At just 15 years old, Archie Veal's life took an unexpected turn. An active teenager from the Isle of Man, he initially dismissed his worsening back pain as a minor injury. However, within days, his condition deteriorated rapidly. By the time he arrived at A&E, doctors were struggling to identify the cause of his pain.A crucial MRI scan revealed that Archie was suffering from Staphylococcus aureus Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)-positive septicemia, a severe and life-threatening infection. His organs were shutting down, his lungs had collapsed, and his kidneys had failed. His condition was so critical that the Isle of Man's medical facilities could not provide the intensive treatment he needed.Placed in a medically induced coma upon arrival at Alder Hey, Archie spent 37 days in intensive care, relying on ventilators and dialysis to keep him alive. When Archie awoke, weeks after being sedated, he was unable to speak due to a tracheostomy. He had lost a significant amount of weight and was completely reliant on his medical team and family for care. With unwavering determination, he gradually regained strength. Physiotherapists worked tirelessly to restore his mobility, with Archie eventually learning to walk again. After nearly five months in hospital, he was finally discharged just in time for his 16th birthday. To mark the 10-year anniversary of his treatment, Archie set out to raise £10,000 for Alder Hey through a series of fundraising challenges called “10 in 10.” His efforts have already surpassed expectations, raising over £15,000 through endurance events, including canoeing 68km, cycling 124 miles, and competing in national wheelchair sports championships. Now 26, Archie sits down with Cath and Adam as our next inspiring voice as he recounts his Alder Hey story and encourages people to get involved with fundraising and to make a difference. Episodes on Inspired Voices may contain brief details of medical procedures.Support the show

A lot of young people go through their 20s struggling with their relationships and making a lot of mistakes they regret later on in life. But it doesn't have to be that way.Join us for this week's episode where Josh Birch shares his story of struggling with relationships in his 20s to having an encounter with the Holy Spirit to finding his happily ever after! Here's a summary of this week's story:Josh grew up in a Christian household and attended church, but he fell away from God during his teenage years. He didn't have a relationship with God because he never realized the significance of what it meant for him on a day-to-day basis.Josh talks about how he broke up with his girlfriend and travelled to Southeast Asia where one night when he was in a state of anger, hate, and pain, he decided to pray. As soon as he did, he felt an overwhelming sense of peace come over him. He attributes this experience to the beginning of his personal relationship with God.While working as a physiotherapist at Alder Hey, he started attending church regularly. He faced challenges when he tried to balance his old life with his new faith, but ultimately decided to be honest with his friends and continue living in the real world as a salt and light. He was voted captain of his cricket team and used this position to change the culture of the team for the better.Josh met Alice when she moved in with the Birch family as a lodger, and they quickly became friends. Over the course of four years, they remained close friends while dating other people; however, at the end of those four years, Josh realized that Alice met every single criterion on his list for what he was looking for in a wife. After returning from a trip to France, he asked her to marry him.Josh and Alice have been married nearly 7 years and have two kids. Their younger daughter, Ada, was born with a congenital heart defect and down's syndrome. He talks about how their relationship with God and the love and support of the church community helped them through their hard times.Josh says that it is important to focus on what you know to be true and not try to do things by yourself. It is crucial to be in community and to speak out in difficult times and seek help.ABOUT JOSH:Josh is a husband, and father to two beautiful kids and works as a physiotherapist at Alder Hey hospital. He is an avid cricketer and a big fan of the Liverpool Football Club.

Michael West is Professor in organisational effectiveness and innovation, Lancaster University and Visiting Fellow to the King's Fund, the NHS Think Tank. He is a former Executive Dean of Aston Business School. This is Chris Whitehead's second interview with Michael. If you want some background, please listen to episode 13 of the Compassionate Leadership Interview. In this present episode we are going to focus on Michael's lockdown project, the book Compassionate Leadership: Sustaining Wisdom, Humanity and Presence in Health and Social Care. Michael's interest in compassion stems from his meditation practice, which has brought him into contact with world religions for which compassion is fundamental. At the same time, his research and consultancy work on leadership and culture, in industry and the NHS, highlighted the importance of positivity and relationships in teams and organisations to effectiveness, creativity, and innovation. The pandemic created a space for Michael in which he could bring together research evidence, case studies, and practical approaches to compassionate leadership. The book was supported by Health Education and Improvement Wales, which has a 10-year strategy to implement compassionate leadership. Organisational culture is a recurring theme in the book. Michael characterises a culture of compassion as one in which people are present with each other, there's a strong emphasis on relationships, and there is a strong ethic of caring and support for people who are experiencing challenge or difficulty. Michael believes there has been a “sea change” over the past two years in the leadership approach adopted by the NHS. And this applies to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in particular. In England compassionate leadership is part of the NHS People Plan, but practice is less consistent. Coaching and mentoring receive numerous mentions in Michael's book. Coaching and mentoring are about being present, attending to the other, listening with fascination, helping them to articulate their thoughts, explore challenges, and be comfortable with ambiguity. Therefore coaching and mentoring formalise some of the behaviours of compassionate leadership. In the book Michael says “experiencing compassion for others shapes individuals' appraisals about themselves.” He believes when we experience an interaction with another who is truly present with us, it enables us to be more present with ourselves. He says “it's a myth that performance cannot be managed with compassion.” Michael believes that compassionate leadership actually enables a stronger emphasis on performance, because out of compassion comes a motivation for delivering high quality continually improving care. And it gives us the skills we need to listen to people and understand what is at the root of unsatisfactory performance. Michael's previous book was entitled ‘Effective Teamwork' and this latest book is informed in part by that one. He uses the expression ‘real teams' to refer to teams that have a clear purpose, shared goals, and take time out to reflect on their effectiveness. Michael believes that compassionate leadership can help avoid scandals such as Mid Staffs, Bristol, and Alder Hey. The research he and colleagues conducted following Mid Staffs, revealed that in the Trusts that were less effective, senior leaders tended to be focused on managing upwards and ‘comfort eeking' in their discussions with staff. In the highest performing organisations, leaders were focused on their vision for the Trust, and intent on ‘problem sensing' in their staff interactions. Michael contends that compassionate leadership is one of the keys to innovation, because it creates a psychologically safe environment, and that in turn enables the risk taking associated with innovation. This year NHS Wales published their Compassionate Leadership Principles which they co-created with Michael. NHS Scotland has a programme called Project Lift...

330,000 children and young people are treated at Alder Hey each year but we have just a handful of rooms kitted out with the latest distraction technology allowing us to use an immersive person-centred approach to improve the well-being and comfort of patients.Distraction technology – the use of 4D immersive projection, lighting effects and surround sound - is proven to reduce the use of sedation by 40%, meaning children are not exposed to unnecessary medicine and staff can see and treat more children. Alder Hey Children's Charity thinks hospital staff should be able to use this technology with all of our young patients and so we raise funds to enable this. +It’s been an eventful week. Barbara Bush, the wife of our 41st president went home on April 17th and her funeral was held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston on April 21st.[1]  First families from the Clintons on attended to show their respect and demonstrate that a person is not defined solely by their political affiliation.  Across the pond, two other momentous occasions occurred.  Prince William and Kate welcomed their third child and second son, Prince Louis.[2]  In contrast to this joyous occasion, a battle was being waged over the life of another little one, Alfie Evans.[3] Before we discuss baby Alfie, let’s return to Barbara Bush.  Millenials will not remember her time as First Lady, but she was known as gracious and welcoming.  A friend of public education, she made literacy her cause while in the White House.  After leaving the White House, she and Bush Sr. spent much of their time in Houston and after she passed, many local residents shared fond memories of interacting with her.  She was friendly to everyone and loved kids. Sixty-Five Years Ago in Midland, Texas The part of her life that wasn’t often discussed in the many years she was in her public eye was not her famous sons, but the daughter that they lost.   When their daughter, Robin, was only three years old . . . Not much older than Alfie Evans . . . She began feeling tired and did not want to go out and play.[4]  Concerned, Barbara took her to the doctor and the diagnosis came back.  It was a strange disease called Leukemia, one that not was much known about and for which there was no cure.  The doctor told the Bushes, “There is nothing that can be done, just take her home to die quietly.” Today in Liverpool, England Today in England, there is a battle waging over a little one named Alfie Evans.  Alfie’s parents took him to the doctor sixteen months ago after suffering seizures.  The doctors have not been able to diagnose the cause.[5]  He had been in the care of Alder Hey Hospital during that time and the issue is the doctors have told the parents that there is nothing more that they can do for him; however, they refused to allow the parents to take Alfie to any other provider. Alder Hey told the Evans the same thing doctors told the Bushes about their daughter, Robin, “There is nothing more we can do, make her comfortable, and take her home to die.” The Fighting Spirit Like the Evans, Ms.
