For the past few years, craft beer sales have declined across the US. To figure out why, Jimmy sat down with Kate Bernot, Missoula-based reporter on beer, alcohol, and food, and former director of the North American Guild of Beer Writers; and Zach Mack, food writer and owner of Alphabet City Beer Co. in NYC. The three talk about how craft lost its popularity, their own memories of craft beer, and how to bring it back in style. Read Kate's full article on the decline of draft beer here!

The Suwanee American Craft Beer Fest, rated as the No. 1 Beer Festival in America in 2022 by USA Today, took place in Suwanee Town Center Park with 5,000 tickets sold. Attendees sampled nearly 400 brews from 100 breweries, with nearly 80 Georgia breweries participating. The festival also featured live music, beer pong, miniature golf, giant Jenga, Peach State cornhole, and axe-throwing. The Razzmanian Devil, a raspberry passion fruit sour brewed by Liquid Nation Brewing, won the best beer trophy in the Georgia Brew Battle. The festival was a success for vendors and attendees alike, with many looking forward to returning next year. Plus, MDJ and Times-Journal, Inc. Sugar Hill has opened its 9.2-acre Gold Mine Park, which preserves the entrance to what was once one of more than a dozen gold mines in the area while also adding a new leg to the Sugar Hill Greenway. The park is part of a 16.5-mile trail, with Gold Mine Park adding a piece that stretches from the park's entrance on Level Creek Road to Whitehead Road. With the opening of this leg, Sugar Hill has completed five miles of its greenway trail, constituting the first phase of the trail. The greenway provides an excellent opportunity for the community to explore nature and engage in physical activity. One of the nation's largest producers of podcast programming now calls Gwinnett County's Gas South District home. Business RadioX, which operates dozens of online radio studios across the U.S., has relocated its Gwinnett studio into the newly renovated Gas South Convention Center in Duluth. In addition to acquiring more broadcast space, the new studio will produce exclusive programming to promote news and upcoming events on the Gas South District campus, which includes the Gas South Arena, Gas South Convention Center, Gas South Theater, and the Hudgens Center for the Arts. Since opening its doors in 2012, the Gwinnett Business RadioX studio has interviewed more than 3,000 local business leaders while producing some of the network's most popular programming including the acclaimed “Celebrating Powerhouse Women” podcast series, the Gwinnett Chamber's “Voice of Business” podcast, and the studio's long-running award-winning signature show “Gwinnett Business Radio”.  A man from Duluth  was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his girlfriend at a restaurant in Marietta. According to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office, Jose Ramon Lemus shot his girlfriend, Janice Ross, in the neck after becoming angry at her for asking about another woman he had been communicating with. He then fled into the woods but was apprehended by police within an hour with the help of a police K-9. Ross died at the scene of the shooting. During the sentencing, the victim's family members spoke about the impact of losing her, with her 14-year-old daughter saying, "I won't ever get my mom back and it hurts." Atlanta's Chick-fil-A is planning a $1 billion expansion to open restaurants in Asia and Europe, with a goal to have a presence in five international markets by 2030. Despite being the third-largest fast-food chain in the US, with more than 2,700 restaurants, only a few of these are overseas. The move is aimed at testing how Chick-fil-A will perform in international markets to learn and innovate, according to CEO Andrew Cathy. Chick-fil-A has previously launched an expansion in South Africa that lasted five years, and in 2019 it opened but soon closed a London-area restaurant due to protests about anti-gay marriage statements made by Chick-Fil-A's former CEO. Gwinnett Technical College has experienced a surge in enrollment for the third consecutive semester, with a nearly 10% increase in enrollment numbers for the 2023 spring semester compared to last year. Gwinnett Tech's President, Glen Cannon, credits the increase to the opening of the new Emerging Technologies building and the renovation of other buildings, the Dual Enrollment programs for high school students, and the expansion of academic programs to feed high-demand careers. The enrollment growth indicates that Gwinnett Tech provides the skills needed in today's competitive job market and is on a growth trajectory for the future. It's that time of year again folks. If you're new to the show, every year, I get together with my friends from ABA Inside Track for a Year in Review show, and this year was no different. In this podcast, we went over a handful of happenings in the world of Applied Behavior Analysis.  In this episode, we covered: The changes in leadership of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and the Association for Professional Behavior Analysis. What shows from each of our pods resonated with our respective audiences. Whether West Coast or New England IPAs are best (c'mon, is this even worth talking about?), including an impromptu short history of American Craft Beer.  Other questions from the audience. The passings of Tameka Meadows, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff, David Jarmolowicz, and Dale Bretthower. With regard to the latter, I would like to say that I wish we had more time to elaborate on the contributions of these behavior analysts. We were pressed for time, not only for recording, but also in terms of show preparation, and I apologize if that segment of the show fails to live up to the standards you've come to expect from Behavioral Observations.  We also fielded a great question from long time listener, Penny Holloway. Again, time did not allow us to do her question justice, but if you listen to the very end of the show, I do my best to address it, and I hope you get a chance to check that out.  Huge thanks again for the ABA Inside Track crew, along with Alan Haberman for being such great conversational partners. I look forward to sharing more fun discussions with you in 2023 and beyond!!! Here are the links to some of the things we discussed: Inside JABA 13 (John Borrero and Linda LeBlanc). They believe in giving honest feedback, legitimate sales projections and partying like you love your job. They are beer nerds in a beer job and just listening to Chad's passion should inspire you to be better at what you do. Because I care about making you better in your career I asked Chad to talk to us about what his team looks for in a supplier partner and how you and your brewery can partner with them to tackle Southeast Asia. There's nothing quite like cracking open a cold one... We'll admit it...we don't need much of an excuse to crack open a cold beer. Finding that right one to hit your lips is just heaven, which is why it just made so much sense to sit down with writer/director Christo Brock about his new film 'Brewmance' which is on VOD platforms now. The American Craft Beer movement began with a group of restless homebrewers searching for something genuine and flavorful. Today it’s evolved into a redefinition of beer and an international cultural phenomenon. That uniquely American spirit of rebellion and innovation survives in two groups of homebrewers from Long Beach, California who are looking to open their own breweries and bring their beers to the world. These include a Christian father-son team who grew close over making beer and a retired rock star looking for the “quiet" existence of a brewery owner. With the insight and commentary of legendary brewers Ken Grossman (Sierra Nevada), Fritz Maytag (Anchor Brewing), Charlie Papazian, Vinnie Cilurzo (Russian River), Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Jim Koch (Boston Brewing) and others, 'Brewmance' reveals the soul of craft beer in the heart of America. However, I do boast a very fine cellar; not so much the contents (though I have a few Trappists I wouldn’t kick out of bed) but the structure itself, built by my husband Fran with his own fair hands. It was no small endeavour; he excavated it out of the raised ground at the back of our house creating a cavern that stays blessedly cool even in the hottest summer. The back wall forms a wine rack, while three massive stone slab shelves provide the ideal place for storing beer; I can keep fruit, veg and cheese out there, too. It even has a few obligatory spiders’ webs.Anyway, due to Lockdown our beer cellar was running low so my brave hunter/gatherer took his own fair hands on a beer hunt; naturally, I put a St Christopher round his neck, my lucky pebble in his pocket and made him chew a couple of raw garlic cloves before he left. Hunter/gatherer turned out to be the mot juste because he came back with several different ales, including two I’d not tried before, from award-winning Hunter’s Brewery at Bulleigh Barton Farm, Ipplepen, Devon – not a million miles from us. Apart from being a normal brewery, 60-barrel brew length with 4,000 gallon fermenting capacity, they have a dedicated conditioning room and can turn out 3,000 bottle-conditioned beers an hour. And, listen up, they bottle-condition all their beers – yes, all nine of them. I am seriously impressed, and place them carefully in my cellar to carry on conditioning. One of them is Half Bore, which the brewer describes as an amber coloured session ale (4.2 per cent ABV); rather intriguingly, the ingredients include both honey and golden syrup along with malted barley and wheat, suggested pairing bangers ‘n’ mash. But I thought that hint of sweetness might be just what I needed for a chicken and chestnut pie and so it proved though, sadly, when I carefully opened the (unshaken) bottle it spurted over my kitchen floor, so the glass I poured was less like amber nectar and more the colour of our famous Devon mud from the brewery farmyard… However, the flavour was there, rounded and nuanced, hops coming through on a lingering aftertaste. And I trust their Old Charlie – “good malt feel in the mouth; dry, tangy, bitter finish” – proves a less lively lad when he’s uncapped. Incidentally, when he’s not doing DIY or out hunting, my own likely lad, Fran, photographs my beer dishes. And eats them.Hunter’s chicken and chestnut pie (serves 4)Around 225g pack diced chicken or four skinned thighs cut into chunks; two pork chipolatas, sliced into rounds (that’s my nod to the brewer’s bangers ‘n’ mash!); oil/butter for frying; half a pint of Half Bore (or medium dark session bitter); sprig of tarragon if available (I picked mine wild the other day); two large potatoes, peeled and sliced (though not too thinly); two medium leeks, thickly sliced; 50g chestnut mushrooms, wiped and cut into chunks; 50g tinnedchestnuts, halved (also available in pouches); ready-made puff pastry (I lazily got mine ready-rolled, too); one beaten egg for glazing the pastry.Lightly sauté chicken and chipolatas in a little oil and butter to seal; add half a pint of malty bitter and around a quarter pint of water, then simmer for around 30 minutes; if used, add tarragon for final 2 minutes then remove it and discard. Meanwhile, boil spud slices until half cooked, then drain. Separately, boil leek chunks briefly – about 3 minutes – then drain. Drain chicken and chipolatas, reserving beer stock. Place sliced potatoes in bottom of pie dish, mix together chicken, chipolatas, mushrooms and leeks then spread over the potatoes; lastly, dot chestnuts on top of the mix then pour in enough beer stock to come about halfway up the pie dish. Allow to cool, then top with puff pastry and brush with egg wash. Bake just above the centre of a medium hot oven (200C, gas mark 5) for around 30 minutes, raising oven temperature to 210C, gas mark 6 for final 10 minutes until the pastry is risen and glazed golden brown – though check during cooking and if pastry starts to over-brown cover with a piece of foil. Thicken any remaining beer stock to make gravy, and serve with a green vegetable.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/pubspintspeople. Stan Hieronymus knows a thing or two about hops Stan Hieronymus has forgotten more about the beer industry than most of us will ever know.  He's typically leaned on for his knowledge of hops, but his expertise extends to many other areas in craft beer.  Hieronymus relocated to the Atlanta area about 1 1/2 years ago and we bend his ear every chance we get.  He joined us in early 2018 (BGR #120) and we thought it was about time to have him on again for an update. Naturally, we talk a lot about hops in this episode.  We get the update on the hop harvest across Europe and the Pacific NW and discuss hop terroir, a topic that hasn't been mentioned often but is generating more buzz after recent tests.  Some yeast talk happens as well, and we talk about our latest obsession - kveik.  We hear about the durability of true kveik strains and how real Norwegian farmhouse brewers make their beer, and it's likely nothing like what you've had at your local brewery.  With Hieronymus's recent trip to South America, we hear about the craft beer scene there and what styles are popular.  Spoiler... haze is an international craze. To get regular update from Stan you can subscribe to his newsletter via his website at appellationbeer.com. We are craft beer novices, as we've mentioned before when we talked craft beer with The Opportunistic Travelers on episode 09 of season 2. But, during our #USChowDown 6 week long US culinary road trip, we wanted to learn as much as possible about American craft beer. And, we were schooled in Louisiana, at Parish Brewing Company. On this week's episode of the food travel podcast, we sit down with Andrew to talk hop wizardry, how he ended up in the American craft beer industry, and why the food in Lafayette, Louisiana is so darned special. Although right now Parish Brewing Company only distributes their craft beer within Louisiana, it is easy to find all over the state. In particular, search for my favorite, the Parish Brewing Company Canebrake, and Eric's favorite, the Everie IPA. On today's THE FOOD SEEN, Adam Dulye is the chef behind San Francisco bars Monk's Kettle and The Abbot's Cellar. There he serves menus of food & beverage pairings, exalting beer as the drink of choice. Growing up in Kansas City, a place that celebrates burnt ends, Adam's first beer was not a Budweiser, but instead a local Boulevard Wheat. From party balls in culinary school, Guinness for après-ski on the slopes of Aspen, to his hop exposure in Portland OR, beer had yet to have a place at the table. Large mass production of “big beer” watered down the market for craft brews, but it was on top of a mountain in Vale in the middle of winter, while serving a venison dish, and opportunely sipping a Steamworks Brewing Steam Engine Lager, that snowballed everything. This started a series of beer dinners, which lead Adam working with The Great American Beer Festival, the single largest beer event in the country, helping them put together a tasting event at the Farm to Table Pavilion which pairs a chef with a brewery, Logsdon Farmhouse Ales Seizoen Bretta with duck confit cherry macaroons, Three Floyds hoppy beers with cuttlefish pasta. He also coordinates SAVOR an American Craft Beer and Food Experience, an upcoming festival to be held in Washington DC, which highlights beer and food pairings past chocolate with stout and mussels with Belgian wit. Plus, who doesn't need a drink on TAX DAY? This program was sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “I can't remember a winemaker ever telling me how they make a wine – but I remember every brewer explaining how they make their beer.” [33:00] –Adam Dulye on The Food Seen
