We're back with Kate (@katherinehere) to talk about her annual birthday trip. Destination? Madeira. This time, we made it out with both ankles intact (check out our Costa Rica episode if you want to know more). In this episode, Kate and I do a classic jam-packed itinerary through Lisbon, Sintra, and of course, the island of Madeira. Known as the Hawaii of Europe and the Island of Eternal Spring, we make the most of what this lush, volcanic island has to offer. Hikes, off-roading, even toboggan racing? And we bookend our time on the island in the vibrant city of Lisbon. Kate went on a mission to find the best Pasteis de Nata and we saw some interesting (read: nude) performance art during dinner. As always, nothing is what we expected. If you hear the term "CEL-24" and the first thing you think of is prison, and not a sake yeast, I don't think anyone would blame you.  But today we're here to spread the word on CEL-24 sake yeast and it's role in bringing us some of the most fruit-driven sake aromas on the planet.  Developed in Kochi prefecture in the 90's, CEL-24 was a response to the market demands for more aromatic and fruity sake styles. And after tasting a CEL-24 sake for ourselves, we can say that the apple, pineapple and other fruit aromas are strong and powerful as promised.  Yeast can have a big impact on a sake's aromatics and CEL-24 yeast really shows this to be true. Join us as we explore the world of sake yeast and perhaps push the boundary of how fruity a sake can be! #SakeRevolutionSupport the show

In today's Stoic Flow Thursday, we dive into the profound meditation by Marcus Aurelius on maintaining a pure, resilient mind. We'll unpack the metaphor of the mind as an untainted spring, and explore how to remain 'decent' amidst life's mud and dung. Key takeaways focus on self-freedom, integrity, and the Stoic approach to external opinions. Key Takeaways: ✅ Embrace your inner spring – Keep your mind untainted by external negativity. ✅ Freedom and decency – Anchor yourself with these virtues to maintain mental clarity. ✅ Indifference to applause – Seek internal validation rather than external praise. ✅ The mind's power – Cultivate mental strength to remain unaffected by wickedness.

Join me for an exciting new episode of Growing With Proficiency The Podcast that will make you want to dance – not just on the dance floor, but in your mind too! Have you ever pondered over the question,  “¿Quieres bailar conmigo?” "Do you want to dance with me?" It's more than a simple inquiry; it's a gateway to a world of emotions, experiences, and traditional roles on the dance floor. Tune in as my good friend and colleague, Abelardo Almazán-Vázquez, joins me to talk about this simple question and how in his classes this question has become a springboard to create vulnerable and powerful conversations around gender, consent, respect, and with the magic of comprehensible input, establish a safe and affirming space for everyone. Think about it – the times you've asked or been asked this question – the nervous excitement that may have accompanied it. But wait, don't just think about dancing; let's extend that reflection to the perspective and traditions behind this common practice. Who asked the question? Who is been asked? Why?As you can see, our conversation isn't just about dancing; it's a journey that touches upon themes of consent, identity, roles,  and inclusion. Abelardo's voice resonates with tolerance, compassion, and a thoughtful approach to push our conversations inside our classes beyond the obvious practice.  Let's explore how these seemingly simple conversations about dance can open doors to meaningful discussions in our classrooms and reflect and question some of our own practices.  Are you ready? Join us by simply clicking the link below to play the episode. ETERNAL SPRING documents the story behind the nationwide crack down of a spiritual group and the incident that brought down the wrath of the Chinese government. In March 2002, a state TV signal in China was hijacked by members of the banned spiritual group Falun Gong. Their goal is to counter the government narrative about their practice. In the aftermath, police raids sweep Changchun City, and comic book illustrator Daxiong (Justice League, Star Wars), a Falun Gong practitioner, is forced to flee. He arrives in North America, blaming the hijacking for worsening a violent repression. But his views are challenged when he meets the lone surviving participant to have escaped China, now living in Seoul, South Korea. Combining present-day footage with 3D animation inspired by Daxiong's art, Eternal Spring retraces the event on its 20th anniversary, and brings to life an unprecedented story of defiance, harrowing eyewitness accounts of persecution, and an exhilarating tale of determination to speak up for political and religious freedoms, no matter the cost. Director Jason Loftus (Ask Know Questions) joins us for a conversation on the history and the suppression of Falun Gong, how the group of members came together, working with Daxiong and the current political climate in China and his continuing work to uncover the repressive actions of that government through his films. On today's episode, I'm joined by Jason Loftus, filmmaker and director of Eternal Spring (2022). Eternal Spring is a documentary that shows the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, who have been targeted by the Communist Chinese Party for their belief systems. When Falun Gong was first introduced to China in the 1990s, it quickly gained popularity among Chinese citizens who were looking for a way to improve their health and spiritual well-being. By 1999, there were a reported 70 million practicing Falun Gong members in China. That same year, however, the Chinese Communist Party outlawed the practice of Falun Gong altogether and began a brutal campaign against its practitioners. Today, we discuss the Falun Gong's fight against Chinese Communist Party propaganda and persecution, as we dig into the story of a group of heroes who sought to highjack the CCP corporate television broadcasts in 2002. When you need to make a story stick....it's important to think outside the box....On this episode we are diving head first into a real and important story which has been presented in an incredibly vibrant way.  The film is 'Eternal Spring'.In March 2002, a state TV station in China was hijacked by members of outlawed spiritual group Falun Gong. Their goal was to counter the government narrative about their practice. In the aftermath, police raids sweep Changchun City, and comic book illustrator Daxiong, a Falun Gong practitioner, is forced to flee. He arrives in North America, blaming the hijacking for worsening a violent repression. But his views are challenged when he meets the lone surviving participant to have escaped China, now living in Seoul, South Korea. Do you want to learn how to stand up paddleboard in Lake Atitlan Guatemala? I had the chance to interview Marshall, a Canadian expat who currently lives in Atitlan with his wife Annette. He's a big fan of Latin American food and says that the weather is perfect year-round. Listen to my interview with https://arewehomeyetpodcast.com/welcome-to-the-are-we-home-yet-podcast/ (Are we home yet? podcast )episode 29 guest, Marshall, about fully enjoying expat life in Lake Atitlan Guatemala and running a Stand Up Paddleboard business. Guatemala is a fascinating country to live in, both for its weather and its culture. The country has a thriving Aboriginal culture, and it is interesting to see how the indigenous people of Guatemala are still living in their ancestral ways. Living among their culture is quite an experience, and it is also fascinating to watch as they interact with the modern world. From a weather perspective, Guatemala is just a fantastic place to live, it's called the land of Eternal Spring. The climate is perfect for those who love the outdoors, and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or simply spending time in nature, you'll find that Guatemala has something to offer. In addition to its great weather, Guatemala also boasts a rich cultural heritage. If you're interested in learning about the country's history and customs, you'll be sure to find plenty of opportunities to do so. Whether you're looking for an adventure-filled vacation or a peaceful place to call home, Guatemala is sure to please. One of the most notable features of Guatemala is Lake Atitlan, a large lake in the southwestern part of the country. Lake Atitlan Guatemala was once voted one of the "Most Beautiful Lake in the world." It is located in the Highlands of Guatemala, nestled amid mountains and volcanoes, and lush vegetation. Visitors to Lake Atitlan Guatemala can enjoy the stunning scenery, relax in the peaceful atmosphere, and explore the rich culture of the local people. Every year thousands of people come to experience its beauty for themselves. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is more than three miles long and up to a mile wide, with depths reaching over 1,000 feet and incredibly clear. Its shores are dotted with small villages, and its waters are home to many different kinds of fish. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is also a popular spot for kayaking, fishing, hiking, swimming, and thanks to Marshall, stand up paddleboarding, through his company Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Atitlan. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. But it's not just the scenery that makes the beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala special. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including rare species of fish, birds, and reptiles. In addition, the lake is an important cultural center for the Maya people. For centuries, the Maya have been drawn to Lake Atitlan for its spiritual power. Even today, many Maya pilgrims make the journey to the lake to offer prayers and sacrifices to the Gods. With its natural beauty and rich history, it's no wonder that the beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala is considered one of the seven wonders of Guatemala. https://arewehomeyetpodcast.com/standup-paddleboard-lake-atitlan-guatemala/ (If you want to know more insider knowledge about living in Lake Atitlan Guatemala and stand up paddleboarding, click this link to tune in to episode 29 of the Are We Home Yet podcast and hear more from Marshall!) https://are-we-home-yet.captivate.fm/listen (Subscribe, Download, Share, Rate, Review the podcast!) "Eternal Spring" is a stellar documentary, revisiting, on its 20th anniversary, the March 2002 hijacking of Chinese national TV in the city of Chungchun by Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong, a religion which spins off of Buddhist tradition, garnered a wealth of support in the '90s, and when its membership grew large, became a threat to the government's cultural control. As a result, Falun Gong was banned and its practitioners made pariah. Protests ended in beatings, deaths, you name it. Some practitioners, such as Daxiong, the Canadian comic book artist whose work fills this movie, fled their homes to avoid persecution. 20 years later, Daxiong works with the one remaining member of the TV station hijacking to build an animated portrait of that time. It's simultaneously a heist film and plea for religious freedom expressed through beautifully crafted, sometimes even breathtaking, art.

This episode of BTL Radio Show we help kick off Dances With Films film festival with filmmakers JASON LOFTUS talking ETERNAL SPRING and JENNY WALDO who talks about her feature film debut with ACID TEST, both with films at DWF. First up take a listen to first-time feature filmmaker JENNY WALDO talking about ACID TEST, making its West Coast Premiere at DWF. Knowing she wouldn't be available to join us live on the show, Jenny and I did a prerecorded interview talking about ACID TEST. Somewhat autobiographical in nature, ACID TEST is set in 1992 during the Bush-Clinton-Perot election cycle and focuses on high school senior Jenny who is trying to find herself while trying to survive in her dysfunctional family with a father with anger issues. Rebelling through music, dress, and deeds, including dropping acid in front of her parents, this journey of self-discovery is not only engaging and entertaining, but is beautiful to watch. Jenny goes in-depth about the visuals and their purposeful design, the story, the Riot Grrrl music, the hair-pulling editing process, and more. A beyond auspicious feature debut by JENNY WALDO. Then documentarian JASON LOFTUS is on hand talking about his latest film, the acclaimed, ETERNAL SPRING. A powerful look at events surrounding the 2002 hijacking of state-run television in Changchun City, China by activist believers in the Fulan Gong religion. Joining forces with renowned illustrator and comic artist Daxiong, Jason melds animation, archival footage, and current interviews with those survivors who were involved in the TV hijacking for a compelling look at history, the Chinese government, Fulan Gong, and more. Daxiong, who grew up in Changchun, fled the city when the government cracked down on the Fulan Gong believers with brutality, violence, and sentencing to forced labor camps. Using his talents as an illustrator, he brings this story to life with pen, ink, and watercolors remembering the brave, the beauty and peace that once was, and the darkness of oppression. A fascinating conversation with Jason diving into the meld of live-action interviews with Daxiong's illustrations and the process of turning those into 3D animation, the animation team, Jason's own relationship with China and its culture, and so much more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

“Most people do know that they cannot trust the state narrative. But the problem is: what can you trust? And what can you not trust? How far does the propaganda go?” At a time of ubiquitous lies, when telling the truth can cost you your life, is it worth it? I sit down with Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Jason Loftus, director of the new animated documentary “Eternal Spring,” the story of a group that managed the unimaginable—to hijack China's state TV airwaves. “It was unprecedented in Chinese history for any group to have any intervention in the monopoly of control of media and television inside China,” Loftus says. Fernando Arias is the Director of Sustainability at Clark Construction Group. The firm has been named as one of the greenest contractors in the US, with a tremendous amount of completed LEED projects. In today's episode, Fernando shares with Charlie Cichetti the story of his colorful childhood that helped shape the sustainability-minded professional that he is now. A Child of Nature Colombia-born, Fernando was surrounded by the fertile land of the City of Eternal Spring. Coffee plantations, flower farms, and a variety of butterflies are among his earliest childhood memories prior to his family's big move to New York. “I've always been immersed and impressed by the abundance of natural and urban ecologies and I learned to respect the natural environment very much.” - Fernando Arias His first interests involved tinkering with toys and their machineries, eventually leading him to become part of the military as a tech mechanic, but his career track was never a linear path. Over time, he switched gears.   The Greatest Influencer It was when he moved to San Francisco that he met the person who enabled him to change paths. With his talent in collage and 3D art, Fernando was steered into thinking about taking up architecture classes. Fernando's interest in the physics of buildings grew into a fascination with how forces and nature affect the form of buildings. He went abroad and got more immersed in the landscape environment.   Integrating Nature in Design A few years down the road, he furthered his studies at Columbia University. Fernando came to a deeper understanding of how various factors come into play to meet the green standards of the built environment. “Thinking about urban systems was not just merely about ways to transportation or energy. It was also about public health and economic drivers in cities and how all of these things work together to prepare cities for challenges.” - Fernando Arias To hear more about Fernando's many realizations and the evolution of his career as a LEED specialist, download and listen to the episode!   Learn more about Fernand Arias: Connect with him on LinkedIn Follow him on Twitter   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES: Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram   Don't forget to leave a positive rating and review on iTunes if you truly enjoyed the show.
