Q: Why shouldn't you tell secrets in a cornfield? A: Because the corn has ears! It's a “cornival” of craziness as Erin leads Sarah and Rachel in an all-new Iron Ladle Challenge celebrating the joys of "corn culture" (or “corny culture”) in midsummer. After discussing results from a pair of lively listener polls on how to cook and butter corn-on-the-cob (Facebook group members can find those here), the Ladies share their own favorite sweet corn recipes. Which will you try? Rachel's creamy corn chowder? Sarah's cowboy caviar? Erin's colorful confetti corn salad? Or all of the above??? Still can't get enough corny goodness? Check out this adorable music video on YouTube. Erin's Confetti Corn Salad Vegetables: 2 cans corn, drained 1 small green pepper, chopped 2 green onions, sliced 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 large tomato, chopped Dressing 1 Tablespoon lemon juice 3 Tablespoons mayo Directions mix dressing toss with salad add pepper to taste Rachel's Corn Chowder (Measurements are all approximate.) Dice ½ yellow onion and ¼ green pepper. Sautee in 2 T butter in a heavy pot over medium heat until soft. Peel, wash, and dice 3 or 4 medium potatoes. Add to pot with water or chicken broth to barely cover. Add *either* 2 cans creamed sweet corn or 1 quart garden corn from the freezer. Add salt and pepper (and chicken bullion in place of broth) to taste. Simmer until potatoes are soft. Add 2-4 cups whole milk and return to low simmer. (Be careful not to boil after this point.) Thicken in one of two ways (or both together): Melt ¼ cup butter and 2 T all-purpose flour in a small skillet and stir slowly into chowder. Use potato masher to mash some of the potatoes to release the starch. Serve with crusty buttered bread. Sarah's Cowboy Salad Mix together: Cowboy Caviar Salsa (Trader Joe's) Lettuce Shredded cheese Taco-spiced beef Any other fun salad ingredients because there are no rules. Visit Harvest Eating RIGHT NOW! Often times while cooking we run into consistency issues with regard to sauces, soups, and other items. The texture is such a key factor in the enjoyment of food so learning some methods to address consistency is a great skill to have. Whether we use a roux, an egg yolk, butter, a slurry of arrowroot, potato starch, or more “sciencey” items like xanthan gum, affecting texture is the key to better cooking. Here are a few items commonly used to thicken our foods: slurries-cornstarch, arrowroot, potato starch, roux-flour and fat like butter, oil or lard burre manie-a dough of butter and flour egg yolks cooked and pureed potatoes butter Other methods that are common are reducing the liquid volume by simmering uncovered to rid the excess moisture fr oma food. Historical Events 1880 Birth of Reginald Farrer ("Fair-rur")(books by this author), the legendary English rock and alpine gardener, plant explorer, nurseryman, writer, and painter. A son of a wealthy family in the Yorkshire Dales, Reginald repeatedly referenced Yorkshire in his writing. Reginald was born with many physical challenges. He had a cleft palate, speech difficulties, and what Reg himself called a "pygmy body." He had many surgeries to correct his mouth, which meant he was homeschooled. But the silver lining of his solitary childhood was his connection to nature. Reginald found happiness among flora and fauna, and he particularly loved the rocks, ravines, and hills around his home. At 14, he created his first rock garden, which eventually became a Craven nursery specializing in Asian mountain plants. Every time Reginald went on expeditions, he sent new alpine plants and seeds to Craven. After college, Reginald became a devout Buddhist, and he liked to say that he found "joy in high places." The European Alps became a yearly touchstone. And although he saw some of the most incredible mountains vistas in the world - they held no sway with Reginald. For Reginald - it was always about the plants. Reginald wrote, It may come as a shock and a heresy to my fellow Ramblers when I make the confession that, to me, the mountains… exist simply as homes and backgrounds to their population of infinitesimal plants. Reginald's book, The Garden of Asia, launched his writing career and showed garden writers a new way to write about plants. The botanist Clarence Elliot observed, As a writer of garden books [Reginald] stood alone. He wrote… from a peculiar angle... giving queer human attributes to his plants, which somehow exactly described them. His passion for rock gardens was perfectly timed. The British gardening public latched on to rock gardening with a frenzy. Rockeries were in every backyard. Reginald's book My Rock Garden (1907)was an instant success and earned him the moniker Prince of Alpine Gardeners. In 1919, at the age of 40, Reginald took a trip to Myanmar. He would never see his beloved Yorkshire again. He met his end alone on a remote Burmese mountain. Most reports say he died of Diptheria, but the explorer and botanist Joseph Rock said he heard Reginald drank himself to death on the night of October 17th, 1920. And I thought of Reginald up on that mountain alone when I researched the etymology of the name of his nursery, Craven, which means defeated, crushed, or overwhelmed. Today Reginald is remembered in the names of many plants like the beautiful blue Gentiana farreri ("jen-tee-AYE-na FAIR-ur-eye"). And the Alpine Garden Society's most highly-prized show medal is the Farrer Medal, which honors the best plant in the show. It was Reginald Farrer who said, I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. I think the true gardener, the older he grows, should more and more develop a humble, grateful and uncertain spirit. He also said, All the wars of the world, all the Caesars, have not the staying power of a lily in a cottage garden. 1918 On this day, Dora Hughes wrote an article for the New-York Tribune called, The Carrot Comes into its Own, (carrot cookbooks). She wrote, Time was when the carrot held high estate, for in the days of King Charles I, the ladies of the royal court used its feathery plumes in place of feathers for their adornment. Physicians prized the roots for their diuretic properties, from which came the general impression that eating carrots beautified the complexion and hair. Possibly the reason why carrots are not more often served is that, as a rule, they are prepared always in the same way. But one may serve carrots each day for a week and never have them twice in the same form. It is a pity that so few housekeepers seem to realize this. Then Dora offers up a diverse list of options for serving carrots: CRECY SOUP ("Chrissy") Crecy soup takes its name from the town in France where it was first made. MASHED CARROTS AND CARROT CAKES Carrots are excellent simply mashed and dressed with butter. CARROT CROQUETTES ("krow-kets") Carrot croquettes are made of mashed carrot and cracker crumbs, seasoned and mixed with egg. FRIED AND CANDIED CARROTS Fried carrots are prepared by cutting cooked carrots in long slices, dipping in egg and bread crumbs, and then brown in hot fat. Candied carrots: Butter a baking dish, lay in it slices of cold carrot.. sprinkle sugar ...and cinnamon or mace, add water or milk. FRENCH CARROTS AND PEAS Carrots and peas are a favorite French dish and their method is to cut the carrot in dice not much larger than the peas... heated together in a saucepan with oil for the dressing. SALAD OF CARROTS AND PEAS CARROT AND CELERY ON TOAST Carrot and celery make another good combination. Have an equal amount of each, the celery in thin slices and the carrot in small pieces. Boil the carrots till tender and drain. Scald the celery; mix the two and put to cook in a pint of milk. Thicken with a teaspoonful of cornstarch dissolved in a little cold milk, season with salt, pepper and butter and serve as soon as boiled. For a supper dish serve on toast. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Small Garden Style by Isa Hendry Eaton This book came in 2020, and the subtitle is A Design Guide for Outdoor Rooms and Containers. Little gardens, petite gardens, mini-gardens - whatever you call them, they are manageable, doable, and fun. Now Isa's approach is to layer in big style to these little marvels so that you end up with a garden that is lush and lovely. Her designs have a dramatic flare - no doubt thanks to her background in graphic design. There's a time in all our lives for small gardens. When I first lived at the cabin during the pandemic, I was quite content with a small kitchen garden on the deck compared to my wrap-around full-scale garden set up in the suburbs. What Isa shows us how to do is to embrace the smaller size but not sacrifice style. Isa's gardens are joyful, elegant, inviting, and exciting - and she has mastered creating outdoor living in small spaces for entertaining or relaxing. Now, if you don't even know where to start, never fear. Isa has a style quiz to help you pinpoint your own personal garden style. She also gets you thinking about your small space in new ways so that you can utilize all of the space - factoring in horizontal, vertical, and overhead spaces. Isa shows you some design tricks with pots and containers to create stunning planters, and she loves to tuck in succulents and grasses and all kinds of textures to add that drama - that graphic design approach - that Isa is known for. Isa also shares what she's learned from garden pros and reveals her favorite plants and decor for small spaces. She offers ideas for lawn alternatives and guides you through how to add in all kinds of elements like a fire pit, an instant mini orchard (my favorite!), a boulder birdbath, a perfumed wall, and a faux fountain with cascading plants - just to name a few. You'll learn from Isa that Small Gardens do not have to be dull or unimaginative. Isa is all about helping you transform your space into a jewel of Pinterest-worthy garden style - a modern garden oasis. You can get a copy of Small Garden Style by Isa Hendry Eaton and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $4. Botanic Spark 1864 Birth of Elizabeth Roberts MacDonald, Canadian poet, and short-story writer. She was a teacher at the School for Blind in Halifax. She's remembered for her 1906 collection of poems called Dream Verses and Others. Here's the last stanza from her poem A Song of Seasons, in which she praises the virtues of every season and then ends with these words: Sing a song of loving! Let the seasons go; Hearts can make their gardens Under sun or snow; Fear no fading blossom, Nor the dying day; Sing a song of loving, That will last for aye! (forever) Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.
Emily submitted a great question to AskTheEggWhisperer.com: “What can I do to thicken my uterine lining? (I'm 37 and we've been TTC for over 6 months. Obgyn wanted me to try progesterone before going to specialist. My issue is a thin lining of 5mm. Episode Summary:A thin uterine lining is a common obstacle many face in the realm of implantation challenges. And while conventional medical options are limited, natural medicine has a lot to offer. “But why isn't my lining cooperating?!” Often it is due to low levels of certain reproductive hormones, such as estrogen. This is common in women with PCOS or hypothalamic amenorrhea due to the underproduction of hormones. Other potential culprits are medications such as Clomid, insulin resistance, high androgens, scarring, infections, high stress, and growths like adenomyosis or fibroids.Conventional treatments often involve supplementing estrogen in the form of patches and pills. Sadly, this isn't effective in many cases because some women's bodies can't absorb it. In addition, blasting estrogen can actually worsen the situation for many women—especially those with estrogen-sensitive growths like fibroids, endometriosis, and adenomyosis. So what's a girl to do? Tune in to this week's episode to hear about the uterine plumping magic that natural methods offer. Thanks for Listening:Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Have you ever seen Will Smith’s movie Hitch? In the movie, Will plays the character of a dating coach where he helps men woo the women of their dreams. Haven't you noticed how going on a great date with a hot woman can affect your psyche the very next day at work? If you're someone who hasn't been on a date in a while and would love to be on a date or you continuously bug people around you about why they haven't been on a date, then this episode is just for you. Today’s guest is the real-life Hitch, Connell Barret, and author of “Dating Sucks, But You Don't: The Modern Guy's Guide to Total Confidence, Romantic Connection, and Finding the Perfect Partner.” Connell is a dating coach and the founder of Dating Transformation who helps men connect with women by unlocking their best most authentic selves. He takes men who lack confidence and who don't know how to flirt, and he helps them find out who they are in the process of getting great relationships. About 15 years ago, Connell found himself in a pattern of girls dumping him, which sent him on this downward spiral of realizing he needed to figure out this whole dating and relationship thing. He felt he wasn't good enough to be loved and it was a painful way to go through life. He didn't realize it wasn't the way it should be back then – he just thought that was the way it was. Ultimately, he decided to take massive action, try to fix the way he felt about himself, and get good at the art of dating. Fast-forward to today, Connell has appeared on some shows across the country, including Access Hollywood and The Today Show as well as in magazines including Best Life, Cosmo, Oprah Magazine, and Playboy. He's also an advisor for AskMen. Connor lives and works in New York City. Share this episode with three men who are really nice guys who just haven't figured it out yet for themselves and you think could really use some of Connell's advice to help them figure out how to live radically and in the most authentic way. Highlights Radical authenticity: Take authentic action even when it is scary because courage is part of this whole game. Lean into who you truly are. Masks: We all wear all these different masks and these masks never felt good. A mask eats away the face. Trying to be somebody you're not just to impress a woman will only hurt you. Vulnerability: Showing women your real side gives you the best chance to make a real connection with the kind of woman who likes that real, authentic you. That’s organic! Experience: How can you make her smile while being the real true you? How can you give her a great experience and show her the true you? Dating profile: Find out what kind of guy a woman likes by looking at your dating profile, which screens for the kind of woman who likes your type. Online dating: It feels a lot less risky and scary to grab your phone and swipe one way or another. And it has made it harder for men to do the bold, brave, scary thing. Risk: Because dating apps have reduced a lot of the anxiety and the feeling of romantic risk, a man's ability to take a real-life chance has gone down. Fantasy: If you're a single man and you see an attractive woman, it's an opportunity to make her romantic comedy movie fantasy come true. Strength: The man's job to lead within reason, at least in the courtship process. And then it's a woman's job to either follow you or not. It's like a dance. Take responsibility as a man in the courtship process. Transparency: "What I'm thinking and feeling is what I'm saying and doing." Don't filter everything through the prism of what you think a woman wants. Inner work: Dating success is 80% mindset and only 20% of it is technique – what you say, how you say it, your vocal tonality, etc. It first has to come from inside. Self-worth: Write out a list of 25 reasons why you're a really good choice for any given woman. Read it out loud and it helps embed it more deeply in your psychology and you'll notice you're standing taller. Reference experiences: Our brains need proof, not promises. We need to experience some result or success in life to know that we're good at it. New actions: Confidence, kindness, warmth, and giving – we can't manufacture these emotions. We have to earn them. You need to understand and take new actions. Rejection: Rejection is part of this whole process of dating. But when a woman turns you down, that’s not rejection. That's just information. Thicken the skin: You must get rejected five straight times to thicken your skin to let go of that potential pain. And if any of the women likes you, go back to zero and start again. True happiness: Romantic companionship and connection is essential for fulfillment for true happiness. It's a basic core human need to be touched, to be loved, to give love, to feel romantic connection, to have sex, to have friendship with our romantic partner. Value: Feel your value that you are enough for anyone and once you get to that point, you can focus more on enjoying the process. Valeo Pharma is already a successful, revenue generating, small cap Canadian pharmaceutical company that acquires the Canadian rights to commercialized drugs in other parts of the world that don’t have Canada on their radar as a target market. This “in-license” business model is ingenious because it means ZERO developmental or clinical risk, which is the downfall of most small cap pharma companies. This model has resulted in the following success: $5.3M in revenues in the first 9 months of 2020 (ending July 31, 2020) 9 products currently in the market with an annual estimated peak sales of $40M/year 7 products in the pipeline with an annual estimated peak sales of $45M/year In fact, capital markets confidence is so high that Valeo secured $8.6M in financing in the last half of the year with: $6.9M Bought Deal financing at $1.20/shares A $1.7M Oversubscribed debenture (non-convertible) If that was all Valeo had, most investors would be happy to sit back and watch the Company grow. But then came Redesca. We are going to save you the science and tell you that Redesca belongs to a class of anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) called LMWH. The size of the Canadian LMWH market is over $200M per year and Valeo believes they can capture 15-30% of this market. If you’re doing back of napkin math, that equates to $30,000,000 – $60,000,000 per year in revenues. But how does a new product capture that much market share? Glad you asked because we asked CEO Steve Saviuk the same question. Competition is tough in all markets and they don’t let someone take 15-30% market share without one hell of a fight. Saviuk agreed and gave the following 3 reasons: 1. Redesca has an 8-year international track record of safety and efficacy. It is already well known 2. Redesca is flat out cheaper, which is music to the ears of Provincial Health Ministries whose budgets have been stretched to the max this year no thanks to COVID-19. Vaelo is so confident that it stated “This is great news for the Canadian healthcare system …. and is expected to help provide significant savings to provincial healthcare systems.” Well there you have it. Valeo is a great story. Watch the video. HOLD ON. THERE’S MORE … A LOT MORE In addition to being used primarily for treating and preventing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, LMWH are also now increasingly used as a first line of defense tool in the fight against Covid-19. The World Health Organization’s (“WHO”) issued guidance regarding the prophylaxis use of LMWH to help prevent complications in the clinical management of severe acute respiratory infections when COVID-19 infection is suspected. The Canadian market for LMWH was already at a healthy $200M + per year when Valeo started down the Redesca path 4 years ago. Now it gets the added kicker of Redesca being a first line of defense to fight COVID-19. Now you have it. That’s the Valeo story as it applies to Redesca. There is a whole lot more to the story given their pipeline of products but we couldn’t cover it all in this great interview with CEO Steve Saviuk. If you love revenue generating, growing and blue sky potential small cap companies, then this Valeo interview is a must watch.

However, I do boast a very fine cellar; not so much the contents (though I have a few Trappists I wouldn’t kick out of bed) but the structure itself, built by my husband Fran with his own fair hands. It was no small endeavour; he excavated it out of the raised ground at the back of our house creating a cavern that stays blessedly cool even in the hottest summer. The back wall forms a wine rack, while three massive stone slab shelves provide the ideal place for storing beer; I can keep fruit, veg and cheese out there, too. It even has a few obligatory spiders’ webs.Anyway, due to Lockdown our beer cellar was running low so my brave hunter/gatherer took his own fair hands on a beer hunt; naturally, I put a St Christopher round his neck, my lucky pebble in his pocket and made him chew a couple of raw garlic cloves before he left. Hunter/gatherer turned out to be the mot juste because he came back with several different ales, including two I’d not tried before, from award-winning Hunter’s Brewery at Bulleigh Barton Farm, Ipplepen, Devon – not a million miles from us. Apart from being a normal brewery, 60-barrel brew length with 4,000 gallon fermenting capacity, they have a dedicated conditioning room and can turn out 3,000 bottle-conditioned beers an hour. And, listen up, they bottle-condition all their beers – yes, all nine of them. I am seriously impressed, and place them carefully in my cellar to carry on conditioning. One of them is Half Bore, which the brewer describes as an amber coloured session ale (4.2 per cent ABV); rather intriguingly, the ingredients include both honey and golden syrup along with malted barley and wheat, suggested pairing bangers ‘n’ mash. But I thought that hint of sweetness might be just what I needed for a chicken and chestnut pie and so it proved though, sadly, when I carefully opened the (unshaken) bottle it spurted over my kitchen floor, so the glass I poured was less like amber nectar and more the colour of our famous Devon mud from the brewery farmyard… However, the flavour was there, rounded and nuanced, hops coming through on a lingering aftertaste. And I trust their Old Charlie – “good malt feel in the mouth; dry, tangy, bitter finish” – proves a less lively lad when he’s uncapped. Incidentally, when he’s not doing DIY or out hunting, my own likely lad, Fran, photographs my beer dishes. And eats them.Hunter’s chicken and chestnut pie (serves 4)Around 225g pack diced chicken or four skinned thighs cut into chunks; two pork chipolatas, sliced into rounds (that’s my nod to the brewer’s bangers ‘n’ mash!); oil/butter for frying; half a pint of Half Bore (or medium dark session bitter); sprig of tarragon if available (I picked mine wild the other day); two large potatoes, peeled and sliced (though not too thinly); two medium leeks, thickly sliced; 50g chestnut mushrooms, wiped and cut into chunks; 50g tinnedchestnuts, halved (also available in pouches); ready-made puff pastry (I lazily got mine ready-rolled, too); one beaten egg for glazing the pastry.Lightly sauté chicken and chipolatas in a little oil and butter to seal; add half a pint of malty bitter and around a quarter pint of water, then simmer for around 30 minutes; if used, add tarragon for final 2 minutes then remove it and discard. Meanwhile, boil spud slices until half cooked, then drain. Separately, boil leek chunks briefly – about 3 minutes – then drain. Drain chicken and chipolatas, reserving beer stock. Place sliced potatoes in bottom of pie dish, mix together chicken, chipolatas, mushrooms and leeks then spread over the potatoes; lastly, dot chestnuts on top of the mix then pour in enough beer stock to come about halfway up the pie dish. Allow to cool, then top with puff pastry and brush with egg wash. Bake just above the centre of a medium hot oven (200C, gas mark 5) for around 30 minutes, raising oven temperature to 210C, gas mark 6 for final 10 minutes until the pastry is risen and glazed golden brown – though check during cooking and if pastry starts to over-brown cover with a piece of foil. Thicken any remaining beer stock to make gravy, and serve with a green vegetable.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/pubspintspeople. Tory Burch is the founder, chairman, and CEO of … Tory Burch. You know her as the woman (and the name) behind so many of your favorite clothes. But way before she created those iconic Reva flats, she built a career in fashion PR, working for designers like Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. Tory eventually made the switch from PR… to designing her own clothes, and running her own business. That was 2004. These days, her clothes are sold in more than 250 Tory Burch stores and over 3,000 department and specialty stores around the world. In 2009, she launched the Tory Burch Foundation to help empower female entrepreneurs. And now, she’s got a brand new initiative to help get out the vote. On the couch, she talks to us about how to negotiate, her Oprah moment, and taking negative feedback when your brand is your name.

Lara Foldvari joined the Plant-Based TourGuide podcast today and brought a great perspective of being a "newbie" vegan, since she has been following a plant based lifestyle for less than a year. Listen as she gives her tale of being "tricked" into going to a Plant Based Vegan Diet (funny story) and even her ideas for "sneaky vegan meals" to serve to people. You can find Lara at: Www.Yolarates.com. She recommends the book: WHOLE: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition by T. Colin Campbell She recommends this website for info on Vegan Cheese's: Www.Miyokoskitchen.com She even provided us with the "word of the day" REJUVELAC which she describes how she uses this process. Here is her recipe for Vegan Mozarella she was kind enough to share: 1/3 Cup Raw Cashews (Soaked for about 4 hours in water) 1 Cup Water (filtered suggested) 3 heaping teaspoons potato starch (can use tapioca starch also) 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon salt Blend all ingredients together in a blender. Pour into a saucepan and stir, stir, stir over a medium heat. It will start THICKEN and STRETCH -much like mozzarella does. You're done! Store leftover in a container in the fridge. She uses this on her vegan pizza's and vegan poutine (a french fries/gravy/cheese dish from Canada).
