Did you know that between 1834 and 1917, more than one million Coolies were taken across the Kala Pani, or Dark Waters, to the plantations of Malaya, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad, British Guiana, Jamaica, and British Honduras? In “Coolie Woman: the Odyssey of Indenture,” Gaiutra Bahadur describes how the British and other Colonial Powers transformed generations of skilled Indians into an “indistinguishable mass of plantation laborers.” Part of that transformation took part during the journey from India to the Caribbean which, for many, was unimaginably excruciating. In fact, poor ventilation, outbreaks of disease, and a lack of food was common aboard the ships used to transport Indentured Indians. When they reached their destination, they were met with a hostile and unfamiliar environment and forced to work long hours for low wages. But despite all odds, they persevered and laid a foundation that future generations would build on. Bobby Balachandran, founder and CEO of governance, risk and compliance company Exterro, has just been named LegalTech CEO of the Year in the Legaltech Breakthrough Awards. In a year in which so many legal tech companies have seen significant growth, it is a notable honor. But Balachandran is hardly resting on his laurels. He is already eyeing an IPO in the year ahead. A computer scientist by training, Balachandran founded Exterro in 2008, quickly convincing a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company to sign on as his first customer. In 2018, Exterro received a reported $100 million investment – at that point one of the largest investments ever in a legal tech company – and went on to make two major acquisitions – of data privacy company Jordan Lawrence and digital forensics company AccessData. Balachandran joins host Bob Ambrogi to discuss his leadership philosophy as a legal tech CEO, his company's formation and growth, his views on the legal tech market, and his plans for his company in the years ahead. “Your obstacles don't care about what you've been through.” - Chinna Balachandran Fail is a four letter word that most of us avoid like the plague. We live in a society that is obsessed with achievement, yet has no tolerance for failure. But any successful person will tell you that regular and consistent failure is not only part of the path to success...failure IS the path. Without embracing failure, you'll never learn how to overcome obstacles or become resilient in the face of adversity thus never achieving your goals. You don't get to choose your obstacles, so when obstacles choose you, you have to be ready. That was certainly the case with today's guest, Chinna Balachandran. In 2019 Chinna was suddenly and unexpectedly afflicted with an acute subdural hematoma, or in layman's terms, a slow brain bleed with a mortality rate of 50%-90%. The brain bleed was so severe that his brainstem compressed into his spinal cord. When he awoke from emergency brain surgery, he found himself paralyzed on the left side of his body, unsure of his cognitive abilities, and incapable of taking care of himself. Now just two years later Chinna is back to work as a school psychologist, an advocate for neuro-trauma survivors, newly married, and has competed on American Ninja Warrior two times. His recovery, on paper, is nothing short of miraculous. But when you hear him talk, he tells it as a simple practice of accepting where he was day after day, taking tiny steps forward, and celebrating the small wins. Failure was simply a stepping stone on the road to success. Though I sincerely hope you never have to endure a traumatic brain injury, the lessons learned from this conversation apply to any obstacles you might encounter. Prepare to be inspired and armed with practical strategies to take on your own road to success. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Chinna's life before his traumatic brain injury. The events that led up to his brain injury. What led Chinna to become a school psychologist working with deaf and blind children. The details of his brain injury and the awful prognosis he received. The list of side effects and symptoms that he was plagued with after leaving the hospital. The thoughts that Chinna had when he was in the hospital and recovering. How he decided to train for American Ninja Warrior. KEY TAKEAWAY: The first step to any challenge is accepting where you are now. Gratitude and celebrating small wins was essential in his recovery. Guest Bio: Chinna Balachandran works to support students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach as a school psychologist in Southern California. He currently works in a Level 14 locked psychiatric residential treatment facility for adolescents. He has worked in residential settings that specialize in low-incidence disabilities and typical public schools throughout the last decade. In addition to practicing school psychology, Chinna was also once a hobby boxer. After driving home from a spar in early 2019, he began noticing signs of neurological dysfunction. He had unknowingly sustained an acute subdural hematoma, a slow brain bleed. He was incredibly fortunate to awake from surgery at all, but he suddenly found himself paralyzed on the left side of his body, unsure of his cognitive abilities, and entirely incapable of taking care of himself. He has since recovered and resumed his school psychologist responsibilities in full while also learning a new sport to compete on NBC's American Ninja Warrior, in the hopes that his journey can help others suffering like he was. Jyoti Gulati Balachandran's Narrative Pasts: The Making of a Muslim Community in Gujarat, c. 1400-1650 (Oxford University Press, 2020) explores the complex power of Sufi texts in creating Muslim communities in Gujarat from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Balachandran focuses on three main Sufi saints, including Ahmad Khattu, whose disciples chronicled his life and legacy through various literary productions in Persian and Arabic. The study provides a social history of Gujarat through a deep analysis of Sufi textual traditions, such as compilations of public assemblies (malfuzat) and genealogical and biographical (tazkirat) texts. The complex process of textual production and architectural developments, such as Sufi shrines, in Gujarat showcases a vibrant and complex history of Islam, one that hinges on Gujarat sultans, Suhrawardi Sufis, and local Muslim communities. The book provides significant insights into Gujarat's sultanate and Sufism, while also further complicating the history of medieval and early modern South Asian Islam. This book will be of interest to those who think and write about Sufism, South Asian Islamic history, sacred spaces and textual production and much more. In this episode, Lindsey and Ali interview Dr. Jyoti Gulati Balachandran, Assistant Professor of History at Penn State, about her book Narrative Pasts: The Making of a Muslim Community in Gujarat, c. 1400-1650 (Oxford University Press, July 2020) The Gujarat region of western India has a long role as a maritime and commercial center in the Indian Ocean, but the rich history of its Muslim community - and the important role of Sufis in developing Gujarat's identity as a distinct region - has been overlooked. Dr. Balachandran argues that Arabic and Persian literary production among learned Muslim men was crucial to the development of Gujarat as a coherent region between the 15th and 17th centuries, plugging it in to developments across South Asia and beyond. Sufis were particularly important in this endeavor, and she urges us to seriously consider why and how different genres such as taẓkira or manāqib were chosen by these writers instead of dismissing them all under the imposed category of hagiography. Balachandran shows how textual histories and the tomb complexes of Sufi scholars contribute another source for history beyond that of the court, serving as two poles that reinforced one another's place in time as well as a specific region. Sufis allowed Sultans to ensure that the Muslim community expanded and prospered, and just as the Sultans militarily defined their kingdoms, Sufis sketched out realms of spiritual rule through these institutions and narratives about the past. One important example that Dr. Balachandran touches on is the figure of Shaykh Ahmad Khattu, a 15th century Sufi who became the Shaykh of Ahmad Shah I of the Muzaffarids of Gujarat. While there is little contemporary writing about him, the complex that is built for him after his death by the Muzaffarids as well as the histories written by Suhrawardi Sufis in the centuries after his death make him an important pivot in the history of Islam and Gujarat.

The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon GertnerBell Labs was one of a kind organisation that launched the information age. Developed as an organisation that helped solve problems that AT&T faced such as; How do we keep telephone poles from rotting? What kind of insulation would ensure that the telephone wires don't need a constant replacement? They focused on science rather than just engineering. The focus on basics divorced from the need to think about commercial viability ultimately delivered. Radar, Transistor, Unix, C, Laser, fibre optics and many more innovations came out of the labs. This book chronicles the rise and fall of the organisation. This book was recommended to me by Dr Balachandran A. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.Dr Balachandran A is the General Manager of the Vellore Institute of Technology - Technology Business Incubator (VIT-TBI). He has been running the incubator for the past 20 years. VIT-TBI was one of the first incubators under the TBI program of the Department of Science and Technology. He has had a front-row seat to watch the startup and innovation ecosystem evolve in India.I spoke to him about the things I read in the book and sought his perspectives around innovation development from an Indian context.Since he runs an incubator, he is constantly thinking about ways of improving the emergence of innovation and nurturing them. He has been active in Industry, Academia and Government initiatives and brings a unique perspective. I hoped to capture the same in this podcast. Recycle Michael interviews Nik Balachandran, Founder and CEO of Zabble Inc. and certified TRUE™ Zero Waste Advisor. During the Conversation, Michael coins the term "Garbology 2.0" as they discuss technology and waste reduction. Nik’s passion for hiking and open water swimming led him into the waste industry, after he kept encountering trash in otherwise beautiful natural areas. Driven to take on the growing problem of waste, Nik realized a crucial piece was missing from zero waste initiatives: data. In 2016, he founded Zabble Inc. to create a SaaS platform with mobile and cloud technology, to help large educational institutions and corporate organizations track their zero waste programs and gain real-time insights into their waste stream. Prior to this, Nik worked at seminal startups in the San Francisco Bay Area bringing new ideas to life in the areas of noise cancellation, clinical data analysis, patient medication adherence and indoor air quality. In addition to his role as CEO of Zabble, Nik also serves as a board member for Northern California Recycling Association (NCRA), and actively participates in zero waste advocacy. https://www.zabbleinc.com/ https://newswatchtv.com/2020/03/27/zabble-newswatch-review/ Download Zabble Zero: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/log-zero/id1435045530 Episode engineered by Crystal Awareness

Bimal Patel is an architect, urbanist and academic. He is President of CEPT University. He also heads HCP which is a multi-disciplinary design, planning and management practice based in Ahmedabad. Bimal Patel's research focuses on architecture and urban planning, real estate markets, regulatory frameworks and land management. He has won numerous awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1992). In 2019 he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours. B.R. Balachandran is an urban planner with over 25 years of experience, currently engaged in doctoral research at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. After 10 years at Environmental Planning Collaborative, Ahmedabad, in 2007, he co-founded Alchemy Urban Systems, a planning practice in Bangalore and also served in senior advisory roles at institutions such as CDD Society, BORDA and ITDP. While engaged in research on post-disaster recovery in the US, he has continued to work on planning projects in India. In the fifth and final episode of their series of conversations on making city planning work in India, Dr. Bimal Patel and B.R. Balachandran discuss why city planners in India are often resigned to not seeing their plans implemented despite numerous experiences to the contrary. They discuss three important aspects of making implementable plans: (i) ensuring that plans are fair and equitable in distributing the costs and benefits of planning; (ii) working with the political process of planning, communicating plans effectively, engaging in dialogue and negotiating with stakeholders and (iii) focusing on raising resources for implementing the plans. In the end, they recap the main elements of the whole podcast series.
Zabble recently pivoted to assist hospitals during this pandemic time to help hospitals monitor PPE contamination to streamline collection and hauling costs. Zabble has been featured on AMC’s NewsWatchTV, Resource Recycling, SF Examiner and Waste 360 for an ongoing project with UCSF to help them achieve their zero waste goal by 2020.

In the fourth episode of their series of conversations on making city planning work in India, Bimal Patel and B.R. Balachandran discuss the importance of keeping affordability in mind when framing regulations, norms and standards. Starting with housing affordability, they talk about how unrealistic norms and standards can be counterproductive, resulting in outcomes that are quite the opposite of what they set out to achieve, often excluding and rendering illegal, large sections of urban population. They also discuss what approach we should take to norms and standards, keeping affordability in mind.

In the third episode of their series of conversations on making city planning work in India, Bimal Patel and B.R. Balachandran discuss how urban planning in India needs to learn to work with a market economy. Bimal talks about the historical context in which planning in India adopted the approach of "providing what the city needs" and why that doesn't work. The discussants argue that the role of planning is to create a framework of rules for the market to operate efficiently. Planning should seek to provide only those goods and services that the market cannot or will not provide efficiently.

They look at how plans are excessively deterministic and why they take refuge in a "predict and provide" approach. Bimal argues that conventional plans delusively seek stable outcomes, while economies are always in flux. Such attitudes have been the primary reasons for dysfunctional cities. Later in the conversation, they explore a practical and meaningful approach to planning in the face of unpredictability, identifying the critical elements that need to be planned and others that need to be flexible.

Balachandran, urban planner and collaborator of Dr. Patel, the need for a paradigm shift in the way we look at city planning in India They reflect on why city planning in India has been consistently ineffective for several decades and what it will take to change this situation. Dr. Patel makes a case for a paradigm shift in our approach to urban planning. The discussion unpacks the paradigm shift into several discrete aspects dealing with fundamental dysfunctions in the planning systems currently followed in most Indian cities. Each of these aspects will be elaborated in subsequent episodes of this series.

In 1992, the evolutionary psychologists Leda Cosmides and John Tooby predicted, "Just as one can now flip open Gray's Anatomy to any page and find an intricately detailed depiction of some part of our evolved species-typical morphology, we anticipate that in 50 or 100 years one will be able to pick up an equivalent reference work for psychology and find in it detailed information-processing descriptions of the multitude of evolved species-typical adaptations of the human mind...” Finding it unnecessary to wait until 2042 or 2092, Niruban Balachandran first proposed and published a classification table of human evolved psychological adaptations in 2011. He then teamed up with Daniel Glass in 2012 to co-found and co-publish a research paper announcing PsychTable.org, an open-science taxonomy devoted to uncovering the richness and complexity of our evolved human behavior. In addition to these two peer-reviewed research papers, Niruban and Daniel have also written a This View of Life article to accompany this podcast episode. The field of conservation was created to fight change: to prevent objects from becoming dusty, broken, or rusted. But fighting to keep cultural objects preserved creates a certain mindset — a mindset where it’s too easy to imagine objects and cultures in a state of stasis. Sanchita Balachandran, Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum, founded Untold Stories to change that mindset in the conservation profession. Through events at the annual meetings of the American Institute for Conservation, Untold Stories expands cultural heritage beyond preserving the objects we might find in a museum. In this episode, Balachandran talks about Untold Story’s 2019 event: Indigenous Futures and Collaborative Conservation, avoiding the savior mentality, and how the profession has changed since she was in school. This was an episode I was really excited about. I met Nim in Boston back in January 2019. He told me about what he was building, and I was instantly pumped about it. He founded CloudTax, which is a tax filing service that helps Canadians easily file their taxes online for free. The reason i was excited to speak to Nim is because tax and accounting have always been close to me. I got my BCom in accounting and finance, and one of my side hustles back in the day was filing taxes for my classmates, so this was a really fun and nostalgic episode for me especially.Nim was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Canada shortly after the tsunami in 2004. He worked with the CRA for a couple of years, and had some experience at Sunlife as a financial advisor. He eventually circled back to his original passion which was taxes, and that’s how CloudTax was formed. We’re talking about how he built the initial product, how he funded the development, getting certified by the CRA, and eventually launching the business. This past year was CloudTax's first filing season, and was a huge success. Several thousand Canadians across all provinces filed their taxes with CloudTax.This was a great episode that I’m excited to share, so I hope you enjoy!PS. This is a new series that we are trying to start on my channel/podcast, which will be called “RoundTable”, and where we will be having conversations with people involving the theoretical foundations of PsychTable, including people that are working on different Evolved Psychological Adaptations (EPAs). In this first episode, we talk about what PsychTable is about, and how it will be built. We discuss the criteria used to classify something as an EPA; the kinds of EPAs that would be considered (including cultural and group-level EPAs); who would be able to access it, and how the evidence would be weighted; and who would benefit from it, and in what ways. We also talk a bit about the relationship between psychological adaptations and mental modules. -- Follow their work: Dan and Niruban's personal info: http://bit.ly/2M2meSr PsychTable: https://www.psychtable.org/ Support PsychTable (GoFundMe): http://bit.ly/33fvKqB -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, JOHN CONNORS, ADAM KESSEL, AND VEGA GIDEY! Marketing and communications are all about change. Whether it's changing the perception of a brand in the marketplace; changing the value of a sales pipeline; or in the case of Girish and his clients, driving change in the behaviours of society. You read that right. Balachandran, who I worked with at large agencies in London, has moved to India and set up an agency that uses the skills he gained in blue-chip marketing and communications programmes to deliver positive change in society. In this episode, we talk about some of the projects he's been involved in such as working with Sesame Street to address the growing problem of childhood obesity in India. We look at his work with CocaCola, Cisco, The Gates Foundation and a host of Indian start-ups too. We also explore what it's been like for Girish to set up a brand new agency. The challenges of running a small shop, versus his background working for agencies owned by the big holding companies. Finally, we look at the media landscape in India and how that compares to the UK. It's a massive country with a complex media landscape, so there are some insights useful for anyone thinking of working in the subcontinent. Sanchita Balachandran, Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum, hopes to see the field of conservation develop into more of a social process, rather than simply a technical one. From her 2016 talk at the American Institute for Conservation’s Annual Meeting, to teaching her students how to interrogate an object in person, to her Untold Stories project, Balachandran has thought critically about the role of conservators. In this epsiode, Balachandran talks about her early formative experiences in the field of conservation and how whether or not someone’s history is worth preserving is a deeply political decision. The gene encoding glycoprotein B (gB) of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) strain Smith was identified, sequenced, and expressed by recombinant vaccinia virus. The gB gene was found adjacent to the polymerase gene, as it is in the genome of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). The open reading frame consists of 2,784 nucleotides capable of encoding a protein of 928 amino acids. Comparison with gB homologs of other herpesviruses revealed a high degree of homology. The similarity between the MCMV gB and the HCMV gB is most prominent, since 45% of the amino acids are identical. In addition, all cysteine residues are at homologous positions, indicating a similar tertiary structure of the two proteins. In contrast to HCMV, the MCMV gB mRNA is a true late transcript. A recombinant vaccinia virus expressing the MCMV gB gene has been constructed (Vac-gB). Antibodies raised against the Vac-gB recombinant precipitated proteins of 130, 105, and 52 kDa from MCMV-infected cells. The identity of the MCMV gB with the major envelope glycoprotein of MCMV described by Loh et al. was shown (L. C. Loh, N. Balachandran, and L. F. Qualtiere, Virology 166:206-216, 1988). Immunization of mice with the Vac-gB recombinant gave rise to neutralizing antibodies.
In this episode, Lindsey and Ali interview Dr. Jyoti Gulati Balachandran, Assistant Professor of History at Penn State, about her book [Narrative Pasts: The Making of a Muslim Community in Gujarat, c. 1400-1650](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/narrative-pasts-9780190123994?cc=us&lang=en) (Oxford University Press, July 2020) The Gujarat region of western India has a long role as a maritime and commercial center in the Indian Ocean, but the rich history of its Muslim community - and the important role of Sufis in developing Gujarat's identity as a distinct region - has been overlooked.
