For this episode, I have a chat with Singer Songwriter, Jack Droppers. Jack has been in a band with his best friends for almost a decade, and he wouldn't want it any other way. I loved where this conversation went. From sharing our mutual connection to Orlando, to finding the hidden little things that we incorporate into our work, and also celebrating the fun and quirky methods that we have in order to chase down that great idea.Jack has really great insights when it comes to creative work. His music is really in touch with his personal memories and emotions, and also inspires listeners to ultimately celebrate life despite all of its imperfections. He understands the value of art, and also has a deep desire in expressing that the act of creating is just as important as the finished product.I can't help but to smile when thinking about how serendipitous this conversation was. To start the chat with me sharing a childhood photo wearing an Orlando Magic jersey (well before I've ever lived in Orlando), to learning how big of a basketball fan Jack is, particularly the Orlando Magic, and to top it off, the conversation about creativity was focused on finding the little MAGICAL moments to incorporate into our art. I mean, cmon! The band Jack Droppers and the Best Intentions is in the process of writing and recording their next album. Their latest album "Scooter" won the WYCE "Alternative Album of the Year" in 2024 and "Dad Rock" won the WYCE "Rock Album of the Year" in 2023Enjoy!About this Podcast : Craft Talk is a collection of interviews with people of different disciplines ranging from creativity, business, and lifestyle. Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeIn just seven years since meeting based on a recommendation, Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada formed the Black Pumas, released two albums, and have already been nominated for seven Grammys. However, this fruitful friendship was almost never developed.Quesada was enrolled at the University of Texas but flunking out due to his dedication to guitar over textbooks. His parents gave him a proposition: Either stay home in Laredo, or return to Austin without a guitar in hand to focus on studying. He went with option B and headed back for school in Austin—or so his parents thought. Quesada took his remaining book money (about $200) and headed to Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas, where he snagged a Squier Telecaster Thinline. His parents eventually figured out the switcheroo, but Quesada was determined and hasn't looked back. (Side note: The family obviously sees and supports his musical talents, and attended Black Pumas' Ryman show the night before the filming of this Rig Rundown.) That matador move pulled off by Quesada allowed him to become a longtime fixture in the Austin music scene with bands Brownout, Ocote Soul Sound, Spanish Gold, Echocentrics, and Grupo Fantasma (with whom he played for over 15 years, earning a 2011 Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album). He started to explore new ideas that didn't fit the mold for Grupo, and needed someone to narrate his musical vistas. A friend recommended he link up with Austin newcomer Eric Burton, who traded his busking spot on the Santa Monica pier for the bright lights of Sixth Street. The duo met up, and as the results prove, the rest is history. Before the Black Pumas' second headlining show at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville, bandleader Adrian Quesada, bassist Brendan Bond, and band tech Bryan Wilkinson invited PG's Chris Kies into the hallowed grounds for a chill conversation about their tonal tools. During our time with the Black Pumas, we learned about Quesada's love for tremolo (he even included it as a secret weapon in a semi-hollow Jazzmaster), Bond's fateful trip to the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and why a '59 ES-125 is Wilkinson's perfect pairing with Burton's expressive and emotive voice.Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr & https://ddari.io/xpnd.rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 20240:00 - D'Addario XPND Pedalboard0:15 - Chris Kies Intro1:57 - Adrian Quesada Intro3:15 - Touring with Vintage Gear4:02 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Telecaster6:13 - Playing with Fingers or Pick8:03 - College or Guitar?9:14 - Adrian Quesada's Strings10:00 - Adrian Quesada's Gibson ES-34511:53 - Playing ES-345 with DI Fuzz13:11 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster Thinline14:27 - Built-in Tremolo17:33 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Limited Edition '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb18:36 - Adrian Quesada's Pedalboard30:05 - D'Addario XPND & John Bohlinger30:55 - Brendan Bond Intro31:49 - Brendan Bond's 1974 Fender P Bass36:15 - Brendan Bond Fingerstyle & Bass...

Featuring Thomson on lead vocals & guitars, he's joined by his pals the Driftless Revelers (Ben Nelson, Jerod Kaszynski, Matt Sayles), as well as Mark Johnson on Accordion, and Dawson Redenius (of Good Morning Bedlam) on trumpet.   Here's a link to more info on Wyatt: https://www.philvillerecords.com/wyattthomson   Cookies & Crème "Deck The Halls" With the twist on the classic “Deck the Halls” we threw as many Christmas references as possible in our verses while keeping the song clean and “kid friendly”    The Periodicals: "Highwater or Hell"  written and performed by The Periodicals. We just recently released our 6 track Christmas EP- A Christmas Weekend Picnic.  Chainsaw Curtis: "Just Not X-mas (Without You)"  Clueless protagonist's wife splits with the kid just before the holidays. He manages to get hammered on rum . He ponders the futility of putting up decorations and getting in the car to look for them during the snowstorm. My stage persona, Chainsaw Curtis, did his first nightclub gig in upstate NY in 1970. He was co-owner of the Silver Moon Blues Oasis in Darien from 1989 to 1993 and continues to play blues, R&B, R'n'R and original music all over Wisconsin and Northern Illinois with The Creeper Dustin Warbear - Grinch This is a Christmas song from the perspective of the Grinch, but more of an R rated Grinch than the normal movie one. Not your typical Christmas music  Tyler Sjostrom "How's the Weather Where You Are" for consideration for your holiday music showcase. A little background - I grew up with big family Christmasses in North Dakota, but as everyone's grown and moved away, we don't see each other at the holidays anymore. So that's what this song is about - missing those days (and seeing a familiar joy in my kids and nieces/nephews), but hoping we can all get together again if the stars align just right. Enjoy  Barbara Ann: "Country Christmas" This energetic holiday jingle will have you feeling ready for a sleigh ride through the countryside this Christmas season Xposed 4Heads: "Dance with the Krampus" & "Sleigh Ride" From Milwaukee, is a legendary fun rock band that gets played on SiriusXM, Dr. Demento and has headlined DEVO's annual fan fest.     Dance with the Krampus is a song about the Germanic folk legend of a half goat, half demon that punishes the bad children on the same night that St. Nick gives gifts to the good children. The Jerks: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" & "Winter WOnderland" A punk spin on a Christmas classic with a deceiving a capella introduction.    Winter Wonderland A call-and-response twist on a traditional holiday song, featuring spouses on background vocals. Rumor has it The Jerks may work on some new original songs soon. :)  Michael Legut: "A Cowboy Christmas" Michael is a Singer/Songwriter with a flair for unusual and mindful songs.   This song is written for all the cowboys and cowgirls who may have to work at the job over the Christmas holiday. Dick Elliot: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" & "O Holy Night" You could say that Dick Eliot had an Epiphany of sorts when it came to selecting the songs and subject matter for his latest album: “O Holy Night!” “I wanted to record a Christmas album,” Dick said. He wanted to pay homage to his deep and abiding faith. This is nothing new. There has been a spiritual connection of some kind in all of Dick's recordings. “This one's for Mom,” Dick said. “I titled it O Holy Night.” That was her favorite Christmas Carol. Alvvays is from Toronto. Their first album came out in 2014, and they've put out two other albums since then. In Canada, they've won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and all three of their albums have been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. Their first song was also one of their biggest hits. It's called "Archie, Marry Me." Rolling Stone and Stereogum named it one of the best songs of the last decade. So for this episode, I talked about it with Molly Rankin and Alec O'Hanley from the band. The two of them are pretty quiet about their relationship other than being bandmates, but they told me a lot about the song, which I would count nowadays as an indie rock classic. We had the pleasure of interviewing Begonia over Zoom video!Powder Blue, the highly anticipated new album from Begonia—the solo project of alt-pop Canadian artist Alexa Dirks—is out now on Birthday Cake Records. The album was written and produced by Begonia, Matt Peters and Matthew Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) with contributions from Jason Agel (Björk, Kelly Clarkson, Prince) and Joe LaPorta (FKA twigs, beabadoobee, Solange). The new collection of songs wrestles with life's thornier moments in more evocative ways. When describing the namesake behind the new album, Powder Blue, Begonia turns to vivid imagery: her baby blanket, the airiness of clouds on a summer day, chlorine-filled water in a hotel pool, circa-1970s Elvis Presley wearing an ill-fitting jumpsuit and her collection of faded denim jackets.Ahead of the project, Begonia shared album singles “Married By Elvis,” “Cold Night” and “Right Here” which received critical acclaim from CBC, Wonderland, Line of Best Fit, Indie88, Daily Star and Globe & Mail.In celebration of the new album, Begonia is set for a run of U.S. shows in select cities this spring. The dates include a performance at New York's Mercury Lounge as well as further shows at Los Angeles' Hotel Cafe, Nashville's The Basement, Portland's Hawthorne Lounge and Seattle's Sunset Tavern. More dates to be announced soon.Powder Blue follows Begonia's 2017 EP Lady In Mind and debut album Fear, released in 2019 to widespread critical praise. Fear received a nomination for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and also earned Begonia a nod for Polaris Music Prize. As Begonia, Alexa Dirks creates bold, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. In her music, Begonia leans hard into a sense of arrival. Whether it's learning to come into her own or processing a brutal heartbreak, Dirks' intimate lyrics and audacious sound allows for her audience to relate to the messiness of life with an honesty that is refreshing. Despite the turmoil from which it emerged, Powder Blue represents Dirks feeling settled by coming to terms with her past and present—from religious conflict to exploring sexuality and managing mental health, the new album finds Dirks wrestling with life's thornier moments in more evocative ways.We want to hear from you! Molly Rankin, Tracyanne Campbell, Mac DeMarco and Molly Nilsson talk about whether or not you need to be social to make your best work, whether you're a creative fox or a hedgehog, and how much of yourself to expose in your work. Molly Rankin grew up in a musical family on the remote island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father was a professional folk musician, and she started writing music with her neighbour Kerri MacLellan as a teenager, before forming Alvvays in 2011. They won the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year in 2018, and last October released their third album Blue Rev. Tracyanne Campbell is a singer from Glasgow who formed the band Camera Obscura in 1996. Their first album was released in 2001 and was produced by Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian. His latest album, Five Easy Hot Dogs, came out earlier this year and was recorded during a road trip from Los Angeles to New York. Berlin-by-way-of-Sweden synth-pop singer Molly Nilsson produces and performs all her music solo, and is determined to find magic in the everyday. She released her tenth album, Extreme, last year.

Tokyo Police Club recently kicked off an eight week North American tour and are set to perform at this year’s JUNO Awards, where their four full-length album, "TPC," is up for "Alternative Album of the Year." Written over the course of 2017 in a church in remote rural Ontario, "TPC" marks a fresh beginning for a band who have been playing together since high school. Plugging in and playing for the sheer fun of it for the first time in years, the Ontario quartet discovered that the songs came easy, crackling with the raw energy of a band falling in love with music all over again.

Producer Kevin Dietz has once again offered his services to the winner of CBC Searchlight 2017, as part of our Canadian Musician Career Booster Prize Pack. Dietz is the head engineer at Mississauga's famed Metalworks Studios and worked with artists from Tom Cochrane and Randy Bachman to Alexisonfire and Silverchair. We'll talk about his work with last year's winner, Desiree Dawson, how artists can best prepare for a studio session, and more. Jerry Leger’s new album, Nonsense And Heartache, showcases a combination of primal rock and roll and raw, confessional balladry. The separation between the two is evident by the album’s title, and it is in fact two distinct collections of songs presented on two slabs of vinyl. In many ways, Leger’s artistic path has been leading up to this ambitious display of both sides of his musical personality, fueled by countless nights playing in Toronto bars with a loyal band equally committed to keeping rock and roll’s original flame burning. Apocalipstick is the follow up to The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer's 2014 release A Real Fine Mess, which received considerable recognition, including a Blues Album of the Year JUNO nod and win for the Blues Album of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year at the WCMAs. As the band explains, the new album came together "from the desire for companionship, the endless pursuit of tone, the strength and glue of family, and above all, the love and admiration for each other's skills." We'll unpack exactly what that means and what's to come for the duo.
