimizes cognitive training but also offers a model for creating highly personalized and effective interventions in health and wellness.Ethics and Responsibility in AI Development: Matt underscores the critical need for ethical practices in AI, particularly in creative fields. Protecting artists' rights, ensuring transparency in how AI is trained, and addressing potential biases are essential for fostering a future where technology serves humanity's best interests without exploitation or harm.A Hopeful Vision for the Future: Despite potential dystopian outcomes, Matt remains optimistic about the trajectory of technology. He believes humanity's adaptability and creativity will guide us toward solutions that enhance our lives and address major challenges. His work exemplifies this optimism, focusing on creating tools that blend technological sophistication with ethical and human-centered design principles.

Now based in sunny Arizona, her interior design career started with a personal journey to renovate and adapt her first home to fit accessibility needs while having a high level of style. In 2009 she incurred a C6-C8 spinal cord injury and has been a wheelchair user ever since. She is diagnosed with an incomplete C8 spinal cord injury which has obviously changed the way she lives in the blink of an eye. As a person with a disability, it seemed the majority of options to make homes accessible were straight-up ugly and very hospital-like. It got her thinking…we can do better than this! Combining her perspective of disability with her life-long passion for interior design fueled Maegan to find creative ways to make spaces beautifully accessible. The common solution is to create different training for each group, but this is inefficient, and many employees find the need to train in both. In addition, regional differences tend to be ignored in order to meet training deadlines. A Child of Nature Colombia-born, Fernando was surrounded by the fertile land of the City of Eternal Spring. Coffee plantations, flower farms, and a variety of butterflies are among his earliest childhood memories prior to his family's big move to New York. “I've always been immersed and impressed by the abundance of natural and urban ecologies and I learned to respect the natural environment very much.” - Fernando Arias His first interests involved tinkering with toys and their machineries, eventually leading him to become part of the military as a tech mechanic, but his career track was never a linear path. Over time, he switched gears.   The Greatest Influencer It was when he moved to San Francisco that he met the person who enabled him to change paths. With his talent in collage and 3D art, Fernando was steered into thinking about taking up architecture classes. Fernando's interest in the physics of buildings grew into a fascination with how forces and nature affect the form of buildings. He went abroad and got more immersed in the landscape environment.   Integrating Nature in Design A few years down the road, he furthered his studies at Columbia University. Fernando came to a deeper understanding of how various factors come into play to meet the green standards of the built environment. “Thinking about urban systems was not just merely about ways to transportation or energy. It was also about public health and economic drivers in cities and how all of these things work together to prepare cities for challenges.” - Fernando Arias To hear more about Fernando's many realizations and the evolution of his career as a LEED specialist, download and listen to the episode!   Learn more about Fernand Arias: Connect with him on LinkedIn Follow him on Twitter   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES: Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram   Don't forget to leave a positive rating and review on iTunes if you truly enjoyed the show. At its best, the web is a model of efficiency, with a single document playing to multiple contexts. Adaptive design provides the basis for this flexibility, with documents that move gracefully between small and large screen and printed page, with multiple stops in between. For the web designer, designs that adapt are far more difficult to accomplish than fixed, controlled pages. But adaptive design is also liberating, for designers and users alike. Designers are relieved of the burden of trying to devise a single design that works for all users. Users are spared the frustration of trying to navigate environments that do not take into account their use context. This session will focus on the practice of adaptive design. We will begin with document design and how to create machine-friendly source documents. Next, we will discuss best practices for adaptive design, including page layouts that accommodate different window widths, functional elements that can be worked via the keyboard, and styling for print and mobile contexts. Finally, we will discuss the partnership between designer and user in an adaptive, user-controlled environment. Sarah Horton is Director of Web Strategy, Design, and Infrastructure at Dartmouth College.
