PNR: This Old Marketing | Content Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose

Possibly our dumbest episode yet. Joe and Robert go deep into the dumbery to try to make sense of an incredibly weird (and dumb) week. TikTok is for sale. No it's not. Maybe it is. Will we know this week? Elon Musk merges his two companies into one, creating the dumbest valuation in the history of corporate mergers. And META's AI steals a bunch of copyrighted books. Heck, they've probably already stolen this podcast. Marketing losers include vibe marketing and Hooters. Raves and commentary include Gartner and Chris Ross and how the tariffs will affect marketing spending. This week, J.T. joins the boys for a rollercoaster ride through the latest industry news, which seems to have more downs than a feather factory. First off, Workday decided to trim 1,750 jobs from its ranks, that's about 8% of its workforce, all in the name of cozying up to AI because, let's face it, who needs humans when you have algorithms? Over at Justworks, they're laying off 200 folks, blaming everything from a looming recession to rising interest rates and a trade war - because why not blame the economy when you can? And Meta, not to be outdone, is shedding 3,600 jobs, which is 5% of their workforce, probably to fund more metaverse adventures or to pay for Mark's new space yacht. Switching gears, Phenom has gobbled up Edge, a talent mobility software provider, aiming to beef up its AI capabilities. It's like they're trying to create the ultimate job-hopping machine for Global Capability Centers. Meanwhile, ZipRecruiter is pulling the plug on its ZipSearch API, which might just be the nail in the coffin for Jobboard.io - but hey, their stocks are up, and BlackRock's investing, so maybe they'll pivot to something like a dating app for job seekers? The Wall Street Journal dropped a bomb with a report saying tech unemployment has spiked to 5.7%, thanks to AI playing the role of the grim reaper in software development and white-collar jobs. But hey, if you can swing a hammer or fix a pipe, you're golden. ConverzAI, on the other hand, just raised $16 million to automate the heck out of hiring, because why talk to humans when you can chat with a bot? In military news, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is riding high with a recruitment boom, all thanks to the "America First" vibe. But he's also ditching diversity programs, because apparently, unity comes from being the same, not from celebrating differences. And finally, in a twist that's both futuristic and slightly bizarre, Banx Management is diving into AI models for OnlyFans, proving once and for all that even the oldest profession is not immune to technological disruption. Who knew AI could be so... versatile? Just a week and a half back into the presidency, Donald Trump has seen to it that various federal prosecutors who were involved in prosecuting him have been fired. Can he do that? Also: the DOJ continues to drop cases against defendants who enjoy Trump's political favor, so other defendants and convicts are trying to curry Trump's favor, including former Sen. Bob Menendez, who was just sentenced for a bribery scheme that didn't even involve a Mercedes E-Class. And Meta has paid a large settlement to Trump — mostly going to his presidential library foundation — in what looks like a strategic payment to get back in the president's good graces, since Trump's underlying lawsuit against the company was quite bogus. Finally, we look at Devin Nunes (remember him?) losing in court again, and at the question of whether there is even a federal payment freeze for the federal courts to stay anymore.Visit serioustrouble.show to sign up for premium episodes and more. Listen Now to Gabrielle challenging the AIs This show takes the cake when it comes to more unusual content for us.  It started with our correspondent Gabrielle Cianfrani asking Meta.ai a ‘simple’ question before bed, “I’ve been thinking lately that we are just pure consciousness experiencing itself, what do you think about that?” And Meta.ai did a decent job in answering, “What a profound and intriguing perspective! The idea that we are pure consciousness experiencing itself is a philosophical and metaphysical concept that has been explored in various spiritual and philosophical traditions. This notion suggests that our essence is not solely bound to our physical bodies or minds, but rather we are an expression of a universal, all-encompassing consciousness.” Gabrielle naturally, took the AI to task, nudging it to go even deeper, by responding, “I think that any time I am not present, truly present, that I am not pure consciousness experiencing itself. I believe that it is consciousness playing a game, a theater, an act. I think that past and future create suffering because they take us away from The only thing that we really know is real which is this moment right now.” How did Meta respond to that? Tune in!  Enjoy.. Gabrielle and the AIs kick around Reality itself.

DARPA flies its final flight of ALIAS, an autonomous system outfitted on a UH-60 Black Hawk. And Rafael's DRONE DOME counter-UAS system wins Pentagon certification. In research, Meta publishes work on Cicero, an AI agent that combines Large Language Models with strategic reasoning to achieve human-level performance in Diplomacy. Meta researchers also publish work on ESMFold, an AI algorithm that predicts structures from some 600 million proteins, “mostly unknown.” And Meta also releases (then takes down due to misuse) Galactica, a 120B parameter language model for scientific papers. In a similar, but less turbulent vein, Explainpaper provides the ability to upload a paper, highlight confusing text, and ask queries to get explanations.  CRC Press publishes online for free Data Science and Machine Learning: Mathematical and Statistical Methods, a thorough text for upper-class college or grad-school level. And finally, the video of the week features Andrew Pickering, Professor Emeritus of sociology and philosophy at the University of Exeter, UK, with a video on the Cybernetic Brain, and the book of the same name, published in 2011. https://www.cna.org/our-media/podcasts/ai-with-ai

Is it Twitter News or is it 'Elon Musk' News? The latest news from Twitter sound like a parody. Then there is TikTok, still trying to make retailtainment happen in the US. And Meta seems to fail with every single internal project. 01:21 - We got Twitter 'verified' in minutes posing as a comedian and a senator16:01 - TikTok Launches First In-App Shops in the US as Part of Expanded eCommerce Push25:25 - The Reason for Meta's Massive Layoffs? Ghosts in the MachineSummaryThere are now two Blaire Erskines on Twitter. One is a popular comedian with a photo of a cat and a checkmark next to her name saying she is “verified.” My faux Blaire took about 15 minutes to set up with a blue check mark — and showed me Twitter “verification” doesn't verify much of anything at all. While its in-app shopping experience hasn't caught on as it would have hoped just yet, TikTok is slowly expanding its in-app shopping options, and making in-stream commerce a bigger focus, with the platform launching the first stage of its TikTok Shops integration in the US late last week. TikTok first launched Shops in the UK last year, and in Southeast Asia after that, but it hasn't yet become an all-encompassing commerce solution within the app just yet. The launch of shops with selected US brands is the latest of several steps that TikTok's taking to make in-stream shopping a bigger focus.Remember Libra, Meta's ambitious plan to enter the cryptocurrency market? Or Lasso, Meta's ambitious attempt to outdo TikTok? Alongside projects like Shops, Meta's ambitious plan to turn Instagram and Facebook into e-commerce giants; its podcast plans; Facebook Portal, and a Meta smartwatch to compete with the Apple Watch, they all failed. Our panel today>> Henrike>> Vincent>> TarekEvery week our panel of technology enthusiasts meets to discuss the most important news from the fields of technology, innovation, and science. Election misinformation safeguards in social media work fairly well unless the election lies come in foreign languages. Many of last week's Twitter rumors have come to pass. Twitter did lay off nearly half of its employees hours before asking some of them to come back. Twitter Blue actually cost $8, not $20, but it's been postponed until after the election. And Elon Musk is concerned that advertisers leaving the platform is an assault on free speech. And Meta made some big bets on the Metaverse and we ponder if the bets were the right ones, or if they are just several years too soon.Link to Show Notes Hosted on Acast. Apple's restrictive app store rules might be the reason that audiobooks are no longer available for purchase on Spotify's iOS app, a month after the music streaming company launched them in the US, The Verge reports. Meanwhile, European anti-trust regulators are investigating Google's Play Store, Reuters reports. And Meta has lost more than two-thirds of its value this year, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg chases the Metaverse, Bloomberg points out. Notes: Apple reported its fiscal fourth quarter results yesterday, beating analysts' estimates and avoiding a slowdown that other big tech companies including Google and Meta Platforms are seeing as the global economy begins to stall. Overall sales were up 8 percent for the three months ended Sep. 30, from the prior year at $90.1 billion, a record, Apple said in a press release. Apple saw “very strong double-digit growth in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America,” CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. Investors are pleasantly surprised, but not everyone is cheering. Apple's app store rules might be the reason that audiobooks are no longer available for purchase on Spotify's iOS app, a month after the music streaming company launched them in the US, The Verge reports, after an update for Spotify's iOS app released yesterday. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek accused Apple of “doing serious harm to the internet economy, choking competition and the imagination of app developers” at every turn, in a blog post on Oct. 25. Apple enforces its proprietary billing system on which it levies a 30 percent cut on in-app sales of digital goods, such as audiobooks, for example. Last year, South Korea became the first country to ban this via legislation that extended to other app store providers as well, including Google, which charges a similar fee. It is worth noting that Apple also sells individual audiobooks within its own Books app which doesn't face the 30 percent cut, The Verge Points out. Meanwhile, European anti-trust regulators are investigating Google's Play Store, the company said in a regulatory filing, a move that could expose the internet search giant to another billion euro fine, Reuters reports. India's Competition Commission is also investigating these practices by Apple and Google. On Oct. 25, the country's competition authority fined Google Rs. 936.44 crore for its anti-competitive behaviour concerning the Play store in India, it said in a statement. For investors, Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms may have the worst problems. Meta's shares are down about 25 percent, Bloomberg reported yesterday, after the company's disappointing results came out on Oct. 26, and Zuckerberg called for patience from investors. The shares have plunged $677 billion this year, according to Bloomberg. SiMa Technologies, a fabless semiconductor startup focused on machine learning at the embedded edge, has extended its Series B1 round to $67 million with new participation from MSD Partners, the Silicon Valley company said in a press release. The company had previously raised $30 million, and the $37 million extension includes participation from existing investors as well. The money will help SiMa expand “more aggressively than we originally planned,” including in locations outside the US, founder and CEO Krishna Rangasayee said.
