Rerun: When Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross failed to reach their celebrity guest, 78 year-old ‘Fawlty Towers' star Andrew Sachs, they instead left him a series of answerphone messages, joking about sexual encounters with Sachs's granddaughter, Georgina Baillie. The segment aired on Brand's Radio 2 show on 18th October, 2008, and became the third most-complained about programme in recent BBC history. The presenters were suspended, the station controller resigned, and the BBC was fined £150,000. The event, which became known as ‘Sachsgate', kick-started an era of ‘compliance' at Britain's national broadcaster, and was an early example of tabloid-generated ‘cancel culture'. In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca ask whether the presenters would still be in their old jobs, were it not for the Mail On Sunday; discover a parallel between one of Sachs' greatest comic moments and the voicemails that brought him back to national attention; and speculate whether ‘Sachsgate' lead to the boom in comedy podcasts… Further Reading: • ‘Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross Abuse Andrew Sachs via Phone' (BBC, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7IHJ66wj9g&t=476s • ‘Sachsgate: The obscene prank calls from Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross that 'haunted' Andrew Sachs before his death' (Daily Mirror, 2016): https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/sachsgate-obscene-prank-calls-russell-9376380 • ‘BBC apologises over Brand prank' (BBC, 2008): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7692911.stm ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Rough and tough Hard-boiled detectives grab a lot of attention, but who would have a better insight on the nature of human evil than “a man who does next to nothing but hear men's real sins”?Where could you find a more “soft-boiled” character than the parish priest. Mutual brought The Adventures of Father Brown to the air in 1945. Father Brown was the antithesis of the more celebrated soft-boiled detective, Sherlock Holmes. Where Holmes was a master of deduction, Father Brown relied on intuition based on his familiarity on men's souls. The Absence of Mr. Glass: The unusual behavior of a young man sparks concern in a seaside town. After almost two years, the Roald Dahl Retrospective is back! In honor of Matilda the Musical being in the theaters, Arun and Patricia catch up with the remaining Roald Dahl adaptations before jumping into this new film. In this episode, they cover the 1976 BBC special James and the Giant Peach based on the 1961 book of the same name starring Simon Bell, Anna Quayle, Ann Beach, Arthur Hewlett, Andrew Sachs, Thorley Walters, Pat Coombs, Kate Lock, and Bernard Cribbins. James Trotter lives with his mean aunts Spiker and Sponge after losing his parents from a rhino attack. An old man gifts James crocodile tongues to make his dreams come true, but drops them accidentally. It ends up growing a peach to a large size. James and a group of insects escape inside the peach and use it to venture off away from Aunts Spiker and Sponge. The 1976 version of James and the Giant Peach is one of the obscure Roald Dahl adaptions ever made and has since been overshadowed by the 1996 Disney adaptation. Is this version better or worse? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Rough and tough Hard-boiled detectives grab a lot of attention, but who would have a better insight on the nature of human evil than “a man who does next to nothing but hear men's real sins”?Where could you find a more “soft-boiled” character than the parish priest. When Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross failed to reach their celebrity guest, 78 year-old ‘Fawlty Towers' star Andrew Sachs, they instead left him a series of answerphone messages, joking about sexual encounters with Sachs's granddaughter, Georgina Baillie. The segment aired on Brand's Radio 2 show on 18th October, 2008, and became the third most-complained about programme in recent BBC history. The presenters were suspended, the station controller resigned, and the BBC was fined £150,000. The event, which became known as ‘Sachsgate', kick-started an era of ‘compliance' at Britain's national broadcaster, and was an early example of tabloid-generated ‘cancel culture'.In this episode, Arion, Olly and Rebecca ask whether the presenters would still be in their old jobs, were it not for the Mail On Sunday; discover a parallel between one of Sachs' greatest comic moments and the voicemails that brought him back to national attention; and speculate whether ‘Sachsgate' lead to the boom in comedy podcasts…Further Reading:• ‘Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross Abuse Andrew Sachs via Phone' (BBC, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7IHJ66wj9g&t=476s• ‘Sachsgate: The obscene prank calls from Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross that 'haunted' Andrew Sachs before his death' (Daily Mirror, 2016): https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/sachsgate-obscene-prank-calls-russell-9376380• ‘BBC apologises over Brand prank' (BBC, 2008): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7692911.stmFor bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back tomorrow! The plot is about a disgruntled hotel owner named Basil Fawlty, his wife Sybil, the waitress and assistant Polly Sherman, and the Spanish waiter and bellboy Manuel who work at a run down hotel named Faulty Towers and have to content with a lot of crazy situations from health inspectors to Germans to Americans.  Fawlty Towers has been considered to be one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made and the inspiration for many other sitcoms from Father Ted, Cheers, and Third Rock from the Sun. I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere

"an incomparable actor" [STUD]  Anyone who is interested in the intersection of Sherlock Holmes and audio (that's why you're here, isn't it?) is familiar with the name Clive Merrison. The definitive Sherlock Holmes of the audio realm, Clive Merrison holds the distinction of being the only actor to play Sherlock Holmes in dramatized form in every one of the 60 stories from the Canon, as well as in 15 additional pastiches. Together with Michael Williams (and later Andrew Sachs), Merrison brought Holmes to life and gave him real humanity—particularly in the sometimes prickly, sometimes tender friendship with his Watson. We talked with Clive Merrison about his real-life friendship with Michael Williams, his time on the stage, what his Uncle Norman did to influence him, his adventures with "Hobbo," the actor he would sneak into the sound booth to watch perform and the actor from whom he wished he could flee from the recording studio, what made Sir Laurence Olivier hug him, the Sherlock role he turned down, the next Sherlock Holmes story he'd like to perform in, and much more. Today the embarrassment of explaining Fawlty Towers to my Spanish friends, an internet outage, and the end of central Government control in Spain   Find out more: https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 87 Fake Spanish Waiters uncorrected transcript    Wednesday and the Spanish Parliament has approved the Royal Decree for “new normality”. It starts in a very good place with central control being released and the regional Governments can go back to being in charge.   Well I say Wednesday, it is actually Thursday we had an Internet moment last night, every couple of months the internet falls over, we have a peculiar Internet system here, it uses a line of sight dish that sends and receives the internet from a transmitter and receiver site, last night it decided to be naughty and not work.   We found out after returning from our Covid19 shopping experience, now that we can both travel in the car we split the shopping so I get to enjoy the rubber glove, mask, steamed up glasses experience too.   Our client Ryan emailed to say he had not received the audio I sent him at midday.  He was right it still had not synced into the cloud even after 5 hours.   Then we could not turn the lights on through Alexa, she did that red spinning thing saying she couldn’t connect to the internet.  This is our fault for bringing northern European technology down to southern Spain and expecting it to work as well as it did in the UK.   Spain, does have good high speed internet in many of the cities, but out here on the coast it is not particularly fast or reliable.  Why am I banging on about the internet?  Because right now as many people as possible who can work from home should, that is the Spanish Government advice.   But it is going to require massive infrastructure improvements, more fibre optic availability and a much quicker and better way of being connected.  I remember when we first used to come to Spain twenty or so years ago, the electric grid network was equally unreliable, now there seems to be fewer power outages even in the big storm we had 18 months ago, the electricity stayed on.  So, Spain has come a long way in 20 years with the quality of the power network, now I think they need to think about the internet network in the same way.   A phone call from the Opticians about my glasses, in Spanish I picked out most of the words, but there I was having trouble with a word that sounded like mountains, she kept saying the mountains are wrong, or at least that is what is sounded like.   For the last 12 weeks I have been wearing a pair of specs that are held together with insulation tape, it makes me look a bit special needs, if I dare say that in this Little Britain p.c. world.   It turns out that the mountains, is the word Monturas, - the frames, so the bloody frames of my new glasses are broken on arrival, so the new glasses have been sent back to the factory… sigh!   Back to Little Britain and whilst I am not going to comment on the ‘black face’ characters of that show and ‘Come Fly with Me’ – I leave that up to my black friends, it really is their call, though I find characters like Precious Little funny, but uncomfortable watching all at the same time. She is what comedy writers would call a grotesque, a bit like Judy in Punch and Judy.   A few years ago when we were learning Spanish and helping our friends with their English the subject of comedy came up and what our favourite comedies were about.  I spoke to Maria about “Fawlty Towers” “Tell me,” she said “What is funny about an hotel,”   I said, “Well there is this character called Manuel, he is from Barcelona and is portrayed as a stupid idiot because he never understands what anyone is saying.”   “So, who is the Spanish actor who plays this Manuel,” she asked.  “Well he isn’t Spanish he is English and he, er well puts make-up on and a silly Spanish moustache and walks around with a vacant expression on his face.”   Suddenly she recognised the show, “This is cannot be right, we had this show many years ago and the waiter was a stupid Italian from Naples, not Spanish, ha you know how stupid Italians are,” she laughed.   Turns out she was right, when Fawlty Towers was shown on La Una, they dubbed all the characters into Spanish and made Manuel a waiter from Naples in Italy.  He was still Andrew Sachs an English Caucasian actor playing a Latino with a false moustache and fake suntan skin.   Finally yesterday, Wednesday we are sorting out selling our car, in Britain you fill in the little slip at the bottom of the V5 and exchange some money and job done.   It would appear in Spain it is a long complicated process which involves a trip to the main Trafico DGT office in the city of Granada, a great deal of form filing and there is TAX to pay on the sale, based on how new the car is.  There is an official list of the tax payable.  The Administrator who will be receiving a large fee for doing all this work has already said “Your car does not exist.”   I do feel that a car selling drama might be on the horizon, keep listening and subscribe to the Spanish Practices Podcast, in a few days’ time I will tell you the story of an event that I shall always regret for the rest of my life.

Love books? Love movies? Hosts Marisa Serafini and Phil Svitek love them both too... equally. So they decided to marry their love of both into a monthly dedicated series where they discuss books that have been adapted into movies. This month they chose Roald Dahl's James And The Giant Peach which is about a young English orphan boy who enters a gigantic, magical peach, and has a wild and surreal cross-world adventure with seven magically-altered garden bugs he meets. They set off on a journey to escape from James' two mean and cruel aunts. Roald Dahl was originally going to write about a giant cherry, but changed it to James and the Giant Peach because a peach is "prettier, bigger and squishier than a cherry." Because of the story's occasional macabre and potentially frightening content, it has become a regular target of censors. The actors Jeremy Irons, Andrew Sachs, and Julian Rhind-Tutt provide the English language audiobook recordings.

House of Mortal Sin! Directed by legendary British filmmaker Pete Walker, 1976's House of Mortal Sin is Walker thumbing his nose at the Catholic church with a story that is equal parts horrifying, bleak, prescient and timely. The film stars Susan Penhaligon, Anthony Sharp, Norman Eshley, Stephanie Beacham, Sheila Keith and Andrew Sachs.  The synopsis is as follows:  Jenny visits the local Catholic church to have her confession is heard by the immoral Father Meldrum, who is perversely interested in her sex life. Rushing to escape his prying, she drops her apartment keys which Meldrum uses to invade her house and blackmail her by threatening to publish her recorded confession. Father Meldrum is looked after by his sinister housekeeper, Miss Brabazon and when Jenny's boyfriend Terry confronts Meldrum, he is attacked with incense and buried alive in the churchyard. Father Meldrum s standing in the community means that no one will suspect or accuse a man of the cloth; but in the meantime more people begin to die in mysterious ways through poisoned communion wafer and strangulation by rosary beads...  Please note that this podcast contains strong language and Scottish accents.  Remember, you can keep up to date with our news by following us via the usual social media outlets:  Facebook Twitter Instagram Plus you can drop us an email to stronglanguageviolentscenes@gmail.com.    In , we explored some of the early days of Sherlock Holmes on radio with Bert Coules. We're pleased to present the second part of that episode as we make a deeper dive into Sherlock Holmes as portrayed in radio productions.   The bulk of our conversation with Bert centers - appropriately so - around the BBC Radio 4 series starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams (). After selling a dramatized version of The Hound of the Baskervilles to the BBC (which starred Roger Rees), Bert was given the green light to dramatize all 60 Sherlock Holmes stories, serving as the head writer.   The striking resemblance between Sidney Paget's Sherlock Holmes (r) and Clive Merrison in the role (l).     Bert discusses the casting of the new series, including what was required in a Watson that was an equal partner - and a zinger aimed at Nigel Bruce - as well as the increased comfort felt by the characters and actors over the course of the series recording. You may be surprised to learn how the stories were assigned to the writing team (a scientific method from the BBC, no doubt) and how the writers were "imaginatively faithful" to the stories. Not to mention the backstory behind an alternative ending to "The Solitary Cyclist."       Of particular interest for us in this show is a multitude of sound clips from the BBC series - including the music that played such a prominent role in so1me episodes. We did a bit of our own sound design in this episode in keeping with the spirit of the theme.   We also discuss some of the more intriguing guest stars on the series, such as Peter Sallis, Desmond Llewelyn, Brian Blessed and Tom Baker, as well as the "new" Watson during The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Andrew Sachs. Bert has a great story about how he ended the series in a manner than ensured it will not be continued.       CONTEST ALERT: This episode contains a contest.  We mentioned Denis Quilley and Patrick Allen as two actors who have been in the BBC Sherlock Holmes radio shows (as Bob Carruthers [SOLI] and Leon Sterndale [DEVI], respectively) and who have also been guest stars in the Granada series (as Leon Sterndale [DEVI] and Col. Sebastian Moran [EMPT], respectively.   There are at least two other actors who have also had guest starring roles in each series. The first individual who  the names and their respective roles and stories in each series will win a copy of Bert Coules' book, .   The Baker Street Regulars - recurring members of the cast (L to R):  Clive Merrison (Holmes), Stephen Thorne (Inspector Lestrade),  Joan Matheson (Mrs. Hudson), Michael Williams (Watson),  John Hartley (Mycroft Holmes).       Our Gas-Lamp this episode, we return to The Baker Street Journal of January 1952 (Vol. 2 No. 1 (New Series)) for Edgar Rosenberger's poem "Four Ages," representing the evolution of Sherlock Holmes as portrayed by various actors.       Links: , maintained by Bert Coules.  - a new editions, revised and expanded - by Bert Coules       More links available on on ,  and of course, our .       Please  and be kind enough to leave a rating or review for the show. With John Wilson. Sergei Polunin is the youngest dancer ever to be made a principal with the Royal Ballet, a role he unexpectedly quit after two years aged 21. Earlier this year he suddenly left the cast of a new ballet version of Midnight Express, days before its UK premiere. As he takes the lead in a Moscow production of Coppélia in London, Polunin discusses this role and his career highs and lows. David Baddiel's first full stand-up show for over 15 years concentrates on the idea of celebrity. In Fame - Not The Musical, he argues that famous people don't talk about how the level of fame can fluctuate, and suggests that he is no longer as famous as he used to be. He discusses his return to the stage, and also reveals that he feels partly responsible for Sachsgate, the infamous prank calls made by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross to Andrew Sachs. In 1936 Dame Laura Knight became the first woman to be elected to the Royal Academy since 1769. As a new exhibition of her work opens at the National Portrait Gallery, Juliet Gardiner reassesses an artist who began painting circus scenes and went on to become an official war artist, creating a famous picture of the Nuremberg Trials. In tonight's Cultural Exchange, the British portrait and fashion photographer Rankin - full name John Rankin Waddell - selects a short poem by Thomas Hardy which had a big influence on his decision to become a photographer while studying at Brighton Polytechnic. This three-part composition is based on A Warning To The Curious, the second story on our unabridged audiobook of M.R. James - Casting the Runes and Other Uncanny Tales read by Andrew Sachs. The narrative concerns the existence of three holy Anglo-Saxon crowns, said to protect Britain from Vikings and other invaders. Each movement in Howard's suite deals with a different holy crown. Fawlty Towers Join Meds and Kell as they talk about this fabulous British Comedy Fawlty Towers. Written and performed by John Cleese and Connie Booth, Fawlty Towers is now over 34 years old and still going strong. Only two series were made and its a formula that comedians such as Ricky Gervais have taken upon themselves to keep their own comedy fresh. Also starring Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales the team created a wonderful programme that has never been beaten. The premise of the show is centred around Basil Fawlty played by Cleese a hotel owner who is dominated by his wife Sybil and has an amazing disregard for anyone who is below what he classes as 'the best class'. A fantastic comedy that is worth not only hearing about here but must be viewed to get the ultimate pleasure of Cleese and Booths writing.
